We stretched our tastes to find underappreciated movies from Rotten Tomatoes rankings between 10 and 19 percent. We think that The Boondocks Saints (1999), Saving Silverman (2001), and National Lampoon's Van Wilder (2002) all deserve more credit than they are given. This is one of those interviews I never even dreamed would happen. David Della Rocco, the actor who played the pivotal role as Rocco on the Boondocks Saints. If you're a fan of the movie, you are going to love what David has to say about the film. But David is an amazing guy with a unique perspective on the entertainment industry that I really enjoy. People always say this, be he truly is one of the nicest guys I think I've ever met. We had a blast with David and hope you all have just as much fun listening as we had talking with David. This week is on the cult classic The Boondock Saints, hopefully you have seen this movie by now, its been out for over 20 years. If you haven't seen it, the synopsis is... Tired of the crime overrunning the streets of Boston, Irish Catholic twin brothers Conner (Sean Patrick Flanery) and Murphy (Norman Reedus) are inspired by their faith to cleanse their hometown of evil with their own brand of zealous vigilante justice. As they hunt down and kill one notorious gangster after another, they become controversial folk heroes in the community. But Paul Smecker (Willem Dafoe), an eccentric FBI agent, is fast closing in on their blood-soaked trail. "And shepherds we shall be. For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand. That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee. And Teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Fili, et Spiritus Sancti." The Boondocks Saints Cocktail (greatcocktailrecipes.net): 1 oz. Rum 4 oz. Tequila 2 oz. Vodka 1.5 oz. Triple Sec 2 oz. Lemon Juice 1 Tbsp Sugar Top with Soda Water Drinking Game (boondocksaints.com): Mandatory Drinks Drink whenever: You see simul-action. This could be two people simultaneously lighting cigarettes, putting on shirts, or putting bullets through someone's eye-holes. There is a religious reference. For example, this whole movie. You notice blatant ethnic stereotyping. Or, we're mistaken, in which case drink whenever you learn something new about a culture. Someone speaks in a different language. When homeschooling your children, it's important that they learn Latin, Italian, and how to double-tap bad guys. You hear three or more f-words in a phrase or sentence. Something like “Fuckin' — What the fuckin'. Fuck. Who the fuck fucked this fucking… How did you two fucking fucks…?” Rocco freaks out. You could argue that drinking should occur every time Rocco's on screen, but then your liver would liquefy and we'd feel bad. Willem's a total DICK. Possibly the greatest role of his — nay, anyone's — career, nobody pulls off a preening, self-centered, brilliant, cross-dressing, homophobic, onion bagel-loving, gay FBI agent better than Willem. Bonus Drinks WATERFALL whenever Agent Smecker goes into his detect-o-trance to classical music. FINISH YOUR BEER when a certain sweaty, disheveled someone yells “AAAAARRGHH!! There was a FIREFIGHT!!” and then empties his clip into the middle of the suburbs. FINISH YOUR BEER once you see Willem in drag, a.k.a., some “primo box.” If that's primo, what's that guy used to?? As always, drink responsibly and with friends, drinking with others is always more fun. Join us each week as Ben Begley and Jesse McIntosh breakdown your favorite films, from the classics to the yet to be seen; it’s all here under one banner… GUILTY MOVIE PLEASURES! This week, Jesse and Ben talk about The Boondocks Saints (1999)! The Boondock Saints is a 1999 American crime film written and directed by Troy Duffy, and produced by Chris Brinker. The film stars Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus as fraternal twins, Connor and Murphy MacManus, who become vigilantes after killing two members of the Russian Mafia in self-defense. After both experience an epiphany, the brothers, together with their friend "Funny Man" (David Della Rocco), set out to rid their home city of Boston, Massachusetts of crime and evil, all while being pursued by FBI Agent Paul Smecker (W --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
A bartender named Troy Duffy once saw a drug dealer take money from a corpse. His response? To write a movie called “The Boondock Saints.” This film came out in 1999 and was in theaters for about five days. It then was released on DVD, where, over the course of the next few years, it found itself in the prized film collection of many bros throughout the United States. These bros spread the word, one set of bench press at a time, and soon enough, The Boondocks Saints had become a cultural phenomenon. In this episode of General Snobbery, Matt and Sean take a look back at this movie, a movie that was beloved by many dudes at their all-boys Catholic High School, including, much to their regret, themselves. Yes, Matt and Sean, those endeavoring on the path of the #TrueSnob, once loved The Boondocks Saints. They loved it so much, in fact, that upon this 2016 viewing of a film that should never be watched again by anyone, they could recall what was to come, scene by scene, line by line. Nevertheless, as wisdom comes with age and experience, so transformations in one’s viewing of a film occur. With great thanks to the Lord Almighty, Matt and Sean discovered that this film is, in fact, incredibly bad. At times, it’s hilariously bad. The most ridiculous part about it is that it clearly thinks it’s awesome. It wants you, the viewer, to believe that it’s saying something profound about existence, making a big moral stand on evil and corruption in the contemporary world. What it’s really about is two flat Irish characters deciding to kill bad guys. If it weren’t for Willem Defoe… well, actually, even he couldn’t save this godawful film. Nevertheless, due to its total badness, The Boondocks Saints provided one of the most laugh-filled snobs yet, one of those sacred snobs where Sean and Matt sat across from one another, in the same room, cultivating the limitless snobbery in a singular space. We hope you enjoy, listener, as they parse through their past, work through the guilt of once having liked this movie, and enter a place of calm and peace that snobbery alone may yield. May be all be shepherds against the existence of this atrocious movie.
The Criterion Collection, the last vestige of truly collectible DVD and Blu-Ray movies in existence. These are well produced, fancy pants editions of important and interesting films for the discerning film lover. We continue our journey through Jim's collection of movies with... Harold and Maude Spine Number: 608 Director: Hal Ashby Genre: Comedy Making a movie, even a bad one, is an almost impossible task to undertake. So many things have to line up just to get a go ahead, and once you get going so many little things can go wrong that every day becomes, essentially, an uphill battle. So movies that are great, truly great, are rare and magical things. But what about perfect movies? I mean, is it possible for a movie to be perfect? The short answer is, yes. It is possible for a movie to be perfect. So many things have to go right for this to happen, but it is possible. These things do exist, there just aren't many of them. Well... this week, we discuss a perfect movie. Harold and Maude. Damn. Clarkson summed this up perfectly several years ago. "I don't know anyone who doesn't like 'Harold and Maude, and I don't want to." Harold and Maude a simple, unconventional love story between a young man with no moorings or place in the world who can only find some sort of connection by faking elaborate suicides for his mother's "benefit," and attending the funerals of strangers. On the surface, he has everything. He's from a VERY rich family and doesn't seem to have a care in the world. But, under that surface he is a lonely and isolated. Enter Maude. The exact opposite. An older woman with out a lot of material possessions, but with an unending love and enthusiasm for life. We follow their friendship over the course of one week, and see how much of an impact the right person can have at the right time in someones life. There are so many ways this movie could go wrong, but at every point it stays the course. Change any aspect of it, and it falls apart. One change in casting, one song removed or replaced, one scene longer or shorter and this movie might not work. But, as it stands, everything about it is perfect. The cast could not be better, the visual aesthetics are flawless (and Wes Anderson should be paying royalties to this movie), the music is superb... everything is perfect. So, join us for a discussion that is almost completely on topic! Yes, we do discuss the cult film phenomenon and spend a bit of time talking about Highlander and The Boondocks Saints, but aside from that... we are all about Harold and Maude. Next week, a new year begins with... Spine number 627: The Game Also, check this out. The Life Masters is now it's own show with its own site and own dedicated feed.
