Matana Roberts is a multidisciplinary artist, saxophonist, composer, and performer. With the release of In the Garden…, their ongoing, projected 12-chapter series COIN COIN is near its midpoint. Roberts has developed a composition system for the series based on mixed media scores combining graphic notation, visual art, film, and ephemera, channeling the images and (hi)stories left behind. Coming out of the fertile hybrid music scenes of Chicago, Roberts resists being pigeon-holed into any one genre, and has a particularly complicated relationship being labeled as a “jazz” musician. In fact, as they point out in this episode, Roberts rejects binaries in general, preferring to explore other ways of being, a theme which is also reflected in the narratives of each of the chapters of COIN COIN. In this episode, we discuss Chapter Five, the loss of jaimie branch, and the lessons they learned from Montreal. Nana Sula Spirit… Woman of Peace is a Singer, Songwriter, Author, Entrepreneur, Artist, Producer, Birth Doula, Sacred Workshop Facilitator and Priestess. She was initiated in Ghana in 2007 as a Priestess of Mami Wata and given the title Nana Okomfo Kokoi Ama Tawiah under the Ga & Ewe systems. Nana Sula was a student at the Shrine of Impohema from 1991 – 2007 under the guidance Nana Obusomfo Ahia & Nana Santrofi. Nana Sula has studied the IFA system since 1985 and was a member of the Egbe of Orisha in Brooklyn, NY from 1992 – 1996 prior to moving to New Orleans. She was born and raised in New Jersey. In 2014, Nana authored and produced the Book & CD Project entitled Spirit of the Orisha – a Yoruba Song preservation project highlighting 38 Yoruba chants. Her solo project A Journey Within was written and recorded in Tanzania in 2016 and is available worldwide. Sula is the former Professor of Sacred Music at the Ifa University in Washington, D.C. and is founding Priestess of the Temple of Light Ile de Coin-Coin - a Temple of power for the elevation of souls located in the Musicians Village – New Orleans, Louisiana. Sula holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree with distinguished honors in African Studies and English Literature from Rutgers University in New Jersey (1994). She has traveled extensively throughout Africa and the Caribbean and has been a volunteer with Operation Crossroads Africa participating in community development projects on the Continent since 1991. Sula is a Singer/Songwriter with her bands Coin-Coin & The Maroons. She is a Mardi Gras Indian Medicine Queen with the Mandingo Warriors – the Spirit of Fi-Yi-Yi and a Master Bead Artist. In this chat, we get to meet acclaimed composer Matana Roberts. Best known for their work as a saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer in the world of avant garde and improvisational jazz, Matana Roberts has been making a name for themselves for quite a while. We met on the cusp of the release of the fifth chapter in their ongoing Coin Coin series -- Chapter 5: In the Garden. In this chat, Matana and I go long on this new album, and how it fits into the overall arc of Coin Coin, which sees Matana exploring their own personal and familial history alongside some bitter truths and explorations of American cultural and social history. The new record tells the story of a relative of theirs from the 1920s who died following an illegal abortion, and it's just as beguiling and beautiful as the chapters that preceded it. It's a bit of a circuitous talk, but in the best way - it felt like an alive conversation, and I had such fun diving head first into these complex and nuanced waters with Matana, who met me with warmth and wisdom. She shares accounts of suffering from non-cataplectic narcolepsy, a non-obvious brain condition causing excessive daytime sleepiness, undiagnosed for 17 years, hypnagogic hallucinations (vivid and terrifying sensations while falling asleep) and sleep paralysis (a frightening inability to move or speak while falling asleep or upon waking) which started at age 13; mother worrying it was demonic possession as a child; her condition feeling like a deep dark secret which shook her Catholic faith, feeling she had experienced the devil thus, knowing there was a God, but after being diagnosed knowing it wasn't the devil then questioning whether there is a God; attending school for medical assisting; managing her condition as an adult, fulfilling self-actualization by using her brain to work for the state, instead of only holding physical jobs at a deli and grocery store to avoid falling asleep, when she got hit by a car, thrown eighteen feet, landing head first, resulting in mild traumatic brain injury, causing memory loss; losing her job, ending up on welfare six months later; taking six years to get back to work; achieving happiness; growing up in Los Angeles and then northern CA having Creole parents with Louisiana roots; her mother wanting her to pass for white and be anything but black; not having ethnic pride because of being "nothing"; not having a problem being black but "woman of color” a great descriptor; mother's family Dawes file, denied Choctaw membership, having 13% Native American DNA; her father discovering a book written about Metoyer family while visiting Louisiana; hard to swallow learning was a descendant of an African American who owned slaves; Coin Coin using slave labor to purchase her children; Metoyer marrying white to have an acceptable family to which he could leave property; defining Creole as being a mixture of African American, Spanish, French and Indian, the food, the traditions; her dark skinned father; great-great grandmother from Lafourche, Louisiana marrying the grandson of the Georgetown 272 Harriet enslaved by Jesuits selling slaves to build college; questioning why join DAR since she felt "it is all those white women who wouldn't let Marian Anderson sing"; joining after listening to a podcast episode about DAR by black host Bernice Bennett; DAR members being welcoming, having more in common than differences with members; mother never having a birth certificate, never able to travel out of country or vote; discovering her mother's birth certificate, grossly misspelled and identifying her father, previously unconfirmed; joining the Sacramento DAR chapter before the Cane River DAR chapter of Metoyer descendants was formed; never having met other DAR Metoyer descendants, estimated 10,000 descendants of Metoyer and Coin Coin; "I don't feel like 'nothing'" belonging to a society in which multiple descendants are members; serving as a chapter officer; father always asking "have you gone to any of those racist DAR meetings lately?", DAR sisters showing up for father's funeral without telling them, feeling very cared for that they came, having a big impact on her life; reconciling DAR's past history of racism by “judging others by their character and not color of their skin and that goes for DAR”.Read Dawn's biography at www.daughterdialogues.com/daughtersSubscribe to the newsletter at www.daughterdialogues.com

Sarah est directrice de production de "Coin Coin production", label manageuse du "Label du coin", directrice pédagogique de l’organisme de formation Formassimo, formatrice, consultante CRM pour le logiciel Mascaron, membre fondatrice d’Inouïe distribution et enfin, manageuse du groupe Antiquarks (mais ce n'est pas indiqué sur sa biographie Linkedin, sans doute par manque de place ^^) Bref, Sarah a plus d'une corde à son arc et elle choisit tout, tout le temps ! C'est pour ça que je suis ravie de la recevoir dans le podcast d'aujourd'hui. Entrepreuneuse autodidacte, son parcours est riche en rencontres, expériences et apprentissages. Vous verrez que tout au long de cet épisode, l'apprentissage et la transmission des connaissances sont des notions récurrentes. Un peu le leitmotiv de Sarah d'ailleurs. Je crois que c'est l'épisode le plus important que j'ai enregistré jusqu'à présent. En échangeant avec Sarah, j'ai aussi appris des choses pour moi et mon business. J'ai aussi été conforté dans l'idée que ce podcast peut servir et d'après Sarah, le podcast me réserve aussi des belles surprises. Au passage, je crois qu'elle a raison. Depuis cet enregistrement j'ai d'excellents retours et des nouveaux invités tout autant extra les uns que les autres. C'est un épisode riche de tout ! Je vous laisse découvrir notre discussion. Composer, saxophonist, and mixed media artist Matana Roberts presents her latest in the multi-chapter work Coin Coin project which documents the African-American cultural and historical experience. “Memphis,” which is chapter four, mixes jazz, blues, traditional songs, free improv, and Afro-futurism into a heavy sonic quilt of “21st century liberation music.” (Matana Roberts calls her approach “panoramic sound quilting.”) She "speaks memory," and "sings an American survival" in this chapter of the coin coin bloodline (Tiny Mixtapes), set in Memphis - home of Roberts’s grandmother- and around a story of a "wo(e)man chile named Liddie." Enfin une adaptation de bande dessinée qui n'abîme pas nos souvenirs d’enfance. L’ancien Robin des Bois Pierre-François Martin-Laval s’est lancé dans l’adaptation périlleuse de l’oeuvre d’André Franquin et s’en sort plutôt bien. On retrouve dans ce film toutes les images iconiques de Gaston Lagaffe, lui même interprété par l’attachant Théo Fernandez, plus connu sous le nom de Coin-Coin dans “Les Tuches”. Mais si les visuels donnent l’impression d’être bel et bien dans la célèbre bande dessinée, le film ne parvient pas pour autant à retranscrire toute la poésie de l’univers de Franquin. Gaston ne travaille plus dans la rédaction d’un journal mais dans une start-up de petits escrocs revendeurs de gadgets et les problématiques de fainéantise et d’inventivité du personnage ne fonctionnent plus. Professionnel de la disruption par essence, Gaston perd un peu en saveur au contact de la start-up nation. La mujer en el jazz ha estado históricamente asociada a la voz, por eso las voces que suenan en esta edición de 'Club de Jazz' del 8 de marzo de 2016 tienen alguna peculiaridad: La maliense Rokia Traoré no pertenece a la tradición del jazz, pero en su último disco hace versión de "Strange fruit". La griega Savina Yannatou tiene una faceta "ortodoxa" con su grupo Primavera en Salonico, otra de improvisación libre en colaboraciones como la de "Time passing...", una especie de ópera del contrabajista Barry Guy. Voz hipnótica y quebradiza, la noruega Sidsel Endresen participó en "Time bell", trabajo del guitarrista holandés Bram Stadhouders con el baterista Jim Black como invitado. Pianistas hay muchas en el jazz, entre ellas la estadounidense Myra Melford, cuyo "Life carries me this way" se inspira en cuadros de Don Reich. También la eslovena Kaja Draksler, que profesa "This love" a la trompetista portuguesa Susana Santos Silva. Bateristas quizá no abunden, pero haberlas haylas. Ahí está la gallega Lucía Martínez, que se dedica al "Desalambrado" con el pianista Agustí Fernández. También con baquetas se maneja Allison Miller en el proyecto Boom Tic Boom del que también forma parte Myra Melford. Saxofonistas también las hay, como Matana Roberts, que en su serie "Coin Coin" reflexiona sobre algunos aspectos de la tradición del jazz, así como en la vida de los africanos en Estados Unidos durante el siglo XX.
