What does a true commitment to science really look like? Following on from last week's discussion about seeking deep truths hidden in disconcerting places, this week's episode centres on Mike Cahill's 2014 film, 'I Origins', to contemplate the surprisingly vast purview of scientific enquiry. We also briefly discuss: Wild Strawberries (1957) d. Ingmar Bergman White Noise (2022) d. Comment s'y prendrait-on ?
It is not a battle, but rather a duet of science and religion through the connection of the eye, of the soul and of what happens after it leave our bodies. The story of I Origins filters these questions through one man's journey, through his facts, his instincts, and then through his connection of emotion. It is showing the man behind the mask of science, and how, through a personal adventure, some things cannot be explained so easily; leaving room for more questions, and only through a personal experience, can determine his own choice of believing what is shown to him or to ignore the signs. We can interpret much from his film, leaving room for the choice to believe and to have faith in our convictions. Copyright to Two Takes
What happens when we die? That is the real question. And within the film I Origins, latching unto the understanding of reincarnation through Hindu beliefs, it is the loss of each person that makes it harder to let go. We move on, but through Ian's shame of still feeling attracted to Sofi, even seven years after her death, shows that our minds attach ourselves to this hopelessness of feelings and emotions. There is a connection in life. So why can there not be a connection through death and rebirth? The concept of the mind, the soul, outside of the physical realm of our bodies, makes us question that there is surely more to life than this. The cycle of consequences, of Ian's actions, of Sofi's inactions, bring forth how connection can go further than our bodily selves. And in the film, it is represented beautifully through the eyes.

Writer-Director Mike Cahill credits his early fascination with filmmaking to the Fisher-Price Pixelvision, better known as the PXL-2000, a black-and-white toy camcorder from the late 1980s. “I totally loved it,” he joked. “It was my favorite toy of all time. No one was teaching me how movies or film, or how the medium worked, but I was discovering you hold down the button, it records, and you let go, and it stops recording. Then, there’s a natural edit to the way it works.” Describing this early experience as “exhilarating,” Cahill said that even though he took many different paths in his life, he always returned to filmmaking. Clearly, the passion has paid off. Cahill is best known for his work as a writer/director on the documentary Boxers and Ballerinas, and films like Another Earth, I Origins, and Bliss. His latest feature, Bliss, stars Owen Wilson and Salma Hayek. The description for the Amazon release reads, “ A mind-bending love story following Greg who, after recently being divorced and then fired, meets the mysterious Isabel, a woman living on the streets and convinced that the polluted, broken world around them is a computer simulation.” In this interview, the writer-director discusses film as a visual language, high-concept ideas about second chances, how filmmaking is like catching an exotic animal, and how he chooses to chase inspiration.
In DXP #290 we discuss the film I Origins and its implications for our (ongoing) debate about science vs. spirituality (as in, is a purely scientific worldview reductionistic? Is there an afterlife?). We talk a bit about the Netflix series Narcos: Mexico, as well as other media we’ve been consuming lately. We then turn our attention back to the Proust Questionnaire, delving into such topics as our most treasured possessions, our lowest depth of misery, and what we most value in one another (awww, right?).
Oyez oyez amis Moldus. « Marshall !!! » : Référence a How I Met Your Mother.
Blake FarberDirector / Film Maker and Guitarist of Olde Yorke http://blakefarber.com/Recorded 3/20/19 at the Eliot Hotel in Boston, MA in snow storm. Blake had just flew in from Singapore the nigh before, gave a talk the Berkley college of music, and then was just about to fly back to New York. What we talk about: Blake played guitar in Olde York. Played Europe, Japan, all over the states. Always lived in Manhattan. Born and Raised. One of Blake’s first show was Youth Brigade at CBGBs. How the closing of CBGBs marked a demarcation of a changing New York. Is New York the center of the world? Blake has been to 42 countries, his base is New York as the world and the diversity is there. Blake went to LA in 2002-2003. Dropped out of LA. Wrote a film script at 16, guidance counselor told him he would be working at IBM soon…a discouraged Blake left and went to work on movie sets as a gripper and making his own movies with friends in LA. Decided to go back to NYC. That was his “film school.” At age 17, got a fake ID on St. Mark’s place (Punk)…met some older dudes in a bar, started old yorke with his brother on drums. That led to tour but decided to make music videos to promote his band his tour. From there, networking through hardcore and punk to shoot music videos. When the DSLR world came out (Digital single-lens reflex camera), the technology allowed for easy travel and to make high quality videos. How did Blake made this life: -Networking / Travel. Invested in trips. -Made a portfolio-“Being cool”…attitude helps -Ingenuity-DIY Ethos. Blake’s two most ‘punk’ things he ever done: -Got fired / kicked out from MTV-Gave a talk / guest lecture at Harvard…Blake is a high school drop out. Go to school / university because you want to, not because you feel like you need to. I Origins, 2014. Movie quote: “To me, the best thing about living like a lab rat is that sometimes, really rare times, you actually discover something.” Directing Beyonce’s “Countdown” music video in 2011. https://youtu.be/2XY3AvVgDnsMTV in Times square and the dentist appointment. Shooting a Kotex commercial in Bangkok on Christmas day.https://vimeo.com/284929001A lot of recent jobs have been in commercials in Asia recently (at least once or twice a year). Ad agency goes to a production company and then they go to a director. How do you shoot on location in Asia when you live in New York? Filming in Singapore airport. Learning photography by trial and error and visual cues. Director cuts vs. what is actually released. Always shoot extra film in digital. A minute long commercial is at least a two to three day shoot with at least three different locations.Directing and filming the Oppo RealMe commercial in New York.https://vimeo.com/29538957…in only two days. How commercials these days are mini movies. Working on directing his first full length film. The curse of being self critical and its importance.

On this episode, Maria and Meghan are back (and better?) than ever after a weekend covering the U.S. Nationals tournament in Richmond, Virginia! Enjoy their sleep-deprived states as they walk you through what's new with Standard (Maria loves those vamps!), how the Ixalan draft format is evolving (Meghan loves those treasures!), and what to expect when the world's best meet at the World Magic Cup this winter. OH! Did we fail to mention that this show goes off the rails in a pretty major way? Well, it does. I sure hope you like long, involved discussions about barely relevant tv shows and movies because...let's just say, you're gonna get it. The Nerds put on their critic hats once again to take a long… long look at the 2014 film I Origins. A film which the director stated they went to crazy lengths to get the science right. Making such a bold statement has opened the doors for arseholes like us to step in and point […]

This is a long one and our first episode it's not our normal arrangement. We take a look back at our favourite films for 2014. In the latest Talkhouse Film podcast, I Origins writer-director Mike Cahill and True Detective director Cary Fukunaga are in conversation. Cahill makes emotionally acute sci-fi movies that ask big cosmic questions, while Fukunaga's work is darker and grounded in an often bleak reality; although their filmmaking styles couldn't be more different, the two have been good friends for years. Their wonderfully wide-ranging conversation here takes in everything from science to storytelling, with some gripping real-life stories of ghosts and the unexplained in there too.
