Steven Mills has reached a crossroads. His wife and son have left, and they may not return. Which leaves him determined to find out what happened to his own father, a brilliant, charismatic professor who disappeared in 1984 when Steve was twelve, on a wave of ignominy. As Steve drives up the coast of California, seeking out his father's friends, family members, and former colleagues, the novel offers us tantalizing glimpses into Steve's childhood—his parents' legendary pool parties, the black-and-white films on the backyard projector, secrets shared with his closest friend. Each conversation in the present reveals another layer of his father's past, another insight into his disappearance. Yet with every revelation, his father becomes more difficult to recognize. And, with every insight, Steve must confront truths about his own life.Rich in atmosphere, and with a stunningly sure-footed emotional compass, The Imagined Life: A Novel (Knopf, 2025) is a probing, nostalgic novel about the impossibility of understanding one's parents, about first loves and failures, about lost innocence, about the unbreakable bonds between a father and a son. Andrew Porter is the author of the short story collections The Disappeared and The Theory of Light and Matter and a previous novel, In Between Days. A graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, he has received a Pushcart Prize, a James Michener/Copernicus Fellowship, and the Flannery O'Connor Award for short fiction. His work has appeared in One Story, Ploughshares, American Short Fiction, Narrative, and elsewhere. Andrew Porter is the author of two story collections, The Disappeared and The Theory of Light and Matter. He's also the author of the novel In Between Days. His latest, out this month, is The Imagined Life and it treads on some familiar territory as the others. Andrew joins Marrie Stone to talk about it. His work has been compared to Richard Yates and John Cheever. He talks about those influences and his hyper-focus on the domestic realm. He also talks about the impacts his former professor, Marilynne Robinson, has on his work. They talk about writerly choices — point of view, structure, revision, and character development. And they discuss larger themes of men, boys, marriage, and sexuality in today's culture and how literature reflects those struggles. We should've talked about Grant Hart as well as Bob Mould. It is probably noticeable anyway, but we want to mention that two separate parts of "Running Up That Hill," "In Between Days," "Primitive Painters," and "She Sells Sanctuary" were grafted together for the clips we played.
Existem histórias e historinhas. Novelas e contos. Esse é o Resuminho do Som, e hoje eu vou contar pra vocês um pouco dos sucessos In-Between Days, do The Cure, Hold me Now do Thompson Twins e Somebody's Watching Me, do Rockwell. Scott Strode, sober for over 25 years, is the Executive Director of The Phoenix, a transformational nonprofit he founded in 2006. The Phoenix harnesses the power of connection to ignite a movement that's changing how society looks at addiction and recovery. The Phoenix provides free programs both in-person and virtually, across the globe, including yoga, climbing, music, CrossFit, art, and more. The only cost to participate is 48 hours of sobriety. Scott says, “It might be the activity that brings someone in, but it's the community of sober friendships that keeps them coming back.” This spark of hope for recovery, that Scott himself experienced, has continued to grow and help thousands rise from addiction. Not limited to those in recovery, The Phoenix movement is for anyone who has been impacted by substance use disorder — because the solution to the addiction crisis lives in all of us. This is our movement! To learn more, or to connect with our community, volunteer, or donate, please go to thephoenix.org. The Phoenix is a national sober active community that provides free, active, and meaningful programming—ranging from yoga and rock climbing to CrossFit and art—to individuals impacted by substance use. The Phoenix fosters a welcoming and safe community where participants, with a minimum of 48 hours of sobriety, can heal and grow together. The organization has achieved remarkable results: 83% of members report sustained sobriety after three months of participation. In 2022, The Phoenix realized a gap in recovery support in the music industry despite the fact that addiction disproportionately affects the music industry – 56% of music industry professionals cite problematic substance use (Source: Tulane University School of Social Work 2022), so they partnered with Stand Together Music and Stand Together Foundation to launch 1 Million Strong—an impact initiative to support one million people impacted by substance use, starting in the music industry. Over the past year, 1MS has hosted sober-supportive retreats at over a dozen renowned music festivals, supporting hundreds of thousands of fans. Positioned strategically amid the festival's heart, these retreats offer a VIP-like experience with mocktails, The Phoenix programming (like guided meditations and yoga) and a supportive atmosphere to meet other likeminded people. The impact of these events are undeniable: Since the launch of 1MS in September 2022, The Phoenix has had nearly 140,000 new members join the community. We're not slowing down the tempo – 1 Million Strong will be hosting sober-supportive retreats at In Between Days, Park City Song Sumit, Bourbon & Beyond, Telluride Blues & Brews, Louder than Life, and Camp Flog Gnaw between now and the end of the year and planning for a festival-filled 2024! The Phoenix and 1 Million Strong are transforming how America approaches addiction, so those in recovery can go from surviving to truly living. Scott's personal story and work with The Phoenix and 1 Million Strong could offer your listeners a fresh perspective on the power of connection in overcoming addiction. thephoenix.org 1millionstrong.com The Phoenix - A Sober Community (app) HELP SUPPORT OUR FIGHT AGAINST ADDICTION. Shania Twain——Not Just A Girl结尾 Tamara——Proud制作团队监制:Peter Cat统筹:王诗淼策划:王诗淼剪辑:黄哲成编辑:王诗淼

Welcome to Music You're Missing's Music Industry Experts, a special series of 1:1 interviews with the most influential thought leaders in the music industry. In an exclusive interview with host Brendan Jeannetti, Alex Magleby, co-founder and CEO of the New England Free Jacks and founder of the In Between Days Music Festival, shared his insights on using musical performances to grow the audience for the New England Free Jacks, the founding of the In Between Days Festival, and the significance of fostering community. The Birth of the New England Free JacksBefore diving into the exciting world of the In Between Days Music Festival, Alex Magleby reflects on the origins of the New England Free Jacks. Founded in 2018, the professional rugby team was driven by a desire to build community through sports and music. Magleby's passion for rugby, having been involved with the sport for much of his life, led him to envision a platform where people could come together, regardless of age or background, to enjoy a visceral and emotional game.Creating Community Through Rugby and MusicMagleby emphasizes the importance of building an audience and creating a compelling experience. Rugby, being relatively unfamiliar to many in the United States, posed a challenge in terms of exposure. However, Magleby's team embarked on a journey to share the sport's magic with people, leading them to fall in love with rugby and become part of the community. By combining rugby matches with live music performances, the New England Free Jacks revolutionized the sports entertainment landscape and have built a sustainable fan base.In Between Days Music FestivalIn Between Days Music Festival was conceived as a natural extension of the New England Free Jacks' vision to bring the community together. Magleby explains that the festival's name captures the feeling of being in an in-between space, not fully in summer but not yet in fall, where people can come together and celebrate. The festival's unique incorporation of music with art, vintage, and local vendors create a compelling and immersive experience for attendees.Curating the Festival LineupMagleby sheds light on the meticulous curation process for the festival's musical acts. The team strives to include a diverse set of artists that align thematically with the indie vibe. The focus on local and independent artists allows the festival to support up-and-coming talents and provide them with exposure. Magleby encourages artists to reach out, share their music, and build relationships with festival organizers to increase their chances of being part of the lineup.Expanding the In Between Days: A Growth MindsetThe success of the inaugural In Between Days Music Festival laid the groundwork for expansion. While taking care not to grow too big too fast, Magleby envisions future editions of the festival featuring more days and opportunities for local artists and the community. The ultimate goal is to provide more people with the chance to experience the festival's magic and foster a sense of togetherness.A Transparent Experience: Eliminating Ticket FeesOne notable aspect of the festival is the decision to eliminate ticket fees, ensuring transparency and providing a straightforward experience for attendees. Magleby believes that such openness fosters trust between the festival and its audience, enhancing the overall sense of community. In conclusion, Alex Magleby's vision for the In Between Days Music Festival goes beyond just a music event. It represents a powerful concept of community building through shared experiences and accessible opportunities. As the festival continues to evolve and grow, its core values of inclusivity and celebration of diverse talent will remain at the heart of the In Between Days experience.FOLLOW ALEX MAGLEBY: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexmagleby/FOLLOW IN BETWEEN DAYS MUSIC FESTIVAL:https://www.instagram.com/inbetweendaysfestival/FOLLOW MUSIC YOU'RE MISSING:https://www.musicyouremissing.org/FOLLOW BRENDAN JEANNETTI: https://www.instagram.com/brendanjeannetti/https://www.linkedin.com/in/brendanjeannetti/

A husband and wife hear a mysterious bump in the night. A father mourns the closeness he has lost with his son. A friendship with a married couple turns into a dangerous codependency. With gorgeous sensitivity, assurance, and a propulsive sense of menace, these stories center on disappearances both literal and figurative--lives and loves that are cut short, the vanishing of one's youthful self. From San Antonio to Austin, from the clamor of a crowded restaurant to the cigarette at a lonely kitchen table, Andrew Porter captures each of these relationships mid-flight, every individual life punctuated by loss and beauty and need. The Disappeared (Knopf, 2023) reaffirms the undeniable artistry of a contemporary master of the form. From San Antonio to Austin, from the clamor of a crowded restaurant to the cigarette at a lonely kitchen table, Andrew Porter captures each of these relationships mid-flight, every individual life punctuated by loss and beauty and need. durée : 00:04:16 - Tubes N' Co - par : Rebecca Manzoni, Ilinca Negulesco - La chanson "In between days" est écrite et composée par Robert Smith et c'est le premier extrait de l'album "The Head on the Door".

We listen back to a conversation with Oregon native Teva Harrison. In her memoir “In-Between Days,” she blended her drawings and graphics with prose to tell the story of her stage 4 breast cancer diagnosis at age 37, her subsequent treatment, and her struggle to find meaning and joy in her day-to-day life. We spoke with Harrison in 2017. She died over the weekend at the age of 42.

Episode 37: The Cure - The Head on the Door (1985) Part 1 After 36 episodes, Brian and Sarah decide it's finally time to discuss one of alternative rock's most long-lived and influential bands, The Cure. The album they select is the sixth release from Robert Smith and company, 1985's "The Head on the Door." And, they've brought in friend of the show and guest co-host Colby Zell to join in the discussion, since this album is near and dear to him as well. A lengthy and lively conversation ensues! Part 1: Album History "The Head on the Door" is the first album by what many consider to be the classic Cure lineup. Brian provides us with details on how this incarnation of the band came to be, as well as what other things Robert Smith had going on in the time immediately beforehand. Sarah shares the release and chart information for the album, explains where the album title came from, and also prompts an interesting and somewhat humorous discussion about the album cover art. Part 2: Personal History Colby explains how he came to acquire "The Head on the Door" and expresses his frustration in being unable to get other friends interested in The Cure at the time. Brian, ever the rebel, reveals how he engaged in an activity forbidden by his parents in order to obtain his copy of the cassette. Sarah says her first exposure to The Cure came via a mixtape, which contained some song titles that caused her to raise her eyebrows. Part 3: Track by Track The trio finally get down to the business of exploring the tracks on side one of the album. The Cure is hailed by many as goth-rock pioneers, but our hosts encounter a variety of musical styles and influences as they progress through the songs. Brian discloses a traumatic experience he had involving the video for the first single, to which Colby provides no sympathy. Robert Smith's unique voice is discussed, with Sarah mentioning an easily-won argument she had in college about that topic. Colby provides tips for binge drinking on a budget in Portugal. Also covered are such diverse topics as misheard lyrics, habitual lying, New Order, and Epcot Center. "I felt that I'd taken the easy road. Never one to set up camp in regret, I found myself face to face with giant, seemingly insurmountable, regret. I suddenly realized I had been wasting time." In this CreativeMornings/Toronto talk from December 2015, writer and artist Teva Harrison shares with us the lessons she's learned since being diagnosed with metastatic cancer. Among her biggest realization is the concept of time and how to seize it. Since her diagnosis, Teva has written and illustrated the critically acclaimed graphic memoir, In-Between Days, about her experience living with cancer. Honest and pragmatic, this talk inspires us to stop waiting and start living for today. This episode was made possible by our friends at MailChimp and InVision.

An interview with SO YONG KIM the director of TREELESS MOUNTAIN. When their mother needs to leave in order to find their estranged father, seven-year-old Jin and her younger siste, Bin, are left to live with their Big Aunt for the summer. With only a small piggy bank and their mother's promise to return when it is full, the two young girls are forced to acclimate to changes in their family life. Counting the days, and the coins, the two bright-eyed young girls eagerly anticipate their mother's homecoming. But when the bank fills up, and with their mother still not back, Big Aunt decides that she can no longer tend to the children. Taken to live on their grandparent's farm, it is here that Jin comes to learn the importance of familybonds in this beautiful, meditative, and thought-provoking second feature from So Yong Kim, the acclaimed director of IN BETWEEN DAYS.
Colin Marshall talks to So Yong Kim, director of In Between Days, winner of the 2006 Sundance Film Festival’s Special Jury Prize for Independent Vision, and more recently Treeless Mountain, which is now available on DVD. The story of two very young sisters in Seoul left with their distant aunt while their mother searches for their absent father, the film belongs solidly to the realist tradition while evoking the scale, perspective and feel of childhood. The New York Times‘ A.O. Scott calls Treeless Mountain one of the “vital, urgent and timely” vanguard members of the new genre of “neo-neorealism.”

The Best Radio You Have Never Heard Podcast - Music For People Who Are Serious About Music
Liberated from the vault. Please Return To Your Seats was recorded as I watched the 25th Anniversary broadcast documentary of the infamous Disco Demolition at Chicago's Comiskey Park in 1979. The title is derived from the hilarity of the text on the scoreboard urging about 10,000 maniacs to "please return to their seats" I was turned away from "Sox Park" about a block away by Chicago's Finest on horseback dressed in their classic baby powder blue riot gear that night. Baby blue has never looked so scary. Although this podcast was inspired by those moments in title and intro only, contained in its grooves are classic "Best Radio You Have Never Heard" tracks . . . 1. The Boy In The Bubble (Remix) - Paul Simon 2. Pride (in The Name Of Love) (live) - U2 3. Bad (live) - U2 4. It's My Life (remix) - Talk Talk 5. In Between Days (extended 12") - The Cure 6. Aladdin Sane - David Bowie 7. Hungry Like A Wolf (unplugged) - Duran Duran 8. The Beautiful People - Marilyn Manson 9. Hot With Fleas (remix) - Severed Heads 10. Slither - Velvet Revolver 11. Seattle - Public Image Ltd 12. Soul Survivor - Rolling Stones 13. Talk To Ya Later - The Tubes 14. The Way You Are - Tears For Fears 15. Twin Peaks - Angelo Badalamenti
