Hey folks Detroit Lions and the Dallas a well played game. The referee's though had a even better game, by screwing Detroit Lions. Decker the offense line did go to the ref and say he was the eligible receiver. "parlay" Shawn tells it all , even though i am a cowboys fan the lions two point conversion should of counted and lions should of took lead and won. The refs in the last 5-7 mins did dictate this game cause they blew a tripping call the previous possession called Dallas which should of been on lions . Then on the lions final drive to call 4 penalties in the last 4/5 plays. This was a tough loss but for the sake of lions fans be happy that you will be the third seed worse case. The rest of the day Shawn and I run threw all the other NFL football games and possible playoff pic scenarios The Rams squeak by barley beating the giants to hold onto the 6th seed in the NFC .. Which we all know what that means if the playoffs were today the Lions would have to play Matt Stafford and Rams. The biggest upset of the day was the Arizona Cardinals upsetting the Philly Eagles which means the lions still have a shot at the 2 seed and that means Shawn's Dallas cowboys retake over the division in NFC east. Finally, we touched on the College Playoff picture bowl games. First touching on the Alabama vs Michigan game. Shawn and I go back and forth on what we think could happen in the playoffs if Michigan beats Bama. Shawn has other ideas about the Texas and Alabama rematch. Let's be honest on the Florida State vs Georgia game was a joke. McPherson's wife Joanne, who as First Lady of Michigan State University founded Safe Place, the first shelter at a university to provide support for victims of domestic violence and stalking, died in June.“She was so dedicated to Safe Place and so committed to having it work. Of course, now after all these decades really, it's worked very well. She always had an idea, like when we got here, Beaumont Tower's bells weren't ringing, and they hadn't rung for about a year. She said, ‘What's this? The Beaumont Tower bells need to ring.' In short time, the bells were ringing, and they've rung ever since. Safe Place and the Beaumont Tower bells, and the signs at campus entrances were a couple of her accomplishments.“When we got here, for whatever reason, the signs entering campus were a set of wire structures and they looked pretty bad. Joanne never wanted things to look bad. They're now stone and permanent, and they look really good. They've been that way since about 1994, and that was Joanne saying ‘What's this?'"McPherson talks about growing up in West Michigan and always knowing he would attend MSU, just like all his siblings did. And he says “MSU opened up the world to me.” Then a stint in the Peace Corps inspired his lifetime of work on international issues. He describes working in both the Ford and Reagan White Houses. He was working for Bank of America in San Francisco after the Reagan years, and that's when the MSU presidency opened.“Running Michigan State was a dream I never really expected to even have an opportunity to do. You can imagine what my seven brothers and sisters living in West Michigan thought. By that time, unfortunately, my father and mother had passed away. I think often, and certainly did back then, how sad it was that they weren't around because, for my father especially, this would have been special.”McPherson talks about a couple of his accomplishment he's most proud of like bringing the Detroit College of Law to MSU and beginning the conversations that led to MSU's presence on Grand Rapids' Medical Mile.“The leader of this effort was Judge Dick Suhrheinrich. Without Dick Suhrheinrich we wouldn't have a law school. He is really a grand man with enormous capability. We did put that law school together. First, there was some thought it might be in Detroit, which wasn't optimal. There were some issues and ultimately it came here as an independent school.“They had some real self-identity that they were intent to protect, which I thought was reasonable. The agreement that I had with them was I would never push for there to be a closer affiliation. They may decide they wanted it, and that may be appropriate at some time, but it's not going to be MSU that pushes a closer affiliation. Before I left, they came to me and said, ‘We want a closer affiliation,' and now, after several years, it's called the Michigan State University College of Law. “The medical school idea came together in the years after I left. In my mind, the key decision and key meeting - there were several; anything like this has several key meetings - was a meeting I had with Rich DeVos in the hanger in the Grand Rapids airport where I laid out how we wanted to do this. Basically, DeVos said, ‘It's a good idea.' and it wouldn't have happened without DeVos' important key intervention in the years afterwards it unfolded.”Talk about APLU and its mission.“We're very aggressive and active in Washington on appropriations for universities, and we have a deep commitment to student degree completion, to equity, and to minority students having the same percentages of graduation rates as majority students. I'm pleased that current MSU President Stanley is on the APLU board. “Sam is a guy who we at APLU have always seen as a guy we could go to to get things done. During the pandemic, his medical expertise was invaluable. The presidents of this organization from around the country get together, and Sam was a person who could serve with real expertise and talk about the problems we were all having. Sam has always been a go-to guy. For him to come to Michigan State was just outstanding for Michigan State and for him.”What concerns you about higher education's future? What are you hopeful about? What keeps you up at night? What are some challenges and opportunities moving forward?“We need to continue to increase our graduation rates and decrease the time it takes to earn a degree. We've got to have more students graduate and do so in less time. Of course, there are cost considerations. Legislatures provide a substantially lower percentage of the cost than they once did. The Pell Grant money is helpful, and we've pushed hard for more Pell money. “There's this whole set of equity, graduation, and cost issues that, of course, I could spend all your program on because I'm so immersed in them that are of deep concern. On the other hand, there are some successes. I looked at ALPU numbers over the last 10 years under Department of Education data, and our Hispanic students over the last 10 years have grown 70 percent. The numbers for Black students haven't moved that much. The Hispanic student population has grown.“These are the kinds of issues we need to continue to really grapple with and make progress on now. We know how to graduate students better than we did. We've got the technology. I know these are important issues for Michigan State. Graduation rates here are quite high, but I know there's a commitment to make them higher.”What do you hope your legacy is as president of MSU, or do you not even worry about that kind of thing?“Well, I think if you worry about it too much, it's a mistake. There were certainly some key things that I'm very proud of. To me, ultimately, what a university presidency needs to be about is what kind of education students get. Michigan State happily and successfully educates many students, so I start there.“The law school is important, and so is beginning the work on the medical school in Grand Rapids. This place is so complex. There are so many things that I learned and was part of. As I've said several times, every project has many fathers and mothers and many contributors, so I was proud to lead Michigan State for those years.”MSU Today airs Saturdays at 5 p.m. and Sundays at 5 a.m. on WKAR News/Talk and Sundays at 8 p.m. on 760 WJR. My guests today are David and Cindy from beautiful Michigan. This was a wonderful family fun interview, very practical, informative and heart warming. They host their Something On My Mind Podcast and David is a published finance author. WATCH ON YOUTUBE "We tell offbeat stories and teach financial fitness with a side of humor.” I have spent over 20 years as a program manager delivering large scale initiatives with application and infrastructure projects for fortune 500 corporations. I hold a bachelor's degree business administration from Detroit College of Business and a master's degree in healthcare administration from Davenport University. In addition, I have spent over 20 years as a personal finance coach to help those that lacked personal finance education so that they can take control of their daily lives while planning their retirement goals. (67% of people do not have a budget and 75% of people live paycheck to paycheck and cannot afford to retire) This led me to become a published author on personal finance with my book, "I'm Not Flipping Burgers When I'm 70!" In 2012, I met my wife Cindy who at the time was abused and bankrupt. Both of us had full custody of our children and together we blended our families, developed a financial plan and rebuilt our lives to lead a successful life. We now have been happily married for eight years. During this time, we created a non-profit website, PersonalFinanceSquad.com in 2016 to educate others on the same principals carried out in my book which is centered around budgeting, debt management, retirement and home ownership. The site has detailed chapters from the book along with instructional videos and worksheets to provide a complete budget for the present and planning for the future. During our time together, Cindy with no college degree, was a client associate at Merrill Lynch and eventually became a COO of a nationally recognized high-net wealth management firm. With our success together I decided to launch the Something On My Mind podcast in 2020 to tell our story and give back to those that lack personal finance education. The show centers on practical money management in the present while saving for future retirement. The goal is to deliver information as I am right there with the listener while delivering the content with a side of humor. The state of our lives when we met 2011 - Cindy: bankrupt and abused; David divorced, custody of his son and was recently unemployed. -How did Cindy go from broke to running the operations of a national wealth firm -How we decided to create our podcast; our success and how the children are part of the business -All things finance -How we managed Cindy's accident - she was struck by a car as pedestrian -Getting through catching COVID -The success of our marriage and raising kids in a blended family -How we give back to the community and charitable causes -How did David get the knowledge to write a book -How we managed each child with the same rules while recognizing individuality -How did we execute or career and financial plans -How did David get the knowledge to write a book -How we managed each child with the same rules while recognizing individuality -How did we execute or career and financial plans

In fact, the Detroit College of Law at Michigan State University named The Geoffrey Fieger Trial Practice Institute in his honor. Nationally Recognized Legal Counsel Geoffrey's legal skill is uniquely well-known, even for a lawyer as renowned as him—he has been repeatedly featured on MSNBC, CNN, Fox, and various other networks to provide legal insight and commentary throughout his career. He has had his own program on CBS radio titled “Fieger Time,” and was featured on Fox's live court program “Power of Attorney.” Geoffrey has also frequently been in the news as a subject, as he is often called upon to represent high-profile cases on behalf of those facing impossible odds. In one of his notable cases, Attorney Fieger was able to secure acquittals for every one of Dr. Jack Kevorkian's assisted-suicide trials in which he represented the doctor. Denise Alexander-Pyle, a native and long-time resident of suburban Detroit, resides in Marion, Indiana with her husband of 25 years, Stephen in the unique home they built in 2006 after he retired from General Motors and returned to his hometown to assist in running the family farms. As an attorney for now over 41 years, Denise continued to commute between her prestigious boutique family law practice in Birmingham, Michigan, and Marion until September of 2015 when God and circumstances required that she remain in Marion full time, where her heart, their family, all reside. She maintains an office in Marion, where she can still practice some law, but with time allotted to continue to provide service to her community and always enjoy her grandchildren and other hobbies, such as cooking, art, and writing. Denise received her undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan and her law degree from the Detroit College of Law, now known as Michigan State University School of Law. However, it was her sister’s high conflict divorce when Denise was still in high school that compelled her to alter her career choice to become a journalist and instead becomes a divorce attorney. As an expert in the field of family law, her compassion and common sense personal counseling and coaching skills were actually her most significant asset to help clients through a crisis period in their life. Although raised and still a practicing Jew, Denise has been a self-directed student of spirituality since she was 14 and also attends church with her husband describing herself as a New Way Jew, in part because she sees Jesus as the Way to God and understands that love and Christ consciousness are an integral part of man’s existence on Earth.
Diva Tech Talk interviewed Dr. Rita Barrios, Chair for the Department of CyberSecurity and Information Systems, and Associate Professor, at the University of Detroit, Mercy (http://www.udmercy.edu/) graduating approximately 150 trained technology professionals each year. Rita said: “My Dad was always my biggest supporter.” The 7th child of 8 siblings in her “very strict” family, Rita admitted that she was “a little on the geeky side” in her high school years. She entered the Detroit College of Business, specializing in accounting, but dropped it in favor of a technology major. She got married, and gave birth to a daughter during her senior year of college. Rita’s several internships during that senior year (when her daughter was 6 months old) were at the Grand Trunk Western Railroad (gtw.railfan.net/), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Canadian National Railway (https://www.cn.ca/). After graduation, she became a full-time employee as a junior programmer. Grand Trunk’s IT department was eventually bought by Compuware (www.compuware.com). Rita was promoted from junior programmer to project manager (“a huge leap”). Her first large challenge was a two-year international EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) project among three cross-border entities, automating the manifest for U.S. Customs to enable trains to cross borders without stopping. She credited her immediate management for empowering this next career phase. “Anything we needed, they made sure we had.” The secret to the success of that project was digging into the details rather than becoming overwhelmed by the totality of the undertaking. “I took it a bite (byte) at a time!” Rita’s next step was as a Compuware contractor to Ford Credit (https://www.ford.com/finance) to maintain their legacy information systems, going from programmer to senior DBA. Rita also obtained her Masters of Science in Information Systems, Software Assurance at the University of Detroit, Mercy; then later completed her PhD in information science, with a focus on security assurance and cybersecurity at Nova Southeastern University (http://www.nova.edu/). “An opportunity came where I could move to academia,” Rita said. “ That’s how I landed at Detroit, Mercy.” Additionally, she received certifications from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg University, School of Public Health in data specialization, and a certificate in criminal justice and law enforcement from the FBI Detroit Citizens Academy. A single mom for 14 years, Rita is justifiably proud of her two children. “I have a daughter, now working on her PhD in Material Engineering. And I have a son, going into digital media and graphics arts.” Rita is also excited about her own cybersecurity field. “We teach is how to do investigations, how to do digital forensics/hacking. We partner with the Criminal Justice Program because you cannot have a crime without some digital piece to it, these days, and look at it from the criminal point of view. We also partner with the law school, talking about cyberlaw. “ Rita’s specialty has spun off into a side business. She runs an IT training and education consultancy, RitaBarr LLC (www.ritabarr.com) specializing in corporate IT training, and also partners with Mackinac Investigators on digital forensics investigations. “At some point, I would like to grow the business.” Ever-ambitious, Rita is also looking forward to moving to the “business side” of academia, at some point. Along the way, Rita said that “I have always been the only female in the room.” As an example, “I presented research at the Department of Defense to a bunch of military people, who were all guys. Coming up through IT, I was the only female, but I have never felt like the only female. I was never discriminated against.” This feeling changed though “when I went to the University.” There she experienced “over-talking, interruption, all of it. I have been told by my colleagues that I better ‘know my place, young lady, ’ ” she lamented. Rita recommended her approach to deal with this negative phenomenon. “I am very professional. I go into a very robotic mode, very stoic. I lay out the facts with no emotion. I plan to say.“ Rita’s focused leadership lessons/advice currently include: “Spend time to get to know people. Find out their strengths, and where they belong.” “Bring the best people around you; then get out of their way.” “If you think about it --- that the project’s too big --- you will not achieve what you want to achieve. So, whatever comes, just take it in.” “Stay flexible. There is nothing you can’t overcome; nothing is impossible.” And summing up: “There are no shortcuts.” For Rita, success is always about hard work.
