The Domaine Ste Michelle NV Brut 2020 is a non-vintage Champagne-style Sparkling wine from Chateau Ste Michelle in the Columbia Valley of Washington. This is a value-priced Bubbly, it lists for $13 and I found it for $8.99 on-sale.Even though it is a reasonably priced Sparkling wine it is produced in the same production style as Champagne (Cava too) which is a rather involved winemaking technique.Sparkling wine in the ten dollar price range is often made in the Prosecco-style (Charmat Method) which is a modern and more economical way of getting bubbles into wine. With Bubbly at an affordable price, I am not overly concerned about how the bubbles got there. As long the Bubbly is an enjoyable drinking experience I am happy, but I always give a producer extra points for using the more expensive Traditional Method (Champagne). Going the extra mile and still offering an affordable Sparkling wine is commendable. The Domaine Ste Michelle NV Brut 2020 uses a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, along with possibly other varietals, the tech notes are kind of vague. The various lots of grapes of different vintages are fermented separately and then blended together before the second fermentation. One thing mentioned in the Domaine Ste Michelle NV Brut 2020 technical notes is that the first fermentation lasts for two to three weeks.Traditional Method Bubbly almost always talks about the length of its second fermentation, in Champagne the minimum time in the bottle is 18 months, with many wines going months and even years beyond that. The Domaine Ste Michelle NV Brut 2020 does not say a word about the length of 2nd fermentation. At first, I thought that was odd, but once I thought about it made a bit of sense. With Bubbly, the winemaker uses their tricks to create a "House Style" to make the Bubbly their own identifiable Bubbly during the first fermentation. With the 2nd fermentation yeast, sugar and time do their thing, you simply have to wait. It is the first fermentation where the Bubbly gets its style. This is a Brut Sparkling wine which means it is not a sweet wine. The technical notes are not fussy, for pairing they suggest popcorn, crackers, or chips. Most marketing notes for Bubbly have you drinking it at black-tie events or on a yacht. I think Domaine Ste Michelle is the more accurate pairing for most folks. The alcohol content is a relatively mild 11.5%, the Domaine Ste Michelle may be a good wine to break out when you have guests who need to drive home.Domaine Ste Michelle NV Brut 2020 Tasting NotesThe color is a wheat yellow with a hint of gold. The bubbles are plentiful and energetic. The nose is ripe apple, lemons and limes, hard citrus candy, cherry, a little spice, and just a little bit of yeasty bread. This is a tasty Bubbly, it is smooth, but has a nice edge. It starts with a mix of lemon and green apple, then a little unsweetened tart cherry. The mid-palate adds a salty sensation, grapefruit, a little guava, and stone fruit. The acidity is the way I like it, plenty enough to give the Bubbly a backbone and let the flavors have space to unfold. But also enough to stimulate your palate a getting you ready for another sip.The SummaryThe Domaine Ste Michelle NV Brut 2020 is an unpretentious Bubbly that delivers the goods. This is a very drinkable Sparkling wine, it is dry (not sweet), but it has a nectar or fruity sweetness (not sugary) to it.This is everyday Bubbles that will do just fine on NewYears Eve or an important event.

In this week's episode, I sat down with my good high school friend, Christy Rolf, for an exciting episode into her career in the world of Interior Design. We touched on multiple aspects of interior design: what the role is, misconceptions on the industry, the need to have an understanding of other disciplines such as construction and architecture and what careers are out there for those interested in the sector. Lastly, Christy gave a very compelling pitch to why it is beneficial to think about hiring an interior designer for your next home or business and she also provided a couple of simple, yet effective tips for any upcoming DIY projects you might have. It's always fun catching up with high school friends and this was even better as I got to learn about a career that quite frankly, I was never exposed to growing up or in my years of education. Most importantly for our cocktails, Christy was enjoying her quarantine-special (Bees Knees) and I was having a glass of cabernet sauvignon from Chateau Ste Michelle. If there is only 1 takeaway from this must-listen conversation, it's the phrase Christy taught me - "More pillows on your bed = everything's good". The StoryThe Liquid Light Sauvignon 2018 is a wine brand from Chateau Ste Michelle's family of wines sourced from grapes on 68% Horse Heaven Hills AVA and 32% Yakima AVA of Washington State. Chateau Ste Michelle is by far the largest winery in Washington and according to several winemakers I have talked to over the years, they are a very good neighbor.A few years ago you would have seen Columbia Valley as the vineyard location, but Washington wines seem to have done some rebranding. I don't know if folks thought Columbia Valley was located in California or what, but the labels now say Washington State along with the sub-AVA. This puts more emphasis on the individual growing areas in Washington, which is a good thing. The name Liquid Light is a reference to the 5th form of matter that was recently discovered. I am only aware of the first four, there is yes, it matters, no it doesn't matter, well if it matters that much to you, then ok, and I don't know let me think about it. Yes, I am a scientist. The fifth form of matter is the Bose-Einstein condensate and even after reading the explanation, I have no idea what it is. The other 4 are solids, liquids, gases, and plasma, what any of that has to do with Sauvignon Blanc, I do not know.I am a fan of Sauvignon Blanc, but I am not overly familiar with Washington State Sauv Blanc. The grapes are sourced from cool-climate growing AVAs and Chateau Ste Michelle has an excellent track record for producing affordable wines, I found this for $9.99. The alcohol content is a mild 12.0%.Liquid Light Sauvignon Blanc 2018 Tasting NotesThe color is a pale, clear wheat yellow. The nose is interesting, it is very different from New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, there is a mix of peach, lemon, and pear, a little grapefruit, lime, and a distinct grassy aroma. This Sauv Blanc has a soft smooth mouthfeel and tart flavors. It starts with peach, apricot, a touch of honey, grapefruit, pear, and lime. The mid-palate lemon, juicy apple, a little salty sensation, and not sweet pineapple. The SummaryThe Liquid Light Sauvignon Blanc 2018 is no copycat Sauv Blanc, it is a different take, but a very tasty take. The Liquid Light has a great deal of flavor and really good acidity, which is excellent combination.

Chateau Ste. Michelle Canoe Ridge Estate Merlot In this episode, Rob, Scott, and Becky follow up their enjoyment of Rutherford Hill Napa Valley Merlot with one from Horse Heaven Hills in Washington, the Chateau Ste. Michelle Canoe Ridge Estate Merlot.  Will Napa prove to be the better of the two, or can Scott not control his rampant bias/obsession/irrational love for Horse Heave Hills and provide an idiotic review?  We shall see... on The Wine Vault.

Prayers of the Saints Chardonnay 2017

The Prayers of the Saints Chardonnay 2017 is 100% Chardonnay sourced from vineyards in Washington State. I have noticed that wine that once had Columbia Valley as the place of origin on the label now say Washington State, they must be looking to promote Washington since the Columbia Valley produces 99% of the wine in Washington. Prayers of the Saints Chardonnay (there is also a Prayer of the Sinners Red Blend) is a new label from Chateau Ste Michelle, the largest winery in Washington. This Chardonnay has some interesting features, 7% of the juice is "Black Chardonnay", no, that isn't a type of Chardonnay, it is Chardonnay that became oxidized early in the winemaking process. If you saw the movie "Bottle Shock" you are familiar with its symptoms, the Chardonnay turns a nasty brown color before reverting to the golden Chardonnay hue we all know. In the movie it was accidental, but here, it is intentional. It is a technical process I don't quite understand, but if it occurs early in the process it is beneficial and if the wine oxidizes late in the winemaking you have major problems. The winemakers say it reduces bitterness and adds rich, complex flavor and it is something that you would not expect in a Chardonnay selling in the $10 to $13 range. 76% of the juice was fermented and aged in stainless steel vats and 24% in 53% French oak and 47% American oak barrels, no new barrels, but a mix of 1 and 2 year old barrels. French and American oak are two different species of oak and they have different grain structure and impart different flavors. So these various percentages add up to a very detailed and precise oak flavoring to the wine. I always say no 2 winemakers produce Chardonnay the same way, while there are many similarities from one Chard to another there is always something at least a little different and the Prayer of the Saints may be markedly different. The packaging of the wine also stands out, the label is a mashup of medieval skeletons and Salvador Dali-like painting of praying saints. And here is the labels party trick...the back label says that if you are a saint or a sinner the truth will be revealed  in the dark (so be sure the front label is exposed to bright light) because when the lights are cut the label becomes a glow in the dark praying skeleton. So it looks like according to this Chardonnay we are all sinners, they're probably right. The alcohol content is 13.5%, not that sinners worry about such things. The color is wheat yellow with a golden tint. The nose is on the husky side, melon, lemon, peach, pear, French vanilla, baking spice, apple, and flowers. This is a fruit-forward smooth, medium-bodied Chardonnay, with lip smacking acidity (that's a good thing). It tastes of a mix of peach, pear, lime, and lemon curd, ripe green apple, and vanilla cream. The mid-palate offers hint of spice, a salty sensation, and pink lemonade, followed by melon. The acidity allows the Chardonnay to be an appealing sipping wine and also pair well with upscale summer salads and cold seafood, shrimp, oysters, and crab legs. The finish mirrors the body of the wine and hangs around for a respectable length of time. Summary * You saw the Bottle Shock movie now you can kind of taste what they were talking about, two very different Chardonnays, but it isn't everyday, especially in this price range, that you get to experience "Black Chardonnay". * You can choose a wine by the label, wine with skulls and/or skeletons on the label have never let me down and you can add bonus points for glow-in-the-dark skeletons * Washington State wines offer a great deal of taste and quality in the value price wine class * The "Black Chardonnay" adds a hint of sweetness, this is basically a "dry" wine, but there is ripe, sweet fruit around the edges of the flavor profile

Erath Oregon Pinot Noir 2016

The Erath Oregon Pinot Noir 2016 is sourced from vineyards all over Oregon, the Willamette Valley AVA is the one that everyone knows, but there is also the Rogue Valley AVA and the Umpqua Valley AVA. Erath Winery is one of the Chateau Ste Michelle family of wines and this is their "Taste of Oregon" Pinot Noir, they produce several different Pinots including high-end single vineyard Pinot Noir. The stated goal for this wine is "to make the best Pinot Noir in the world for under $20" and they just may have pulled it off since both Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator awarded this sub-$20 Pinot, 90 points. For me giving a wine a point score is essential if you are purchasing a $150+ wine and want to insure you are buying one of the elite wines, for under $20 value priced wines points don't mean as much. But, both those publications have well-respected, talented critics and while their palates may not been in tune with yours or mine, they do know how to identify quality in the vineyard and in the winemaking. So a good score for a value wine does indicate top quality, if the wine appeals to you or not is another story. The 2016 growing season in Oregon was cool and long, just what Pinot Noir grapes need to excel. 20% for this wine was aged in new French oak, they didn't specify if it was oak barrels or other means to impart oak seasoning. The alcohol content is 13.5%. The color is clear, see-thru garnet red. The nose is delicate and complicated, herbs, cherry, mushroom, baking spices, black pepper, raspberry, and a whiff of dark chocolate. This is a light to medium-bodied wine, the flavor profile starts off soft, then builds, very cool. It tastes of ripe cherry, a slap of pepper, some not sweet cola, candy spice, and herbs. The mid-palate shows tart cranberry with cream, orange zest, a quick hit of milk chocolate, and smooth plum. The tannins are sweet, you sense them, but there is no bite. The acidity is solid, you don't get these many flavors unfolding in a sip of wine without well-balanced acidity acting as a backbone. The finish engages you palate and then slowing fades away. The Erath Oregon Pinot Noir 2016 is an excellent Pinot Noir, no need for a "for the price" qualifier. It has flavor galore, it has structure that holds the wine together, but also stays out-of-the-way of you're sipping pleasure. I used to say that the Willamette Valley AVA produced my favorite Pinot Noirs, but I think from now on I will simply say my favorite Pinot Noir comes from Oregon.
