Episode73: Loving the Life You Have with Nina Powell Explicit Today my special guest is Nina Powell. Purposed with infectious inspiration, Nina is the founder of the Wild, Divine, Orgasmic Leadership Movement. Nina is sharing her liberation with the world's most impeccable women through individual and group experiences and retreats. Her clients, the bravest of women; enjoy amazing connections to their body, feel exquisite levels of self-expression, and step into their power like nobody's business. These women access their true inner goddess, magnetize their desires, and hold a divine magnetism that brings them an impenetrable inner joy and peace."When my inner world transformed I realised much of my thinking of this or that not being right was my nervous system being bound up with the past. It was causing me to want to run. Fight, flight or freeze are the only solutions that our ancient brain structures have.Truth can only come once we've transformed our inner world and reclaimed our life force. Then we find that it's possible to both create an amazing life AND enjoy it!"Our conversation today went in many directions but at the heart of it, we discussed not just creating the life you want but actually loving the life you have as the catalyst for change. When we love being ourselves and love our life even when it isn't exactly how we want it, we start to create the very life we desire. When we learn to enjoy each moment and bring pleasure into our lives, we start to notice and experience things we never noticed before. When we get out of our heads and into our bodies we start to feel and experience life at a different level.Life becomes a new adventure that we can embark on with curiousity. We can experience joy in the little things that we would never have noticed before. Pleasure is a birthright but we have been taught that it is irresponsible or an extra in life, however, without pleasure, life becomes mundane and difficult. We are built to enjoy pleasure, sensation, and joy but our society and all of it's rules have shut us down from the experience of truly living! If you would like to get in contact with Nina Powell, you can use the link below:WebsiteLove, Karine Take the Free Quiz, Is Monogamy Right for Me? and finally get that question answered! On the Well Woman Show today I interview Danielle Slupesky. Danielle is a certified End of Life Coach and Death Doula. She takes a non-judgmental, heart-centered approach to working with those who are thinking about, preparing for, and near the end of their lives. She offers non-medical, practical, emotional, spiritual and physical support to the dying, as well as to their caregivers and loved ones. Through public education and community engagement her goal is normalize conversations surrounding death, grief and loss. She aims to desterilize and demedicalize death and the dying process. After a near death experience in 2013, Danielle says, "I came back with a mission. I want to bring death back home. Back into the hands and hearts of our families and communities. Death, like birth, need not be a medical event. You've prepared for this journey your entire life. Embark without fear and full of love. We discuss today: No one makes it out of here alive - lets talk about what that means and how it feels to accept this fact. If you knew you were going to die within three months, what would you focus on or do differently? And how we can bring beauty, ritual and ceremony and sacredness to any space - even a heavily medicalized ICU! What does it mean to be a spiritual warrior? How can we find the courage to be authentic, open-hearted and loving to ourselves and others, even when life's chips are down? Welcome back to the Awakening Aphrodite Fast Friday, a snippet of inspiration for the end of your week! Today's discussion is focused on Mark Nepo's work, The Book of Awakening: Having the Life You Want by Being Present to the Life You Have. This episode is a sequel to Episode 169, my first time sharing the words of Mark Nepo on contemplating surrender, resilience & the courage of a seed. Mark Nepo is a philosopher-poet and cancer survivor whose writing offers an escape from the challenges of life in a way that is both profound and clarifying. What does it mean to surrender? How can we trust the process and not give up, even when it feels impossible? Welcome back to the Awakening Aphrodite Fast Friday, a snippet of inspiration for the end of your week! In today's discussion, I will be reading from Mark Nepo's work, The Book of Awakening: Having the Life You Want by Being Present to the Life You Have. This spiritual daybook is a summons to reclaim aliveness, liberate the self, take each day one at a time, and savor the beauty offered by life's unfolding. Encompassing many traditions and voices, Nepo's words offer insight on pain, wonder, and love. “In nature, we are quietly offered countless models of how to give ourselves over to what appears dark and hopeless, but which ultimately is an awakening beyond our imagining. All around us, everything small and buried surrenders to a process that none of the buried parts can see. We call this process seeding and this innate surrender allows everything edible and fragrant to break ground into a life of light that we call Spring. As a seed buried in earth can't imagine itself as an orchid or hyacinth, neither can a heart packed with hurt or a mind filmed over with despair imagine itself loved or at peace. The courage of the seed is that, once cracking, it cracks all the way. To move through the dark into blossom is the work of soul.” Sharing your kind thoughts & feedback in a review is the ULTIMATE way to support Awakening Aphrodite. Anxiety is my topic today and I have entitled the episode, Squash Anxiety. Anxiety is a huge topic; it's even more of an issue than it used to be. I think with COVID, the world situation, and all the challenges we've been dealing with for the last few months, anxiety is on the rise. When it comes to anxiety, it's important to monitor ourselves and notice whether or not we're feeling more anxiety. If so, what can we do about it? Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify Anxiety Defined Anxiety is our body's normal reaction to stress. When we're presented with danger or potential danger, our bodies respond to that stress. That is similar to how our body responds to fear. Fear is the body's response to a real or perceived imminent threat and anxiety is our body and our mind anticipating that future threat. So in knowing that, you need to think about whether this is an actual threat or simply a perceived threat? There is a big difference. So, the first thing to ask yourself is this; am I safe in this particular moment in time? In this particular instant, am I okay? If you can answer yes to that. Then hopefully you will feel a certain amount of relief right then and there. You may be able to identify what the perceived imminent threat is that you're experiencing. If so, you can go about, in a very rational way, assessing that situation. What are my possible choices? What can I do and how many of the thoughts that I'm thinking are actually irrational? Your mind will assume that many of these perceived threats are actually more serious than they truly are. And that in itself can lead us to be more anxious than we really need to be. The truth is, we all experience anxiety. Knowing that we can think of practical ways to deal with that anxiety. Just the fact that you're listening to this podcast on the topic of mindfulness tells me that you suspect or maybe you know that mindfulness is a way that you can deal with this issue. How Can We Squash Anxiety? Research shows that approximately 19% of adults in the United States struggle with anxiety every second single day. However, the research is not telling us how many people have dealt with anxiety by using meditation or mindfulness. By using mindfulness strategies, you can actually become stronger and more capable of leading a happy, successful life that does not include overwhelming anxiety. Certain situations in life are probably going to cause you to feel anxiety no matter what you do. If you're waiting for results from a doctor, driving in terrible weather, or starting a new job, any of these kinds of situations will certainly cause most of us to feel anxiety. That is a completely normal reaction to those types of events, and your emotions are working the way they are intended to operate. Meditation, exercise, hobbies, changing life circumstances, and spending more time in nature can help lessen anxiety. If we let our imagination run free, what kind of a future do we see 25 years from now? What does the world look like? Does humanity fulfill the aspirations and dreams that inspire the current generation of searchers and activists striving to create a brighter future? There is a growing network of visionaries active today that is pooling their deep passion and expansive experience with a range of social movements to have that same look into the future. Society 2045 is bringing together the intelligence and inspiration to imagine a compelling future vision and the regenerative pathways that can turn powerful ideas into real transformation. The premise is simple: the planet has reached a tipping point in time where all things we can imagine about the future are possible. Instead of surrendering to the dystopian future vision often offered by science fiction, why not create the kind of positive future we would want for humanity? Join Aviv Shahar as he welcomes Jose Leal, Kim Wright, and Stewart Levine, members of Society 2045, as they delve deep into today's topic: Imagine 2045. Let the fear of that darkness allow you to live knowing anything that does not bring you alive is too small for you, and you have made it too small.'” (09:08) (Stewart)“I think it's the convergence that is most radical in my opinion. There are different ideas and new ideas that I hadn't heard before, none of which I feel are all that radical. They're consistent, but different. It's the consistency and the similarity of people's visions. They're always about community, togetherness and breaking down barriers.” (18:39) (Jose)“And if we are interconnected and interdependent, then how do we remain in balance with nature, humanity, all of that? We celebrate that. And if we're doing that, how do we actually have conversations so that we can bring that, because a lot of the rules and structures are meant to keep us separate in the current paradigm. And if we're no longer separate, how do we celebrate the differences and that individuality and authenticity of each person and still live together and take care of the planet?” (24:47) (Kim)“I think the way that I frame what you've just said, Aviv, is human needs drive our behavior with one another. And, the force that we produce in society, the force that we create to compel people to do things, to compel certain structures, to compel the type of organizations that we have, it's a breakdown of force as soon as our ability to wield our needs grows.” (35:19) (Stewart)“Putting the relationships at the core and the success of the relationships as our goal and not what some third party twenty years from now is gonna look back and say should have happened. It's more about our choice making and our authenticity.” (46:10) (Kim)“I think, for me, the evolution from being myopic about the things that I'm working on to whatever the term is in being able to describe the opposite, is I've been growing to see a bigger picture of the emergence of things. And that, what I've been working on - the emerging things that I've been working on - are happening for the same reasons that other people are doing it .” (1:00:10) (Jose)“I don't want to be the guru. I want to be the congregator of the ideas around law.” (1:08:18) (Kim) RESOURCES MENTIONED Portals of Perception WebsiteAviv's LinkedIn Aviv's TwitterAviv's WebsiteSociety 2045Books Mentioned:The Book of Awakening: Having the Life You Want by Being Present to the Life You Have:

Today I have the absolute pleasure of sharing my conversation with Bible teacher and author Elizabeth Woodson. Elizabeth is a beam of sunshine and hope, and the light of Christ just radiates from her smile and her passion for people knowing and loving Jesus. She shares with me her journey into full time ministry, first on various church staffs such as leading singles ministry at Dr. Tony Evans' church and then was most recently on staff at Village Church, teaching, equipping leaders, and doing theological equipping with the body,, and now she is pursuing her full time personal ministry. She is passionate about deep theology for every day folks because life is hard and God's word is a lamp to our feet in every dark, foreign or uncertain land. Her first book just recently released, and speaks directly into that space. It's called Embrace Your Life: How to Find Joy When the Life You Have is Not What You Hoped For. Elizabeth shares so powerfully about practically walking out longing and lament in your life, and still experiencing the gift of joy and an abundant life. Her beautiful book looks into the Word of God about how to take our longing before the Lord and to work it out with Him, and then figure out the next step even when we don't know what to do or how to feel. She offers some practical ways to process this in this conversation and it's just so insightful and full of experiential wisdom and Spirit led truth. We cover so much ground in this episode. We talk about how to better love our single friends in the church, encouragement for pursuing mentorship and discipleship within the body of Christ, and also for those who are not currently part of a church, why it matters to have right theology, and to know who God truly is, and so much more. This word is a powerful one that carries the need for the salvation of Easter and the lament and longing of the Lord's second coming because it is a hot. mess. down. here. But there is joy in the longing. There is beauty to be found in the middle of the story and I cannot wait for you to hear it. I'd love to hear if this episode resonated with you! It means so much to me and to our guests when you share this podcast with the people in your life or to hear how the Lord is intersecting your story. Don't forget, friend. No matter where you are, you matter. Your story matters. “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Today's episode sponsor: Tony Crabtree Homes with Exit Realty Home buyer guide: http://bit.ly/buyersguidecrabtreehomes Seller guide: http://bit.ly/sellerguidecrabtreehomes Facebook Instagram Website YouTube Connecting with Elizabeth: Book: Embrace Your Life: How to Find Joy When the Life You Have is Not What You Hoped For Instagram Twitter Website References: Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS) Dr. Tony Evans and his church Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship Village Church Growing Together by Melissa KruegerThe Book of Psalms- David (and other authors') honest and emotional outpourings to the Lord All sin is equal before the Lord's eyes Joy is in Jesus Free Bible app World on Fire: Walking in the Wisdom of Christ When the World is Fighting About Everything “Promises” and “Million Little Miracles” by Maverick City Music “Wait on You” by Maverick City Music The “Jubilee” album Scripture References: Acts 26:18, 1 Peter 2:9- Moving from darkness to light Ephesians 3:20- Exceedingly and abundantly more than we could ask or imagine 2 Corinthians 4:17, Ecclesiastes 3:11- There is an eternity that awaits us John 4:13-14, 2 Corinthians 4:16-18, 1 Peter 1:3-6 -The hope we have in Jesus Psalm 139:1-12, Psalm 23- He's on the mountain tops and in the valleys John 15, (and many other scriptures shared below) God has called us to cultivate and grow ourselves and relationships with Him and with the body Jude 1:24,Psalm 121;7- He is a God who keeps you Matthew 6:31-32, Matthew 7:11, Luke 12:24 Philippians 4:19- God will provide Isaiah 63:7, Deuteronomy 11:18- We know and remember what God has done for us Acts 1-2- How the Church began Deuteronomy 7:9, John 13:34,-Being faithful because God is faithful Matthew 5:38-42, Matthew 18, Ephesians 4:26-Handling disagreement in the body Acts 9:15, Acts 22:21- Paul would be the one to go to the Gentiles Ephesians 2:19-22, 1 John 3:1-2-The body of Christ is a family Ruth 1:16-17-Where you go I will go Genesis 5:32-10:1- Noah was told to build the boat, and then… years go by Judges 6-7- Gideon and alllllllll his words from the Lord and all his angels (God love him) John 10:10- Satan works overtime to seek and destroy Ephesians 3-4- Our calling is so big as the Church/ the purpose of the church, the divine mystery of our transformation ministers to principalities Matthew 5:1-12- The Beatitudes Matthew 5:4-Blessed are those who mourn Ecclesiastes 1:9-There is nothing new under the sun Romans 6:23- All sin cost the same: the death of Christ Ephesians 2:8-9, 2:20- We are all saved by the same grace and gift of Christ's sacrifice and resurrection Genesis 1:27, 1 Corinthians 12:12-27- We are all image bearers, called not to uniformity but unity Matthew 22:36-40- When we love the Lord our God rightly, then we can love our neighbor as yourself Psalm 13- honest lament before God Daniel 3:16-20, Esther 4:14- And if He will not Psalm 27:13-14- God has good for me in the land of the living Galatians 5:22-23- Joy is a fruit of the spirit Revelations 21- There's an end date on the things that hurt us Psalm 16:11- In His presence is the fullness of joy 1 Peter 1:3- We live with hope Psalm 51 2 Samuel- 11:1-In the season when kings go to war…. #WisdomWednesdays: How to Stop Putting People on a Pedestal and Comparing Yourself with Others If you're like most people, you probably begin comparing yourself with others at the sight of greener pastures. However, what others choose to show us often does not include their struggles and flaws. In addition, everyone has a unique life path. Thus, it's best to refrain from putting others on pedestals. Instead, look inwards. Ask yourself — how can you bring joy into your life? Can you be the sun in someone else's? In this episode, Rosie and Tessa discuss the pitfalls of putting others on a pedestal and comparing yourself with others. They also touch on our humanness, making mistakes, and how everyone can change if we allow them to do so. Rosie also talks about choosing value-adding friendships and shares a personal experience about setting boundaries. Tune in to discover simple ways to be more in tune with yourself and combat the lack mentality! Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Understand why you shouldn't put people on a pedestal and stop comparing yourself with others. Discover the need to look beyond people's mistakes and allow them to change. Know the importance of choosing what kind of friendships to keep in your life. Episode Highlights Why We Shouldn't Put Other People on a Pedestal We're all humans who make mistakes. So, putting others on a pedestal only sets you up for disappointment. We're all flawed, but we tend to hide those parts of ourselves from the world. Instead, we only show our highlight reels. Instead of comparing yourself with others, you can direct your energy and attention inward, toward things that bring you joy. More often than not, we admire people not because they have something that we don't, but because they live more freely than us. Looking at someone carrying out their purpose can either spur us into action or make us feel defeated. How to Stop Comparing Yourself with Others We need to pause and consider that other people's lives are their own. We never know what someone else is going through. So, the best we can do is wish them well on their journey. Also, recognize that you have a lot to be grateful for in your life. Doing so can help distance yourself from a ‘lack' mentality. Ask yourself, what are the things you've done that make you feel proud? Acting on Inspiration It's not entirely wrong to put others on a pedestal because these people can inspire us to excel. The issue comes with being addicted to the inspiration and not doing anything in return. We have to create an outlet for this inspiration, or it becomes corrosive. Looking Beyond Mistakes People make mistakes. What's important is how we process and learn from them. Sometimes, it's difficult to own up to our own mistakes due to fear of rejection. We must give ourselves and others room to make mistakes and learn from them. People can change, and we should give them that space to grow. If people are acting out, it's often because they come from a place of pain. On Friendships There are three types of friends—high maintenance, low maintenance, and no maintenance. There is a correct balance of friends for you. You can only give and take so much. Keep friendships that are value-adding to your life. It's okay to let go of friends. Asymmetrical relationships can be harmful to both of you. The key to navigating friendships is clear boundaries. Listen to the full episode to hear Rosie's story about a person who wanted to be friends with her. Final Thoughts To become better friends, we can reflect on this question: How do we show up as the sun in other people's lives? It is essential to cultivate your sense of self through meditation or alone time. Through mindfulness, you can know yourself instead of focusing your attention on how people perceive you. Knowing who you truly are can help you navigate life without being clouded by others' judgments. 5 Powerful Quotes [04:36] “Instead of comparing somebody else's outsides to our insides, we can reflect and put our attention and energy into the things that make us happy and bring us joy.” [11:33] “If we are just beings that want to consume inspiration and never do something in return, it's going to eventually create a void.” [22:18] “Somebody that maybe you admire or that you see that might have this outwardly wonderful-looking life could be going through a lot. So I always say, don't put people on pedestals.” [37:01] “It's time to release that relationship out into the world because it's not serving you. And I do believe that you outgrow people.” [41:52] “Without mindfulness, you will always be constructing your sense of self based on others' perceptions.” This episode is brought to you by Thrive Causemetics Get 15% OFF your first order thrivecausemetics.com/loved This episode is brought to you by FAHERTY Go to www.fahertybrand.com Use Code: LOVED for 20% OFF This episode brought to you by ReadySlim Tea www.readyslim.com/loved To save 25% off your first order of Ready Slim's 28 Day Detox Tea Kit plus a FREE collapsable water bottle. When you’re riding the roller coaster of life, there are inevitable twists and turns. Riding those bends can often feel stressful, anxious, and sometimes even empty. As I have been doing most mornings, I woke up today and practiced my daily routine of reading a passage from Mark Nepo’s book, The Book of Awakening. The passage landed deeply in the midst of the twists and turns life has recently thrown my way as I help to care for ill and aging parents. I’m exhausted. And I’ve come to realize I’ve slipped back into my old habits. I’m not taking my own ‘Soulbbatical medicine’ in the midst of a family crisis. It’s critical to take the time to pause and check-in with ourselves, even more so in times of anxiety, stress, and overwhelm. It’s time for us to rebel for radical self-commitment. In this episode, I discuss the importance of rebelling FOR self-commitment, what it means, and how it’s different from (and bigger than) self-care. In fact, it’s an umbrella concept that encompasses self-care and invites us to take that commitment a few steps deeper in our lives. I share an excerpt from Mark Nepo’s The Book of Awakening and discuss what it made me realize about how I’ve been taking care of myself (or not) amidst a recent family crisis. I underscore the essence of evaluating the things that truly matter to us and describe the art of giving the “Gracious No.” I also enumerate some simple, powerful tools for how we can practice and think about radical self-commitment and highlight how extraordinary achievements are really just a series of tiny steps. “This idea of radical self-commitment is bigger than self-care. It is an awareness of what we need in any given moment.”- Shelley Paxton This week on Rebel Souls: The importance of taking the time to be refreshed and renewed What our “surge capacity” is and how it helps us cope with stressful situations The good and the bad of working from home Rebelling FOR radical self-commitment The difference between self-care and radical self-commitment Why you need to think about the values you live for Why it’s important to commit to our boundaries Thinking about your “10s” (Mark Silverman’s concept from the book Only 10s 2.0) and why it’s essential to spend our time and energy on things that matter the most What it means to have courageous conversations and how to offer the “gracious no” Why we should check-in on ourselves more than once a day What it looks like to heighten our own awareness of how we’re feeling mentally, physically, and emotionally – and what we need in support of those feelings The next important step to take after checking-in on ourselves The three ‘P’ tool to practicing radical self-commitment The power of giving yourself permission to slow down, breathe, and check-in The impact of rebelling for radical self-commitment Resources Mentioned: Your ‘Surge Capacity’ is Depleted - It’s Why You Feel Awful by Tara Haelle on Medium The Book of Awakening: Having the Life You Want by Being Present to the Life You Have by Mark Nepo Related Content: Addison Brasil Rebelling FOR Mental Health Rebelling FOR The Big Rocks Book: Soulbbatical: A Corporate Rebel’s Guide to Finding Your Best Life Join us every Friday at 8am PT / 10am CT for our weekly Clubhouse chat - Soul Success: Your Truth is Your Superpower - Hosted by Christina Glickman and Shelley Paxton Liberate Your Soul & Join the Rebelution Thanks for tuning into this week’s episode of Rebel Souls with your host, Shelley Paxton, the podcast dedicated to helping leaders reject the status quo, liberate their soul, and become a lifelong rebel. Mike shares the F.O.R.C.E acronym as a useful tool for discernment and decision-making. He also teaches how to recognize internal coaches and find good communities that support our highest good. Tune in to the full episode to learn how you can live with purpose! Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Recognize and hack distorted thinking using F.O.R.C.E. Episode Highlights Mike’s Story Mike turned his life around by refusing to be chained by the environment he grew up in and becoming a victor of circumstance. Although the pandemic is exceptionally challenging, Mike admits that he went through harder moments in the past. Mike started rewriting his book during COVID-19. Later on, he decided to dedicate it to the lost and lonely. Sometimes, the things we create are what we and others need to hear. Slowing Down, Being Grateful While rewriting the book, Mike made sure to add stories of how people are working through the current crisis. Mike has to remind himself every now and then to be grateful for the success he enjoys today. He admits it’s been like a trip beyond his wildest dreams, from writing bestsellers to speaking for large audiences. Despite being in the limelight for two and half years, Mike still struggles to balance taking ownership of his success and being humble. Understanding the F.O.R.C.E. Mike developed a coaching formula for anyone who feels lost or disconnected using the cognitive behavioral therapy framework. The F.O.R.C.E is an acronym that stands for five cognitive distortions. F represents fortune-telling, O for overgeneralizing, R for rigid thinking, C for confused purpose, and E for emotional reasoning. The solution to these cognitive distortions can be found in the same acronym. Fact-finding is the antidote to fortune-telling, objective thinking to overgeneralizing, relaxation to rigid thinking, clarified purpose to confused purpose, and evidence-based thinking to emotional reasoning. Before making a decision, make sure to check the filter you’re using to assess the situation. If it falls under the five cognitive distortions, use the corresponding acronym to break out of that mental loop. On Coaching Mike believes that a sense of community is an essential component in inspiring change. It’s more challenging to create and maintain that connection during the pandemic. For Mike, the first step to change is to be fully honest with yourself. In the end, we’re all coaches and experts in life. However, the moment you think you have all the answers is when you stop becoming a coach. The Right Coach Mike cautions against coaches who sell easy and quick fixes. Coming from a clinical background, Mike suggests that it’s unethical to sell something to someone trying their best to recover from trauma. There’s a big difference between a coach speaking to help and one speaking to sell. According to Mike, it’s best to let people be vulnerable rather than inviting them to expensive therapies. You have internal resources that you can always draw on to improve yourself. If you can’t afford to get professional help, several communities offer free assistance. Being Honest with Yourself As long as you’re not hurting anyone, there’s no wrong intention or motivation. Having worked in TV and show business, Mike discovered that most people rarely want to change others' lives. What you’re saying to others has to be congruent with your inner truth. Be honest and lean into what you want to do. As long as you’re true to yourself, people will support you. Whatever you’re doing has to fit into your long-term vision and be aligned with your values. Live with Purpose If you ever have to choose between becoming well-known or helping other people, know that the former feels empty and the latter more meaningful. Whenever you have to make a similar decision, take a step back and clarify your purpose. Why do you do what you do, and why do you love what you love? This wisdom can apply in even the most mundane circumstance. If you feel out of place at an event, revisit why you came in the first place. Often, you’ll discover that it’s not about you. With clarity, it becomes easier to live with purpose and make decisions from that place of discernment. For Mike, to live with purpose feels like being wrapped in a giant hug. He admits it feels much better than being in the New York Times bestselling authors list. Radically Loved Mike feels radically loved when he’s with someone who accepts him perfectly and unconditionally. He recalls a time during prayer when he heard a voice that asked him to satisfy his hunger first. The spiritual is not limited to the divine and the sacred but can be something as simple as taking care of your needs or taking a deep breath. 5 Powerful Quotes from this Episode [15:08] “So before making a decision, especially decisions that are creating a lot of anxiety or fear, it's really good to check our filter. That's kind of the filtering system where it helps people get out of that cognitive loop of the same fear just coming up every day and into kind of the facts of life.” [22:23] “We're all in this together. I think as soon as a coach becomes uncoachable or has all the answers, it's a dead-end street.” [29:44] “We're all artists. And it's just when you're continually pushing yourself to just be great in your art, the universe connects you with other art, and you get to play and have fun.” [47:41] “Clarifying our purpose each day matters, and making a decision to do that matters. It creates this amazing spiritual experience, or whatever someone believes, where we're like, ‘I belong here.’” [50:31] “I was very successful before I became a New York Times bestselling author. It didn't make me any more successful like it didn't give me a giant hug. What gives me a giant hug is being purposeful in my life.” About Mike Mike Bayer is a personal development coach and New York Times bestselling author who has made it his life mission to help people be their best selves. Whether you're in a relationship or not, listen in for 10 Ways to Own the Unexpected and Love the Life You Have. Allie Barnes is an author, Latter-day Saint, and people person. She is a masters student studying leadership, and previously graduated with a bachelor's degree in Family Studies. I read her book “Not According to Plan” and absolutely loved her thoughts on relationships and faith, and I also had the privilege to have a conversation with her in person about some of those things. She branded her website “Looks Like Wandering” and I can't get enough of that premise - how our paths in life are not always linear. That perspective is so refreshing, and so honest. Connect with Allie @lookslikewandering on IG and at: lookslikewandering.com . Connect with us on FB & IG @ofprogressandpurpose + Find the Show Notes and more @ https://ofprogressandpurpose.com/category/the-podcast/ . Thank you for being here!

We also discuss how to discern from a place of wisdom and become aware of our ego. If you want to learn useful insights to help you face the year ahead, tune in to the full episode. Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Discover our top three lessons from 2020. Learn how to slip into a place of discernment. Recognize the importance of becoming aware of your ego and owning up to uncomfortable feelings. Don’t forget to give yourself a present this year, too. Rosie’s gift to herself is disconnecting from technology. Tess recalls fond childhood memories of Christmas and reflects how she can recreate that atmosphere this year. Meditative Practices For Rosie, painting by the numbers is a meditative practice. On her part, Tess slips into meditation by writing poetry and knitting. A passage from Mark Nepo’s book highlights the significance of remembering and forgetting, emphasizing the importance of stillness and surrender. Tess’ Biggest Lessons Tess realized that instead of running around and trying her hardest to tick her to-do-lists, sitting still was more productive. Even though she doesn’t chase after opportunities, they come her way regardless. Tess also discovered that she didn’t like sharing her food. Tess continues to explore different eating modalities as she learns more about her body. Rosie’s Biggest Lessons On her part, Rosie discovered that she could work from home effectively by creating a schedule and sticking to it. Second, she learned that you can still make mistakes even if you’re working on improving yourself. Instead of ignoring her flaws, she is slowly learning to accept them. Any sort of change and transformation is highly uncomfortable. Even as Rosie tries her best to get pregnant, she is still probing the motivations behind her desire to be a mother. She’s learning to surrender her attachment to what she believes her life ought to be. Catching Yourself Your mental state affects your ability to practice mindfulness, and falling victim to that reactionary impulse. There are three voices in your head. The first is impulsive, the second voice calls for restraint, and the third is the voice of wisdom. For Rosie, it’s not a matter of right or wrong but learning to observe the situation from a place of discernment. Since we are egocentric beings, it can be hard to find and listen to that third voice. Rosie admits that she occasionally catches herself listening to the first and second voices. However, she knows what to do to pull herself out of a negative spiral. Taming The Ego Your ego is the primary source of your emotional upheaval. Learn to discern when it’s the right time to speak up and use your voice. Your emotional distress may not be evident to your partner. Find a healthy way to express that energy. Otherwise, those feelings will fester and affect your relationship. Although becoming aware of your ego can be uncomfortable, it is also a humbling experience. 5 Powerful Quotes [TESS] 16:46 “I realized that all the things that I was running around doing, kind of the frenetic to-do list wasn't as necessary as I thought it was. As I stopped driving back and forth in town like a ping pong ball and sat a little bit more still and just, you know, stayed home more, I realized that was enough.” [TESS]17:33 “I do believe that the universe is on my side. And that if there's something that I need to come to me, it will. So that's one thing that 2020 has taught me.” [ROSIE] 23:17 “By no way do I have things figured out. And I often see my defects of character. And I always strive to work on the things that aren't serving my highest good, but I learned to actually accept that this year as opposed to just bypassing it.” [ROSIE] 29:24 “So it's not a choice of doing what's right or doing what's wrong. It's really a matter of how can you observe the situation from a wise place, from a place of wisdom and truly a place of discerning.” [ROSIE] 33:35 “That energy needs to be expressed one way or another. Our emotions need to be fully realized in order for them to have a complete cycle, or they're going to live inside your body.” About Tess Tessa Tovar is a yoga instructor with over 500 hours of Yoga Teacher Training through 5-Star Yoga Alliance Rated YogaWorks Programs. I wanted answers, that's why I got into analysis. That's why I pursued all this, I wanted answers. Mindfulness has been the icing on the cake. I laid the foundation and found all the gears I had to get into gear and I've put myself into a better position to experience life. Mindfulness now is the ability to take all of that and take that deep breath and really experience the wonder and the beauty and the excitement of life. It only gets better. I learned through mindfulness, every day, every decade is better than the one preceding it. I'm so encouraged by life itself. Thoughts on Breathing The breath is so central to so many schools and orientations. The breath is that which we exist on. It is everything that is of life itself. It is the embodiment, psychologically and physically of that which sustains us. As we focus on the breath, I think we touch something much deeper. This week on the show we speak with Lacey Langford. She is the founder of LaceyLangford.com a personal finance blog and a boutique financial coaching practice specializing in the unique world of the United States military. Lacey is also the founder and host of The Military Money Show, a podcast all about money and military. She's a U.S. Air Force Veteran, Milspouse, financial coach, speaker, and writer who changes people’s lives from being fearful of money to having control and confidence with it. In today's episode, we wanted to focus on some of the common missteps she sees with young people entering the military and how she helps set them us for a secure financial future. The most common mistakes she sees with young military personnel - lifestyle creep and overspending. As well as not saving their money. She says - Cars are kryptonite! We absolutely agree. A major pitfall for young service members is getting into a car purchase right away. Getting a vehicle with money that is not “cemented.” In spite of high interest rates and high payments. Then, when they are no longer deployed they can no longer afford the payments. It's a common problem and when she advises young services members avoid at all costs. When Lacey is counseling military service members for the first time there are a few critical steps she discusses first. She recommends: Create a Financial Layout - know exactly how much money you have coming in (pay and allowances) and what is going out. It’s simple but keeping it simple is the best way to go. That is the basic foundation of your financial success. You can then adjust from there. Create boundaries. You cannot have a blank check for everything. You don’t have to keep up with other people. You have to save your money and spend less than you earn. You are saving for your current self and your 80-year-old self. ____ Tips for young people wanting to enlist: Score as high as possible on the ASVAB - it will create more job opportunities for you. Have your job choice solidified before you enter. ____ Some of the great resources available to service members: Retirement benefits: Not only a pension after 20 years but a TSP (like a 401K) with up to a 5% match. The benefit of contributing to TSP - get the match. That is a 50% ROI right off the top. If you separate from the military, you can roll over the TSP account as a civilian. On deployment utilize the Savings Deposit Program - available after 30 days “n country/in theater” and will pay 10% Use all the services available: free trees, lending closets, taxes free, free financial counselors, Military One Source - they will find you free counselors in your area Take your installation tour! Valuable Intel. They are pointing out where all of these resources are. ------ Lacey on the Final Questions: One money lesson from childhood = debt takes away your freedom One Lesson She Wants to Pass on To Her Children: Spend less than you make, but don't forget to invest it. Spiritual Bypassing is part of entering into spiritual truth with yourself. As humans, we generally want to avoid pain and anxiety. It's hard-wired into us. So when faced with promises of a better way, a way free of strife, and it looks as virtuous as most spiritual quick fixes claim to be, most of us go there at least some of the time. But the danger is in existing there. Pain and sorrow serve a purpose and bring us lessons and messages about our personal journey. They are the True "fast" path (which may last your lifetime) to finding what lives in our core- personal love, integrity and light- and strengthen us to face a myriad of everyday challenges and find meaning for our existence. In this episode, I reference a personal short poem and the concepts of Robert Augustus Masters from his book Spiritual Bypassing: When Spirituality Disconnects us from What Really Matters Published 2010 by North Atlantic Books. I also include a short excerpt from a reading of Mark Nepo (less than 10% of the overall reading for copyright reasons) from The Book of Awakening: Having the Life You Want by Being Present to the Life You Have . Charlie is an author and speaker sought out for his lectures, seminars and keynote addresses on business intelligence, performance management and personal empowerment. He is the Senior Director of Capital Markets at RXR Realty, a multi-billion dollar real estate company based in New York. He hosts a weekly radio show on the NSN radio network and the Unlocking Greatness podcast. Harary is an adjunct clinical professor of management and entrepreneurship at the Syms School of Business at Yeshiva University. He received his J.D. from Columbia Law School where he was awarded the James Kent Scholar and the Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. You have all the resources you need to succeed, says Charlie, author of UNLOCKING GREATNESS: The Unexpected Journey from the Life You Have to the Life You Want. He believes that everything you need in order to achieve your dreams is already inside you. The key to realizing your full potential starts by tapping into the astonishing ability of your brain by understanding its neuroplasticity. That means just by changing your thoughts you can change the structure of your brain. “If our minds shape reality and our schemas [our neural roadmaps] determine our quality of life, then neuroplasticity is both permission and proof that each of us has the ability to enhance, modify, and transform not only our minds, but also our lives,” It's life's ultimate game changer. Our energy attracts similar energies. We line up our energies with things we want. Why do we want the things we want? When we keep taking action without lining up our energies, we meet much resistance. Segment 1: Sam introduces his guest, author and keynote speaker Charlie Hereri*. Charlie started his life as an attorney with a life and kid. As time passes, and as he met more people, Charlie was inspired to write his book “Unlocking Greatness.” The book details perpetual lack of satisfaction in our culture. We have so many material things in our lives, but why aren't we viscerally happy? We've bought into the idea that consumption and material possessions lead to happiness. Segment 2: Charlie cared more about the race rather than looking at the larger picture. When we sit down to do something, we automatically find reasons to stop. When writing his book, Charlie had difficulties crafting a narrative. What a lot of us think is that, between our two ears is a beat-up used car. Our brain's potential is profound. Our energy and focus affects our genes; we can reprogram our lives. Sam and Charlie delve into Neuroplasticity. We walk around with insecurities because our brains made connections between two unrelated occurrences. Whatever is behind us does not have to affect what is ahead. Everytime we look back at negative narratives, we give them strength. We are much more fluid than we believe. Segment 3: Once we figure out how our brain works, what's the next step? If we use our brains to get more stuff, we'll have more stuff, but we won't be satisfied. Are we looking to get, or give? When we live in our soul, our mind will follow. Sam reads a listener's comment about living in the future instead of living in the present. Everywhere we are, we're in one hundred places. We're afraid of missing out and our souls are not getting nourishment. Greatness is not becoming; greatness is here.Charlie grew up in faith, but it more so a “given” idea. Segment 4: Who inspires Charlie? We must surpass limitations. We must be hungry for wisdom. If we buy into the rules that society, the more we blind our minds to opportunities. Our brains are like a google search engine: it will cater to whatever you input. Reinforcing positivity is the most challenging aspect. We can live in our minds so easily, but blending this with body, heart, and soul isn't easily. We must experience discomfort before we are comfortable. s it possible to love the life you have — acknowledging and accepting the conditions of your life exactly as they are — and drop the struggle to make you and your life different? Today’s guest—Roger Housden— sent me a sneak preview of his book, Dropping the Struggle: Seven Ways to Love the Life You Have, which actually came out the day we recorded this! I was so touched by his work; and it resonated with me on many different levels and in various areas of my life—that I thought it’d be an honor to have him come on the show and talk more about it. Roger Housden (whose-den), is the author of Dropping the Struggle and numerous other books, including the best-selling Ten Poems series, which began in 2001 with Ten Poems to Change Your Life and ended with Ten Poems to Say Goodbye in 2012. He offers writing workshops, both live and online, with an emphasis on self-discovery and exploration. Roger wrote Dropping the Struggle from first hand experience as someone who, up until just a few years ago, spent much of his time in a covert struggle with life. Despite his success as the bestselling author of the Ten Poems to Change Your Life series, he often felt that something, which he couldn’t quite put his finger on, was missing. Like many of us, he struggled with the past, the future, relationships, his desire to improve himself, and his own mortality. His inner struggle continued until he got to know himself at a level deep enough that he was able to see how he was making his life needlessly difficult and make a conscious choice to let go. What I love is that he shares lessons from his own experience as he offers readers seven ways to love the life they have by dropping the struggle to be special, dropping the struggle for a perfect life, dropping the struggle for meaning, dropping the struggle for love, dropping the struggle with time, dropping the struggle with change, and dropping the struggle to know. And in our interview here together, Roger talks about the difference between “effort” and “struggle,” how it is that our struggles all tie back to our sense of identity, and how we can use that intel to shape our life choices—including careers, relationships, etc. And he even recounts how he was captured and interrogated for two days in Tehran, and how that experience had a MAJOR impact on him and his view of life. Roger brings so much clear wisdom to the show, and I’m so honored to dive into his story together. Let’s listen in…

Hard work doesn't have to be a struggle. Pouring your energy into a project isn't the same experience as struggling, although it can feel like you can't have one without the other. The truth is, it's when we're not fully focused on what we're doing that the struggle comes in – we start to worry or listen to our negative assumptions, and stop being present in the current moment. Our expert guest, Roger Housden, is here to talk about what it means to struggle and how we can release ourselves from it by welcoming our own reality and addressing our assumptions.Struggle is an internal challenge that will cause us pain if we don't work through it. Roger Housden is an author, a speaker, and a writer. He has published more than 27 books and has had work appear in Oprah Magazine, the New York Times, and the LA Times. His most recent book is Dropping the Struggle, 7 Way to Love the Life You Have. He currently runs writing workshops online and in person, with a focus on personal discovery and exploration.
