Have you ever considered that your negative emotions about change could be your greatest superpower instead of your biggest obstacle? Well, today, I sit down with keynote speaker Cassandra Worthy to explore how we can transform our emotional response to change into fuel for growth and innovation.  After years as a chemical engineer in corporate America, Cassandra discovered her calling was helping others navigate change by harnessing their emotions rather than suppressing them. Cassandra breaks down her "Change Enthusiasm" framework, explaining how we can move from simply feeling emotions to transforming them into productive energy.  We also discuss the misconception of resilience - it's not about pushing through exhaustion, but rather about strategic recovery and reflection. If you are ready to transform how you approach change management, listen to the full episode and download a free chapter of Cassandra's book so you can begin your journey to becoming a Change Enthusiast! You might suppress your emotions when you walk through the door at work. But your colleagues can still feel them. Author Cassandra Worthy explains how to transform negative thoughts into positive ones. Cassandra Worthy, the author of Change Enthusiasm: How to Harness the Power of Emotion for Leadership and Success, believes that emotions can have a uniquely strong influence on our personal and professional lives. According to Worthy, emotions don't turn off when we walk into a business setting or turn on our laptops, and we can catch the emotions of those around us, both positive and negative. This phenomenon is called emotional contagion, and it can have a significant impact on our mood and productivity. Worthy suggests that suppressing emotions can lead to physical ailments and that it's important to acknowledge and transform them instead of ignoring them. Emotions can be transferred, transformed, or conserved, and by becoming more self-aware of our emotions, we can transform negative thoughts into positive ones. This transformation can help us reach our goals and fuel our personal evolution. chapters: 0:00 Emotional contagion at work 1:02 5 ‘signal emotions' we suppress: Fear, frustration, anger, anxiety, grief 2:16 Can physics help? Cassandra Worthy is the founder and CEO of Change Enthusiasm Global, a well-respected Leadership Development and Consulting company. Early in Cassandra's career, when her company was in the aftermath of a $5B acquisition, she almost quit. Fueled by frustration and stress, Cassandra was on the precipice of walking out of the office and never coming back. Had she done so, she would have become another statistic. Yet another African-American female departed from a STEM-driven industry. Top talent voluntarily resigns during a time of significant organizational shift. Another change victim.    Instead, Cassandra woke up one day and decided to view those feelings as a signal that she was sitting in a moment of opportunity. An opportunity to transform that chemistry, that feeling into something better. To choose every day to do something, say something, and behave in some way that would move the needle of her work experience towards a better feeling. Cassandra didn't know it at the time, but she was cultivating a teachable strategy to inspire anyone to become enthusiastic about change and to find their unique power of resilience during turbulent times. Today, Cassandra helps organizations disrupt ‘change as usual'. Through a practical and repeatable framework, she shows them how they can transform their culture from surviving change to growing through change. Change Enthusiasm is not just about positive thinking, it's about embracing all emotions as signals for growth and opportunity. That's the Opportunity— how can you grow in this moment? The third and final step is the Choice. It's when you decide, What am I going to do to step up? It gives us power when facing uncertainty.[12:30] - Keep a Compliment JournalLet it guide your directionUnsure of where your strengths and passions lie? Cassandra was, too. Then she began jotting down the compliments she received about herself. Pretty quickly, she began to get a clear picture of where her true strengths might be. She began pursuing these potential passions and whittled down her direction from there.[33:00] - Be an Emotional ContagionSpread a virus worth spreadingCassandra writes about what she calls Emotional Contagion— the way we can literally catch the emotional energy of those around us. That's why it's so important that we take responsibility for that energetic signature that we bring into every room. Be your full authentic self, but recognize what you bring to the space.[44:41] - Turning the Spotlight on Quiet QuittingCassandra's guidance for leadershipDon't diminish negative emotions felt by your people. Acknowledge them and create productive avenues for them to flow. Meanwhile, be aware of change fatigue. Many fast-growing companies are in such constant flux— within a world that's perpetually in flux itself— that people often find themselves simply worn out. Be aware of this, and find ways to re-engage with change in a positive way.RESOURCES:[7:00] Change Enthusiasm[19:09] Cassandra's StoryFollow Cassandra:WebsiteInstagramFacebookLinkedInYoutubeFollow Paul:Keynote Speaking WebsitePlaymakers PodcastThe Power of Playing OffenseLinkedInFacebookTwitterInstagramYoutubeSHOW PARTNER:The WHY InstituteAre you ready to find your ‘why'? Cassandra Worthy: Change Enthusiasm Cassandra Worthy enables organizations and individuals to grow through major change and significant shift by harnessing the power of emotion. Whether undergoing a merger, acquisition, start-up, explosive growth, or significant contraction, the strategies and tools of Change Enthusiasm are motivating and energizing workforces worldwide. Her consulting firm was birthed from the pain and challenges she overcame as a corporate executive. Cassandra's client base spans the Fortune 500, including Procter & Gamble, Allstate, Jones Lang LaSalle, Centene Corporation, ConferenceDirect, and WeWork. She's a chemical engineer by training and also brings over a decade of M&A experience distilled down into the critical leadership traits required to lead with exception during times of change and trans-formation. She's the author of Change Enthusiasm: How to Harness the Power of Emotion for Leadership and Success*. In this conversation Cassandra and I explore the critical importance of emotion in the change process. We detail some of the critical places where leaders often miss opportunities to prioritize employee well-being. Then, Cassandra shares some practical steps leaders can take that will help employees better recognize signal emotions so they can eventually find opportunity and choice during the change process. Key Points Many leaders tend to diminish or ignore negative emotions during change. Actively doing that may prevent employees in getting to a place where they see opportunity — and eventually choice. Beware focusing too much attention on vision, roles, and responsibilities — and not enough on employee well-being and fulfillment. The change process is like driving in a car. The structure of the process is the vehicle itself and the people are their fuel. Have discussion about handling change a regular item in 1:1 agendas and team meetings. Leaders can enter into the opportunity that change provides by sharing their own emotions. One way to do this is to be explicit in conversation about what is genuinely inspiring you about the change. Energy, Passion, and More Energy (ft. Cassandra Worthy)Going beyond the surface with one of the most vibrant, passionate, and strategically savvy speakers in the industryOPENING QUOTE:“Every day from the day that I landed the engagement to the day that I actually did it, I did that keynote message in my kitchen. Every day I got up and I was like, "All right, time to deliver my keynote." And gave the same energy and passion if I was in front of an audience. And by the time I did it, all the words were there, they just dropped, just came out of my mouth. And I was able to look in eyeballs, see the energy, engage with folks, and I had a blast.” -Cassandra WorthyGUEST BIO:Cassandra Worthy exploded onto the speaking scene in 2018 and is already seeing fees and volume that make even the most seasoned industry veterans blush. Before that, she spent 15 years in corporate America and began as a chemical engineer. Today, the only label that really fits the bill for Cassandra is change enthusiast.LinksWebsiteInstagramFacebookLinkedInYoutube[4:35] - Be Free-Spirited, but Intentionally SoHow to combine a sense of rebellion with a sense of purposeCassandra gives the impression of someone carefree and even downright whimsical, but behind that free spirit is a focused, driven, and intentional personality honed in her time as a chemical engineer, a field where process makes perfect. She combined intuition and process to create a career unlike anyone else's.[18:15] - Service First, Everything Else SecondCassandra wins by not focusing on winningIf you love your work so much you'd do it for free, then you're ready for a lasting keynote career. Be purpose-driven and purpose-filled, and eventually everything else will follow.[20:55] - Surprise: Practice MattersWhat starts at the kitchen table dominates the keynote stageWhen Cassandra landed a massive engagement, she didn't just celebrate. She sat down in her kitchen every single day and delivered her keynote to an audience of nobody, giving it the same energy and passion she would onstage. By the time the event arrived, the words flowed naturally and she was able to be fully engaged with her audience.[25:42] - Be 100% YourselfIf they want somebody else, they already have them.Cassandra quickly realized that trying to adapt existing messages or approaches to her own personality wasn't going to work. The thing she did best was be herself, and so she molded her message and presence around who she is at her core— someone enthusiastic about change.RESOURCES:[7:47] National Speakers AssociationNational Speakers Association National Speakers Association[9:15] Change Enthusiasm [11:01] Stories that Stick by Kendra HallFollow Cassandra:WebsiteInstagramFacebookLinkedInYoutubeFollow Josh Linkner:FacebookLinkedInInstagramTwitterYouTubeABOUT MIC DROP:Brought to you by eSpeakers, hear from the world's top thought leaders and experts, sharing tipping point moments, strategies, and approaches that led to their speaking career success. Cassandra Worthy is a global keynote speaker, author and consultant who is the CEO and optimistic mind behind Change Enthusiasm. Her three-step method of “Signal. Opportunity. Choice.” provides a blueprint for organizations in transition as they help their employees accept inevitable changes by embracing what she calls the growth mindset. What distinguishes Cassandra's approach is that a significant part of her pedagogy is based upon the acknowledgment and leveraging of the employees' emotions in this change process. As a scientist and chemical engineer, she views emotions as the fuel to support or sabotage change. The more an organization can get right with the emotions of their employees, the better chance they have of successfully launching the new path forward. She also views change as an opportunity for those who are on the receiving end of this complex change bargain (each individual employee) to take a stand for themselves and their future. Cassandra synthesizes it quite succinctly from advice she received when she herself was growing through a significant shift in her previous work life with Proctor & Gamble, “In this moment you can get better, or you can get bitter. And it's your choice.” Better is moving towards the future. Bitter is embracing stagnation. The choice is always in our own hands.Cassandra's WebsiteCassandra's IGCassandra's Facebook Patrick's WebsitePatrick's IGAt the Podium on IGPatrick on LinkedInPatrick on Facebook
