On this weeks episode of CSG, Tyler invites his pastor, Bruce Seivers, on for a discussion about simply, how to fight sin! Scripture is expounded and "how to" steps are given to begin overcoming sin and becoming more like Jesus tonight! Sanctification is not an instantaneous thing that just happens overnight, rather a process that continues, in my opinion anyway, into eternity! We have been given eternal life now, and we are commanded by our Lord and Savior to "be holy", but where we begin? Are there any steps we can take to actually defeat these sins that so easily conquer us and sinful habits we've been so accustomed to over the years? Can we, in this flesh, become perfect? Also what did Jesus and the apostles do when they were tempted to sin and how did they overcome? As Bruce and I tackle these questions and more on our 40th episode of CSG may we all remember that in trusting Jesus with salvation as a whole, we can also trust Him to sanctify us by the power of the same Holy Spirit who raised Him from the dead!

Wondering how to balance your unique age, stage, personalities, and goals? Does estate planning feel constrictive, or your ambitions seem bigger than what you can accommodate with a finite plan? Do you wonder how you could possibly know what's best 30 years from now when you're not sure who your children will become? Today, we want to help you wrestle the giant octopus of long-range planning. Bruce and I are talking with my estate planning attorney, Stephen Haynes, about solving special considerations with your estate plan. And this will be a special treat! We're not just going to talk theory about estate planning. We're inviting you in and showing a sneak peek into how we created an estate plan for our family. So if you want to recognize the pros and cons of various estate transfer strategies, achieve the best balance of asset protection, creditor protection, control, and ownership, and find out how to design your estate plan to solve your needs best so you can strengthen your family with how you pass on wealth, instead of causing future challenges, tune in now! In This Conversation about Custom-Designed Estate Planning with Stephen Haynes 400800800 Deciding how to transfer trust assets to children in a way that provides for their needs and helps them become empowered and not entitled.Solving the tension of gifting assets outright vs. in trust, and why you may consider one over the other. How to achieve the balance of asset protection and creditor protection with control and ownership, and reduce the risk of estate taxes. The role of the trustee, the goal of the trust to be a relationship, how to select a trustee, and how to set up your children to have a good relationship with the trustee.Hear how we're solving the potential problem of children seeing that a trustee is trying to keep them from their money.Finding the middle ground between leaving direct guidance to the trustee with rigid wishes vs. leaving discretion to the trustee. How to direct your money to be used the way you want, while also providing for the freedom and flourishing of each individual in generations beyond you.How you can use life insurance to create perpetual, generational wealth. Where Estate Planning Fits into Your Cashflow Creation System Encircling your family and assets with a bulletproof estate plan will maximize your peace of mind. But it's just one small step of a greater journey. That's why we've put together the 3-step Entrepreneur's Cash Flow System. The first step is keeping more of the money you make. This includes tax planning, debt restructuring, cash flow awareness, and restructuring your savings so you can access it as an emergency/opportunity fund. This step frees up and increases your cash flow, so you have more to save, and consequently, more to invest. Then, you'll protect your money with savings, privatized banking and legal protection. This is where estate planning fits in. You'll know that no matter what happens to you, your wishes will be carried out, your assets will remain intact, and your wisdom will empower generations after you. Finally, you'll put your money to work and get it to make more by investing in cash-flowing assets to build time and money freedom and leave a rich legacy. Take Action to Begin Your Family Legacy Today Take the next steps today. As Bruce says, "Make small steps, but quality steps." You don't have to leap the whole chasm all at once. Today's small step may look like taking a minute to write down what's important to you. This may become the start of your personal values or vision statement. Or, if you are ready for a conversation about your estate planning or life insurance, your next step could be scheduling a conversation. Find Out More About Stephen Haynes

It was on August 25th of 1975 that the relatively unknown Jersey boy named Bruce Springsteen released his third studio album called 'Born To Run'. Prior to that summer Bruce was relatively unknown by the mainstream and about to be dropped by his record label. But by the end of the summer of 1975, all that would change with 'Born To Run' and by the fall he would find himself on the cover of both Time and Newsweek. But it didn’t come easy. With pressure from his record label to come up with a hit album, Bruce drove both himself and his E Street Band to the brink of a near mental breakdown over several torturous months. As Bruce put it to Rolling Stone, "It felt like there were gonna be no more records after this record. We were all going off a cliff the next day, as far as my approach to it."This is the story of the album that pulled Bruce from the edge of that cliff and eventually secured him a permanent place in rock history - 'Born To Run'.SIDE ONE:1. Our two coach panelists have both been on the show before. Bruce Eckfeldt is a consultant, Certified Gazelles coach, and speaker on organizational development and performance management. Anita Cabell is the Founder of Leading Edge and has been in the Chinese market for the last 18-plus years as a Scaling Up Coach. Today’s panel dives in on what they’ve been seeing when it comes to scaling forward during this pandemic. Bill has seen some surprising things happen this quarter, as some of his clients have been able to scale effectively to $1 million-plus in their revenue. Anita has been working globally for a number of years and her advice is to not be afraid of the virtual world. There is so much that can get done. Anita has a lot of Asian clients and since they were hit first, she was able to see what they did to pivot and bring that knowledge and advice back to her U.S. clients. Bruce has seen two things happening here when it comes to pivoting and scaling forward. The first is that his clients have been very quick to get a top-down approach and look to where their company can change and adapt within the market. Second, the mindset of the entrepreneur is very flexible. Those who have seen this level of crisis before are taking this as just another challenge to work through. As Bruce is currently working with a lot of CEOs in New York, he is noticing a lot of them are comparing these new events to 9/11. It’s bringing back memories of how to figure out things when everything was uncertain and up in the air. When this pandemic hit, Bill was concerned. He thought he might have to retire early because we were going through a recession. Not wanting to have idle hands, he provided coaching services for free or ‘pay what you can’ and because of this, his business is thriving and busier than ever, and revenues are up! Helen Leake is one of Australia's most accomplished creative producers. Her feature credits include HEAVEN'S BURNING with Russell Crowe, BLACK AND WHITE starring Robert Carlyle, SWERVE with Jason Clarke, and WOLF CREEK 2. Her films have been selected for over 30 international Film Festivals, including Venice, Toronto (twice), London (twice), Karlovy Vary and Pusan. Helen develops intellectual property into world-class screen stories for the big screen, streaming services or networks depending on the content and style. Helen is working again with writer Louis Nowra after a successful collaboration on BLACK AND WHITE, a period drama which opened the Sydney Film Festival. Justice Michael Kirby said “every person in the country should watch this film”, critic Andrew Urban “(it is) the sort of film Australia should be making” and The Times London said “… a challenging film that dares to trust our intelligence”. Louis agreed to take on the commission of MONASH and the script has attracted one of Australia's most talented and accomplished directors, Bruce Beresford. This film will be an important contribution to Australia's culture, and tells the story of one of Australia's greatest heroes. www.duoart.com.au www.dancingroad.com Producers Helen Leake and Gena Ashwell and director Bruce Beresford aim to start shooting Monash, a biopic of Sir John Monash, hailed by many as the foremost Allied military commander in World War 1, in Europe in the northern spring. The screenplay is by Louis Nowra, who started collaborating with Leake in 2012. Beresford joined the project in the middle of last year. Leake and her Dancing Road Productions partner Ashwell have secured investment from the UK and France and are confident of raising the rest of the budget in Australia, including the Producer Offset. They plan to start shooting in France and England next May/June with a high-profile ensemble cast of Aussies and Brits. Screen Australia has provided story development funding. Explaining the rationale for the film, Leake tells IF: “Monash was a winner, a hero, unlike the Gallipoli story which was about loss. As Bruce said, ‘We have to make this film because there is a whole generation who know nothing about him or WW1 generally.'”
With the utmost of respect, the gathered masses of penguins see their wayward son off for the final time. As the black ooze seeps from his mouth, the life leaves him... to then enter some gingerbread or not is up for debate. Minute 94 (94) starts with a bang as The Penguin reveals the plan - kidnap them kids and make the folks pay! DEARLY! WITH DEATH! A vocal dissenter is shot down - you don't go against this master plan, damn it! As Bruce fixes his ride, Alfred pops up to remind him that he has a rather odious party he's supposed to attend. In this episode, host Cathy Booth catches up with Bruce Butler in the USA and teases out some top tips to arranging a successful ringing tour. Bruce has been organising ringing tours to the UK since the 1990s - the logistics of arranging transatlantic ringing tours in the days before the internet are mind-blowing.Having rung in almost 4,000 towers you might imagine the Bruce has some great stories to tell, and you wouldn’t be wrong. Hear about inaccessible spaces, strange ringing attire and some rather unusual furniture in the ringing chamber. And just watch out for the flowers around the font!Bruce gives a brilliant overview of the towers of North America, their various merits and the differences between ringing over there and in the UK. Trespassers saw our heroes crossing lines to save what was dear to them. Jim and Harvey had to journey to save the children. Bruce had to journey to find a cure for Selina. Even Riddler made a journey to find himself. But will their trespassing hurt them in the long run? Trespassers in the Dark Zone: ©2019 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: FOX Jim and Harvey learn that the kid walked from the dark zone of Gotham. Kids are being taken and forced to tunnel. The mainland will not help or resupply the GCPD and tells Jim to stand down. Jim will not have it. He needs supplies. He goes to the Siren club and Barbara is furious. She clears out the club. She says Jim didn't do anything when Penguin killed Tabitha. Jim says he took him down. She says he just re-cripled him. She gives Jim his pick of vehicles and says Gotham is welcome to take Jim down. The GCPD caravan makes it into the Dark Zone. They are attacked by crossbow arrows and molotov cocktails. Meanwhile the leader of the Soothsayers, Sykes, is mad at an older kid, Gabriel, because he didn't tell about the escape. They are trying to tunnel out of Gotham for supplies so they can run the city. Gabriel says they are hungry and exhausted. Sykes offers him his mask and tells him to take the Smoke. It will make him strong and even see the future. Gabriel refuses and is about to be shot when the GCPD show up. Sykes and the men go out and are surrounded. Jim frees the kids and gets them loaded up, but a firefight breaks out. Most of the trucks get away, but Jim, Harvey, Gabriel, and 2 others have to escape on foot. They seek refuge in an old hotel. Jim goes to check out the upstairs and sends Harvey to the basement. Harvey finds trays of rings, teeth and valuables. Then he sees a body burning in the furnace and a tray of fingers with rings still on them. Mother attacks him and he runs upstairs. Jim finds a boy upstairs. He says a ghost found him after his parents were killed. She was nice at first, but can be mean. She wants to be called Mother. Harvey comes up and the boy sends them into a room. He locks them in to be knocked out by lights and then killed. Mother comes in and a fight ensues. Harvey knocks out a window and Jim questions her. She escapes and they grab the kids and leave. They are about to leave when the Soothsayers and the other gang (who are painted like skeletons) trap them. They both want Jim's head for the Penguin's reward. Jim is down to 2 bullets and uses one to take out the Skeleton leader. Things look bad for the good guys, when a monster truck with a machine gun mows down both gangs. Babs has come to the rescue. Jim uses his last bullet to save her from Sykes. She wants to team up to kill Penguin. They table it and take the kids to the place Lucius Fox set up. it is a 250 rooms with everything. Once the kids came people from all over the city have come to the Haven. Jim is their savior. Babs leaves saying they are not even and will talk later. Trespassers in the Park: ©2019 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: FOX Bruce is seeking The Witch and he finds the right spot in Robinson Park. The place is overgrown with plants. He enters the building and finds it covered in plant growth. He also sees the plants eating dead bodies. Some men come after him. They have captured The Witch and have sent for others. People came to her for help and she killed them. She speaks to the plants and they do her bidding. But they captured her in a room with no light, no water, and salt on the ground. Bruce says he needs 5 min. with her to find out what happened to his brother. They let him in. Bruce finds Ivy there. She says the park's plants are alive and talk with her. He says he needs her help to heal a friend. She knows of a seed in the park that can heal, but needs to get out. Bruce takes her out and is trying to talk with the men, when she kills them all. She is feeding the park dead people and watching what grows. Bruce says the seed is for Selina. Ivy rejects him, because of what Selina did by destroying the Lazarus Water. But Bruce shows he is growing up and wise. He calls her out. She digs up the seed and says it will fuse the nerves and cartilage in Selina, if she is strong enough. But it will permanently change her. Letting the darker angels out. Bruce hurries back to the hospital. Alfred says Selina has not spoken. Bruce shares that the seed is from Ivy and Alfred cautions him. Selina says she wants to die and if Ivy does it so be it. She takes the seed and then talks about how she took Ivy under her wing. She cared for her and will always see her as that little kid. The seed takes hold and she begins to seize. Later the doctor says her fever shot up and her white blood cell count went off the charts. After 2 hours she stabilized. She still had pain, but was OK. Bruce and Alfred are about to leave, when Bruce notices Ivy gone. She is out of bed and walking. She says she feels better than before. As Bruce hugs her, her eyes go dark green and change to the iris' of a cat. Trespassers in a Turf War: ©2019 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: FOX The Riddler is still not in full control. He locked himself down with chains and locks before bed. He wakes up still chained and is so happy. But as he is taking a leak he hears mumbling in the shower. He looks and says it is a hallucination. But the mumbling continues. Tank, a member of the Street Demonz, is chained up in his tub. Looks like Ed got out after all and tortured Tank for info. Riddler has to do the same to get that same info. Ed was looking for the Demonz secret hide out and if their leader would be there. Riddler and Tank go and find the place quiet. All of the people there are dead, including the gang leader. On the wall is graffiti saying "Penguin was here." Looks like Ed wants to start a turf war between the two gangs. Riddler is still in the dark and does not know what Ed wants. Closing Thoughts: Trespassers was an interesting episode, but slower. It was a set up episode, but Trespassers moved several stories along. The changes to Selina will be explored next week, but are frightening. Ivy is crazy and powerful. Ed seems to be causing a turf war so he can take over, but will Riddler let him? Jim is being set up to be a savior. The mainland wants him to be a symbol of hope to Gotham, but Penguin might make him a martyr. I hope Trespassers was our only slower ep of the season. We will see. News: Penguin, Our Hero: With the creation of Haven as a safe place for refugees, Gordon hopes to stop the gang fighting in Gotham. Meanwhile, Selina is determined to find Jeremiah (guest star Cameron Monaghan) and she convinces Bruce to help her. Then, Penguin goes to Haven to reclaim his staff in the all-new “Penguin, Our Hero” episode of GOTHAM airing Thursday, Jan. 17 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. Special Guest: Brue Frasier On this week’s episode, the guys air an interview with Bruce Frasier of Dixondale Farms. While at a meeting in Chattanooga, Bruce and Greg had a chance to sit down and record a conversation for the Row by Row Garden Show. Dixondale Farms is the largest onion plant producer in the United States. As Bruce explains, if you purchase onion plants for your garden, there's a very high chance they were grown in Texas. Dixondale grows over 800 million onion plants per year, which include short-day, intermediate-day and long-day varieties. Bruce explains that the type of onion you grow will depend on your climate and daylength. When discussing fertilizer requirements for onions, Bruce likes to use 10-20-10 ratio that offers nitrogen. However, initially, phosphorous and potassium are what encourages root development in onions. Then they will take up the nitrogen and get growth and foliage. Bruce explains that a perfect onion has 13 rings. He explains how to grow the perfect onion in the garden. Greg mentions that the Texas Legend is his favorite variety to grow, and Bruce provides some other great variety suggestions for those living in northern climates. When discussing the red onion varieties his favorite is there exclusive Red Candy onion. According to Bruce producing red onion seeds are extremely difficult because they have a tendency to bolt easily. However, Red Candy is one of the most bolt-resistant varieties offered. So instead of a two-year process, they have to make it a three-year process which most other companies don't like to do. Bruce also mentions that they've recently started carrying shallots and leeks which are more fun to grow and great in soups. Shallots and leeks are known more in northern climate gardening than in the South. However, they can grow in the southern climates. Greg and Travis look forward to testing those out in their southern climate garden in the future. Show and Tell Segment On the Show & Tell segment this week, Greg has some pickled beets that a friend gave him. The guys have been growing beets consistently for a couple of years now and they intend to try picking some this year. Travis explains that he prefers to transplant beets as opposed to direct seeding them into the garden. This is because he can control the germination easier and get more consistently-sized beets and greens. Greg has some heirloom corn varieties, Bloody Butcher and Jimmy Red, that he harvested about a week ago from his vegetable garden. The tool of the week is our high carbon steel, diamond hoe that has nice quality ash handle with a wax finish instead of the lacquer handles that wear off easily. Viewer Questions Segment On the question and answer segment, the guys answer questions about weeding slow-germinating crops like carrots and cover crops for clay soils. For slow-germinating crops like carrots, Travis suggests several techniques that can be used to control weeds until the plants are able to outpace the weed growth. These techniques include flame weeding and wire weeding in addition to ensuring the weed seed bank is reduced as possible. Carrots do a lot better direct seeding than transplanting. Travis suggests using the wheel hoe to get the weed seed bank depleted off and clean before starting to plant. For clay soils, the guys recommend rooted vegetable cover crops like purple top turnips and daikon radishes. Because their roots penetrate deep into the soil, they do a great job of making the soil more workable while adding quality organic matter in the garden. It's all come to this. The Gotham Season 4 finale but thankfully not the Gotham Finale. We discuss our Top Five case notes in our Gotham Season 4 Episode 22 Review of "No Man's Land". As always make sure you've watched the episode before listening to the podcast. Synopsis for Gotham Season 4 Episode 22 Review No Man's Land Podcast Directed by: Nathan Hope Written by: Seth Boston and John Stephens As the army comes in to take control of Gotham and the city continues to be evacuated, Jeremiah Valeska (Cameron Monaghan), back behind bars at the GCPD, warns a skeptical Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) of more bombs and destruction to come. Meanwhile, Jim is kidnapped by The Riddler (Cory Michael Smith) and narrowly escapes death after Leslie Thompkins (Morena Baccarin) convinces Ed Nygma to leave Gotham. But Ra’s Al Ghul’s (Alexander Siddig) plan swings into action as a bomb detonates killing the Mayor of Gotham and forcing Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) to leave a hospitalised Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova) to confront Jeremiah at the G.C.P.D. But he in turn is kidnapped and taken to Ra’s where he is rescued by an unexpected team, Barbara Kean (Erin Richards), Tabitha Galavan (Jessica Lucas), Alfred Pennyworth (Sean Pertwee) and Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) who arrive, saving Bruce and killing Ra’s Al Ghul. As Bruce is saved Jeremiah's bombs destroy every bridge out of Gotham, reducing the city to lawlessness. As the city is carved up between competing criminal gangs Penguin takes his revenge out on Tabitha Galavan for the death of his mother and we say goodbye to Butch Gilzean/Solomon Grundy (Drew Powell). Finally Bruce Wayne is forced to make a life changing decision and to come to terms with his future in a Gotham that is cut-off from the outside world. The boys havin da craic, chatting about the legend that is Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee is still one of the most influential characters in our world today even though he has been gone for over 40 years (Born 1940, died 1973). As the inspiration for martial arts, the power of movement, the mixing of martial arts (MMA), exciting fight movies, fighting video games movies - he changed the way the world thought about fighting and self-defence. Also a mighty advocate for strength of mind and the success that comes from the hard work of mastering these life arts. In this podcast we discuss Bruce's early life and some of his achievements. We will do a part 2 in the future because there is so much more to tell...... The Bollox Alert is a dirty one you certainly know only too well already. The Hot Topic is a big big key to having freedom in life and peace of mind in a crazy world. As Bruce said - 'Martial Arts is honestly expressing yourself'. Extend that a step further - Life (as an art) is about honestly expressing yourself. Honestly...... This full podcast is also available with video on YouTube. Unfortunately, because Shooz was in fairyland and not on the ball, there is no sound. We put it up anyway so you can listen to the audio version and watch the YouTube in tandem if you want. The six diseases of the mind are obstacles that you will confront on your path to wholeness and fluidity. The Six Diseases: The desire for victory The desire to resort to technical cunning The desire to display all that has been learned The desire to awe the enemy The desire to play the passive role The desire to get rid of whatever disease one is affected by All of these diseases occur when we seek outside validation. The desire for victory is the desire to win at all costs, usually at the cost of someone else. Wanting to win is not a bad thing, but when it overtakes you and blinds you to everything else is when it becomes a problem. It becomes not about the victory itself, but about coveting and becoming attached to that outcome. The desire to resort to technical cunning is the desire to outsmart, to be overly clever, to the exclusion of other tools of success. This is being showy, flamboyant and attached to form. The desire to display all that has been learned this is the desire to appear super knowledgeable and “wow” people with your knowledge. Essentially, this is a desire to be a know-it-all and be better than everyone else in the room. This creates no space for anyone else’s opinion. The desire to awe the enemy this is the desire to have your enemy to look at you with fear and wonder. This is an intimidation through show of force. The desire to play the passive role this is the desire to be unaccountable or to be the martyr. This is a desire to appear easy going, but it can be used as a weapon of guilt. The desire to get rid of whatever disease one is affected by. It is good to want to get rid of your disease, but you don’t get rid of it by denying the disease, you get rid of it by being with it. By integrating it you see that you are participating in this disease; the desire to get rid of the disease is a fantasy of being perfect without working through it. “Any technique, however worthy and desirable, becomes a disease when the mind is obsessed with it.” Desire can quickly lead to obsession and can keep away from your real life. “The deluded mind is the mind affectively burdened by intellect. Thus, it cannot move without stopping and reflecting on itself. This obstructs its native fluidity.” “We should not seek knowledge, but discover the cause of our ignorance.” Take Action: Any tool becomes a problem if you rely too much on it. How much do you rely on outside validation? What changes are you resisting? Are your moods based on outside validation? Create a list of the times where you experienced each of the Six Diseases. #AAHA This week our #AAHA shout out goes to Chinese contemporary classical composer, Tan Dun. He’s known for doing the scores for “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, ” and “Hero” and composing music for the 2008 Beijing Olympics medal ceremonies. A lot Dun’s music incorporates organic materials such as paper, water, and stone and is often inspired by traditional Chinese theatrical and ritual performance. Tan Dun won an Academy Award for his score of “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” Dun continues to create audio-visual masterpieces, experimenting with theater, film, and opera. Tan Dun, thank you for your work and we think you’re awesome. #BruceLeeMoment This week our moment comes from listener Tony P.: “For Christmas several years ago, my wife bought me The Artist of Life. I could not put it down. For someone who could not finish even a short book before, I completed this book in record time. I also began to love Bruce for the philosophy and wisdom that he had. I have worked on putting his passion and commitment to excellence to work in all areas of my life. I now pick a couple of things I want to work on and I put my all into it. Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it. ~~ Bruce Lee Click Below to Listen to Today's Show Insert Podcast Link Here Don't go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it. Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself. . . . Who Do You Think You Are? Who are you? What is it to be yourself? About three years ago, I started wondering who I was, or more specifically I was looking for what my calling was. I wasn't happy with my current career choice. I had worked in the field for many years but wasn't feeling it any more. I had actually changed careers from that career about 5 years earlier, but went back into it after the mortgage crash. I had left IT and Enterprise Content Management and went into a sales role as a Loan Officer. I loved it, but the mortgage crash dashed that career. At the end of that run, I also purchased a Coffee News franchise. I became a publisher of "Good News" and sold advertising to local businesses. I loved it, too. While doing these two careers I started attending Business Networking International (BNI) and learned how to network. I joined and worked in the local Chambers of Commerce. I loved it. I loved to network with the local business and community leaders. I loved helping businesses grow and build their business and networks. Unfortunately, the economy that was driven by the real estate and building market in the local areas I worked went down considerably and that business failed as well. I was unable to pay the bills, unable to afford insurance, etc. I found a part-time job working at a local grocery store bakery for a couple years and work my way to a Bakery Manager position. I always strive to be my best and excel. I couldn't just be a bakery clerk. But, this wasn't what I wanted to do forever. I started looking for something with my prior experience and skills that could bring in a good salary. I was offered a position in the field I had left before in Enterprise Content Management in Lending and moved to California. After a couple years I realized I wasn't happy doing this. It paid well. I was well respected among my peers, but I just didn't enjoy it anymore. I wasn't feeling like I was making an impact. I wasn't feeling satisfied or significant. I heard about and then read Jeff Goins' book, The Art Of Work. Jeff said to think about what you were doing when you were the happiest in your life. What were you doing when you loved going to work or what did you do when you weren't at work that made you the happiest? Pick up Jeff's book here: On GoalGettingBook.com / Audible or [amazon template=image&chan=goalgettingpodcast&asin=0718022076] I sat down one day when I went for an early morning walk in the East Bay hills near my house, which I loved to do. I started thinking about when i was happiest. I realized it was when i was when I was doing these things: meeting new people marketing business networking working with and building communities online and offline speaking at events training people motivating others to reach and achieve their goals social media writing I joined a new Toastmasters club our company started so I could improve my public speaking and start meeting new people in the company. I started taking marketing and social media classes at UC Berkeley Extension. I decided I wanted to start working towards a career in marketing, social media, public speaking. I realized that the type of career that would work well for what I wanted to do, what I wanted to be, what would make me happy and satisfied was something in the line of Community Management. I started researching and learning. This was who I was. This is what would make me happy. Really? How did I know? This has been a long discourse to get to the point of this podcast episode, which is to talk about "Who Do You Think You Are?" If, as Bruce Lee says, you should "be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself" then shouldn't you know who you really are? How the heck do you do that? I started by doing what Jeff Goins suggested. I did find my dream job as a Community Manager. One of the great benefits of our company is that they value their employees. One of the benefits is they often allow us to take personality tests. Yes, there are personality tests. I've taken a few over the years, but I never really took the results and looked at what they meant. They are developed to give you an idea of the strengths and weaknesses you have based on your personality. YOUR PERSONALITY, not someone else's. As Bruce said, "don't look for a successful personality and duplicate......" There are several of these types of tests: Gallup StrengthsFinder Myers-Briggs DISC 16 Personalities and more. . . . We have been given the opportunity to take a couple of these this year and I have been amazingly surprised how accurate they are. I took the Gallup StrengthsFinder and the 16 Personalities tests. Gallup StrengthsFinder The StrengthsFinder Test cost a few dollars to take, but it is well worth it. There are 34 Themes in this test. We signed up for the Top 5 Themes test that shows your 5 themes that define the majority of your personality. My top 5 are: Strategic Activator Self-Assurance Significance Futuristic These are my most dominant themes of the 34 the test shows. These are very important. The program also puts together an Action Plan for you to maximize these strengths. To help show what this means, here are the top 2 of 5: Strategic The Strategic theme enables you to sort through the clutter and find the best route. It is not a skill that can be taught. It is a distinct way of thinking, a special perspective on the world at large. This perspective allows you to see patterns where others simply see complexity. Mindful of these patterns, you play out alternative scenarios, always asking, “What if this happened? Okay, well what if this happened?” This recurring question helps you see around the next corner. There you can evaluate accurately the potential obstacles. Guided by where you see each path leading, you start to make selections. You discard the paths that lead nowhere. You discard the paths that lead straight into resistance. You discard the paths that lead into a fog of confusion. You cull and make selections until you arrive at the chosen path—your strategy. Armed with your strategy, you strike forward. This is your Strategic theme at work: “What if?” Select. Strike. Activator “When can we start?” This is a recurring question in your life. You are impatient for action. You may concede that analysis has its uses or that debate and discussion can occasionally yield some valuable insights, but deep down you know that only action is real. Only action can make things happen. Only action leads to performance. Once a decision is made, you cannot not act. Others may worry that “there are still some things we don’t know,” but this doesn’t seem to slow you. If the decision has been made to go across town, you know that the fastest way to get there is to go . . 16 Personalties When I took the 16 Personalities test, which is FREE, I find I am an ENFJ - The Protagonist. You can learn what each personality is and the characteristics of each. Like the StrengthsFinders test, I found the 16 Personalities test to be pretty accurate. Here are a couple of points from this test that I feel describe me: ENFJs are genuine, caring people who talk the talk and walk the walk, and nothing makes them happier than leading the charge, uniting and motivating their team with infectious enthusiasm. Charismatic – Charm and popularity are qualities ENFJs have in spades. They instinctively know how to capture an audience, and pick up on mood and motivation in ways that allow them to communicate with reason, emotion, passion, restraint – whatever the situation calls for. Talented imitators, ENFJs are able to shift their tone and manner to reflect the needs of the audience, while still maintaining their own voice. Altruistic – Uniting these qualities is ENFJs' unyielding desire to do good in and for their communities, be it in their own home or the global stage. Warm and selfless, ENFJs genuinely believe that if they can just bring people together, they can do a world of good. Natural Leaders – More than seeking authority themselves, ENFJs often end up in leadership roles at the request of others, cheered on by the many admirers of their strong personality and positive vision. Very interesting, and I have to agree they are fairly accurate as well. Essentially both tests say the same things about my personality. If you look at these traits and characteristics of my personality and the things that made me the happiest when I was doing them, you can see why. It is me. It is who I am. What's the point of all of this? It's to understand what Bruce Lee is said, AND it is to understand YOU. If you want to be successful at your career, if you want to live a happy, satisfied, fulfilling life, then you need to be you. You need to be yourself, express yourself and have faith in yourself. Find your calling. If you are in your calling, live it with passion. Find these personality strengths and take the action needed to use them for your life. I have a career now doing what I am. I am a Community Manager for the company I work for. I am a Podcaster, helping people set and achieve their goals. I help people take action and Get The Goals They Set. I am the happiest I've been in a long time doing what I love and what I am. Are You? Take one or many of these tests if you haven't. Be honest when taking them. Find out who you really are and then set your goals to be what you are. If your goals are not in alignment with who you are, then you will have the hardest time achieving them. Your subconscious mind will work to sabotage you. Don't let your mind play goalie for the other team! Go Out Today - Be Yourself, Express Yourself, Have Faith in Yourself. Bruce McQuain from Blackfive joined us once again for Someone You Should Know, our weekly tribute to the troops. Bruce spent 28 years in the U.S. Army and he is a veteran of the Vietnam war. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match. This week Bruce told us about a story you probably remember from the earliest days in Afghanistan, a prison revolt in which CIA agent Johnny Spann lost his life and the world became aware of John Walker Lindh, the wannabe jihadi. As Bruce wrote at Q&O in 2006, "Also there was Special Forces Major Mark E. Mitchell. MAJ Mitchell is the reason the revolt failed. For his action in quelling the revolt and defeating the rearmed Taliban prisoners, MAJ Mitchell was awarded the nation's second highest award for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross" Six years later, Bruce tells us in full, the story of Special Forces Major Mark E. Mitchell The Someone You Should Know radio collaboration began as an extension of Matt Burden’s series at Blackfive. Bruce does an incredible job with the series every week. What is Pundit Review Radio? On Boston’s Talk Station WRKO since 2005, Pundit Review Radio is where the old media meets the new. National Gallery of Australia | Audio Tour | Turner to Monet: the triumph of landscape
The Australian Sketcher of November 1873 shows von Guérard’s grand Kosciusko painting displayed at the Vienna Exhibition with other contributions from the Australian colonies. It and another of the artist’s paintings, Cape Woolamai 1872, are surrounded by photographs and maps, produce, flora and fauna, as well as a case of mineral samples and other specimens of interest.1There is some irony here. Von Guérard detailed the lichen on rocks in North-east view from the northern top of Mount Kosciusko – most noticeably on the platform on which the cloaked figure stands – but other parts are less convincing. When von Guérard arrived in Australia in 1852 he was already an established artist, having trained in Rome and Düsseldorf. He had probably seen works by Friedrich; Carus’s published writings also circulated widely during the 1830s and 1840s, the periods of von Guérard’s study at the Staatliche Kunstakademie. In his new southern homeland the artist familiarised himself with native flora by sketching in the Melbourne Botanical Gardens, exactly the close observation of nature promoted by Carus. Von Guérard’s works are an intriguing mix of topographical accuracy and German traditions of the Sublime: we find a range of protagonists throughout his oeuvre, figures often tiny, seen at an angle or with their backs to the picture plane. As Bruce puts it, von Guérard thus synthesises active, intelligent observation with a ‘predominance of feeling over reasoning’.2 In 1862 von Guérard joined an expedition to the Australian Alps. Led by the Bavarian scientist Georg von Neumayer, the expedition was commissioned by the Government of Victoria, part of an international project to measure the Earth’s magnetic fields. As well as a geophysicist and an artist, the party comprised Neumayer’s assistant, two guides and his dog Hector – all of whom are immortalised in the painting. Von Guérard made a number of sketches during the course of the expedition. In Melbourne the following year he produced North-east view from the northern top of Mount Kosciusko.3It is a major painting, regarded as one of his finest artistically, and most accurate topographically. In North-east view from the northern top of Mount Kosciusko areas of the foreground and the mound of large boulders at right are particularly perplexing. Indeed as Bonyhady tells, the rocks were introduced by von Guérard to emphasise human insignificance. They serve to provide a link between foreground, the distant mountains and the sky, that records the passage from heavy rain to bright sunshine.4Most importantly, in aesthetic terms, the rocks echo those on the peaks at the centre of the composition, gloriously patterned by the snow that has melted to reveal the grassy slopes underneath. Mount Kosciusko, an anglicised spelling, was named by the explorer Count Paul Strzelecki in 1840 after the Polish-Lithuanian general Tadeusz Kociuszko.5 The peak was subsequently discovered to be slightly lower than its neighbour, Mount Townsend – although in order that Mount Kosciuszko retain the distinction of the highest mountain in Australia, the names were reversed. Lucina Ward 1 The Australian Sketcher engraving is reproduced in Candice Bruce, Eugene von Guérard 1811–1901: a German romantic in the Antipodes Martinborough: Alister Taylor, 1982, p. 41; the present whereabouts of Cape Woolamai1872 is not known. 2 Bruce, p. 8. 3 Studies held Mitchell and Dixson collections, State Library of NSW; the canvas is inscribed ‘Mt Kosciusko/ 19 Nov. 1862/ Eug. von Guerard’, the date of the expedition. 4 Tim Bonyhady, Australian colonial paintings in the Australian National Gallery Canberra: Australian National Gallery, 1986, pp. 188–98, 192–3. 5 In 1997 the Geographical Names Board of NSW adopted the spelling ‘Kosciuszko’; Australian pronunciation differs vastly from the Polish.
Tonight we discussed veterans healthcare with a specific focus on traumatic brain injuries. We spent an hour with Bruce McQuain from QandO.net and Annette, a dedicated wife and care giver for Eric, who was severely wounded in Iraq. Bruce spent 28 years in the Army and provided some perspective on the challenges the VA is facing, while Annette told us about the consequences. The unfortunate thing is that her story is not unusual. It tracks perfectly with this editorial from Lawrence Downes of the New York Times, For Wounded Veterans and Their Families, a Journey Without Maps "At a recent hearing in Washington before the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, the men’s families told anguished tales of trips through bureaucratic hell in the transition between the Defense Department and the Department of Veterans Affairs. That terrain is notorious for its paperwork mountains and tripwires of red tape, but especially treacherous for those with traumatic brain injuries, the signature affliction of this five-year-old war. Mr. Bunce lost an eye in a roadside bomb blast that also thrust shrapnel into his frontal lobe. His father, Peter, said his care was so “stovepiped,” with nobody knowing what anyone else was doing, that doctors working on his head ignored his broken leg. Technicians nearly did an M.R.I. on his brain, not realizing — because scans had not been done — the danger from the metal in his skull. Nobody tried to coordinate his many medications. Time and again his parents had to cross the country looking for the right therapies and treatment. Whatever expertise they found they stumbled on; there was no one but them to manage his case. The V.A. relied on the brain-damaged young corporal to evaluate his own mental state, and once sent him a letter threatening to cut off benefits because he could not manage his affairs." Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who has been tremendous IMHO, gets it and is making changes, "FORT BLISS, Texas - U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Thursday said the military had made mistakes in treating returning combat troops including in their physical and mental health care and by providing some sub-standard housing. In a visit to Fort Bliss, Texas, Gates announced a change in government procedures to encourage troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan to seek treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) without fear of losing their security clearances and harming their careers. The announcement came just a day after closing arguments in a San Francisco federal court case in which veterans allege the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is unable to deal with the growing number of PTSD cases emerging from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars." As Bruce mentioned, PTSD and brain injuries are very different things. That said, neither situation is being adequately addressed by the VA, for a variety of reasons. Annette was a very compelling guest, helping us understand the frustrations and consequences of dealing with an overwhelmed system. She is a relentless advocate for her husband Eric. We admire her tenacity to get the best possible care for him. After listening to her describe the challenges, everyone, liberal and conservative, should be saying WE HAVE TO DO BETTER THAN THIS.
