There is a common ingredient in the Standard American Diet and it's wreaking havoc on our health. They're found in heavily processed snack or frozen foods, deep-fried menu items, baked goods (chips, crackers, cookies, etc.), margarine-type spreads, and bottled vegetable oils (canola, corn, safflower, etc.). They're also arguably the most dangerous items you can eat. ----Refined high-polyunsaturated vegetable/seed oilsExcess intake of these vegetable oils, which comprise predominantly omega-6 fatty acids, contribute to systemic inflammationWhen exposed to heat, these oils oxidize, contributing even further to inflammation and free radical damage. Refined vegetable/seed oils are so unstable that they can start to oxidize when exposed to air, light, or moisture. Accordingly, ingesting these agents promotes oxidative (free radical) damage to cells and tissues inside the body. Over time, free radical damage causes premature aging, skin disease, heart disease, liver damage, immune dysfunction, and even cancer.Upon eliminating refined vegetable/seed oils and dangerous chemically altered fats, you can then cook with temperature-stable saturated fats that will not oxidize. These include coconut oil, butter/ghee, animal fats (bacon grease, lard, etc.). Olive oil and avocado oil are also great options for cooking and dressing your food. These are the items to eliminate from your kitchen first:Bottled vegetable/seed oils (canola, cottonseed, corn, soybean, safflower, grapeseed, and peanut oils)All foods containing refined high-polyunsaturated oils and especially partially hydrogenated trans fats. Read the labels on any foods that come in a box, jar, bottle, or bag. You'll be shocked at how many products contain these sneaky oils. It’s the 13th of July, so it’s time for the Advent Calendar House to unearth one of our favorite Halloween haunts, 1979’s “The Halloween That Almost Wasn’t,” starring an exceptionally great Judd Hirsch as Count Dracula. On This EpisodeMike Westfall (@fallwestmike), Transylvanian mother who apparently needs two whole days apply my kids’ costume makeup.Tom Coombs (@ClassicTomedy), creature tap-dancing with someone else’s feet, from TPIF: Thank Pod It’s Funny.Topics and TangentsThis was renamed for its VHS release as “The Night Dracula Saved the World,” except no, he doesn’t.Lyndhurst Mansion plays the role of both Dracula’s castle and the Witch’s castle. It’s located in New York state, not far from Sleepy Hollow. The opening music, Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue in D minor,” was never in a Dracula movie. Its first uses in sound film were in 1931’s “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” and 1934’s “The Black Cat,” starring Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. My association of the music to Dracula probably stems from its use on Castle Dracula, a haunted boat ride on the Wildwood, New Jersey boardwalk that burned down in 2002.Jack Riley (Warren the Werewolf) was also the voice of Stu Pickles on “Rugrats,” and did a bunch of Country Crock spread commercials.Either it’s a small film goof, or it takes Igor a good minute and a half to realize he’s holding the Witch’s broom.Do local Transylvania kids just know where this Witch lives, like a Hollywood celebrity homes tour?Judd Hirsch as Dracula exaggeratedly disco dancing in a white “Saturday Night Fever” jumpsuit is the greatest way to end anything ever.Previous Podcast Episodes MentionedWitch’s Night Out (Season 1, Bonus)The Star Wars Holiday Special (Season 2, Episode 2)Garfield’s Halloween Adventure (Season 2, Bonus)“The Halloween That Almost Wasn’t” © 1979 Concepts Unlimited.Commercial Break: McDonald’s “Scared Silly” Halloween commercial, starring Ronald McDonald and the Chicken McNuggets. The Advent Calendar House is on the web at adventcalendar.house, on Twitter @adventcalhouse, and part of the Christmas Podcast Network.

Yesterday AJ & McCall had a friend that said Jason Momoa, Aquaman, wasn't attractive and didn't get all the hype. What other re-purposed storage have you or family members used? 9/11 is such a tough day to arrive at no matter how much time passes, but should it be a National Holiday?

Now that’s crazy but everyone has some celebrities that they don’t dig despite the rest of the world saying they’re gorgeous, who are yours? AJ got a talking to about being too casual, so what is appropriate for a guy who is 30? Yesterday the Debate At 8 was washing disposable items, but AJ & McCall agree that if you didn’t have those Cool Whip or Country Crock butter containers as your cheap tupperware then you didn’t really have a childhood. What other re-purposed storage have you or family members used? 9/11 is such a tough day to arrive at no matter how much time passes, but should it be a National Holiday?

Before Pinterest, guest Holly Ledingham (follow her on Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram) kept her favorite recipes and ideas in a binder. When she discovered the site, she took to pinning every single day and within one year had 250,000 followers. Now a Pinterest expert, she works as a social influencer for New York Times company HelloSociety and brands like Country Crock, Nabisco, and DreamWorks to name a few. In the episode, Holly and Virgil discuss several ways to achieve greater success from your Pinterest account. Key Takeaways: Compelling content comes first! Holy schlikeys! In this, the follow-up to our infamous (and banned!) Harvey Weinstein episode, we discuss the link between margarine use and sociopathy, Country Crock and other butter substitutes, the superfluousness of buttering a muffin, why my dad hates butter substitutes, and diversity in film over the generations.
Jenn Randazzo joins the show from San Francisco this week! Our bi-coastal mid-afternoon chat felt more like a happy hour with an old friend. (Jenn and I have known each other for less than one year.) We cover everything from Nancy Drew novels to gut health to Country Crock margarine. PSA: opt for the real stuff (butter). In the nutrition news: - Boston and other major cities provide “good” food to patients with chronic health conditions (and often food insecurity) - does it “count as health care?” (STAT News) - Cookbooks tell you how to cook, but not how to avoid food-borne illness (NCSU Study) - “Our relationship with food is messed up, it started with butter” (Washington Post) Bonus: a list of #TryPod suggestions from both of us! Included in this episode: Moribund age percentages and death stalkers, making entirely new dudes by removing a letter, dude emulations, hanging bundles of salamis abutting dairy aisles opposite dairy product booths, exaggerating abundance, the cost of flip flops in LA grocery markets, the riddle of the two Ralphs, upscale bean salad on a pizza shell, lack of interest in violating the patina, opulent half and half servers, living high on the pre-softened hog, the humorous potential of the letter R, the timelessness of the Country Crock artwork versus the timefulness of the film Johnny Mnemonic, papyrus experts, and period pieces
Episode # 18.5 of THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID finds both Matt and Ian revving up the flux capacitor for another trip back in time. Michael's down, gang... all for the love of crispy, crackling bacon... and it's Dwight to the rescue (whether Micheal wants him to or not). What's more serious-- a foot injury, or a head injury? Michael's faith in his employees is shattered, but can Pam and a tub of Country Crock make things right again? And Dwight? What's a little concussion between pals? Oh, by the way, you forgot your bumper, man. Incidental music provided by the Podshow Podsafe Music Network.
