At the Pathways to Independence program in Kearny, N.J., disabled workers sort clothing hangers and unload boxes through work contracted with outside companies. One of those workers is 33-year-old Jaime Muniz, who has been there for 11 years and whose paycheck recently averaged about $1.28 per hour. “My payment is not going well,” Muniz told The Post's disabilities reporter Amanda Morris. “And it's making our lives harder, a lot harder.”Yet paying workers with disabilities far below minimum wage is completely legal. Muniz is one of tens of thousands of workers with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are paid subminimum wages at facilities across the country. The labor program, sanctioned by federal law, is supposed to prepare workers for higher-paying jobs in the community, and while many families support them, Morris and her colleagues Caitlin Gilbert and Jacqueline Alemany found in a months-long investigation that they often lack oversight and accountability. The birth of Jesus is an important even for both Muslims and Christians, but there are some key differences in how the nativity story is told. For any Christians expecting to hear about donkeys and asses, innkeepers and shepherds there's disappointment in store: these do not feature in the Islamic nativity story, although Mary and the Angel Gabriel do enjoy a key role! Azim Ahmed explores the Islamic traditions of Jesus, who is regarded not as the Son of God, but as an important prophet. For some critical scholars such as Professor Gabriel Said Reynolds the Islamic narrative derives from earlier Christian sources, sometimes from texts that were banned by the mainstream church. For Muslims such as Ahmad Thomson, however, the version contained within the Qur'an is the definitive one, revealed to the Prophet by the Angel Gabriel. Both traditions, however, are united in their belief in the virgin birth, and the eventual return of Jesus at the Second Coming. Rana Kahn, the Church in Wales' representative on interfaith matters, takes an even handed view of both the Biblical and the Quranic versions, whilst for Amanda Morris the story of Mary giving birth alone to Jesus is a story of immense emotional power. Today on “Post Reports,” how artificial intelligence can re-create voices that may have otherwise been lost to disease.Read more:When Mark Dyer was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) last year, he started on a difficult checklist. He got his will in order; he got set up to receive Social Security and disability benefits. But of all the things Mark had to do to get ready for life with ALS, there was one thing he found himself putting off: voice- and phrase-banking. These technologies allow people with ALS, who may eventually lose the ability to speak, to communicate using a recorded, synthetic version of their own voice. And artificial intelligence is allowing ALS patients to sound more like themselves. Today on “Post Reports,” we talk to reporter Amanda Morris about the technology that preserves voices that would otherwise be lost to disease. We explore what improvements to this technology mean for the mental health of the patients using synthetic voices.“We often talk about artificial intelligence in a negative way,” Morris says. “But what I thought was interesting about this story is that we look at some of the positive impacts that artificial intelligence is having on people who have different conditions and disabilities. And, sometimes I think it's nice to tell a good story.”

We got some very good news from a late-stage clinical trial for a drug that slowed down the progression of Alzheimer's. Biogen and Eisai's drug slowed down the cognitive decline in participants by 27% compared to those that received placebos. The drug does not restore mental capacity or totally stop it, but works by clearing out the buildup of amyloid, a toxic protein that affects the brain. Robert Langreth, science and health reporter at Bloomberg News, joins us for what to know. Next, the big space news from Monday was NASA's successful DART mission, the first planetary defense test. For this test NASA flew an unmanned spacecraft right into a asteroid to test if the impact could disrupt its orbit. It will still take some weeks for more complete data, but for now, it worked and made for some very compelling video as it made impact. Miriam Kramer, space reporter at Axios, joins us for more. Finally, when Covid-19 vaccines were first rolled out, many women were complaining about a strange side effect. They said it was messing with their menstrual cycles. Turns out, it was true. In a study of nearly 20,000 people and with data from a popular period-tracking app, researchers found out that on average vaccinated women experienced a one-day delay in getting their periods, but it was only temporary. I've included some descriptions here. MOFs / Metalo-organic frameworks – Compounds made of metal ions, or clusters, connected to organic ligands, creating specific structures. They are often poruous materialsArtificial photosynthesis – A human-designed process that creates energy from Co2, water and sunlight, mimicking the same process which occurs naturally in plants.Catalysis – Increasing the rate of a chemical reaction by adding a catalyst.CO2 – Carbon Dioxide, one of the major greenhouse gases, and one of the molecules used by plants to create energy from photosynthesis.Reducing / reduction – the gain of electrons, or a decrease in the oxidation state of an ion (or at specific sites in a molecule).Oxidation / oxidizing - the loss of electrons, or an increase in the oxidation state of an ion (or at specific sites in a molecule).Redox – A chemical reaction where the oxiadtaion states of atoms are changed. Typically the transfer of electrons leads to oxidation of one chemical component in the reaction, and the reduction of other chemical components.Heterogenous surface – A non-uniform surface, which allows different chemical reactions to occur at different points.Turnover number – The number of moles of substrate (a measure of the total number of molecules) that a catalyst can convert before becoming inactivated.Nano particles – A particle of matter in the range of 1 to 100 nm in diameter.Protons – A sub-atomic particle with a positive electric charge of +1e, present in the nucleus of every atom.Electron - A sub-atomic particle with a negative electric charge of -1e, which display properties of both particles and waves.Solar photons – Particles of light emitted from the Sun.Chlorophyll – A word to describe any one of a number of related green pigments found in plants, algae and bacteria. Chlorophyll absorbs energy from sunlight and, along with other molecules, uses that sunlight to provide energy for plant cells, ultimately through the oxidation of water.Chromophore – The part of a molecule that is responsible for its color. More than 4000 athletes are competing in this year's Paralympics, which kicks off today in Tokyo. Their families aren't allowed to travel with them because of COVID restrictions, but some rely on their parents as caregivers. “For Paralympians … it's not just about having support from your family. It's about having literal tools that you need to succeed in competition. And they argue that it's an accessibility accommodation that they require to compete,” says Amanda Morris, a disability reporting fellow for The New York Times. U.S. swimmer Becca Meyers, who withdrew from this year's competition, says she needs one-on-one personal care. Morris recalls what happened during the 2016 Paralympics: “She found that nobody was around to give her the level of care and support that she needed. She wasn't able to go to dining halls and wasn't able to successfully navigate on her own. She is both blind and deaf, and said that she ended up sobbing on the floor of her hotel room because she wasn't getting enough to eat.”

What if we could produce an energy-dense carbon-neutral fuel that suits uses of fossil fuels? Researchers like Amanda Morris are working with different types of solar energy conversion to produce such a fuel, and the potential is promising, exiting, and challenging. Listen in to this conversation about solar energy and its applications and learn How her lab is trying to imitate the chemical process a plant uses in photosynthesis to tap in to renewable energy sources for vehicle fuel, How she works with "material scaffolds" to solve some of the challenges, and What the timeline looks like for this technology and what breakthroughs are needed. Amanda J. Morris is a professor and associate chair of the Department of Chemistry at Virginia Tech. She's spent her career addressing environmental issues like climate change through scientific solutions. Currently her lab is trying to imitate the photosynthesis process to produce a fuel that could replace fossil fuels. As plants convert sun energy and carbon dioxide to make sugar, solar energy conversion technology hopes to turn the same products into something we can use to fill up our cars. She gets more specific, explaining how this differs from solar panel energy conversion. Rather than send those electrons and positively charged holes into circuits, she wants to put them on carbon dioxide and water molecules, producing methane after reduction and oxidation. But there are a couple of interesting puzzles along the way that can be summarized by two main goals: first, they need to refine the process of harnessing the sun energy closer to that of plants. Plants are green because of the chlorophyll that's responsible for capturing solar energy. She and her colleagues are trying to imitate and manipulate that chlorophyll process, reenacting the chemical environment in a way to produce this fuel. Second, water oxidation possess a tremendous challenge. Getting electrons from water is incredibly difficult to do without producing highly reactive oxidizing species. They are trying to make something stable, but with the right geometry to drive the chemistry energy. The potential that comes from solving these challenges are exciting, offering numerous solutions for environmental problems and climate-friendly technologies. I met her at Cookie Con 2017 and she has left a forever happy place in my heart. Maybe I should start from the beginning. Every time I go to Cookie Con I make new friends and sometimes, they introduce me to some of their sweet friends. Well, that is how I met Frances Fu Toit and I'm glad I did. My friend Diane from Mama Mayer Bakery brought Barbara Poirrier from Cajun Home Sweets, Amanda Morris from Semi Sweet Confections and Frances Du Toit to breakfast with her. As my husband and I sat there enjoying 'cookie company' I decided to ask everyone how they got started decorating cookies. When Frances spoke, I sat there with my jaw on the floor. She started telling us her story and we all were completely amazed, speechless, and inspired. Even my husband, who doesn't even eat sugar cookies, was listening to every word Frances had to say.
