Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"I liked the busker in the original and thus wanted to create some sort of loop of the guitar and voice and put some soft beats behind this. That was the basic idea of the track before I started to make it. Whilst attempting to do this, I used other elements of the field recording coming in and out in various places. It felt however like it needed more ideas.   I therefore used a sample of some modular synth sounds (played by IKJoyce - with his permission - IKJoyce is a musician that I am currently collaborating with) and added some swooshing synth noises myself.   "I felt also it needed a voice at the start to help frame the piece. I contacted my Italian friend Marco Alessi who runs Naviar Records and he agreed to record the voice you can hear at the start of the piece." Piece by Audio Obscura as part of The Orange Garden project by Cities and Memory, in which multiple artists create a new composition using the same original field recording as source material and inspiration - see the whole project at http://www.citiesandmemory.com/orangegarden

In 1986, he along with Eazy-E, Ice Cube and DJ Yella formed the local gangsta rap group N.W.A. (Niggaz for Life). N.W.A worked on the themes of urban crime and gang lifestyle. Their lyrics were harsh and overt, and brought to mainstream America the slice of ‘real’ life on streets. N.W.A’s debutant studio album, ‘Straight Outta Compton’ met with blockbuster success, selling more than 2 million copies. Its single, ‘Fuck Tha Police’ explored the tension between black youth and police officials. In 1991, the group released its second album, ‘Efil4zaggin’ before disbanding. In 1991, he co-founded Death Row Records with Sue Knight. In 1992, he released his first single, which served as the title track for the film ‘Deep Cover’. The single featured the debut of rapper Snoop Dogg as well. 132. In 1993, Dre made the big leap of his career with his maiden album, ‘The Chronic’. Its singles, ‘Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang’, ‘Let Me Ride’, ‘Fuck with Dre Day’ created a revolution in the music industry, making the album a cultural phenomenon. The album with its G-funk sound dominated the hip hop music for the early 1990s.Following success as a rapper, he switched to being a producer. He produced Snoop Dogg’s debut album, ‘Doggystyle’, Tupac Shakur’s work, ‘All Eyez on Me’ and several film songs. 133. In 1996, following contractual dispute, he left Death Row Records for good. This week, Charlie talks to Lauv, the singer, songwriter and producer behind unfailingly catchy tracks such as “Mean It” and “I Like Me Better.” Lauv’s a master at making the sad feel fun—masking themes of anxiety and betrayal with upbeat, percussive production. He even does a bit of the opposite, too, by infusing his joyful songs with vulnerability and emotional complexity. You’ll soon be able to hear all of that and more on his debut studio album, ~how I’m feeling~, out later this week. Our conversation explores Lauv’s song-making process and touches on everything from T Swift (Lauv counts himself a fan), “mind” rhymes, and the particular nuances of loneliness in the internet age. Today’s episode also features the voices of some of our wonderful listeners--special thanks to Katy, Sadie, Robert, Genevieve, Keen and everyone else who wrote in with questions for Lauv. Songs Discussed: Lauv with Anne-Marie - fuck, i'm lonely Lauv & LANY - Mean It Lauv - I Like Me Better Lauv & Troye Sivan - i’m so tired... We attempt to put on our film critics caps and watch the 1949 classic, "The Heiress" with actual film buff, Nick from St. Paul Filmcast. Movie Moral to the Story: Based on this movie and countless other movies, it is easier to love a pretty person than and ugly person. Our Moral to the Story: Awkward can be beautiful. Other Fun Topics Discussed: Get to Know Us: What moving setting would we live in? Nick would definitely not live in the DC Universe. He might choose living in Middle Earth but we are all unclear as to whether they have indoor plumbing. Aragorn is like 150! More on Lord of the Rings: Mallory lost most her Elvish language skills. I guess it is true if you don't use it, you lose it. Tamu said she would live in a Nora Ephron movie, but really she meant Nancy Meyers. Who wouldn't want to live in Meryl Streep's "It's Complicated" house? Mallory would live in a musical. None of us opted for living in a period piece or the Marvel Universe. Well, maybe Wakanda. Tamu notices Montgomery Clift's bumper curls. Catherine's dad was a really good doctor and gave himself a spot on diagnosis and prognosis with just a stethoscope! Olivia de Havilland and her sister Joan Fontaine had a wicked sibling rivalry. Move over Spinster, there's a new word in town: Thornback - an unmarried woman over age 26. Nick actually READ Game of Thrones. Nick explains the tricks of back and white movies. Turns out Mallory has an ally in the Love Actually debate. Too bad Nick missed that episode. Morris' unromantic song, "Plaisir d'amour. Lyrics are: The joy of love lasts but a moment. The pain of love lasts all the life long. SWOON! Copyright Infringement: Elvis probs stole the melody of "Can't Help Falling in Love with You" from that awesome French "love" song. #WePodcastLikeThis: It was late, but we remembered. Finally breathing, what is this feeling? 爵士老歌也是《银翼杀手》电影系列的特点,老版本的《One More Kiss, Dear》和新版本的《One for My Baby》,以及断断续续出现在地下舞厅那段戏的猫王名曲《Can't Help Falling in Love》。 。

This is a special episode recorded during a road trip with my father, Glen Metts, across the heartland of the United States. From an early age, Dad influenced my love of music by sharing his own. That's how I came to grow up listening to Elvis Presley. Despite being called the King of Rock and Roll, this Southern singer also recorded hits in every kind of music that preceded and informed rock music, including country, blues, folk, and even gospel. Dad lived through the entire career of Elvis and even saw him perform in person, so you'll get a lot of context for how this music took over America and created the legend of Elvis, arguably the most popular musician of the 20th century. 1. In this week's Soul Music Marianne Faithfull recalls the French Love song which went on to inspire Elvis's 60's hit, 'I Can't Help Falling in Love with You'. 'Plaisir d'Amour' is the classical French love song which somehow found its way through 18th century orchestration (Hector Berlioz) and 1960's folk revival, to an unexpected re-invention into the Elvis hit 'I Can't' Help Falling in Love with You'. It's been recorded by Marianne Faithfull and busked on the streets of Paris by 'The Gruffalo' author Julia Donaldson. It has also touched the lives of former American Military Academy Freshman Andrew Scott and recently married couple Henry (76) and Christine Wallace (82) who fell in love on a moonlit New Year's Eve. Written in 1784 by Jean-Paul-Égide Martini, Plaisir d'Amour muses on the pleasures and pains of love and was inspired by a poem which appears in Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian's novel 'Célestine'. For 17 year old Marianne Faithfull it was a song of innocence, recorded in a tiny booth in the old Decca studios whilst happily pregnant with her first child. Meanwhile, author Julia Donaldson and husband Malcolm busked it on the streets of Paris. It was the summer of 1969 and police hid in alleyways, still fearful of students following the 1968 riots. As the classical French melody was adopted by Elvis and transformed into 'I Can't Help Falling in Love with You', West Point Military Academy Freshman Andrew Scott learnt to pick it's tune on guitar. It's a song that went on to win the heart of his wife of now 20 years. For Henry and Christine Wallace, it summed everything up "It was what I was looking for, someone to share my life and the words 'take my whole life too was in tune with what I wanted'.
