On May 3rd, 1980 Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band started a six week run at number one on the US album chart with 'Against The Wind'. By the time he entered the studio to record 'Against The Wind' in 1979, Bob's decade long run of constant recording and touring had finally paid off. In the spring of 1976 he released 'Live Bullet', his first release with The Silver Bullet Band. It reached the top 40 and went five times platinum in the US. He followed with his ninth studio album, his first with The Silver Bullet Band - 'Night Moves', in October of' '76. Thanks to the hit singles "Main Street", "Rock and Roll Never Forgets" and "Night Moves" the album reached #8 on Billboard and sold six million copies in the US. 1978's 'Stranger In Town' was another huge hit, six times platinum, a #4 placing on Billboard and four more hit singles - "Still The Same", "Hollywood Nights", "We've Got Tonight" and "Old Time Rock & Roll". On April 22nd, 1972 Deep Purple scored their second UK No.1 album with 'Machine Head'. In the US it reached #7. It's often cited as a major influence in the early development of the heavy metal music genre. Commercially, it remains Deep Purple's most successful album thanks to some iconic tracks like "Highway Star", "Space Truckin'" and the song that features the mother of all guitar riffs - "Smoke On The Water".This album is much more than its hit radio singles, however. This is a band at its creative peek. What's most impressive is the songs were written and recorded at a lightning fast pace and in extremely unconventional surroundings. In this episode we'll take you through the band's early history and what led up to the 'Machine Head' album. On Sunday April 16th, 1972 the Electric Light Orchestra made their debut at a small pub in Croydon London called The Fox Hounds. Formed in the autumn of 1970 in Birmingham, England their mission was to pick up where the Beatles song "I Am The Walrus" left off. They wanted to create modern rock and pop songs with classical overtones, combine rock and roll instruments like the electric guitar, bass, guitar and keyboards with classical instruments like the French horn, the the cello and the violin. They also wanted to accomplish what the Fab Four hadn't - take that same music created in the studio and effectively present it in a live setting as well. Lofty dreams that proved to be much more difficult than anticipated. But with a lot of hard work, a bit of trial and error and a determination to make it work the Electric Light Orchestra, later to be known by most as simply ELO would go on to sell over 50 million records worldwide. From 1972 to 1986, the band accumulated 27 top 40 songs on the UK Singles Chart and 15 top 20 songs on the US Billboard Hot 100. On this week in 1977 The Clash released their self titled debut album. It would finally get a US release in July of 1979. It's considered one of the greatest punk rock albums of all time. In a 2017 Billboard article marking the album's 40th anniversary Kennith Partridge wrote, "The self-titled debut album by The Clash is about as punk as it gets. Released April 8th, 1977 in the U.K. and later in America, where CBS execs deemed it too raw for polite consumers, 'The Clash' is a thin and scratchy rapid-fire cataloging of problems big and small. It's about race relations, unemployment, and American cultural imperialism. Also: zit-faced burglars and loners pleasuring themselves with condoms on." We’re celebrating the life and career of AC/DC’s Angus Young, who celebrated a birthday this week. Angus turned 66 years young on Wednesday (March 31st, 1955). On March 23rd, 1983 ZZ Top released their eighth studio album "Eliminator". It remains the band’s most commercially successful album thanks to several singles with an undeniable beat and hook along with three videos that are among the most popular in MTV history. While MTV would launch the careers of new artists, it would revive the careers of veteran bands like ZZ Top. And while MTV helped ZZ Top, the trio of guitarist Billy Gibbons, bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard would return the favor. They were exactly what the network was looking for. They had "a look". The long beards, the sunglasses, the tricked out Eliminator 1933 Ford Coupe, the spinning guitars. They weren’t just a rock band…they were as Classic Rock Magazine’s Paul Rees wrote - otherworldly beings.But as cool as those videos were, they wouldn’t have been much without songs that were just as good…and they were. Inspired by the new wave music heard while on a European tour in the early '80s, ZZ Top infused synthesizers and danceable beats into their already recognizable boogie blues sound. On March 7th, 1970 Simon and Garfunkel’s fifth studio album 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' started a ten week run at number one on the US chart. The title track was in the middle of a six week run at the top of the US singles chart. It would also reach #1 in the UK in March of ’70. It topped the charts in ten countries total. By the time the album had been released, the duo of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel had split up; making this the last Simon & Garfunkel studio album to be released. What a way to go out. Two Grammy awards went to the album with another four for the title track. The album went on to sell in the ballpark of 25 million copies and has since been considered one of the greatest albums of all time. In this episode we’ll get into the story of the making of the album thanks to clips from an amazing documentary from 2011 called "The Harmony Game". On February 12th, 1977 Pink Floyd released their tenth studio album 'Animals' in the US. It had been released on January 21st in the UK. Just five tracks on the record, none released as singles which partly explains why it’s an often overlooked album by the mainstream rock audience.While it may have been overlooked at the time it was released, the appreciation for 'Animals' slowly built in the years following its release and it’s now placed rightfully where it belongs, among the band’s most brilliant works. The band wanted to expand on the commercial success of their previous album, the self-titled record featuring the debut of new members Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. The result was not only Fleetwood Mac’s most successful album but one of the biggest in music history. 'Rumours' became the band's first number one album on the UK albums chart and also topped the US Billboard 200 thanks to four top ten singles. It sold over 10 million copies worldwide within just a month of its release and would go on to win a Grammy for album of the year. On January 30th, 1973 Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss made their very first live appearance as KISS. It was at the Popcorn Club in Queen’s, New York in front of an audience of fewer than ten people. The band was paid 50 dollars for performing two sets that night. The club was renamed Coventry soon after. "Our first show ever was at Coventry," said Paul Stanley. "Coventry was a study in contrasts. The first time we played, there was nobody there. On this week in 1978 Journey released their breakthrough studio album 'Infinity'. After their first three studio albums failed to go gold and barely make the top 100, Journey was about to be dropped from their label. Up against the ropes the band’s manager Herbie Herbert decided it was time to make a change - a big change. That big change came with the addition of a struggling unknown singer Steve Perry who had, himself, given up on his chance of ever making it in music. Bruce Lundvall, who was the President of Journey’s record label, told Herbie that in order for the band to make another record with Perry singing, 'Infinity' would have to sell one million units. The pressure was on. Rudy Childs is a photographer, documentarian and soon to be author. He’s written a book called Riff Raff and Rock And Roll. It is an absolute killer book, one that deserves to be published and turned into a movie. Rudy talks about all the great concerts he saw from a long list of amazing bands, some as they were just starting like Van Halen, Cheap Trick, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers just to name a few. He’s got stories of hitchhiking across country to see shows with some wild characters. He talks about the parking lot fights, the drinking, the drugs, the women, the outdoor parties, getting into a screaming match with Sharon Osbourne, pissing off Joe Walsh in the middle of a concert, witnessing AC/DC’s Bon Scott getting pissed off at concert security which, by the way, he recorded and shared that audio with us. He shared some more rare audio clips of Rudy at shows, of his hilarious uncle Phil getting into with an angry neighbor. You gotta hear the interview to get the story on that one. Plus a wild story that left a bloodied Rudy getting thrown out of an Ace Frehley show. Trust me, you will love this interview. On December 8th, 1976 the Eagles released their fifth studio album 'Hotel California'. It sold a million copies in its first week and went on to top the charts for a total of eight weeks. On December 3rd, 1984 the song "Do They Know It’s Christmas" was released. Recorded by the cream of the British pop world under the name Band Aid it went on to sell over three million copies in the UK, becoming the best selling record ever, and raised over 28 million dollars worldwide for famine relief in Ethiopia. The song was also a major success around the world, reaching number one in thirteen other countries outside the UK. In the US, the single fell short of the top ten in the Billboard Hot 100 but sold an estimated 2.5 million copies by January 1985.We’ll get to the story behind the song from its inception right through to its completion, the b-side and 1985 "One Year On" version of the song. On this week in 1975 Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" started a nine-week run at number one on the UK singles chart. In the US it eventually hit number nine. Freddie Mercury's rock operatic classic became a worldwide hit topping the charts in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and the Netherlands. Quite a feat for a song the band’s record label had little to no interest in releasing as a single. As if the initial success of the single in 1975 and '76 wasn’t enough to prove their doubters wrong, "Bohemian Rhapsody" would become an even bigger hit decades later. After Freddie's death in 1991, the song topped the UK charts for another five weeks. The following year it went back up the US charts reaching a new peak of number two on the Billboard Hot 100 after being used in the film "Wayne's World" in 1992. In 2018, the success of the Queen film 'Bohemian Rhapsody', the song re-entered the Billboard Hot 100, marking three separate decades the song has now charted.That same year, it became the most streamed song from the 20th century, and it’s been downloaded or streamed over 1.6 billion times. We’re going back to the fall of 1982 for the Rush album 'Signals'. Released towards the end of that summer (September 9th, 1982) it climbed the charts and continued to sell through the months of September and October before reaching sales of one million copies on this month in '82. 'Signals' was Rush’s ninth studio album overall and third of the new decade. Before that came the decade opening 'Permanent Waves' from 1980 which hit #4 in the US and sold a million copies. 'Moving Pictures' followed in 1981. It sold three million copies and reached #3 on Billboard. 'Signals' would continue Rush’s run of early 80s commercial success. It peaked at No. 1 in Canada, No. 3 in the United Kingdom, and No. 10 in the United States backed by the band’s highest charting single "Subdivisions" which we’ll get to in this episode along with stories behind the seven other tracks, the album cover art and more. On November 7th, 1975 Elton John started a three week run at number one on the US album chart with his tenth studio album 'Rock Of The Westies'. With 'Captain Fantastic, and the Brown Dirty Cowboy' released just five months earlier, Elton became the first artist ever to debut at number one on the Billboard album chart. Elton was back on top again in the first week of November after replacing Jefferson Starship’s 'Red Octopus' atop the chart. In this episode we’ll get into the nine tracks that made up the original album including the song Elton thought would be a big hit but was never released as a single. On October 15th, 1988 Bon Jovi started a four-week run at number one on the US Album chart with their fourth studio album 'New Jersey'. Bon Jovi was coming off of the multi-million selling 1986 album 'Slippery When Wet' so expectations were high when 'New Jersey' was released on September 19th, 1988. The band lived up to those expectations with another chart topper, another multi-million seller (seven million sold) and an album that still holds the record for having the most top ten hits for any hard rock album with five. But 'New Jersey' is more than just the hits. The album tracks are among the best of the band's career thanks to Jon Bon Jovi and guitarist Richie Sambora who were at the peak of their musical powers by this time. On September 19th, 1969 Creedence Clearwater Revival started a four-week run at number one on the US album chart with 'Green River.' It was one of three albums the band released in just that year alone. The number seven album 'Bayou Country' before it with the number three album 'Willie and the Poorboys' coming after. By the end of 1969, Creedence had three top-10 albums on the Billboard 200, and four top-five singles on the Billboard Hot 100. CCR was everywhere by the summer of 1969 and the bulk of the credit has to go to the band's main songwriter John Fogerty. There’s no arguing that John was a songwriting machine at that point and you'll hear why he was intentionally writing as much as he could with the goal of writing as many hits as he could in this episode. There is also, of course, the well documented battles John had with his bandmates including his brother Tom Fogerty and it all came down to the songs; more specifically who gets credit for the songs and who gets paid for them. This episode all about the classic 1971 Who album 'Who’s Next'. On September 18th of '71 it became the band's first and only UK number one album. It would reach number four in the US. Musician/Producer Christopher Thorn is the guest on this episode of DISCovery. Every rock fan remembers the classic Van Halen video "Hot For Teacher" right? But there's that one question that's persisted ever since that video debuted back in 1984: Just what ever became of Waldo after graduation? Actually, in all seriousness (or as serious as we can get when talking about one of the funniest videos ever), many Van Halen fans have wondered who played the character of Waldo in that video. About ten years ago there was a rumor that began circulating on the internet that it was played by a man by the name of Keith Kessinger. All of this started when Keith posted a video on YouTube for a song he created called "Hot For Waldo". In it, Keith plays a 39-year-old Waldo still living at home with his mom cranking out his own version of the song "Hot For Teacher". Because Keith looked so much like the actual actor who played Waldo in the original video people were sure that they had finally found the real Waldo. Whenever someone asked Keith to confirm it, he neither confirmed nor denied, thus fueling the story. Eventually the websites Wikipedia and IMDB had Keith Kessinger listed as the actor who played Waldo.Well I decided to contact Keith to talk to him about his experience filming the video, what he went on to do afterwards and what he's up to these days. What started out as an interview with the real Waldo quickly turned into something very different. In fact, Keith's appearance on the DISCovery podcast turned into an "official" announcement. He is NOT the real Waldo and his near ten-year silence was his way of fueling what has become somewhat of a rock and roll urban legend. It turns out that Keith is a super nice guy, a super talented musician and a guy who gives a great interview. It was on August 25th of 1975 that the relatively unknown Jersey boy named Bruce Springsteen released his third studio album called 'Born To Run'. Prior to that summer Bruce was relatively unknown by the mainstream and about to be dropped by his record label. But by the end of the summer of 1975, all that would change with 'Born To Run' and by the fall he would find himself on the cover of both Time and Newsweek. But it didn’t come easy. With pressure from his record label to come up with a hit album, Bruce drove both himself and his E Street Band to the brink of a near mental breakdown over several torturous months. On August 9th, 1969 twenty six year old actress Sharon Tate, the pregnant wife of acclaimed movie director Roman Polanski, is found murdered along with four other people at her Los Angeles home. Many view it as the moment that marked the end of the late 60s peace and love era. The following night grocery store owner Leno LaBianca and his wife Rosemary were the next victims of murders. Months later it would be revealed the crimes were committed by members of a cult led by a man named Charles Manson. In the days, weeks and months that would follow it would be revealed that Manson’s motivation was a desire to kick start an apocalyptic race war. It was a race war he called Helter Skelter. And with that, rock and roll music would forever play a part in the story of Charles Manson. Following the sudden and tragic death of guitarist and band leader Duane Allman in 1971, the Allman Brothers Band released 1972’s 'Eat A Peach'. The album was a huge commercial success, peaking at number four on Billboard. Soon after, the band regrouped to begin working on what would be their first album without Duane in the studio. It was a huge void but the band was determined to continue. But, once again, tragedy struck. Bassist Berry Oakley’s life was cut short just as they’d begun recording. By 1979 AC/DC had released a handful of studio albums, toured endlessly and had gained a solid following, especially in Australia, where brothers Malcolm and Angus Young started the band back in 1973. But they still hadn’t achieved the commercial breakthrough they were looking for. That would finally happen with the release of their album 'Highway to Hell'. It was their first LP to break the US Top 100, eventually hitting #17. The album’s title track was a big reason for the album’s success as it went to #47 on Billboard’s Pop Singles Chart. With the Young brothers in their song-writing prime and rock radio thirsting for more AC/DC, the band was primed for even bigger success with their follow-up album. But on February 19th, 1980 just days ahead of their return to the studio, the band’s lead singer Bon Scott was found dead. Soon after a fairly unknown 33-year old singer named Brian Johnson came in to audition for the job and the band released 'Back in Black' on July 25th, 1980. It was an immediate commercial success, debuting at number one on the British albums chart and reaching number four on the American chart. It topped the British chart for two weeks and stayed in the top 10 of the American chart for more than five months. In December of 2019 'Back in Black' reached the 25 million mark in US Sales. The album has also sold one million or more copies in Canada, Germany and France. Worldwide, it went on to sell 50 million copies and is second only to Michael Jackson’s 'Thriller' in total copies sold around the world. Before the April 24th, 1989 release of ‘Full Moon Fever’, Tom Petty was coming off of a pretty rough period in his life both professionally and personally. His last album with the Heartbreakers ‘Let Me Up (I’ve Had Enough)’ didn’t live up to its expectations and his record label wasn’t happy. But that paled in comparison to what Tom had to deal with in the spring of 1987. On May 17th of that year Tom and his family were sitting down to breakfast that morning when they began to smell smoke. Within moments, Petty's Encino, Calif., home was engulfed in flames. He got his wife and 5-year-old daughter out safely, but the fire burned through the house quickly. The only room that survived was his basement studio.The Pettys had lost nearly everything. He lost an estimated $1 million dollars damages. It was devastating but not the last of the bad news. This was no accident. According to a report, an arsonist had drenched the house's back staircase in lighter fluid. But Tom wasn’t ready to give up yet and he had some very loyal and talented friends who would be right by his side, in the studio the whole way. Pretty much every Rolling Stones fan will tell you that their greatest period came between the years 1968 and 1972.
