AmiSights: Financing the Future For Small Business Owners and Entrepreneurs
On this episode, Ami Kassar interviews Stephan Aarstol, Founder of Tower Paddle Boards, on if he had to do it all over again, would he have gone on Shark Tank? With over two decades of Internet experience at the executive level, Stephan is an Internet industry veteran. He has founded a number of ventures including the No Middleman Project, Tower Electric Bikes, Tower Paddle Boards, the Tower Beach Club, Sidepot Gaming, and more. Founded in 2010 and funded by billionaire Mark Cuban, Tower Paddle Boards is one of the biggest success stories in Shark Tank history. With only $100K in lifetime sales at the time of the 2011 pitch, Cuban invested just $150K, and since then Tower has done well over $40M in sales. In 2014 with a staff of just 5 people and revenues of $5M, Tower was named the #1 fastest growing private company in San Diego by the San Diego Business Journal. A year later Tower was #239 on the INC 500 list of America's fastest growing companies. Tower was the #1 brand out of over 2 million 3rd party sellers signed up for the pilot Amazon Exclusives program, and he and his company were mentioned by name in Jeff Bezos' 2015 annual letter to stockholders. Tower was named to Internet Retailer's 2016 "Hot 100" list of the world's most innovative e-retailers. Stephan holds an MBA in New Venture Management from the University of San Diego. He is a widely published entrepreneurial thought leader and he speaks regularly at Harvard Business School on the recently published HBS case study, “Selling on Amazon at Tower Paddle Boards”. In 2015, to challenge long held delusions about unhealthy start-up work culture, Stephan moved his whole company to a 5-hour workday and would later write a book titled “The Five Hour Workday” about the experience, which would spread the idea to tens of millions of people worldwide, and get press in over 20 countries (New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, and more). He was subsequently hailed, "The World's Best Boss" by Hamburg Germany's #2 newspaper, MorgenPost, and "America's Best Boss" by the UK's Daily Mail. Recorded 01/18/2023.
For the last installment of our first season of Get Ship Done, host J.B. Hager sits down with ecommerce revolutionary Stephan Aarstol to get to the heart of how he identifies niche markets, ships out oversized products, and what his businesses have done to stand out in a monopolized industry.
Stephan Aarstol is well known for his appearance on Shark Tank as the founder and CEO of Tower Paddle Boards and Tower Electric Bikes. After being funded by Mark Cuban on ABC's Shark Tank in 2012, Tower went on to become one of the biggest success stories in the history of the show. As an internet business entrepreneur since 1999, Stephan felt it was time for another disruption and wanted to force creative thinking? Through his new book, The Five Hour Workday. In this episode, Stephan shares the principles needed to spark creative thinking, and why it doesn't take a traditional eight-hour day. Key Takeaways [2:10] Stephan shares something about himself that not many people know about. [3:10] Stephan explains what is the most important leadership quality an entrepreneur needs. [5:55] In the tech world where everything is fast-changing, we need to keep pace and be more agile. Stephan shares what are the early warning signs to be aware of. [7:05) Stephan shares an example of how not to spend money unnecessarily in order to be profitable. [10:25] Stephan is known for having the worst pitch on Shark Tank. Despite this, he was still able to land the deal. [12:40] Stephan shares what his go-to questions would be if he was a Shark on Shark Tank. [16:05] As a mature business owner, Stephan looks at things differently now. However, when you have nothing to lose, that's the perfect time to start a business. [18:00] Stephan talks about his journey into writing The Five Hour Workday. [20:25] The key difference between Stephan's book and Tim Ferriss's The Four Hour Work Week was that Ferriss's book was about individuals outsourcing their work and compressing their days. Stephan wanted to apply the same principles to an organizational framework. [21:45] During the pandemic when Tower was about to go bankrupt, they used their ability to work faster to double their productivity. They did it for a year and were able to double their revenues. [22:30] Stephan shares how he overcame the challenge for his organization to use The Five Hour Workday as a motivation rather than an entitlement. [24:35] The pandemic created a constraint for all businesses and his book has found new interest because work has changed now. The pandemic allowed businesses to go into creative thinking. [25:45] Remote work is going to work for at least 10% of the population as they are intrinsically motivated. However, the remaining 90% look for the path of least resistance. Stephan shares his prediction and why remote work could be a disaster. [28:00] Being called The World's Best Boss, Stephan shares his thoughts about having this title. [31:00] Constraint is how you change the way you work from being traditional to becoming disruptive and forcing creative thinking. [33:10] Stephan also talks about his key takeaway from Tim Ferris's book: Management by absence. [34:30] One of the biggest leadership lessons Stephan had was going through trial and error. [35:50] The biggest advantage of being an entrepreneur with a small company is you get to pick the people you take on your journey and experience hardships with. [37:05] Looking back, Stephan shares what he would do differently, historically and moving forward. [42:00] Listener challenge: We're in a scary time. Figure out how to get your burn rate to negative and diversify. Quotable Quotes “When you're in college, this is the time to have a business because you have nothing to lose. You have no experience - and you have nothing to lose.” “We squeezed people for time during the busy season and that's the magic of it. You put an unrealistic constraint and that forces creative thinking.” “Start-ups basically disrupt the world constantly and it's because of constraints. Constraint is the way you do it. That's what we did with The Five Hour Workday.” “The world has changed and we have these very powerful companies. We are in a really scary time right now and I would say, go for cover and figure out how to get your burn rate to negative and diversify.” Resources Mentioned Theleadershippodcast.com Sponsored by: Darley.com Towerelectricbikes.com Stephan on Linkedin Stephan on Twitter Stephan on Instagram Grab Stephan's book: The Five Hour Workday: Live Differently, Unlock Productivity, and Find Happiness The 4-Hour Workweek, by Tim Ferriss

Have you ever wondered why an eight-hour workday is standard for most workers? It's not because of productivity or circadian rhythms. The eight-hour workday was another innovation by Henry Ford. During the industrial revolution, most workers worked 12 to 16 hours a day, six days a week. Ford reduced hours and doubled pay, creating a safer environment and a customer base for his products. Stephan Aarstol is another innovative leader. In 2015, he reduced the working hours at his company to five-hour days. He thought the gift of time would be an excellent perk to attract the best and the brightest team members and help his brand live up to the surfer lifestyle. Stephan is the founder of Tower Paddle Boards, a direct-to-consumer SUP company. Keeping up with his surf brand, he has now added Tower Electric Bikes. Stephan was also on Shark Tank and landed a deal with Mark Cuban. He is the author of The Five-Hour Workday: Live Differently, Unlock Productivity, and Find Happiness. He's an entrepreneur, speaker, and author. He's been featured on multiple national publications and news programs. Today, we talk about his five-hour workday experiment and what went right and what didn't go right. We dive into his story and talk about maximizing productivity, valuing time, direct-to-consumer brands, and so much more. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to pitch your business on the hit TV show Shark Tank? In our interview with Stephan Aarstol, we discussed how he choked up during his pitch on Shark Tank to landing a $150K investment from billionaire Mark Cuban. We discuss what it was like behind the scenes on the show and his partnership with a Shark. In this episode, you will learn how Stephan created Tower Paddle Boards by disrupting distribution channels - instead of focusing on advertising and refusing to have major retailers carry his products - and increasing revenue from $100k in 2013 to $40 million today. We also uncover Stephan's Book The 5 Hour Workday and how changing his company culture has helped and hurt his business.

Sometimes you don’t have to live so much of a structured life. It also pays to trust your gut, to really start enjoying and living your dreams awake. Often, many people would wait to do their dreams and sadly their dreams died with them. Be more fluid! This whole thing about Covid is really scary and has really shaken people to the core, but you just have to build on resilience. Sometimes obstacles are really just in the head. There is a bigger plan and now is the time of huge transformation. Our conversation with our guest is around this topic of creating your life now and you don’t have to wait or go on a vacation in order to feel what life is. My guest is Wendy Schultz, who is referred to as the "vacation rental guru", but before being one, had to realize that she was stressed out, burned out and working long hours. She had to go through several pivots in life, but she stayed head on until she found what her real passion is. Be inspired by her story. Enjoy listening! REMEMBER - “When you follow your gut, you will find the magic” This week's Feng Shui tip is to help you attract and go to places that you've always dreamed of. So if you like more adventure or go on more exotic travels, this is so simple. All you have to do is buy the guide books of where you want to visit, go to travel agents and pick some of the brochures, get some artifacts or some images of these places that you want to visit. Place them in your home, in a position where you can see them on a regular basis. By doing so you're not only reminding yourself, but you're also energizing your life to attract this incredible trip and adventures to your life. WHAT WE COVER DURING THIS EPISODE: How Wendy and Patricia met - a stroke of fate on national TV? Patricia’s side story about living in the now. Don’t wait for an excuse to do something.. How did Wendy get into vacation rentals after so many pivots? What does a Wendy Day look like? (...How does she have vacation rentals in Wisconsin and live in Florida?) Getting outside of the comfort zone and how to overcome obstacles? The bigger plan, the time of huge transformation. Opening up to new opportunities, the not so easy transitions. Reacting to change, thoughts about security. (...How to build solid confidence and rely on yourself? On the show with me today is Stephan Aarstol; founder of Tower Paddle Boards and a number of other direct to consumer brands. Back in 2010, Stephan was barely 6 months into his venture when he received a call from a TV producer for a show he'd never heard of. It was called Shark Tank - and it changed Stephan's life. After hearing Stephan's pitch, Mark Cuban decided to invest $150K in Mark's company, and that company wen on to become one of the biggest success stories in Shark Tank history. Since then, Mark has been a partner in virtually every business Stephan has started. In Stephan and I's conversation, we talked about what it was like to start a company in a highly competitive market, what it was like to work with Mark Cuban, and why he eventually implemented (and wrote a book about) the 5 hour work day in that company. If you are an entrepreneur looking for ways to make your company stand out, this episode is for you. Questions I Asked Stephan: [02:20] How did you come up with the idea for Tower Paddle Boards? [03:19] Did you know anything about making paddle boards? [05:44] How long had inflatable paddle boards been around when you launched? [11:30] How long did it take to get the first $100K in revenue? [12:15] How did Shark Tank play a role? [14:35] What was it about your pitch that appealed to Mark [19:18] What was it like working with Mark as an investor? [22:44] Of all the things you've learned from Mark, what was his greatest lesson? [26:41] When and why did you decide to convert to a 5 hour workday? [29:31] Why did you choose to make this shift to a 5 hour work day? [32:24] Tell me about some of the productivity hacks that your team discovered? [33:45] Why did you shift to 5 hours days in the summer only? [34:20] What was the impact on recruitment and retention? [35:30] How has it evolved since and why? [36:51] What advice would you give to others thinking of trying it out? In this episode… As ecommerce giants like Amazon continue their path to increasing control of the marketplace, where does that leave customers? Can a direct to consumer platform wrestle the spotlight away from Amazon and others? On this episode of Inspired Insider, you’ll hear from entrepreneur and innovator Stephan Aarstol. In his conversation with Jeremy, Stephan opens up about his experience on Shark Tank, how he developed Tower’s branding, what it is like working with Mark Cuban, why he created No Middleman, and much more. You don’t want to miss a minute of this fascinating episode featuring Stephan’s story! Can you imagine what it would be like to have your organization featured on a high profile show like Shark Tank? What would you do to make your product or service stand out from all the rest? Stephan Aarstol had the opportunity to feature his brand, Tower Paddle Boards, on one of the early seasons of Shark Tank. Benefiting from that experience, Tower Paddle Boards was able to secure funding and additional investment by Mark Cuban. They’ve since increased their profits and the reach of their brand by leaps and bounds. Make sure to check out the link to the Tower Paddle Boards site located in the resources section at the end of this post. Did you know there is a lot of power in authenticity and constancy? It’s true! When you look at the landscape of today’s marketplace you can see that brands are making a massive shift to align with the values of Millennials, chief among those values is authenticity. Is your brand authentic? Is it trying to be something that it is not? As he built Tower Paddle Boards, Stephan Aarstol forced himself and his team to ask this question as they worked to expand the brand and feature new products. Would it make sense for a beach themed brand to put out pillowcases? No! Don’t try to be something you are not, embrace your esthetic, don’t run from it. What would it take to even the playing field and bring more options to customers in today’s ecommerce marketplace? What if there was a platform like Amazon, but instead of Amazon’s best interests at heart, it had customers? Seeing a noticeable gap in the marketplace, Stephan Aarstol went to work creating a new direct to consumer platform called, No Middleman. Stephan and his team have created a searchable directory and online showroom for the worlds best direct to consumer products and brands. With today’s ecommerce landscape, there is no reason why intelligent consumers shouldn’t have a platform they can trust. Learn more about No Middleman by checking out their website, located in the resources section at the end of this post. You’ve heard the adage, “Work smarter, not harder.” What if more businesses actually operated with that concept at the forefront? Would we see more organizations adjusting their business practices around the actual workload instead of a bygone system? Stephan Aarstol thinks so! In his conversation with Jeremy, Stephan talked about his “Five Hour Workday” model that he’s implemented throughout his organization. People thought Stephan was crazy for taking this radical step, but the truth is, it worked! Stephan’s organization embraced this concept and thrived as a result. Stephan Aarstol is the CEO and Founder of Tower Paddle Boards. He is the genius behind the five-hour workday, which has revolutionized the entrepreneurial industry. Today he shares with Jesse Cole the story of this innovative move and the purpose that drives him to perfect the experience for both his customers and employees. "We needed to really start measuring things by gross happiness product as opposed to just GDP." - Stephan Aarstol Stephan Aarstol - Eight-Hour Workdays are Unfounded The history of the eight-hour workday can be traced back to the dawn of the industrial revolution back in the 1800s. To maximize machines, they were run full-time, all-day. This benefited the factory workers who worked three eight-hour shifts in the span of twenty-four hours. Fast forward five hundred years later and people are still working the same eight-hour shifts. What people fail to understand is that there is no science to this eight-hour workday. A Life-Altering Assignment Stephan used to write articles for a company. They would give him topics to write about, and it was the assignment on a five-hour workday that began it all. In order to finish the assignment, he started an experiment in the company. It was an uncomfortable exercise, but realizing how it was exactly how he worked, he thought that the entire company should do the same. A series of experiments and one published article later, they had built a brand that was as unique as it could get and kept people happy. "If you start giving people a lot more time, they can use that time for different things." - Stephan Aarstol Happiness is Important When he first implemented the five-hour workday, Stephan hit a lot of walls. His employees left, feeling lost. But at the same time, all kinds of people with different levels of productivity started trickling in, curious and wanting to learn more. The entire experience has left a great impression on him. And it has made him realize the many ways by which prevailing economic trends have enslaved people. Happiness, therefore, has become more of a privilege than a causal effect of working. "That flexibility of giving people time and do with it what you want is a huge beneficial thing. And I think some people don't even realize that they need that. But I think it is important for them." - Stephan Aarstol Final Four 1. What have you done to stand out in business and in life? “I've always tried to identify businesses that really add something to humanity.” 2. What advice would you give someone to stand out in business and in life? “Try. Just start it now.” 3. What is the best advice you received? “Focus more on the downside risk.” 4. How do you want to be remembered? “For being willing to do what it takes to do what I want and then to share that and help other people to do what they want.” To hear what Stephan Aarstol thinks about the impact of capitalism on our work mentality, the true benefits of the five-hour workday on productivity, and the merits of a culture founded on happiness, download and listen to the show! My first episode presents a conversation with Stephan Aarstol, a southern California entrepreneur, founder of the stand-up paddleboard and beach lifestyle company Tower Paddleboards, and author of The Five-Hour Workday. Stephan talks about how he decided to move his company to a five-hour workday; what challenges you face when you shorten the workday; and what benefits come from it. Lots of people who've implemented shorter working hours at their company mention Stephan's work as an inspiration, so it made sense to start with his story. And my kids love stand-up paddleboards (I'm more of a kayaker), so saying I know the guy who helped popularize them was an effort to curry favor with them. It didn't work, but still it was a fascinating conversation. This episode is part of the disruption series. We're going to discover how incredible people disrupt their lives, their industries, and the world to create a powerful impact. Stephan Aarstol is the Founder & CEO at Tower Paddle Boards, author of The Five Hour Workday, and one of the most unique success stories from ABC's Shark Tank. Stephan didn't have the most elegant pitch on Shark Tank, but he still secured investment from Mark Cuban. The show wasn't his endgame – it was just the first stepping stone towards disrupting an industry. The five-hour workday was the second stepping stone. “You want to get your employees to where they'll run through walls for you. To do that in the modern world with knowledge workers, you can't whip them harder or give them a little bit more money. You have to do something that is meaningful to them.” Tower Paddle Boards was an attractive place to work, but they still lost some of their top talent. Stephan wanted to sweeten the pot. How does Stephan change his company to attract the best people? Transition from an e-commerce company to a brand Embrace a consistent company culture Shorten the workday (for the same compensation) Stephan wanted to attract efficient team members and repel slow workers; he wanted superstars. If you can adapt to a five-hour workday, you are rewarded with more control over your work life and personal life. If you can't adapt, you're fired. This strategy puts full autonomy and pressure on the employee to figure things out, and the end result is that they actually think and act a lot more like entrepreneurs. The friction helps them cut waste and identify better tools. “You turn everybody into their own little productivity expert.” Think about how you work – don't be satisfied with just working. The traditional eight-hour work day is outdated and now irrelevant. Recent data shows workers have the power to be massively more productive but also waste an extraordinary amount of time as they only do about two to three hors of real work a day while clocking in at eight. Author of The Five-Hour Workday and ABC's Shark Tank Winner Stephan Aartstol shows us a five-hour workday can actually enpower and incentivize employees to be truly efficient.

What if you could actually earn more and work less? That’s what we’re discussing in today’s episode of the Cash Flow Diary podcast. Author and guest Stephan Aarstol pitched his company on Shark Tank, my all-time favorite show, and built his business using a 5-hour work day model. Known as being one of the worst pitches but one of the best-funded companies on Shark Tank, Stephan knows a lot about keeping your work week hours to a minimum to get more free time to pursue a better balance in our lives. According to Stephan, as a country and culture we’re working more hours today and yet earning less, which is something he tells us we don’t have to do to attain the success we desire. But he didn’t always know the “secret” to being a 5-hour-work-day guy he is now. Early on, he learned Internet marketing in the medical imaging space. It was a start-up that was going great guns until the bubble burst and he had to change paths. The entrepreneurial bug bit him hard. So while working his day job, he started his own business on the side that would create and sell really good-looking poker chips (www.buypokerchips.com). It took him about a year to quit his day job… when it was earning him about $50K a month in sales. When it plateaued, he entered a paddleboard business as the founder of Tower Paddle Boards. His company is now the fastest-growing company in his city. Over time Stephan became known as an Internet “guru.” As a knowledge worker, Stephan says he will never stop learning and he likes his work, so it will be a long time before he actually retires. If you want to learn why Stephan started using a 5-hour work day, you’re going to have to listen to this episode. It has to do with employee recruitment and retention, so it’s worth your time to lend it your ear!! Learn more. Listen now.
