Deborah Sampson defied 18th-century gender norms by disguising herself as a man to fight in the American Revolutionary War. Born into poverty and bound by the limitations of her time, Deborah's courage and resilience propelled her into a life of espionage, injury, and honor on the battlefield. We explore her motivations, the double life she led as "Robert Shurtliff," and the challenges she faced both during and after the war. From battlefield bravery to her historic pension request and lecture tours, Deborah Sampson's legacy is one of radical defiance and quiet heroism. Today we have proof that George Washington wasn't the only genetic freak running around the battlefield during the Revolutionary war. Because Deborah Sampson was out there too, not letting a little thing like the lack of testicles get in the way of her fighting for her country. She may have missed most of the war, but she showed up in the end and put in work for America, we we gotta give respect to this tough ass broad. But we still make the jokes. Enjoy!

The history of the American Revolution is peppered with the stories of women who perform acts of heroism in service to the cause of Liberty. Women such as Mary Ludwig Hays, Margaret Corbin & Deborah Sampson are among the many heralded for their service. Many more women served as information gatherers for General Washington, and today, Aly Riley, auther of "She Spies; Women of the Revolution" will join us to discuss the role of women in the spy rings of General Washington.

Tales of History and Imagination

Hi all apologies for the delay. I've been unwell for a couple of weeks, and am only just bouncing back now. This week, on what was originally planned for Transgender Day of Remembrance (two weeks ago) we continue my annual Trans history episode. In 2022 I started this series replying to a foolish claim Trans people were a recent phenomenon. My take, there have always been people we'd now recognise as Trans.  My list of examples veered from groups, like the Galli, to individuals - like Eleanor Rykener.  Society once had places for Trans people - more often than not religious orders - but the church dismantled a lot of this at the Council of Nicaea.  Or at least they did so for Trans women. How did the church react to history's Trans men? Today, with a little help from a couple of historical Trans cowboys and a few others, we take a look.  Sources Include:  The last six or seven minutes of this episode owes a huge debt to Nate Hale's The Conspirators episode ‘The Secret Life of Pope Joan.' Nate does this way better than I do, and in much greater detail. Go check his episode out.  Susan Stryker's ‘Transgender History' was invaluable. I used this English Heritage. Org article to fact check the Galli. This American Battlefields article on Albert Cashier  This NY Times article on Charley Parkhurst And this National Women's History Museum article on Deborah Sampson, written by Debra Michals. I'll add a handful of other articles later. Much of this episode was put together from leftover notes from the TDOR 2022 episode.  Support the show on Patreon for $2 US a month and get access to exclusive content, or Try our 7 Day Free Trial.  Please leave Tales a like and a review wherever you listen. Send us a Text Message.Musket fire, soldiers yelling, chaos. It's the summer of 1782 and Robert Shurtleff lies groaning on the ground, clutching a gash in his forehead. He's been shot at least twice. He can feel a musket ball lodged in his thigh, another in his shoulder. The skirmish is over but that brings no relief to Shurtleff. A fellow infantryman rushes over in search of survivors. “Hospital,” he says. “No,” Shurtleff growls, “let me die.” But the soldier grabs Shurtleff and tosses him onto the back of a horse. Later, he winces in pain, nervous, adrenaline pumping as a doctor stitches up his head wound. The doctor is called away and Shurtleff drags himself off the cot, grabbing a penknife and a needle, he limps out of the tent and off into the woods. He'll remove the musket balls himself. It's too risky. Because, you see, Robert Shurtleff is hiding something, something big, a secret the doctor would have surely uncovered. Robert Shurtleff is not a man at all. He's actually a woman named Deborah Sampson and women are strictly forbidden from fighting in the continental army. But did you know, Deborah Sampson wasn't even the only woman to help form this great nation? Many “founding mothers” have slipped through the cracks of history. About the Book Born and raised in rural Mississippi and the even balmier climes of central Florida, Red Barber, at the age of thirty-two, became one of New York City's most influential citizens as the play-by-play announcer for the Brooklyn Dodgers. When he arrived in 1939, Barber brought the down-home drawl and idioms of his southern roots to the borough, where residents said they could walk down any street and never miss a pitch because his voice wafted out of every window and every passing car. From his colorful expressions like “rhubarb” and “sitting in the catbird seat” to his vivid use of similes—a close game was “tighter than a new pair of shoes on a rainy day”—Barber's influence on his contemporaries and the many generations of broadcasters who followed him cannot be overstated. But behind all the base hits, balls, and strikes lies a compelling story that dramatizes the shifting expectations and roles of a public figure—the sports broadcaster—as he adapted to complex cultural changes throughout the course of twentieth-century American life. Author Bio Judith R. Hiltner is professor emeritus of literature and languages at Saint Xavier University and the author of books and articles on American literature and culture, including critical and biographical studies of Herman Melville, Philip Freneau, and Deborah Sampson. James R. Walker is professor emeritus of communication at Saint Xavier University and a past executive director of the International Association of Communication and Sport. He is the author of several books, including Crack of the Bat: A History of Baseball on the Radio (Nebraska, 2015), and is the coauthor of Center Field Shot: A History of Baseball on Television (Nebraska, 2008). --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steve-richards/support

Leading with InclusionIn this episode, herdacious host Lorelei chats with Jashn Agrawal as she advocates for companies to lead with inclusive cultures, which will then garner them diverse talent. Oftentimes we hear the terms diversity and inclusion used interchangeably in DEI conversations; however, understanding the fundamental difference and interactions between the two is critical to cultivating a truly diverse and inclusive workplace. As an HR professional with a passion for inclusion-first policies, Jashn clarifies that inclusion goes beyond the numbers and focuses on nurturing appreciation for and amongst all employees. From acknowledging and addressing our unconscious bias to being consistent in our organizational core values, Jashn affirms that although inclusion is an extensive process, it's nonetheless necessary to achieve an optimal workplace. As inclusive cultures become the norm, diverse talent often follows [and stays] of its own accord, thereby benefitting both the employers and the employees. Host: Lorelei GonzalezCo-host: Jashn Agrawal, MBAJashn is an accomplished HR Leader with a strong track record of leading & supporting global teams for companies like IKEA, Burson-Marsteller, AMEX and GE. Her expertise lies in successfully leading organizational planning and development through strategic initiatives and programs.
