In this episode of The Open Door, panelists Thomas Storck and Andrew Sorokowski interview JonMarc Grodi of the Coming Home Network. Some of the questions asked include the following: What is the Coming Home Network and how did it begin? How successful has it been? Do you have statistics on home many non-Catholics you've helped bring into the Church? What are the chief obstacles in your experience that prevent Protestants, and perhaps especially Protestant ministers, from considering the claims of the Church?Have these obstacles changed in any important way during the existence of the CHN?Most Protestant clergy have some theological or biblical formation that can be helpful in pointing them toward the Catholic Church? But what about Protestant laymen? How can they be reached best if they've never even thought about these matters, e.g., about where we get the Bible or why it is authoritative? What is the best way for Catholics to engage their friends and neighbors who belong to other Christian bodies with the claims of the Catholic Church?Given that many in the Catholic Church no longer promote evangelization and conversion of non-Catholic Christians, has the CHN run into criticism from Catholics regarding your apostolate?

Special Guest Host Ken Hensley Today's episode is a deep dive into Ken's journey from being a Baptist pastor to embracing the Catholic faith. He discusses the critical issues of sola scriptura and the doctrine of justification by faith alone. Ken shares how curiosity led him to question his beliefs and how discovering Catholic teachings transformed his spiritual path. What is “Justification”? James - How much do you think Martin Luther was influenced by a trip to Rome he took in which saw a lot of problems? (30:30) Andre - I really appreciate what you do and I listened to your 30-part series on the Coming Home Network. (33:48) Bob - How do I talk with friends who don't believe we have a soul? (41:28)
Whether it's an actor, an athlete, an author, or an academic, when someone with a high public profile announces their interest in becoming Catholic, there can often be a wide variety of reactions from both the religious tradition they come from, and the new Church family they're joining. And often they're rushed into the spotlight and encouraged to begin sharing their story immediately. JonMarc Grodi and Matt Swaim share how The Coming Home Network, which was founded by a pastor who left public ministry to become Catholic, thinks about the care of these souls, and how they encourage fellow Catholics to treat them as their new brothers and sisters in the Church. A special Summer message to our On the Journey family: Over the Summer, we're taking a short break from recording new episodes while we plan our next big series, which will be all about The Church. Since Ken and Kenny were both Protestant pastors before they became Catholic, we'll talk about how they planned church services, what they meant by the word "church," and what they thought about the fact that there were a whole bunch of people in their towns who went to church, but didn't go to *their* churches. From there, we'll move on to spend some time looking at what the Catholic Church teaches about, well, the Catholic Church. In the meantime, be sure to check out some of our other great Coming Home Network content: Deep in Christ: https://www.deepinchrist.com Insights: https://chnetwork.org/insights Signposts: https://chnetwork.org/signposts-home CHNetwork Presents: https://www.chnetwork.org/presents Our written conversion story archive: https://www.chnetwork.org/story Also, for those of you who are priests, deacons, or Catholic religious educators, we've just created a *brand new brochure* which we're offering free to parishes, that lets people who are interested in the Catholic Faith know what free resources we have available for them. We'll even print up labels for you that you can put on the back of the brochure with info about who to get in touch with at your parish with questions about the Church! If you'd like us to ship you some of those, send an email to info@chnetwork.org, with the subject line "brochure," and we'll set you up. Finally, Summer will be done before you know it, and with the start of Fall comes the start of parish OCIA programs to help people into the Church. If you're entering one of those, we want to hear from you, either by email or in our online community, which you can join for free at https://community.chnetwork.org. And if you're helping out with one of those programs at a parish, be sure to let everyone there know that the Coming Home Network was founded to help people like them, and we know what it's like to have a lot of mixed emotions about joining the Catholic Church, because we've been there! Finally, all these resources are made available to you for FREE because of the generous support of faithful donors, and you can add your gifts to theirs at https://www.chnetwork.org/compass. Thanks so much, and have a great Summer!
In 2004, Rosalind Moss gave a powerful talk at The Coming Home Network's "Deep in History" Conference. Raised Jewish, she came to know Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and later became an Evangelical minister. She was challenged to examine the history and teachings of the Catholic Church expecting to be reaffirmed in her belief in its errors, but what she discovered astonished her. All Christians talk about worship, but not all understand it in the same way. What is our goal in gathering together regularly as a community of believers? What should we be doing when we're together? How does God ask us to worship Him, and how did the earliest Christians seek to honor Him when they gathered? Matt Swaim, Ken Hensley, and Kenny Burchard start a new series comparing their own experiences of leading Protestant worship gatherings with what they experienced when they first went to Mass, and discuss the questions each of them began to ask about what true Christian worship should look like. 10/11/22 - Fr. Richard Bradford grew up as an Episcopalian in Chicago. In college he felt the call to ministry, attended seminary and was ordained an Episcopal priest in 1970. His brand of Anglicanism was a small segment that saw itself as "pro-papalist". In the 1970's and '80's they thought they would soon reunite as a denomination with Rome. By the early 1990's, Fr. Richard realized, with the doctrinal disintegration of his communion, that the Anglican Communion was no longer his home. He, along with his family and 40 members of his former congregation, were received into the Catholic Church in 1997. Fr. Richard was ordained a Catholic priest in May 1998. Matt Swaim is the co-host of the Son Rise Morning Show, heard Monday through Friday 6-8 am on hundreds of stations in the nationwide EWTN Catholic radio network. He is also the outreach manager for the Coming Home Network, an apostolate that helps non-Catholic Christians who desire to learn more about, and consider entrance into, the Catholic Church. He co-hosts a podcast, “On the Journey,” for that organization. Paul and Bill talked with Matt largely about the challenges in understanding, and then catechizing and evangelizing about, the Real Presence of Christ's body and blood, soul and divinity. It is this Eucharist, into which Catholics believe the bread and wine at Mass have been transubstantiated. Bill also has gotten to know Matt by being interviewed on the Son Rise show, and the two share an interest in media criticism on communication about religion. More generally, they discuss communication which uses symbolic language and sometimes loses touch with important truths. Matt has written a book that deals with these topics. Prayer in the Digital Age, was published by Ligouri Press in 2011. Bill has written a book on related topics. When Headlines Hurt: Do We Have a Prayer? was published in 2018. The topics of the Eucharistic and symbolism vs. the Real Presence became especially timely this year when the US Conference of Catholic Bishops initiated a “National Eucharistic Revival.” The bishops were reacting, in part, to national survey findings that only about one-third of American Catholics believe the Eucharist is the real body and blood of Jesus Christ, rather than a symbol. Survey findings came from the Pew Research Center, and Bill wrote about those findings recently for The Tablet, the newspaper of the Diocese of Brooklyn, NY. Matt made reference to the Latin maxim, Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi. He also referred to the “milkshake duck” meme and how it ties in with digital media culture. This savvy media analyst also made references to The Dark Knight and to the Hollywood films constituting “the Marvel universe” of comic book superheroes.

In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by Kenny Burchard, Director of Development at The Coming Home Network, to talk about the Catholic practice of praying to saints.Kenny spent 33 years as a Charismatic, Evangelical Christian, more than twenty of those in full-time ministry, including planting and pastoring churches, before becoming Catholic in dramatic fashion and joins us here to unpack one of those big questions he had about the Catholic faith – and how he began to understand the ancient practice of asking those Christians, those saints before us, to pray for us. This is a fantastic conversation to begin to unwind some of those misconceptions and misunderstandings you, or those you know, may have about Catholicism. Kenny systematically unpacks the practice of intercessory prayer using the Bible and the Early Church. I hope you love it!Listen to Kenny's complete conversion story in Episode 110 of our show. Today on Deep in Christ I am joined by my father, Marcus, the founder and president of the Coming Home Network and host of EWTN’s Journey Home program, to discuss the urgency of the Gospel. Throughout Scripture, and particularly in the New Testament, we are exhorted to live holy lives, ready on any given day to be called home to the Lord and give an account of how we’ve spent the time and opportunities that have been given to us. How do we understand and live out this “urgency”? How does this urgency bear on the mission and work of the Coming Home Network and the importance of seeking unity among divided Christians? The Catholic Church is facing a lot of serious difficulties. But should the current problems discourage conversion? Join Matthew Leonard and EWTN morning host Matt Swaim in a conversation about Matt's winding road to Catholicism and an honest discussion of where the Church stands today. Matt's in the thick of all the news on a daily basis because of his radio show. He's also constantly dealing with potential converts through his work at the Coming Home Network, so his is a very interesting take. For cradle Catholics, it's a unique look into the Evangelical world. For converts (or potential converts), it's a stroll down memory lane. But at the end of the day, it's a clarion call for each of us to take a hard look in the mirror.

Building upon last episode's discussion of The Universal Call to Holiness and the theme of this show as it fits into the mission of the Coming Home Network, JonMarc Grodi and Ken Hensley look today at a passage in the introduction to Part 3 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which lists eight catecheses on “Life in Christ” which Christians must receive and put into practice. JonMarc and Ken begin to plot a course for the future topics that will be covered on this show, as well as their practical application. ***** Catechism, Part 3, Life in Christ, Introduction (https://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/__P5D.HTM)1697 Catechesis has to reveal in all clarity the joy and the demands of the way of Christ.22 Catechesis for the “newness of life”23 in him should be:a catechesis of the Holy Spirit, the interior Master of life according to Christ, a gentle guest and friend who inspires, guides, corrects, and strengthens this life;a catechesis of grace, for it is by grace that we are saved and again it is by grace that our works can bear fruit for eternal life;a catechesis of the beatitudes, for the way of Christ is summed up in the beatitudes, the only path that leads to the eternal beatitude for which the human heart longs;a catechesis of sin and forgiveness, for unless man acknowledges that he is a sinner he cannot know the truth about himself, which is a condition for acting justly; and without the offer of forgiveness he would not be able to bear this truth;a catechesis of the human virtues which causes one to grasp the beauty and attraction of right dispositions towards goodness;a catechesis of the Christian virtues of faith, hope, and charity, generously inspired by the example of the saints; — a catechesis of the twofold commandment of charity set forth in the Decalogue;an ecclesial catechesis, for it is through the manifold exchanges of “spiritual goods” in the “communion of saints” that Christian life can grow, develop, and be communicated.
Today I'm pumped to be joined by Matt Swaim! Matt drags me out of bed at 12:30 every morning to appear on his show for just five minutes. Now I get him for a full 45 minutes. Matt is a convert to Catholicism. He's a prominent figure on Catholic radio, co-host of the Son Rise Morning Show and contributor to the Coming Home Network. He's also a diehard Cincinnati Reds fan, but we can forgive him for that. (Go Dodgers!) Together we're going to talk about: Why, aside from tandem surfing, baseball is the most Catholic sportHow the Church gives you all the tools to become a saint and how each saint applies those tools differently when they “step up to the plate”Why practice doesn't make perfect and what you need to do to create your perfect practiceHow studying the plays of the “veterans” helps you improve your game on the field and in CatholicismWhy fiction authors sometimes make better evangelists than professional theologians.

One of the most common concerns our members raise with us at The Coming Home Network is the question of not only how to help our children who have strayed from their Catholic faith return to the Church, but how to create a family environment where faith is instilled in such a way that our children never leave it behind in the first place. In this episode, Marcus and his son JonMarc Grodi begin to unpack 7 practical things that parents can do to help give their children a solid foundation in the Church that will last them a lifetime. "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it." -Proverbs 22:6

But what does the Bible say the pillar and bulwark of truth is? 1 Timothy 3:15 points out that the pillar and bulwark of truth is the Church.” SHOWNOTES 1 Timothy 3:15 - “If I am delayed, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of the truth.” Resources * Newman’s Apologia Pro Vita Sua (http://www.newmanreader.org/works/apologia/index.html) * The Coming Home Network (https://chnetwork.org/)

Marcus Grodi continues the theme of "Memorable Verses" with Ken Hensley, who works in pastoral care for The Coming Home Network. This time around, they select from John the Baptist and King David, and look at how both of these men attracted acclaim in the eyes of men, but both ultimately realized that to find true fulfillment, they needed to remind themselves that it is God who gives all good things, and He Himself is the one who can fulfill us. "He must increase, but I must decrease." John 3:30 "You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand." I had the great pleasure of sitting down face-to-face with JonMarc Grodi at the Zaneville, OH offices and studio of the Coming Home Network (chnetwork.org), where we talked about their new social media network (chnetwork.mn.co) for converts. We talk about the ongoing and developing work of the Coming Home Network, and talk about the continual call to conversion that goes out to all who follow Christ.
I met Ken Hensley on the Coming Home Network online community. Ken does pastoral care, manages online communities, writes apologetics articles, leads retreats and pilgrimages and much more for the CHNetwork. It was a real pleasure meeting him.
I met Paul on The Coming Home Network's online community. I asked him to come on my show and tell my listeners a little bit about his conversion, and he was gracious enough to accept. This is his story. Please visit turnkeough.com for more information, including links to his Journey Home episode, and more.

Matt Swaim, Communications Coordinator of The Coming Home Network and host of the Son Rise Morning Show on EWTN Radio, joins Marcus Grodi to discuss Psalm 51, repentance, and salvation. Matt grew up in the Wesleyan tradition, which understood salvation as a matter of free will, and sanctification as the perfection of the will. Marcus, on the other hand, has a background in the "once saved, always saved" Calvinist tradition. Marcus and Matt look at the character of repentance and restoration as discussed in Psalm 51, and look at how the Catholic understanding of sin, free will, repentance and grace are necessary to properly interpret this classic penitential passage of Scripture. "Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit."Psalm 51:10-12

On this episode of Deep in Scripture, Marcus Grodi and Matt Swaim take an in-depth look at Jesus' healing of a paralytic in Matthew 9. It was because of faith that Jesus forgave and healed the man- but whose faith? They also discuss the idea of Jesus' forgiveness of the man's sins as a precursor to the power to forgive sins that Jesus would one day transmit to his apostles. Matt Swaim is the Communications Coordinator for The Coming Home Network.
Paul Thigpen, a member of The Coming Home Network, joins Marcus Grodi this week to discuss 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17. Paul was a pastor in a tradition that believed in the rapture. Many read this passage to say that Christ will come back before the end of time and take all believers to Himself. Paul discovered that this reading of the passage is very modern and diverges widely from how Christians historically understood it.

Question: What do you get when you take a Canadian Presbyterian pastor's kid and send him to an orthodox American Catholic university where he has to take a Natural Family Planning class with a pretty girl? Answer: A convert with eight kids! That's what. But unlike a lot of Catholic converts in the public eye, Kevin Lowry is a businessman. That doesn't mean he doesn't do the normal convert stuff. His conversion story, which we're going to hear a good bit of, is in Surprised by Truth 2. He's also the author of a book titled Faith at Work: Finding Purpose Beyond the Paycheck. Kevin speaks at parish missions and conferences, too, and even serves as a consultant for The Coming Home Network for Marcus Grodi. But as I said, he's a little different than many converts with a platform. Kevin's full-time gig is that of Chief Financial Officer for a digital marketing company (not to mention being a father to all those kids). What does that mean? It means he's a practical guy that a lot of people can relate to. He's a passionate Catholic man who loves the Lord, loves the Church, and is a witness to how the Lord can change your life. So sit back, pour yourself a warm cup of coffee, and enjoy a fabulous story. God bless! Matthew “All who have been lost were lost because they did not pray.” St. Alphonsus Liguori. Don't be lost!
