Alex has the pleasure of interviewing none other than legendary racing pioneer Jim Hall as a preface to his conversation with president of the Motorsports Hall of Fame George Levy, who has just released a fantastic biography of Hall. The trio talk about the tragedy that punctuated Hall's formative years in Colorado; Hall's first incognito race car experience at 19; going to work for Carroll Shelby right out of college; the Maserati Birdcage; the early Hall photography of Bob Jackson, who would shortly become famous for quite another photo; buying a $2,600 war surplus P-51D Mustang over the phone; crash landing said Mustang into a churchyard; the doctrine of "there's always a better way"; Levy's experience interviewing other greats like Stewart, Gurney, and Penske for the book; overcoming telemarketer stigma to get to the good stuff; the most surprising information uncovered during that extensive research; the six important elements of every F1 car that were all introduced by Hall in the '60s; a writing trial by fire at Autoweek; how to order the book; the Motorsports Hall of Fame in Daytona; the Lancia Stratos as the perfect car for the taller man; and the wonders of happenstance. There are plenty of legendary figures from the state of Texas, and fortunately we have on one of them for today's podcast: Lone Star State native and former Ranger Brock Holt. Bradfo is joined by Holt to not only reflect on his hometown team and its recent success, but to also offer a one-of-a-kind tribute to perhaps one of the best postseason pitchers we have seen in some time, Nathan Eovaldi (who texts Holt during the podcast). Episode #101. Rafael Barlowe joins me on the podcast this week. After working in basketball operations for the Texas Legends (the Dallas Mavericks' G League affiliate), Rafael launched Barlowe Basketball, a coaching and player-development operation that led him to becoming a skills trainer for players with the NBA, EuroLeague, EuroCup, Champions League, G League, and the NCAA Division I. As a videographer, he created YouTube mini-documentaries for a few of the NBA players he trained and gained valuable experience working with elite AAU programs like Mo Williams Academy Elite and D1 Basketball that have produced McDonald's All-Americans and first-round NBA draft picks. His combination of skills training and the ability to create video content has afforded him the opportunity to see the world while doing what he loves and what he is passionate about. His video projects have led him to having numerous NBA and NFL players as clients, and his work has been featured on NBA.com, washingtonpost.com, USAToday.com, CBS.com, and NBA TV. He is the host of podcast, NBA Big Board. I loved this conversation so much. I first met Rafael when he came to my high school to recruit students for an internship program called INROADS. After listening to his presentation, I knew I wanted to be a part of this program. That program eventually led me to an internship and then a full-time offer at one of the biggest accounting firms in the world. I am so grateful to Rafael and I am so inspired by his incredible story. After leaving INROADS he went on to pursue his passion, basketball. He has an incredible story of perseverance. I can't wait for you to listen. Connect with Rafael: Website Connect with Lupe: Website Instagram

Driving South from Abilene to San Antonio, TX, the Talegaters encounter The Black Eyed Children and are visited by The Snallygaster! The Black Eyed Children are a relatively recent phenomenon only dating back to 1996. A local journalist named Brian Bethel claimed that children with completely blackened eyes aggressively insisted he let them into his car but needed permission before entering similar to vampires. The sensation he received from these children were described as “a soul-wracking fear.” Ever since, many testimonies and CreepyPastas have sprouted across the internet with similar encounters, some even claiming the children had bird feet. The Snallygaster is not a Texas Legend, but one that began in Fredrick, Maryland. folklorist, Ed Okonowicz wrote the following description: "The creature has been described as having a very long wingspan, claws with sharp talons made of hot glowing metal. A long, pointed beak, and a third red, blazing eye in the middle of its forehead." Though the Snallygaster began making American headlines in the early 1920's, their legend crossed the pond with German immigrants in the early 18th century, continuing in Pennsylvania Dutch communities. The word itself stems from the German term, “Schnellegeister,” meaning “quick ghost.”Sarah Cooper voices Snally Fields, the Snallygaster in this episode. Sarah is the chief curator and founder of The American Snallygaster Museum in Fredrick, MD.
