Ep 40: Creating Connections: How the Environment Shapes Learning and Well-being with Dr. Sharon Jackson

Reimagine Childhood

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 12, 2024 43:47

Dr. Sharon R. Jackson is a life-long early childhood advocate and a seasoned professional with experience in local, state, and national presentations throughout her career. She is an encourager by nature…From a background that includes public schools, military childcare centers, faith-based organizations, and for-profit settings, her experience is not only wide-ranging but also deeply grounded in appropriate practice and respect for young children. Dr. Jackson has held positions of leadership in her community and in the organizations in which she has been employed. She earned her PhD from Texas A&M University and is currently a professor of early childhood education at Blinn College in College Station. Today, we're talking about the importance of the environment as the third teacher – the philosophy that spaces can significantly influence development and learning. Sharon will emphasize just how important the environment is–It's not just physical objects like books and toys; it also includes the emotional well-being of the children. While we discuss the third teacher that originated from the Reggio philosophy, we will also talk about the role of parents as the child's first teacher. We're also going to chat about the adult in the classroom as the second teacher. Second teachers have the important job of giving comfort, consistency, and connection in creating a supportive social-emotional environment for young children. Together, we'll discuss the benefits of a well-laid-out environment, such as promoting learning, language development, and creativity, as well as building children's confidence! We will address the challenges of creating an appropriate environment, including the pressure to focus on academics and parental expectations. Recognizing the needed respect for children in the stage that they are in, being who they are, rather than pushing and rushing them toward some other agenda is so valuable. What a difference that mindset shift could make in creating environments for the children in our care. I hope this episode makes you pause for a moment and think about your classroom environment a little differently. And I hope you'll “get on your knees at the door” and consider the children's perspective and also…God's perspective on this adventure in early childhood.    Dr. Jackson's article on Environments Curating Play - https://curatingplay.com/ Early Essentials - https://earlyessentials.org/ As always, we would love to connect with you on Instagram and on Facebook

My name is Sarah Sprayberry. I was born and raised in the hills of Boerne where I began bleeding maroon the second I came out of the womb. To say that my parents are die-hard Aggies would be an understatement, so naturally, I became academically inbred by receiving my bachelor's and master's as well as pursuing my PhD at Texas A&M. In my masters, I developed an E.coli pig model for human environmental enteropathy (a nutritional disease seen in youth in third world countries) while also managing the Texas A&M swine farm as one of the first female operators at Texas A&M. I have always had a passion for agriculture as I grew up raising pigs in 4-H, was involved in my high school's FFA and competed at horse shows. Through my teaching at Blinn College and working for Texas 4-H, I solidified my desire to connect our youth with the farmers that feed them. I especially love developing culturally responsive programs for minoritized youth that can feel left out or overlooked. The Blinn College dance team has won numerous American Dance and Drill Team collegiate championships, has won eight national titles at the National Dance Alliance (NDA) College Nationals and six national tiles at the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) College Nationals. In 2019, Blinn's dance team made history by claiming national titles in Dance Team Performance Open and Pom Division II. Barland Flisowski is a former member of the Blinn dance team and a graduate of Southwest Texas State University – now Texas State University – in San Marcos, Texas, with a degree in exercise sports science and minor in political science. She was also a member of the dance company Orchesis. She also earned her master's in physical education and health from Prairie View A&M University. Barland Flisowski started her teaching career at Mesquite ISD, where she taught for two years at Berry Middle school. She went on to Carrollton Farmers Branch ISD to become the director of the award-winning RL Turner Lionettes and dance department head. She was the director of the Lionettes for seven years before returning to Blinn as the head coach of the Blinn College dance and cheer teams. Barland Flisowski also is a 20-year staff member with American Dance and Drill Team School, where she has been the Novelty Staff Captain and Social Officer Coordinator.  Sarah has traveled to Florida as a member of ESP Productions, the halftime production company of the Citrus Bowl for over 10 years. She has been a speaker at Drill Team Directors of America and assisted with speaking at Texas Dance Educators Association. Sarah is a member of NDCA, National Dance Coaches Association where she is a Executive Board member, College Division Representative and on the Small College Committee. She has done choreography for high schools all around Texas and beyond and loves working with all dancers and helping them find their place in college dance. In terms of drugs, the world of anesthesiology can be mystifying to the outside world. Michelle Gaines, an expert nurse anesthesiologist, breaks down different aspect of drug use in anesthesiology, from legal to illegal. She explains the delicacy of mixing drugs to bring a patient out of anesthesia and explains while, though it is rare, some patients do wake up before the surgery is complete. Though laypeople would be surprised to learn that anesthesiology, as well as other realms of medicine, use non-FDA-approved drugs, Michelle highlights the immense value of drugs that have never received that approval. She also outlines the huge cost to a pharmacy company of getting the FDA to approve a drug. She candidly reveals the extent to which those who work in anesthesiology may become addicted to certain drugs and describes the medical and legal implications of working while under a drug's influence. Michelle also describes the long and laborious process by which a practitioner who has overcome an addiction can return to practice. It’s that time of year again. We’re back for another season as we journey through Lent together. This year, we’re going to do things a little different than before. The past couple of years we’ve done a daily podcast throughout the lenten season and I’ve lived in my basement all alone with nothing but enormous amounts of coffee and spray cheese, but this year we’re moving to an extended weekly podcast with what we think are the best sections of our previous episodes. Today we’re talking with Mark Thomas. Mark and Lucy, along with their son Canaan, came to Central last year after returning to the area from Texas where Mark taught Philosophy at Blinn College in Bryan, Texas. Mark and Lucy have traveled to many places, and we’ll hear about one of those trips now as we begin our journey into Lent.

Tim Montgomery did have it all. The money and fame, the records and endorsements. Montgomery, who transferred from Blinn College in Texas to run track at Norfolk State in 1994, won a silver medal in the 400-meter relay at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, then a gold in the same event at the 2000 Sydney Games. And in 2002, he ran the 100 meters in a world-record time of 9.78 seconds. Then his world came crashing down. It began in 2005, when Montgomery was charged with using illegal performance-enhancing drugs. Though he had not failed a drug test, the United States Anti-Doping Agency issued a four-year suspension, which the Court of Arbitration for Sport lowered to two years. Even worse, all of his results and awards since March 2001 – including his world record – were stripped. The downward spiral was only beginning. He became entangled in a counterfeit-check ring with his one-time NSU track coach Steve Riddick, involving more than $5 million in phony checks. While awaiting sentencing, he was arrested and accused of distributing heroin. He would later plead guilty. "When I got suspended ... I never had something get pulled away from me that I loved," Montgomery said recently. "And the result from having something I lost made me go into a place and do things that really weren't of my character." Montgomery would spend the next 4½ years in prison. It gave him time to reflect on his life. And it wasn't pretty. He knew he had hurt many and abandoned those who truly loved him. "I learned ... that sometimes we put emphasis on things that have no value." Montgomery was released in May 2012. He spent three months in a halfway house, working construction as a condition of his release. "I had earned a couple of million dollars in my track career," Montgomery said. "And now I had to humble myself to work for 12 cents a day." Montgomery, who today trains athletes in Gainesville through a program called NUMA (Never Underestimate My Ability) Speed, said prison taught him about life and got him to think how he wants to be remembered. "If your purpose is all about you and what you accomplished, then you haven't found your purpose," Montgomery said. "What I've been through, I can touch millions of people. Had I not been through what I've been through, I would have only touched a few people."
