Live from COP29 – One weird trick to solve our energy problem

As policy changes course in the US, is energy efficiency the key that can unlock a sustainable future? In our latest episode from the COP29 climate talks in Baku, Azerbaijan, host Ed Crooks talks to our guests about the challenges facing the energy transition, including the far-reaching implications of a second Trump administration, as asks whether getting smarter about the ways we use energy can be part of the solution. In the first part of the show, Ed welcomes back Vijay Vaitheeswaran, Global Energy and Climate Innovation Editor at The Economist. He and his team have a couple of big pieces in the latest edition, giving their views on the outlook for the transition in the US and around the world. They are joined by Zach Friedman, Senior Director of Federal Policy at Ceres, which is a US-based group that works with investors and businesses in sustainability issues. The trio discuss how US energy policy is likely to change under the Trump administration and a Republican-controlled Congress. They debate whether innovative mechanisms such carbon tariff for the US that is like the European carbon border adjustment mechanism could help align the administration's economic objectives with climate goals. They highlight some hopeful signs for clean energy development, including the prospect of permitting reform that could expedite infrastructure projects. And they also explore why energy efficiency—a critical yet often overlooked component of the energy transition—could unlock massive cost and emissions savings while paving the way for renewable energy growth. Later in the episode, Ed speaks with Jon Creyts, CEO of RMI, which describes itself as a “think-tank, a do-tank and a scale-tank”. He makes a compelling case for why energy efficiency is the "first fuel" of the transition: the best fuel of all is the fuel you don't need. He argues for the central role of efficiency in reducing emissions, lowering costs, and supporting renewable energy targets. At COP28 in Dubai a year ago, the world agreed a goal of doubling of global energy efficiency improvement rates by 2030. So far it has not made any progress towards that goal. But with innovative approaches such as modular retrofits for housing, Jon illustrates how leadership and vision can dismantle structural barriers, making energy efficiency a linchpin of the low-carbon transition.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Humanity is at a  cross-roads for reducing carbon emissions to secure the climate. At COP28 women played a significant role in bringing greater ambition to the fore. And the international women's movement around climate action is gathering strength with new allies in the Global North and South, and increased advocacy for the interconnections of climate change, human rights, food and water security, biodiversity and demilitarisation. COP28 culminated in an international agreement to ‘transition away from fossil fuels' (‘UAE Consensus'). This was heralded as ‘historic' on the one hand and too weak on the other.Meanwhile, while the conference resolved to ‘drive gender-responsive just transitions, which strengthen all women's and girls' leadership and meaningful participation', of the 133 world leaders who attended the conference, only 15 were women and only 38% of the negotiating teams from participating countries were women. In this event Womens Climate Congress Founder, Dr Janet Salisbury was in conversation with Mamta Borgoyary, Executive Director of She Changes Climate (whose advocacy brought the need for a phase-out of fossil fuels to the fore at COP28); Angelica Mantikas, a youth advocate with the Australian delegation and coordinator of the Oceania Climate Stories project; Tishiko King, a proud Kulkalaig woman from the Torres Straits and Our Islands Our Home campaigner; Sarah Ransom, General Manager, Australian Water PartenershipTogether they will examine the ups and downs of the conference, the outcomes and the next steps for the women's movement.

Our episode today is about one of the most controversial topics at COP28 – abated fossil fuels through carbon capture storage technology. At COP28, COP president Sultan Al Jaber claimed there is no science behind fossil fuel phaseout. At a press conference, IPCC chair Jim Skea said that in 1.5C-compatible scenarios “by 2050, fossil fuel use is greatly reduced and unabated coal use is completely phased out.” He added that oil use by 2050 is reduced by 60% and gas by 45%. According to Jim Skea, Al Jaber was “attentive to the science” and “fully understood it”.Understandably, this has caused some confusion about what abated/unabated fossil fuels.  So, what is abated/unabated fossil fuel and what is the role of CCS and CDR in all of this? Our guests today are Harry Smith and Nem Vaughan.Harry Smith is a PhD Researcher on the climate governance of carbon dioxide removal, and part of the Critical Decade for Climate Change Programme with the Leverhulme Trust at UEA.Dr. Nem Vaughan is an Associate Professor of Climate Change whose research is focussed on carbon dioxide removal and its role in mitigating climate change.Music by Ben Sound

At COP28 was endorsed the concept of “tripling renewables” – all good, but a lot of people forgot to mention the rest of the sentence which is “and doubling of Energy Efficiency”. In the latest IEA report, there is a 400bnUSD Energy Efficiency pie, almost at the level of Oil Upstream, and more than into Grids. Nobody talks about it. Buildings, Industrial, Transport. Electrification, Heat Pumps. So, Laurent and Gerard thought that is was time. There are very few specialist of Energy Efficiency as Jonathan Maxwell. Not only has he authored an extraordinary book called the EDGE, but he also manages Sustainable Development Capital SDCL, a multibillion Energy Efficiency fund. Efficient and decentralised generation of energy (or ‘EDGE') solutions represent the largest, fastest, cheapest, and cleanest source of greenhouse gas emission reductions and energy security. Datacenters, Lighting, Building, Heating, that's the unknown world we are going to dive into. And it is a fast growing sector. Persistent tails winds such as energy security, decarbonisation and costs are powerful drivers for a continuous expansion of that sector. We thank Aquila Capital for supporting our show

Switching to a green pension is the most significant individual thing we can do if we want to fight for a safe and equitable future. We are in a crisis because the use of fossil fuels around the world is driving up carbon emissions and global temperatures. We are trying to keep below a 1.5 degree increase in  warming – yet we are already at 1.2. We need to act at fast!At COP28 nation states committed, for the first time, to a reduction of oil and gas. This is monumental, but as usual we were given no firm timeline or details with the commitment. We need to do everything we can to be a solution to the biggest issue on the planet – and switching to a greener pension is a great place to start. Our esteemed expert guests discuss this in detail so you can make up your mind and make the switch.Host: Jarvis Smith, Co-Founder at My Green Pod https://www.mygreenpod.com/https://www.jarvissmith.com/Guests include: David Hayman, Campaign Director at Make My Money Matterhttps://makemymoneymatter.co.uk/Shipra Gupta, Investments Stewardship Lead at Scottish Widowshttps://adviser.scottishwidows.co.uk/assets/literature/docs/61097.pdfTimi Merriman-Johnson, Founder at Mr Money Jarhttps://www.mrmoneyjar.com/See the Scottish Widows Green Pensions Report by clicking here:  Thanks for listening, and if you would like to contact us send an email to hello@mygreenpod.comSee you soon, Katie and Jarvis xx

The times in the solar industry are very exciting and pretty difficult at the same time: with 413GW annual installations worldwide, the latest edition of BloombergNEF´s 4Q 2023 Global PV Market Outlook points out that solar installations more than doubled in only 2 years. At the same time, with record-low prices for modules, being a manufacturer is becoming increasingly difficult, even though the demand for solar is hug and constantly growing. At COP28, state leaders agreed on tripling the share of renewable energies by 2030. At the same time, solar faces structural difficulties such as grid constraints, labor shortages, price cannibalization, looming trade wars and government regulations that don't keep pace with the industry´s needs in order to accelerate solar deployment. About those astonishing and at the same time controverse developments, we spoke to Jenny Chase. The through line for this episode is the utter panic occurring in the Party as tech, big finance, academia, the deep state, and medical technocrats are forced by God to rhetorically reveal who and what they are. It is fascinating to watch. The President of Harvard, Claudine Gay, is a plagiarist, but she is being allowed to change her work. See, she didn't actually plagiarize; she just forgot to footnote and put quotes around what others have said. She just forgot, on 18% of her work. And, the people who defend her do not have any ability to hear themselves. They are panicking. At COP28, Al Gore demands that internet algorithms be banned as he explains it leads to the feared descent into the rabbit hole. Alex Jones has been reinstated to Twitter, and CNN is terrified. God is forcing them to rhetorically reveal themselves. What does God's Word say? Psalm 37:13-22 13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he knows their day is coming.14 The wicked draw the sword and bend the bowto bring down the poor and needy, to slay those whose ways are upright.15 But their swords will pierce their own hearts, and their bows will be broken.16 Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked;17 for the power of the wicked will be broken, but the Lord upholds the righteous.18 The blameless spend their days under the Lord's care, and their inheritance will endure forever.19 In times of disaster they will not wither; in days of famine they will enjoy plenty.20 But the wicked will perish: Though the Lord's enemies are like the flowers of the field, they will be consumed, they will go up in smoke.21 The wicked borrow and do not repay, but the righteous give generously;22 those the Lord blesses will inherit the land, but those he curses will be destroyed.Episode 1,276 Links:The students at the Harvard Crimson are young, idealistic, and honest enough to write that Claudine Gay committed plagiarism. For effective climate action in Africa to take shape, the African Group of negotiators lead negotiator on finance, Ambassador Mohamed Nasr, told the Africa Climate Conversations that the continent must self-assess and work on its own modalities to achieve climate action. Among the things the continent should work on is creating an Africa-specific platform outlining specific projects and programs for climate action that will collect and present all climate projects from the continent as a package.Nasr says specific projects and programs with clear needs presented to the negotiators will be easily supported “compared to what we have now which is more generic,” he added. At COP28, nations embarked on the Global Stocktake (GST) to assess collective progress towards achieving the long-term goals set under the Paris agreement. The GST is assessing mitigation, adaptation, and means of implementation, considering equity and the best available science as well as loss and damage. With the GST being party-driven, there is a need for the continent to be specific on their needs and strategic to push for that means of implementation critical for climate action nationally and locally.

In this episode of the ESG Insider podcast, we're on the ground at the UN's COP28 climate conference in Dubai covering the role the financial sector plays in addressing climate change.   Finance is a cross-cutting theme on the COP28 agenda, and the week kicked off with a day dedicated to the topic. In today's episode, we sit down on the sidelines of the conference with Dame Susan Rice to talk about what needs to happen to close the climate finance gap.  Dame Susan chairs the Global Steering Group of the Global Ethical Finance Initiative (GEFI), a nonprofit focused on working with the financial sector to deliver finance for the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Dame Susan is former Chief Executive and Chair of Lloyds TSB Scotland and former Managing Director of Lloyds Banking Group, as well as a former Non-Executive Director of the Bank of England.   In the interview, Dame Susan talks about her hopes for COP28 outcomes and what needs to happen to get finance flowing to climate solutions.   "I hear all the time there's a lot of money out there, but it can't actually get to the other side," she tells us.   She says creative, hybrid solutions have a role to play.   "A lot of this change is at the frontier — it's companies, organizations, governments doing changes which haven't been done before," Dame Susan says. "So if you're an investor, if you're a banker, you don't understand the risk, you can't monetize the risk, and you become cautious and don't put the money in. So what I would love to see is really creative but sound, prudent finance."  Listen to more episodes covering COP28:  Optimism, hope for progress palpable at COP28: https://www.spglobal.com/esg/podcasts/tetris-pioneer-turned-environmentalist-talks-climate-optimism-at-cop28   At COP28, solving for water challenges through public-private collaboration: https://www.spglobal.com/esg/podcasts/at-cop28-solving-for-water-challenges-through-public-private-collaboration  As COP28 kicks off, talking climate finance with the Green Climate Fund: https://www.spglobal.com/esg/podcasts/as-cop28-kicks-off-talking-climate-finance-with-the-green-climate-fund    For more information on COP28 developments, see news from S&P Global Commodity Insights here: https://www.spglobal.com/commodityinsights/en/market-insights/topics/cop28-un-climate-change-conference  Read the COP28 Special Edition of the S&P Global Sustainability Quarterly for research and insights on key themes that in focus in Dubai here: https://www.spglobal.com/esg/insights/featured/sustainability-journal/cop28-sustainability-quarterly-page  This piece was published by S&P Global Sustainable1, a part of S&P Global.   Copyright ©2023 by S&P Global  DISCLAIMER  By accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that S&P GLOBAL makes no warranty, guarantee, or representation as to the accuracy or sufficiency of the information featured in this Podcast. Australia's ambitious climate goals: On the Vverge of COP28 As we gear up for COP28, Australia has made notable climate strides that can't go unnoticed. Under Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, the country has set ambitious goals to reduce emissions by 43% by 2030, a significant leap from the previous 28% target. At COP28, Energy Minister Chris Bowen will present a report indicating that Australia is on track for a 37% reduction with existing programs while aiming for 42%. Here are just a few bold steps Australia has taken on climate action: Safeguard mechanism in heavy industry: A groundbreaking policy compels industrial facilities emitting over 100,000 metric tons of CO2e annually to cut emissions. This policy includes mining and oil and gas production facilities, marking a significant step towards reducing emissions.Electric vehicle (EV) strategy: Despite the absence of a new fuel efficiency standard, Australia's EV strategy is promising, focusing on infrastructure and charging access. The federal push is encouraging more EV brands to enter the market, signifying a shift in the supply-demand balance.Rapid adoption of rooftop solar: Australia is the fastest-growing rooftop solar market globally, reflecting the community's strong desire for an energy transition. Policies at federal, state, and council levels support renewable home energy, though affordability remains a challenge. Community's role in climate action The climate policy in Australia is not just top-down; community involvement is pivotal. This week, climate activists organized a protest in Newcastle, arresting 109 people for blocking coal shipping and emphasizing the public's demand for swifter climate action. The protest, including diverse participants like retired coal miners and high school students, underscores a collective push for a just and swift transition away from fossil fuels. Australia's climate action, backed by government policies and community activism, is a beacon of hope. As we witness these developments, it's clear that a sustainable future is not just a vision but can be an achievable reality.

In the heart of Dubai, a city renowned as much for its futuristic skyline as its deep-rooted tradition, the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) unfolds from November 30 to December 12, 2023. This gathering marks a first for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region – a fitting locale for a meeting that is all about firsts, futures, and the forging of a sustainable path forward in our ongoing dialogue with the climate. The theme of COP28, "Accelerating Climate Action for the Sustainable Future," is more than a mere motto; it's a clarion call. As the world converges in Dubai, the air is thick not just with the region's warm breezes but with expectations, aspirations, and the sobering weight of responsibility. This conference isn't just another meeting; it's a pivotal juncture where the future of our planet and the legacy of our generations are at stake. The agenda of COP28 is as diverse as it is crucial:Mitigation: At the forefront is the challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The world has been talking about this for decades; now is the time for escalated action, for turning pledges into reality.Adaptation: It's about helping countries and communities brace for and adapt to the relentless march of climate change. This is not just a problem for future generations; it's a challenge we face here and now.Finance: The issue of mobilizing climate finance is critical, especially for developing countries. Their fight against climate change is often hamstrung by a lack of resources, something the developed world must address.Loss and Damage: This goes beyond adaptation. It's about addressing the irreversible losses and damages wrought by climate change, a reality many face today.Collaboration: Lastly, the conference underscores the need for cooperation among all stakeholders. Governments, businesses, civil society, and indigenous peoples must all pull in the same direction. The expectations for COP28 are high:Ambitious New Commitments: The world is watching for countries to announce new, more ambitious commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.Progress on Adaptation: There is an urgent need for tangible progress on adaptation measures, especially in vulnerable developing countries.Increased Climate Finance: A significant increase in climate finance is imperative. The developing world cannot fight climate change with empty coffers.Stronger Collaboration: COP28 must foster stronger, more effective collaboration among all parties involved.Charles Kuralt, the legendary American journalist, once said, “The everyday kindness of the back roads more than makes up for the acts of greed in the headlines.” At COP28, it's this everyday kindness, this spirit of global camaraderie and cooperation, that needs to come to the fore. In the shimmering heat of Dubai, as the world's representatives gather, there is more than policy and protocol at play. There is hope, a shared vision, and a collective endeavor towards a future that is not only sustainable but also equitable.COP28 in Dubai is not just another conference. It's a testament to our global commitment to the environment, a platform where the world can, and must, come together to avert the worst impacts of climate change. The back roads of individual countries must converge into the highways of collective action. As the world watches, the decisions made and the actions taken in these two weeks will determine the course of our shared future. The time for action is now, the place is here, and the responsibility lies with all of us.This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/6022096/advertisement
