On the Well Woman Show today I interview Danielle Slupesky. Danielle is a certified End of Life Coach and Death Doula. She takes a non-judgmental, heart-centered approach to working with those who are thinking about, preparing for, and near the end of their lives. She offers non-medical, practical, emotional, spiritual and physical support to the dying, as well as to their caregivers and loved ones. Through public education and community engagement her goal is normalize conversations surrounding death, grief and loss. She aims to desterilize and demedicalize death and the dying process. After a near death experience in 2013, Danielle says, "I came back with a mission. I want to bring death back home. Back into the hands and hearts of our families and communities. Death, like birth, need not be a medical event. You've prepared for this journey your entire life. Embark without fear and full of love. We discuss today: No one makes it out of here alive - lets talk about what that means and how it feels to accept this fact. If you knew you were going to die within three months, what would you focus on or do differently? And how we can bring beauty, ritual and ceremony and sacredness to any space - even a heavily medicalized ICU! What does it mean to be a spiritual warrior? How can we find the courage to be authentic, open-hearted and loving to ourselves and others, even when life's chips are down? Welcome back to the Awakening Aphrodite Fast Friday, a snippet of inspiration for the end of your week! Today's discussion is focused on Mark Nepo's work, The Book of Awakening: Having the Life You Want by Being Present to the Life You Have. This episode is a sequel to Episode 169, my first time sharing the words of Mark Nepo on contemplating surrender, resilience & the courage of a seed. Mark Nepo is a philosopher-poet and cancer survivor whose writing offers an escape from the challenges of life in a way that is both profound and clarifying. This spiritual daybook is a summons to reclaim aliveness, liberate the self, take each day one at a time, and savor the beauty offered by life's unfolding. He speaks of spirit and friendship, urging readers to stay vital and in love with this life, no matter the hardships. Encompassing many traditions and voices, Nepo's words offer insight on pain, wonder, and love. “All Spiritual Warriors have a broken heart. This is because it is only through the break, that the wonders and mysteries of life can enter us.” Sharing your kind thoughts & feedback in a review is the ULTIMATE way to support Awakening Aphrodite. What does it mean to surrender? How can we trust the process and not give up, even when it feels impossible? All around us, everything small and buried surrenders to a process that none of the buried parts can see. We call this process seeding and this innate surrender allows everything edible and fragrant to break ground into a life of light that we call Spring. As a seed buried in earth can't imagine itself as an orchid or hyacinth, neither can a heart packed with hurt or a mind filmed over with despair imagine itself loved or at peace. The courage of the seed is that, once cracking, it cracks all the way. To move through the dark into blossom is the work of soul.” Sharing your kind thoughts & feedback in a review is the ULTIMATE way to support Awakening Aphrodite. If we let our imagination run free, what kind of a future do we see 25 years from now? What does the world look like? Does humanity fulfill the aspirations and dreams that inspire the current generation of searchers and activists striving to create a brighter future? There is a growing network of visionaries active today that is pooling their deep passion and expansive experience with a range of social movements to have that same look into the future. Society 2045 is bringing together the intelligence and inspiration to imagine a compelling future vision and the regenerative pathways that can turn powerful ideas into real transformation. The premise is simple: the planet has reached a tipping point in time where all things we can imagine about the future are possible. Instead of surrendering to the dystopian future vision often offered by science fiction, why not create the kind of positive future we would want for humanity? Join Aviv Shahar as he welcomes Jose Leal, Kim Wright, and Stewart Levine, members of Society 2045, as they delve deep into today's topic: Imagine 2045. Let the fear of that darkness allow you to live knowing anything that does not bring you alive is too small for you, and you have made it too small.'” (09:08) (Stewart)“I think it's the convergence that is most radical in my opinion. There are different ideas and new ideas that I hadn't heard before, none of which I feel are all that radical. They're consistent, but different. It's the consistency and the similarity of people's visions. They're always about community, togetherness and breaking down barriers.” (18:39) (Jose)“And if we are interconnected and interdependent, then how do we remain in balance with nature, humanity, all of that? We celebrate that. And if we're doing that, how do we actually have conversations so that we can bring that, because a lot of the rules and structures are meant to keep us separate in the current paradigm. And if we're no longer separate, how do we celebrate the differences and that individuality and authenticity of each person and still live together and take care of the planet?” (24:47) (Kim)“I think the way that I frame what you've just said, Aviv, is human needs drive our behavior with one another. And, the force that we produce in society, the force that we create to compel people to do things, to compel certain structures, to compel the type of organizations that we have, it's a breakdown of force as soon as our ability to wield our needs grows.” (35:19) (Stewart)“Putting the relationships at the core and the success of the relationships as our goal and not what some third party twenty years from now is gonna look back and say should have happened. It's more about our choice making and our authenticity.” (46:10) (Kim)“I think, for me, the evolution from being myopic about the things that I'm working on to whatever the term is in being able to describe the opposite, is I've been growing to see a bigger picture of the emergence of things. And that, what I've been working on - the emerging things that I've been working on - are happening for the same reasons that other people are doing it .” (1:00:10) (Jose)“I don't want to be the guru. #WisdomWednesdays: How to Stop Putting People on a Pedestal and Comparing Yourself with Others If you're like most people, you probably begin comparing yourself with others at the sight of greener pastures. However, what others choose to show us often does not include their struggles and flaws. In addition, everyone has a unique life path. Thus, it's best to refrain from putting others on pedestals. Instead, look inwards. Ask yourself — how can you bring joy into your life? Can you be the sun in someone else's? In this episode, Rosie and Tessa discuss the pitfalls of putting others on a pedestal and comparing yourself with others. They also touch on our humanness, making mistakes, and how everyone can change if we allow them to do so. Rosie also talks about choosing value-adding friendships and shares a personal experience about setting boundaries. Tune in to discover simple ways to be more in tune with yourself and combat the lack mentality! Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Understand why you shouldn't put people on a pedestal and stop comparing yourself with others. Discover the need to look beyond people's mistakes and allow them to change. Know the importance of choosing what kind of friendships to keep in your life. Episode Highlights Why We Shouldn't Put Other People on a Pedestal We're all humans who make mistakes. So, putting others on a pedestal only sets you up for disappointment. We're all flawed, but we tend to hide those parts of ourselves from the world. Instead, we only show our highlight reels. Instead of comparing yourself with others, you can direct your energy and attention inward, toward things that bring you joy. More often than not, we admire people not because they have something that we don't, but because they live more freely than us. Looking at someone carrying out their purpose can either spur us into action or make us feel defeated. How to Stop Comparing Yourself with Others We need to pause and consider that other people's lives are their own. We never know what someone else is going through. So, the best we can do is wish them well on their journey. Also, recognize that you have a lot to be grateful for in your life. Doing so can help distance yourself from a ‘lack' mentality. Ask yourself, what are the things you've done that make you feel proud? Acting on Inspiration It's not entirely wrong to put others on a pedestal because these people can inspire us to excel. The issue comes with being addicted to the inspiration and not doing anything in return. We have to create an outlet for this inspiration, or it becomes corrosive. Looking Beyond Mistakes People make mistakes. What's important is how we process and learn from them. Sometimes, it's difficult to own up to our own mistakes due to fear of rejection. We must give ourselves and others room to make mistakes and learn from them. People can change, and we should give them that space to grow. If people are acting out, it's often because they come from a place of pain. On Friendships There are three types of friends—high maintenance, low maintenance, and no maintenance. There is a correct balance of friends for you. You can only give and take so much. Keep friendships that are value-adding to your life. It's okay to let go of friends. Asymmetrical relationships can be harmful to both of you. The key to navigating friendships is clear boundaries. Listen to the full episode to hear Rosie's story about a person who wanted to be friends with her. Final Thoughts To become better friends, we can reflect on this question: How do we show up as the sun in other people's lives? It is essential to cultivate your sense of self through meditation or alone time. Through mindfulness, you can know yourself instead of focusing your attention on how people perceive you. Knowing who you truly are can help you navigate life without being clouded by others' judgments. 5 Powerful Quotes [04:36] “Instead of comparing somebody else's outsides to our insides, we can reflect and put our attention and energy into the things that make us happy and bring us joy.” [11:33] “If we are just beings that want to consume inspiration and never do something in return, it's going to eventually create a void.” [22:18] “Somebody that maybe you admire or that you see that might have this outwardly wonderful-looking life could be going through a lot. So I always say, don't put people on pedestals.” [37:01] “It's time to release that relationship out into the world because it's not serving you. And I do believe that you outgrow people.” [41:52] “Without mindfulness, you will always be constructing your sense of self based on others' perceptions.” This episode is brought to you by Thrive Causemetics Get 15% OFF your first order thrivecausemetics.com/loved This episode is brought to you by FAHERTY Go to www.fahertybrand.com Use Code: LOVED for 20% OFF This episode brought to you by ReadySlim Tea www.readyslim.com/loved To save 25% off your first order of Ready Slim's 28 Day Detox Tea Kit plus a FREE collapsable water bottle. When you’re riding the roller coaster of life, there are inevitable twists and turns. Riding those bends can often feel stressful, anxious, and sometimes even empty. As I have been doing most mornings, I woke up today and practiced my daily routine of reading a passage from Mark Nepo’s book, The Book of Awakening. The passage landed deeply in the midst of the twists and turns life has recently thrown my way as I help to care for ill and aging parents. I’m exhausted. And I’ve come to realize I’ve slipped back into my old habits. I’m not taking my own ‘Soulbbatical medicine’ in the midst of a family crisis. It’s critical to take the time to pause and check-in with ourselves, even more so in times of anxiety, stress, and overwhelm. It’s time for us to rebel for radical self-commitment. In this episode, I discuss the importance of rebelling FOR self-commitment, what it means, and how it’s different from (and bigger than) self-care. In fact, it’s an umbrella concept that encompasses self-care and invites us to take that commitment a few steps deeper in our lives. I share an excerpt from Mark Nepo’s The Book of Awakening and discuss what it made me realize about how I’ve been taking care of myself (or not) amidst a recent family crisis. I underscore the essence of evaluating the things that truly matter to us and describe the art of giving the “Gracious No.” I also enumerate some simple, powerful tools for how we can practice and think about radical self-commitment and highlight how extraordinary achievements are really just a series of tiny steps. “This idea of radical self-commitment is bigger than self-care. It is an awareness of what we need in any given moment.”- Shelley Paxton This week on Rebel Souls: The importance of taking the time to be refreshed and renewed What our “surge capacity” is and how it helps us cope with stressful situations The good and the bad of working from home Rebelling FOR radical self-commitment The difference between self-care and radical self-commitment Why you need to think about the values you live for Why it’s important to commit to our boundaries Thinking about your “10s” (Mark Silverman’s concept from the book Only 10s 2.0) and why it’s essential to spend our time and energy on things that matter the most What it means to have courageous conversations and how to offer the “gracious no” Why we should check-in on ourselves more than once a day What it looks like to heighten our own awareness of how we’re feeling mentally, physically, and emotionally – and what we need in support of those feelings The next important step to take after checking-in on ourselves The three ‘P’ tool to practicing radical self-commitment The power of giving yourself permission to slow down, breathe, and check-in The impact of rebelling for radical self-commitment Resources Mentioned: Your ‘Surge Capacity’ is Depleted - It’s Why You Feel Awful by Tara Haelle on Medium The Book of Awakening: Having the Life You Want by Being Present to the Life You Have by Mark Nepo Related Content: Addison Brasil Rebelling FOR Mental Health Rebelling FOR The Big Rocks Book: Soulbbatical: A Corporate Rebel’s Guide to Finding Your Best Life Join us every Friday at 8am PT / 10am CT for our weekly Clubhouse chat - Soul Success: Your Truth is Your Superpower - Hosted by Christina Glickman and Shelley Paxton Liberate Your Soul & Join the Rebelution Thanks for tuning into this week’s episode of Rebel Souls with your host, Shelley Paxton, the podcast dedicated to helping leaders reject the status quo, liberate their soul, and become a lifelong rebel. Episode Highlights Mike’s Story Mike turned his life around by refusing to be chained by the environment he grew up in and becoming a victor of circumstance. Although the pandemic is exceptionally challenging, Mike admits that he went through harder moments in the past. Mike started rewriting his book during COVID-19. Later on, he decided to dedicate it to the lost and lonely. Sometimes, the things we create are what we and others need to hear. Slowing Down, Being Grateful While rewriting the book, Mike made sure to add stories of how people are working through the current crisis. Mike has to remind himself every now and then to be grateful for the success he enjoys today. He admits it’s been like a trip beyond his wildest dreams, from writing bestsellers to speaking for large audiences. Despite being in the limelight for two and half years, Mike still struggles to balance taking ownership of his success and being humble. Understanding the F.O.R.C.E. Mike developed a coaching formula for anyone who feels lost or disconnected using the cognitive behavioral therapy framework. The F.O.R.C.E is an acronym that stands for five cognitive distortions. F represents fortune-telling, O for overgeneralizing, R for rigid thinking, C for confused purpose, and E for emotional reasoning. The solution to these cognitive distortions can be found in the same acronym. Fact-finding is the antidote to fortune-telling, objective thinking to overgeneralizing, relaxation to rigid thinking, clarified purpose to confused purpose, and evidence-based thinking to emotional reasoning. Before making a decision, make sure to check the filter you’re using to assess the situation. If it falls under the five cognitive distortions, use the corresponding acronym to break out of that mental loop. On Coaching Mike believes that a sense of community is an essential component in inspiring change. It’s more challenging to create and maintain that connection during the pandemic. For Mike, the first step to change is to be fully honest with yourself. In the end, we’re all coaches and experts in life. However, the moment you think you have all the answers is when you stop becoming a coach. The Right Coach Mike cautions against coaches who sell easy and quick fixes. Coming from a clinical background, Mike suggests that it’s unethical to sell something to someone trying their best to recover from trauma. There’s a big difference between a coach speaking to help and one speaking to sell. According to Mike, it’s best to let people be vulnerable rather than inviting them to expensive therapies. You have internal resources that you can always draw on to improve yourself. If you can’t afford to get professional help, several communities offer free assistance. Being Honest with Yourself As long as you’re not hurting anyone, there’s no wrong intention or motivation. Having worked in TV and show business, Mike discovered that most people rarely want to change others' lives. What you’re saying to others has to be congruent with your inner truth. Be honest and lean into what you want to do. As long as you’re true to yourself, people will support you. Whatever you’re doing has to fit into your long-term vision and be aligned with your values. Live with Purpose If you ever have to choose between becoming well-known or helping other people, know that the former feels empty and the latter more meaningful. Whenever you have to make a similar decision, take a step back and clarify your purpose. Why do you do what you do, and why do you love what you love? This wisdom can apply in even the most mundane circumstance. If you feel out of place at an event, revisit why you came in the first place. Often, you’ll discover that it’s not about you. With clarity, it becomes easier to live with purpose and make decisions from that place of discernment. For Mike, to live with purpose feels like being wrapped in a giant hug. He admits it feels much better than being in the New York Times bestselling authors list. Radically Loved Mike feels radically loved when he’s with someone who accepts him perfectly and unconditionally. He recalls a time during prayer when he heard a voice that asked him to satisfy his hunger first. The spiritual is not limited to the divine and the sacred but can be something as simple as taking care of your needs or taking a deep breath. 5 Powerful Quotes from this Episode [15:08] “So before making a decision, especially decisions that are creating a lot of anxiety or fear, it's really good to check our filter. That's kind of the filtering system where it helps people get out of that cognitive loop of the same fear just coming up every day and into kind of the facts of life.” [22:23] “We're all in this together. I think as soon as a coach becomes uncoachable or has all the answers, it's a dead-end street.” [29:44] “We're all artists. And it's just when you're continually pushing yourself to just be great in your art, the universe connects you with other art, and you get to play and have fun.” [47:41] “Clarifying our purpose each day matters, and making a decision to do that matters. It creates this amazing spiritual experience, or whatever someone believes, where we're like, ‘I belong here.’” [50:31] “I was very successful before I became a New York Times bestselling author. It didn't make me any more successful like it didn't give me a giant hug. What gives me a giant hug is being purposeful in my life.” About Mike Mike Bayer is a personal development coach and New York Times bestselling author who has made it his life mission to help people be their best selves. We also discuss how to discern from a place of wisdom and become aware of our ego. If you want to learn useful insights to help you face the year ahead, tune in to the full episode. Recognize the importance of becoming aware of your ego and owning up to uncomfortable feelings. Don’t forget to give yourself a present this year, too. Rosie’s gift to herself is disconnecting from technology. Tess recalls fond childhood memories of Christmas and reflects how she can recreate that atmosphere this year. Meditative Practices For Rosie, painting by the numbers is a meditative practice. On her part, Tess slips into meditation by writing poetry and knitting. A passage from Mark Nepo’s book highlights the significance of remembering and forgetting, emphasizing the importance of stillness and surrender. Tess’ Biggest Lessons Tess realized that instead of running around and trying her hardest to tick her to-do-lists, sitting still was more productive. Even though she doesn’t chase after opportunities, they come her way regardless. Tess also discovered that she didn’t like sharing her food. Tess continues to explore different eating modalities as she learns more about her body. Rosie’s Biggest Lessons On her part, Rosie discovered that she could work from home effectively by creating a schedule and sticking to it. Second, she learned that you can still make mistakes even if you’re working on improving yourself. Instead of ignoring her flaws, she is slowly learning to accept them. Any sort of change and transformation is highly uncomfortable. Even as Rosie tries her best to get pregnant, she is still probing the motivations behind her desire to be a mother. She’s learning to surrender her attachment to what she believes her life ought to be. Catching Yourself Your mental state affects your ability to practice mindfulness, and falling victim to that reactionary impulse. There are three voices in your head. The first is impulsive, the second voice calls for restraint, and the third is the voice of wisdom. For Rosie, it’s not a matter of right or wrong but learning to observe the situation from a place of discernment. Since we are egocentric beings, it can be hard to find and listen to that third voice. Rosie admits that she occasionally catches herself listening to the first and second voices. However, she knows what to do to pull herself out of a negative spiral. Taming The Ego Your ego is the primary source of your emotional upheaval. Learn to discern when it’s the right time to speak up and use your voice. Your emotional distress may not be evident to your partner. Find a healthy way to express that energy. Otherwise, those feelings will fester and affect your relationship. Although becoming aware of your ego can be uncomfortable, it is also a humbling experience. 5 Powerful Quotes [TESS] 16:46 “I realized that all the things that I was running around doing, kind of the frenetic to-do list wasn't as necessary as I thought it was. As I stopped driving back and forth in town like a ping pong ball and sat a little bit more still and just, you know, stayed home more, I realized that was enough.” [TESS]17:33 “I do believe that the universe is on my side. And that if there's something that I need to come to me, it will. So that's one thing that 2020 has taught me.” [ROSIE] 23:17 “By no way do I have things figured out. And I often see my defects of character. And I always strive to work on the things that aren't serving my highest good, but I learned to actually accept that this year as opposed to just bypassing it.” [ROSIE] 29:24 “So it's not a choice of doing what's right or doing what's wrong. It's really a matter of how can you observe the situation from a wise place, from a place of wisdom and truly a place of discerning.” [ROSIE] 33:35 “That energy needs to be expressed one way or another. Our emotions need to be fully realized in order for them to have a complete cycle, or they're going to live inside your body.” About Tess Tessa Tovar is a yoga instructor with over 500 hours of Yoga Teacher Training through 5-Star Yoga Alliance Rated YogaWorks Programs. In this episode we tap into the wisdom of New York Times Bestselling Author, Mark Nepo and his groundbreaking book: The Book of Awakening: Having the Life You Want by Being Present to the Life You Have Enjoy by reading the section: "More Power to You". He provides small doses of what really matters, simple truths, and stories for our everyday life. Spiritual Bypassing is part of entering into spiritual truth with yourself. As humans, we generally want to avoid pain and anxiety. It's hard-wired into us. So when faced with promises of a better way, a way free of strife, and it looks as virtuous as most spiritual quick fixes claim to be, most of us go there at least some of the time. But the danger is in existing there. Pain and sorrow serve a purpose and bring us lessons and messages about our personal journey. They are the True "fast" path (which may last your lifetime) to finding what lives in our core- personal love, integrity and light- and strengthen us to face a myriad of everyday challenges and find meaning for our existence. In this episode, I reference a personal short poem and the concepts of Robert Augustus Masters from his book Spiritual Bypassing: When Spirituality Disconnects us from What Really Matters Published 2010 by North Atlantic Books. I also include a short excerpt from a reading of Mark Nepo (less than 10% of the overall reading for copyright reasons) from The Book of Awakening: Having the Life You Want by Being Present to the Life You Have . So I'm not afraid of them. I sit in the fire and take the ride with them, knowing that if I don't resist them, on the other side is wisdom, is a lesson. Thoughts on Breathing I like to imagine I'm making love with the universe. I'm having sex all day long. The mindfulness breath practice is making love to the universe so I, with my inhale, allow myself to be penetrated by the universe and feel how delicious and tantalizing that is on the inhale and then I give the universe my essence. I penetrate the universe with me as I exhale and I just feel my posture changing and I smile from the inside out. Suggested Resources Book: The Book of Awakening: Having the Life You Want By Being Present To The Life You Have by Mark Nepo App: Insight Timer Bullying Story All the bullies are deeply inside. They've been wounding that little you, internally. They've been bullied on the outside so there's no place safe to go in or out and then they just react. If you can get them to be present & mindful and let them feel seen and heard. You don't have to agree that it's ok to hit Joey, but you can acknowledge and validate your stand from their point of view. They have every right to feel that way and you get it. You're not here to fix them, just to get them. Something really deep happens inside. You exhale all the way to that safe place that we've all been looking for. On the outside, seeking, seeking we can find it on the inside. My bullying story is, I was a people pleaser growing up. My dad was drunk and stoned and I just wanted to make sure I didn't get in trouble so I grew up as a young woman not speaking my truth. I attracted my dad to heal my wounds. So he was a bully; my son's father. I just put up with everything, just so that he wouldn't yell and scream at me. That was his way of controlling me and my way of letting myself be controlled. We got a divorce within one year when I discovered he was not who I thought he was. I took total ownership that when I chose to marry him, my mom was dying and I wasn't very mature or enlightened and I just wanted a checkbook, pulse, sperm. I just wanted to replace the relationship that I was losing. I know that's not very kind or enlightened, but that was the best I could do at the time, feeling so sad. So within a year, I didnt' chose somebody great, but I have a great son. As time went on, he just wouldn't stop fighting with me. I guess from his point of view, you said forever. And I stopped after a year. To him, his point of view must have been humiliation and rejection. So his anger and his bullying came after me and of course I'm just triggering his mother or his past. Our son said, I want to kill myself at nine years old. I can't handle the fighting that non-stop happens with you and dad. I had done every non-violent communication course. Every therapist, every counseller, everything you could think of. Until I realized, wait a minute, he doesn't want to get along with me. He loves to fight. So I let my son live with his dad primarily for six months, just to see. Let him win. Let him look good. Let him be father of the year. I'll sacrifice my time to save my son. But he took it and he used it against me to say that I was a flakey, unstable mom and that I had abandoned him. And he won after almost five years in court of trying to fight for the truth. I'm unconventional. I'm an entrepreneur. I don't have a PHd, but I coach people and I talk about sex. So he painted this horrible picture with this old school, archaic family law and jury system and he won seventy percent custody and I got thirty. He humiliated my career. The bullying never stopped. My mindfulness practice, even up to this very day. Right now he's convinced my son that I'm horrible and selfish and so my son's living with him and has blocked my from the phone and I have no contact with my son. I'm literally in the midst of a bullyng moment. But this becomes our mindfulness practice. How can I still have compassion, not condoning, but have compassion for why he's behaving that way. Because I believe that bullying is ultimately a reflection of the inside. Where is my unloved part of me? Where can I love myself more? Where can I be more in allowance and look past the anger coming at me to the wounded heart, to the cry for love? Everything's ultimately a cry for love so I'm doing my inner work to take responsibility that I didn't marry him for a deep commitment and love. I was scared and really own that and apologize so that I don't get emotionally triggered by his behavior and i just be that grounded, present, mindful person that allows this whole lesson to unfold and keep growing and not be that bitter ex-wife bitch who blames. That's not going to get us anywhere nor teach my son any good lessons either.
