We need to discuss some poisons found in the garden! My goal was to go into the poisons that can be found in the vegetable garden as well as in the flower garden, but I have to make it two parts because I somehow never realize how long I can talk about stuff! Also, Adam has capped my research at 5,000 words per episode as I struggle with stopping anything. Therefore, we are discussing some poisons that can be found in the vegetable gardens around the world. Rhubarb leaves, solanine in potatoes (at least those not stored properly), Cassava, ginkgo biloba seeds, cashews, and more. We have some fun (and some more tragic) stories behind each of these as well as the history and folklore of their growth and use. For instance, we need to talk about that time in WWI when the British government encouraged their citizens to eat rhubarb leaves while food was scarce or why it is not okay to munch on houseplants (I hope we all knew that one, but hey, make sure they are out of reach of children or pets if toxic). How about the guy who worked hard to make the potato popular in France? Did you know potatoes were actually once banned there because it was believed they could cause leprosy or plague? Well, obviously they do not, but when green they can make you very sick.Cassava! It is a staple crop in parts of South America and in Africa, but when not processed correctly, it can be deadly as they contain cyanogenic glycosides. So how do so many people eat it? And have there been any recent cases of poisoning from cassava? Unfortunately, yes.Have you ever seen a cashew tree or its fruit? A story from the Philippines gives a fun explanation for why it looks the way it does. Also, before being processed for eating, they are also poisonous, covered with the same substance that causes the itchy reaction when you touch poison ivy.How about a story concerning the six Gingko trees that survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and how their seeds can still cause accidental poisonings today. Also, that Ginkgo leaf extract some people are taking? According to some recent studies, it may not even be helpful. Let's talk about it!Thank you to all of our listeners and supporters! The late Quincy Jones once said, "Music is the melody of the gods." I agree, and I would add that food is the flavor of the gods.Food is everything. What and how we eat says a lot about us. More importantly, it tells a little about our history, and, in some cases, it's one of the motifs we use as an expression of our culture and our traditions. For immigrants, food carries an ever deeper meaning. Not to be dramatic, but it's a link to the past [taste/nostalgia], a bridge to the future [the evolution of said meal in a new place], and a way to hold on to identity in the murky world of being an immigrant.Ozoz Sokoh, a Nigerian food writer, explorer, educator, and author of Chop Chop: Cooking the Food of Nigeria, joined me on The Newcomers Podcast to chat about food as identity. We also explored:* How cooking or eating familiar dishes bring a sense of home and belonging, even in unfamiliar environments* Why understanding the essence and history of a dish is important * Why recording the history of a meal is key to preserving the cultural heritage of a people* The roles institutional bias and racism in food media play in hindering the representation of certain cuisines, and more good stuff. But that's not all the good stuff. She's also shared some zesty food recipes.Five Nigerian recipes you can try this Christmas holidays* Nigerian pepper soup: One of my personal favorites. I think it tastes better with goat meat. But you decide. * Agbalumo Carrot Cake: You'll probably need to check the African store nearby for agbalumo. * Cassava and Coconut Salad: Ozoz has taken a popular Nigerian street food, Abacha, and turned it into something that not only looks delicious, but might have a broader appeal. I'm definitely trying this out over the holidays.* Zobo: Everyone has to try Zobo at least once in their life.* Yedem'blong: This is one meal I'm going to need help putting together. But it does sound enticing. Kolanut with pepper sauce. Who's got some adventure in them? P.S. Good morning from Pharma and Biotech daily: the podcast that gives you only what's important to hear in Pharma e Biotech world.Trump has chosen Jay Bhattacharya from Stanford as the new head of the National Institutes of Health, adding to his controversial cabinet picks. Meanwhile, Eli Lilly is currently the best performing pharmaceutical stock of 2024. The newsletter will be taking a break for Thanksgiving and will return on December 2nd with more biopharma news. In other news, PTC has discontinued an ALS asset after a mid-stage failure, BridgeBio's ATTR-CM drug has been approved, Cassava's Alzheimer's drug has failed in Phase III, and Amgen's Maritide did not impress investors. Eli Lilly has seen a significant improvement in its share price this year, while other pharmaceutical companies have not been as fortunate. Additionally, there have been layoffs at Novartis, Recursion, and Kronos. Legal challenges over Lilly's GLP-1 shortages and Sarepta's investment in Arrowhead for RNA drugs are also highlighted.Eli Lilly leads the list of the biggest share movers in the pharmaceutical industry this year, with a significant improvement in its share price. However, other companies like Amgen have faced disappointments, with their weight loss drug Maritide falling short of investor expectations. Sage Therapeutics also suffered setbacks with the discontinuation of its lead candidate Dalzanemdor after clinical failures. Legal challenges over Lilly's GLP-1 shortages have highlighted the FDA's vulnerability post-Chevron deference. In other news, Roche acquires Poseida, Sarepta aims to diversify its pipeline with RNA drugs, and Trump's cabinet picks raise uncertainty in the biopharma environment. Novartis CEO promises more deals, while companies like Novartis, Recursion, and Kronos have announced layoffs. Subscribe for more relevant updates from BioSpace.
Biopharma had its collective deal-making hat on heading into the Thanksgiving holiday, with Roche buying Poseida for up to $1.5 billion, and Sarepta and Arrowhead tying up in a collaboration potentially worth up to $10 billion. These announcements followed last week's news from Novartis, which snatched up Kate Therapeutics for a little over $1 billion while promising more acquisitions below $5 billion. On the regulatory front, the FDA gave BridgeBio—and transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) patients—something to be thankful for late last week with the approval of Attruby for the rare, cardiovascular disease. The nod sets up a potential three-way race with Pfizer's tafamidis and Alnylam's Amvuttra, the latter of which was accepted for FDA review in ATTR-CM on Monday. On the opposite end of the clinical development spectrum, Cassava Sciences' controversial Alzheimer's drug failed to reduce cognitive or functional decline in a Phase III trial. And investors were unimpressed by the 20% weight loss generated by Amgen's MariTide in a much-anticipated Phase II trial, as the company's stock tumbled 11% Tuesday. Drawing much attention from the biopharma industry, President-elect Donald Trump continued with his nominees for top healthcare posts, announcing COVID-19 critic Marty Makary to lead the FDA and well-known vaccine skeptic Dave Weldon for CDC director. Meanwhile, the FDA is grappling with the loss of Chevron Deference pertaining to a legal challenge over Eli Lilly's GLP-1 shortages. Finally, the next generation of antibody-drug conjugates remains hot, with Danish biotech Adcendo reeling in $135M in a Series B financing round.

Send us a textRegular listeners know we love a cooking or baking challenge, and we've been known to bring home something totally new to us to experiment cooking with. On this episode Erin dives into an exploration of cassava root, also known as a yuca. This is a new one for us both, never having cooked with it before. Fair warning, results are mixed! Let's get into it. Erin roasts the raw cassava by first boiling it and then tossing it in oil and seasonings. They turned out not terrible, but a bit dry and too starchy for our taste. In our opinion, just eat potatoes. They're much better. Or perhaps the cassava from the store wasn't fresh enough and just should have been eaten earlier. Who knows. She also tries a recipe called Pan de Yuca (cheese bread) using cassava flour. It's a bit like a small gluten-free cheese bun. These were pretty good fresh out of the oven, but they didn't keep well past the day they were made. We might make these again, knowing to eat them right away! While the biopharma industry has seen glimmers of economic optimism, there were still more than 14,000 employees laid off in the first half of 2024. And BioSpace's readers are among them. In this week's Job Market Trends, H2 Update, 43% of respondents indicated they are currently unemployed, the highest-ever rate since BioSpace started conducting surveys. One large company that intends to eliminate around 680 jobs in its project development sector over the next few years is Novartis. Despite this, the Swiss pharma announced positive Q2 results last week, exceeding revenue expectations thanks to the continued revenue generated by its blockbuster drugs. Johnson & Johnson, which released its second quarter results on Wednesday, also beat analyst estimates. Interestingly, Novartis CEO Vas Narasimhan said in a statement that coming into the market late with another GLP-1 drug would not be a “prudent approach” for the company. Meanwhile, several companies, including start-ups, are firmly committed to the weight loss space. Recently launched companies like Metsera, ProFound Therapeutics and Metaphore are developing GLP-1s or leveraging other mechanisms to target obesity, while market leaders Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly are expanding their GLP-1 pipelines beyond weight loss. Novo and Lilly are also now marketing their GLP-1 medicines, semaglutide and tirzepatide, for weight loss in China, where GLP-1 biosimilars will soon hit the market. And finally, the Cassava Sciences saga continued, with CEO Remi Barbier and SVP of Neuroscience Lindsay Burns both resigning their posts. Cassava has faced allegations of data manipulation relating to its Alzheimer's drug simufilam. The company has denied any wrongdoing.

Today's episode will reveal the 7 foods causing inflammation inside your body, and the better swaps. RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS VIDEO:
Aston University is to help one of the world's largest cassava processers develop a sustainable and faster way to dry its crops. The University has entered a knowledge transfer partnership (KTP) with the Tropical Starch Company, Ghana's leading cassava processing business. According to The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the country is the second biggest consumer of cassava and contributes to almost a quarter of the country's agricultural gross domestic product. More sustainable tech to dry cassava Despite its popularity cassava is difficult to process as it needs to be thoroughly cleaned, mashed, sieved, dried and packaged. Currently the Tropical Starch Company uses industrial uses bin dryers which need electricity or fossil fuels to generate heat and can only dry one crop per production line. They are expensive to run and as it is hard to regulate their temperatures sometimes products are overcooked or discoloured. A KTP is a three-way collaboration between a business, an academic partner and a highly qualified researcher, known as a KTP associate. The UK-wide programme helps businesses to improve their competitiveness and productivity through the better use of knowledge, technology and skills. Aston University is a sector leading KTP provider, with 80% of its completed projects being graded as very good or outstanding by Innovate UK, the national body. The aim of the KTP is to develop an integrated drying device which can operate off-grid, using several different technologies. Aston University will develop an off-grid, solar-powered drying device that is faster, temperature-controllable, uses less energy and can process bigger volumes of raw cassava. Augustine Fiifi Amoah, who is a supervisor at the company said: "We already have the customers demanding it and so we are praying that we will be able to meet demand. "If we could produce 20 tons a day we would be so happy. We have the market, we just need the product!" Although some of these technologies are already developed individually, the way they will be integrated will be new. In particular, data needs to be collected to design and optimise the system which will be completed with computer simulation modelling. This will require expertise in several fields including modular design, desiccant drying techniques (where desiccant materials are used in a piece of industrial equipment to eliminate water) energy systems, post-harvest technology and food engineering. The project is supervised by Dr Ahmed Rezk, senior lecturer in mechanical engineering from Aston University's College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, an expert in thermal systems, whose mainstream research is in sustainable and zero-carbon heating and cooling technologies, in collaboration with Dr Tabbi Wilberforce Awotwe, a lecturer in engineering, who specialises in design optimisation of mechanical systems and energy storage modelling. Dr Rezk said: "The main goal of our research is to find more efficient and green ways of heating and cooling. They are two sides of the same problem, both requiring energy. "If we devise a good heating method through this project it could have implications for cooling methods in other countries as well." Dr Wilberforce Awotwe who is based at Kings College London, has previously conducted research at Aston University. He said "I'm a Ghanaian myself and my vision for this project goes beyond delivering work packages. "If we can get this done we will support many companies in this field, not just one, and address the issue of young people leaving the countryside in search of employment. "The long-term impact on the community is the most important thing." The project will also involve Professor Robert Sarpong Amoah and Dr Fatimah Abubakar Von from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. In addition a KTP associate will be recruited to work at the company's main site in Abura-Dunkwa, Ghana. Once the system has been agreed, the Tropical Starch Company will ...

Hola mi gente, welcome to the “The Aguacate Chronicles”, I'm your host Giraldo Luis Alvaré. Gracias for listening. Last episode, Renata and I touched on the importance of a balanced diet and food from the source minus the preservatives. Keep in mind, It's good to live a little and have some pork chops and chicharrones. I mean, who doesn't like a good chuleta? I know I do. There's nothing wrong with some fried food. All in moderation. We also left you dreaming of arepas. Whether you like to have them filled with chicken, cheese, meat and of course aguacate. It's all good. On the menu for this episode we got platanos, gallo pinto, arroz, arina y huevos frito. Plantains, rice and beans, cornmeal and fried eggs. Mmmm. Hay hambre mi gente. You will here audio clips featuring Creative Director of Somos Arte, Graphic Novelist, Philanthropist, Creator of La Borinqueña, Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez: Co-Founder of Sanguich de Miami, Daniel Figueredo, and Founder of Mozaic Strategies, Carolina Espinal. There's a lot to unpack here mi gente, so cojelo con take it easy. One bite at a time with your favorite beverage. Buen provecho. Enjoy the show. Oluwakemi Oluwasegun (“Kemi”) is changing the face of sustainability in her Nigerian community with cassava and kindness, and she's looking for support. She lives in the quiet and peaceful community of Ila Orangun, Nigeria. She happens to be one of the most genuine and kind people that I have met. She has not had an easy life, yet grounded in God, she's constantly thinking about how she can help other people. She discussed three projects with us in this episode: her cassava factory and potential cassava farm (Winners Food Processing), reusable pads for the girls in her community, and donations of physical goods to help local orphanages with the Oluwadabira Foundation. Investing in or supporting Kemi's projects is simple. She's looking for people who can donate money, clothing, shoes, bags, books, etc. that will keep her projects afloat. If we can't support her directly, we can share her work with those around us. We never know who may be able to help. Thank you for listening. Hola mi gente, we are back for Season 2 of “The Aguacate Chronicles”, I'm your host Giraldo Luis Alvaré. Gracias for listening. A big Aguacate shoutout goes to all the amazing guests in Season 2. Thank you for sharing your favorite foods and beverages you loved growing up and enjoy to this day. This is what inspired the Aguacate Chronicles. Now, you can't talk about culture without food. It's everything and more. Food unites us, it brings us together. I invited mi hermana Renata Sampaio, a renaissance woman, an entrepreneur, psycho-analyst, head of logistics, photographer, musician and of course an amazing chef. She reps Brasil and all the amazing things this beautiful country has to offer starting with la comida/the food. This episode features Bren Herrera and her love for cafecito y flan. That's not all, Renata shares her story, Brasil's national dish and cocktail. Not to mention, lots of coffee and desserts and a few other mouth-watering surprises. Stay close to the kitchen or your favorite food delivery app, because you will be hungry. So let's break bread, put some aguacate on it and jump right into this episode. Y'all, this week is just a green love letter back to everyone. As I wanted to give my platform for the Camp Hill Disaster for the week, I wanted to offer a little extra time for plants, plants, plants! So, settle in, Batchildren, and let's chat about peppers, yucca, and all things growing. Love y'all like chicken!Note: Yucca is not the same as yuca (Cassava). The latter looks completely different and can be used as a root vegetable. Episode 2321 - On this Friday's show Vinnie Tortorich brings in Anna Vocino to review the basics of NSNG® for newcomers to the show, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/2024/04/basics-of-NSNG-epsiode-2321 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS A LITTLE INTRODUCTION This episode is to review the basics of NSNG for the new “Rowebies”. (2:00) That's the nickname given to people who have discovered NSNG® after listening to Vinnie on the Mike Rowe Podcast. It is not uncommon for people to have consultations with Vinnie to stay on track, even if they've been NSNG for a long time. Vinnie describes how he started NSNG. (17:15) Vinnie has been an ultra athlete for years, yet got leukemia. He describes what part of his lifestyle was like as an ultra-athlete. THE BASICS OF NSNG® They run down the list of what you can and should eat. (28:30) List of Healthy fats, meats, eggs, full-fat dairy, and so much more, and the benefits of each. This list is available in the NSNG e-book, available . Vinnie shares why you can over-consume the right things when beginning, as you are retraining your hormone responses. (47:00) They explain why CICO (Calorie in, Calorie out) is not effective. You can track macros and/or what you eat if you like, but it is unnecessary! You can be successful without logging everything, so it's easy. Some people come from a disordered eating or diet mentality, and logging every item can be negative. They chat further about ideal veggies to have. Anna shares ideas. (56:00) However, things like cauliflower crusts should be used with caution. Read the ingredients as they often use a lot of non-friendly fillers like Cassava flour and tapioca starch. Cassava, potatoes, and other tubers are starchy and behave in your system like sugars. They talk about condiments as well. (1:01:00) Anna reminds listeners to read the ingredients list on labels, not the nutritional panel. It's important to know the actual contents, not just the numbers on the panel. Vinnie and Anna advise newcomers to really give themselves time to acclimate and see results, especially if they have been metabolically broken for a long time. (1:11:00) They also talk about both natural and artificial sweeteners--both are bad! They also review various beverages, and why some are better than others. (1:18:00) PLUS... Vinnie reveals a Pure Coffee Club special Promo Code. (LISTEN FOR IT!) [the_ad id="20253"] PURCHASE BEYOND IMPOSSIBLE The documentary launched on January 11! Order it TODAY! As a society we have (rightly) spent soooo much time talking and thinking about SARS-CoV-2 but what about the billions of other viruses out there, most of which don't infect humans? This week evolutionary virologist Alvin Crespo talks about cassava mosaic begomoviruses which infect cassava plants, a food crop that is the main source of carbohydrates for the people of sub-Saharan Africa. We talk about where this virus came from, where all viruses may come from, and we also tackle topics related to 'parachute science', the scientific method and its limitations, and whether or not I am a generally ignorant person. It was fascinating learning about plant epidemics but sad to learn about the devastation they cause. However, as Alvin says during our conversation, we can learn a lot from these outbreaks which can hopefully prepare us for emergent plant viruses of the future.Alvin Crespo is a PhD candidate in the Ecology and Evolution program at Rutgers University in the Duffy lab. You can follow him on Twitter: @alvincrespo2 or read his published work on Google Scholar. Here are some links to things we mentioned in the episode:Alvin's research is funded by a n NSF Program called "PIRE: U.S.-East Africa Research and Education Partnership: Cassava mosaic disease - A paradigm for the evolution of insect-transmitted plant virus pathosystems".Here is the NSF award abstract and a list of the related publications to dateCollaborating institutes: North Carolina State University, North Carolina A&T, Rutgers University, Auburn University, Biosciences eastern and central Africa International Livestock Reasearch Institute (BecA-ILRI) Hub in Nairobi, Keny, Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI)- Mikocheni in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and JOMO Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) in Nairobi, Kenya. Here is a link to the phycologist mentioned from Burkina Faso, Dr. Bilassé Zongo: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Bilasse-ZongoAlso, fun fact: it is the 40th anniversary of the first sequenced cassava mosaic begomovirus! For more info on microbes and to follow updates of this podcast, find @couch_microscopy on Instagram, @CouchMicroscopy on Twitter, or visit www.couchmicroscopy.com/store for merch!Music is "Introducing Cosmic Space" by Elf Power and "Vorticella Dreams" by L. Thank you for donating these cassava chips, Dr. Anandan! These chips were thick, durable, and simple. This was our first time trying yuca cassava chips and we loved them! It's been a long month in the Barrett home and we're ready for Halloween! We didn't mention it in the episode, but Brodie's soccer team improved to 5-1 on the season. Great job, Team Fox! We're heading to November...holidays are around the corner already. We look forward to having more guests in studio through the end of the year.If you haven't already, throw us a follow on Instagram @championchip_podcast. Chip away, Chip Champions!
This episode is a loving meditation on Teaching. Departing from the words of The Prophet on the assertion that a Teacher's job is truly an exercise in guidance, mentorship and leadership into the threshold of our own mind. We then travel to the Colombian Amazon, to discover the communities that have thrived there for milennia, who in their knowledge of nature and coexistence with it, have so much to teach us all. We begin by learning about the cosmology and cultural wisdom of the Huitotos, the People of the Center, of Cassava and Tobacco, who in their daily doing are in fact, teaching a sustainable way of life.

episode 133 Sunset, Moonlight, Cassava & Community with Sophie Musoki of A Kitchen in Uganda Introduction Welcoming Sophie to the podcast today. She's speaking with us from Uganda, where she writes the blog A Kitchen in Uganda and hosts a podcast titled Our Food Stories. Sophie takes us with her to the communal gatherings she enjoyed by sunset and moonlight at the communal pestle, where women took turns pounding cassava, prepared dinner, and large extended families ate together in the moonlight. We'll learn from her all about the Casssva plant, Kabalagala bananas, and the pancakes her mother made and she sold to passersby for just a cent or two. After hearing these stories, it's easy to understand the urgency she feels to perserve her food memories - and to learn about the food traditions of fellow Ugandans - through her blog and podcast. Conversations with her parents have convinced Sophie that Ugandan's food heritage is under threat by the forces of technology, modernization, globalization, religion, and vestiges of colonization. Furthermore, Uganda is a country of tribes. The borders are abitrary (well, not quite arbitrary - she discusses how they were formed) and separate tribes from fellow tribe members while tossing together people groups with little culture or language in common. So, Sophie's second goal in starting her podcast was to learn more about the food cultures of different tribes within her own country. Sophie's voice is gentle and melodic and in this interview, she taught me many things in the same way - with gentleness and thoughtfulness. I'm so delighted to introduce her to you today.
