The Cuy'val Dar were the one hundred trainers — seventy-five of them Mandalorians — handpicked by Jango Fett to forge the Republic's clone commandos in secret on Kamino. In this Star Wars Legends deep dive, Star Lores explores "those who no longer exist": Kal Skirata, Walon Vau, Mij Gilamar, Rav Bralor, and the mercenaries, bounty hunters, and assassins who shaped clone individuality, Mandalorian culture, and the elite soldiers of the Grand Army of the Republic. From the Republic Commando saga and the Clone Wars to Kyrimorut, Death Watch, and the legacy that echoed into the Yuuzhan Vong War, we break down the men and women who built an army and vanished. Darth Maul was cut in half at the end of The Phantom Menace — and then he spent a decade going slowly insane on a trash planet, came back, conquered Mandalore, and watched it all collapse again. With Maul: Shadow Lord arriving, Matthew and Erin lay out everything you need to know about how one of Star Wars' most iconic figures ended up here. Whether you're walking into Maul: Shadow Lord as a lifelong lore obsessive or someone who just remembers the double-bladed lightsaber, this is the episode that gets you ready. They trace Maul's full arc from Lotho Minor to the Siege of Mandalore: his obsessive fixation on Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Shadow Collective he built from crime lords and Death Watch soldiers, and the moment he used Satine's death to make Kenobi feel what he had felt for years. They also dig into what Order 66 actually cost him — not just the Shadow Collective, but the only two purposes that had been animating his life since The Phantom Menace. The conversation lands on what makes Maul: Shadow Lord such a compelling premise: Maul is the man who saw it all coming and was ignored by everyone. Now the war is over, his enemies are gone, and he has to figure out what he's fighting for. Plus, Erin makes a strong case for why Sam Witwer's voice performance is the reason anyone is this excited about a Maul show in the first place.Mentioned in This EpisodeThe Phantom MenaceStar Wars: The Clone Wars — Season 4, Season 7 (Siege of Mandalore arc)Solo: A Star Wars StoryAhsokaThe MandalorianThe Bad BatchRevenge of the SithStar Wars Generations Episode 324 — Maul, Death Watch, and the fall of MandaloreStar Wars Generations Episode 327 — Darth Maul in LegendsLinksConnect with Matthew: matthew@theethicalpanda.com · TikTok · Facebook · Instagram · Twitter/XConnect with Erin: Instagram · TikTok**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Star Wars Generations, an Ethical Panda podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. Peter and Eden watch 1981's Escape from New York and land, predictably, on opposite sides: Eden had a blast, Peter was fighting sleep and checking the runtime. Before getting there, they spend a significant chunk of the episode on a surprise Neurosis album drop — An Undying Love for a Burning World — that apparently derailed any other listening either of them did for a week and a half. They also work through a stack of new metal releases, Eden's ongoing Continuity Comics deep dive (cliffhangers with no resolution, going all the way down), and the inevitable sidebar about Ready Player One being one of the worst things ever committed to paper.SHOW NOTESContinuity Comics / Death Watch 2000 — Eden is deep into the indie comics boom-and-bust era. Death Watch 2000 (20 issues, zero through nineteen) ends on a cliffhanger because issue 20 never came out. The follow-up crossover, Rise of Magic, also ends on a cliffhanger — because the company went under. Eden is reading Ms. Mystic through all of this.Dungeon Crawler Carl — Peter is on book five (nearly six) of the LitRPG series. Eden remains skeptical on principle, largely due to the covers, a detailed bit about the Mantar illustration, and a Chuck Tingle tangent.Project Hail Mary (film) — Peter saw it in St. George during spring break and liked it. Eden knows the twist, is annoyed it was in the trailer, and delivers the hot take that the film is secretly about "exospecies gay love" — which, they argue, makes Andy Weir's claims to apolitical writing somewhat complicated.New metal releases rundown — Peter ran down a week where six metal albums dropped at once: Exodus's Goliath (disappointing

Darth Maul doesn't just survive; he conquers. With Matthew out of town, Alex and Erin take over Star Wars Generations to dig into Maul's arc across The Clone Wars Seasons 4 and 5: the Death Watch alliance, the takeover of Mandalore, and the cold, calculated murder of Satine — engineered specifically to break Obi-Wan.The hosts trace how Maul goes from drifting through space to ruling a planet and commanding multiple crime syndicates in a matter of weeks, and what it reveals about his obsession with Kenobi. They also reckon with Palpatine's stunning arrival on Mandalore — dual-wielding lightsabers, dissolving Savage to nothing — and what it means that the Emperor kept Maul alive on purpose. Plus: the tragic arc of Savage Opress, Almec's return as a puppet ruler, and the surprisingly deep roots these episodes put down for The Mandalorian, Rebels, and everything that came after.Related episodes: Maul's revival in S4 E21–22 · The Box arc with Embo, S4 E15–18**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Star Wars Generations, an Ethical Panda podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. Everything fans want from a top-tier animated action series: razor-sharp stealth missions, tense betrayals, and dynamic, layered characters. Splinter Cell: Deathwatch might be the most unexpected comeback in gaming history: an animated Netflix series based on a franchise that's been dormant for a decade. MonteCristo and DoA dive deep into Ubisoft's strange revival of Sam Fisher, the stealth-action legend who's now older, grizzled, and apparently stuck in an anime-style John Wick universe created by Derek Kolstad. In this episode, the hosts debate whether Deathwatch is a solid espionage thriller or just a messy prelude to Ubisoft's upcoming Splinter Cell remake. They discuss the show's surprising violence, chaotic hacking scenes, and the questionable logic of “chaos algorithms,” plus the performances of Liev Schreiber as Sam Fisher and the legacy of Michael Ironside's voice. Follow our link and use code NERD to unlock 10% off your purchase at Manta Sleep! https://tinyurl.com/mume73e3 Black Friday is around the corner, and Raycon audio products are up to 30% off sitewide! The story begins with rising tensions between Terra and a secretive Mars, as Fabricator-General Kubik experiments with Ork teleportation tech, perhaps to flee the system entirely. After a near civil war is averted, information surfaces that The Beast is on Ullanor. Koorland is dispatched to find the only being who can lead the charge: the Primarch Vulkan, who is found fighting an entire Ork army alone on Caldera. Vulkan returns to lead a massive Imperial armada to Ullanor, now a terrifying "Attack Planet". The campaign culminates in a desperate assault on The Beast's "temple gargant," where Vulkan sacrifices himself in a cataclysmic explosion to kill the Ork leader. But the war is far from over. A chilling signal—"I am Slaughter"—emerges from the attack moon over Terra. In response, Koorland proposes a "hamfisted" and heretical new force of unified Astartes: the Deathwatch. As the newly formed Deathwatch battles the moon, Koorland also seeks out the long-lost Sisters of Silence to counter the Orks' psychic power.Support the show

“As you do draft after draft, it becomes shorter and rendered down. And [Keanu Reeves and I] would go through scenes going, ‘Can people say less? Can the action be tighter? Can the action sequence be shorter?' The action is an extension of the hero's journey and if you don't give a sh*t about the character, it doesn't matter how great your action is,” says Derek Kolstad about his writing process with actor Keanu Reeves when they worked on the script that would become John Wick and spark an entire franchise.  On today's episode, we speak with screenwriter Kolstad about his masterful John Wick action movies and his new animated TV show, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Deathwatch based on the popular video game.   Kolstad also shares his surprising advice for coming up with action scenes that feel fresh and inventive by going back to the silent era. “Look at Buster Keaton. Harold Lloyd, and Fatty Arbuckle, the Keystone Cops. Look at how those sequences were done, and then there's Asian cinema, you know? What I love about the things that I've been a part of is there's always this sense of humor at play. Nothing's so dark and so bleak that you're not enjoying it.” To hear more, listen to the podcast.

Join Here: https://ow.ly/msoH50WCu0K Dive into the shadows of espionage with Analytic Dreamz on Notorious Mass Effect as he delivers his unfiltered reaction to the electrifying official trailer for Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, the upcoming Netflix animated spy thriller. Created by John Wick mastermind Derek Kolstad, this adult-oriented series brings back legendary operative Sam Fisher—voiced by Liev Schreiber—as a grizzled Fourth Echelon commander pulled from retirement. Set decades after the iconic games, the story follows Fisher mentoring a battle-scarred recruit, Zinnia McKenna, to dismantle a sprawling global conspiracy led by the sinister Displace organization and the vengeful offspring of his old foe, Douglas Shetland.Analytic Dreamz breaks down the trailer's pulse-pounding action sequences, slick animation from Sun Creature and Fost studios, and nods to Splinter Cell lore like Chaos Theory flashbacks. He explores how the series amps up the stealth, betrayal, and high-stakes intrigue that defined the franchise, questioning if this adaptation captures the essence of Sam Fisher's tactical genius or veers too far into John Wick-style chaos. From the night-vision goggles to the visceral combat, Analytic Dreamz analyzes the visual flair, voice performances, and potential plot twists that promise a thrilling ride when it drops on Netflix October 14, 2025.Whether you're a die-hard Splinter Cell fan reliving Sam's glory days or new to the Tom Clancy universe craving conspiracy-fueled animation, this segment unpacks why Deathwatch could redefine video game adaptations. Analytic Dreamz shares his take on the trailer's suspenseful buildup, emotional depth in Fisher's arc, and what it means for future seasons.
