As we soon found out in our conversation with Dr. Langley, however, attempting to label her skills and areas of expertise is an expedition that leads to unexpected discoveries. Dr. Langley is the Maryland State Underwater Archeologist and in that capacity explores local shipwrecks. Maryland, by the way, is one of only nine states to have this position. She's also a Master Scuba Diver Instructer, a Master Spinner, experienced in blacksmithing and wood turning and, yes, a beekeeper. She also knows a lot of cool stuff about pirates! This week's story involves the homicide of a 19-year-old Maryland man named Joseph Miranda. After graduating from high school in Two thousand Five, Nineteen year old Joseph took a job with a local landscaping company called Outside Unlimited. He decided to temporarily forego college and just work through the summer. He wanted to become a landscaping architect. Joseph did well and was promoted to foreman within months of starting. On July twentieth, two thousand six, Joseph left home early and said goodbye to his mother Adrienne Miranda. She had no idea it would be the last time she would ever see him alive again. After arriving home from work that evening, Adrienne was surprised when she came home to an empty house. Usually Joseph would be home. She just assumed he was out with friends. But her life changed forever when she received a call from Joseph's father Bob at eleven that night. He had horrible news. Joseph was killed in an accident at his job. Adrienne then also received a call from the Maryland State Police notifying her that Joseph had died around 3:30 p.m. that afternoon.According to The Baltimore Sun, police learned that near the end of Joseph's shift on July twenty, he was given a task that needed to use the Bobcat to complete. A coworker told him he needed to finish a project before giving the Bobcat to Joseph. The coworker said Joseph tried to remove the driver and jumped onto one of the wheels of the Bobcat, slipped and fell. He was then ran over. Although there were different witness statements, several accounts claimed Joseph and his coworker got into an argument over the Bobcat. This led to the coworker getting angry and shoving Joseph, who then feel and was then killed by the Bobcat. The coworker would end up giving four different accounts of what happened. In one version, he claimed they were just playing around and Joseph was accidentally killed. Joseph's mother Adrienne told Dateline she does not believe her son just slipped off the machine to his death. The Maryland State police ruled the death an accident. And this didn't sit well with Adrienne. Although no criminal charges were filed against the coworker, Adrienne vowed to fight for her son. Adrienne began her own investigation. Eventually, she learned that a state medical examiner named Dr. Ali had received additional evidence and ruled the case a homicide. He contacted law enforcement and then wrote, “As the death was caused by the action of another person, the manner of death is best re-classified as a homicide.”However, The State's Attorney for Baltimore County, Scott Shellenberger, said, “there will be no further inquiry, no arrest, no grand jury, no trial, no criminal charges” in Joseph's death. This was after he received notice of the case being reclassified as a homicide. For some reason, Prosecutor Scott Shellenberger has refused to prosecute Godwin. Fewer tasks are more consuming than putting together a comprehensive budget, but some people have the POV and tenacity to do it meaningfully. While we're waiting on the looming outcome of Biden's infrastructure plan to net out, I wanted to know how in IRL state and local money was allocated. Do these budgets and their allocation truly affect people? How does it work and connect with these larger federal policies and changes? I GOTTA KNOW MAN. This week I have on Ted Walsh a budget analyst for the state of Maryland to help demystify the process. Ted's scope of work includes carving out budgets for the state of Maryland and before taking on that role, he was entrenched in the DC nonprofit world discussing immigration reform. As a MD native and Baltimore resident, he's developed a deep love for the community and embedded himself into its fiber to make a hands-on change. Tune into as fascinating conversation about change at the state and city level, what it's like to run for local office and some candid thoughts on paths to citizenship and reunification post-Trump. Is it true that money changes everything? You'll have to find out in our chat. :) Lean more about Ted Walsh: ON FB LINKED IN --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Victor Velazquez is the Chief Executive Officer of the Maryland State Bar Association. I invited him to join me on this podcast because I just felt like he has been doing an exceptional job leading so many attorneys across the state and leading an organization that made me feel so welcome because, as I say in the podcast, I am barred in DC and joined the Maryland bar as a voluntary member and at first, I thought I would feel out of place but because of the leaders at the MSBA I felt right at home. So today Victor answers the questions of how he prioritizes the health and wellness of lawyers that he serves, his team, and himself so that we, as lawyers, can maximize our fitness to practice. And this is an important conversation for me to put out there because we don’t really talk about the leadership (at least as much as we should) behind every state bar, who really strive to serve us and bring us together. In today's bonus tips we're talking about easy alternatives to using plastic. If you look around you'll notice that there's plastic everywhere! Kerri Hesley joins me and gives us tips on how we can cut back on using plastic in our everyday lives. Instead of using the single use plastic bags at the grocery store buy the reusable bags for 99 cents. Keep them in your car and wash them periodically. There is a bill at the Maryland State legislature that is proposing to ban single use plastic bags. It is similar to the bill that was past in California. Once you get used to bringing your reusable bags you won't even notice not having the plastic bags. Stop using plastic cutlery. Plastic cutlery is not recyclable. Visit your recycling facility or look online for your county to learn what they view as acceptable to recycle. Use refillable water bottles. There are water refilling stations at airports now. Don't drink sodas our of plastic bottles. Instead drink them out of aluminum cans. Don't use plastic baggies but rather Tupperware for storage. Buy produce that is not packaged in plastic. If you have an issue you feel passionate about, let people know!

As the 2018-2019 school year draws to a close, The Final Score podcast welcomes the two state team champions from the county for the spring season, the Urbana girls track team and the Oakdale boys track team. The Hawks and the Bears were two of the most dominant teams in the county all season, winning just about every big meet in the state, often in convincing fashion. Last Saturday at Morgan State, the Urbana girls and the Oakdale boys followed their state indoor team titles by winning the same championships at the outdoor meet. The Urbana girls scored 41 points over the last hour of the meet to win the Class 4A team championship with 68.5 points, while the Oakdale boys rolled to the 2A team title with 85. On this week's episode, coach C.J. Ecalono and sophomore Ella Auderset of Urbana and coach Dave Lillard and junior Kyle Lund of Oakdale share with host Greg Swatek their stories of success, perseverance and determination. How did Auderset rebound after suffering a terrible fall in closing stretch of the 400-meter dash that cost her championship and a possible record? And how was Lund feeling after running 6,400 meters on his way to three titles and a second-place finish over two days in the state meet? And how do Ecalono and Lillard manage their large teams and put their athletes in the best positions to succeed? The Final Score is presented by Players Fitness and Performance (PFP).
Do you have pet names for your plants? Amy the Amaryllis. Jerry the geranium. Once I bought some dahlias at a private plant sale. Before I drove away, I rolled down the window to ask for the sellers name; they’ve been my “Doris“ dahlias ever since. Doris and I have stayed in touch over the years, and I have to say; she’s as lovely as the bloom on those dahlias. So whether they are called Howard or Bertie, Harry or Liz; if you’ve named your plants, you are not alone. The gesture of honoring a loved one or the little laugh evoked from a cleverly name to plant all add it to the joy of gardening. There’s nothing wrong with that. Brevities #OTD On this day in 1855 Paul de Longpré (Books By This Author)was born. Known as the "King of Flowers", de Longpré painted exceptional portrayals of roses (his first love), and wildflowers (his second love). If you look at his work, you'll find somewhere in his composition his signature accent – a bumblebee. After exhibitions of his work on the East Coast, reviewers praised, "No one but a poet could paint as he does." "De Longpré has the rare gift of reading down to the heart of his loved flowers." De Longpré was raised in northern Paris. His father left the family early one - a hurt that de Longpré hid from reporters; telling them that his father was dead. De Longpré's family was artistic and he helped his mother financially by painting silk fans with his brother. (The fans were quite fashionable at the time). After marrying the delightful Josephine Estievenard, de Longpré was mentored by Francois Rivoire. Like Rivoire, de Longpré’s mastery of watercolors are said to rival the richness of oil painting. When de Longpré lost his savings in a Paris bank crash, he immigrated with his wife and their children to the United States - ultimately calling Hollywood their home in 1900. At the time, Hollywood was a brand new development just west of Los Angeles - De Longpré built a lavish Mission Revival style villa and it quickly became the most famous estate on the boulevard. He bought an additional three blocks of property from socialite Daeida Wilcox Beveridgein exchange for three of his flora watercolors. On the property, de Longpré planted over 4000 rosebushes the muses for his work – and he turned the main level of his magnificent home into an art gallery. The place became a sensation; a hub for elites, as well as a tourist destination, with over 8,000 visitors a month. De Longpré’s guests were greeted by a very courteous Japanese butler who would hand them a list of the paintings titles and prices. Pauls daily habit was to get up in the morning and pick flowers with his youngest daughter, Pauline, by his side. After creating more than 2,000 paintings, de Longpré died in 1911. Josephine and the girls sold the house and sadly agreed to a final exhibition of de Longpré's work, which included his masterpiece the Cherokee Rose. It was a Josephine's lifelong regret to part with these paintings. Thirteen years later, the architectural wonder of the de Longpré's villa and the lavish gardens were all destroyed to make room for commercial buildings and parking lots. #OTD On this day in 1734, Elsa Beate Bunga was born. She was a pistol. Married to the handsome Swedish Count Sven Bunga, Elsa was a passionate amateur botanist. At her Beataberga mountain estate, she had many large greenhouses. Bunga wrote a book called, "About the Nature of Grapevines", which brought her notoriety and authority. She even corresponded with fellow Swede Carl Linnaeus (who is almost 30 years older than her). Bunga also drew attention because of her way of dressing. Like the women of her time she wore a skirt, but she distinguished herself by dressing as a man from the waist up. When King Gustav III (1771 - 1792), inquired about a peculiarly dressed woman at the Royal Swedish opera, Bunge boldly replied, "Tell his Majesty that I am the daughter of statesman Fabian Reder and married to statesman Sven Bunga". Unearthed Words #OTD Maryland selected the Black-Eyed Susan as the State Flower. This was after much debate. The Baltimore Sun, among many others, was not in favor of the Black-Eyed Susan selection, writing dismissively: "Susan came to Maryland, not on the Ark or the Dove, but a migrant from the Midwest mixed in clover and hayseed." Before the plant received it's popular common name, there was a song by John Gay called Black-Eyed Susan - popular in British maritime novels. The song tells of a love story between Susan and her Sweet William. As the two say their final farewells before his departure on a long sea voyage, Susan had crying and had black circles around her eyes. Today, their stories continue; folklore sharing that Black-Eyed Susans and Sweet William share the same bloom time to celebrate their undying love for each other. Here are a few verses: All in the Downs the fleet was moor'd, The streamers waving to the wind When black-eyed Susan came on board; Oh! where shall I my true love find? Tell me, ye jovial sailors, tell me true, If my sweet William sails among your crew. William, who high upon the yard, Rock'd with the billows to and fro, Soon as her well-known voice he heard,; He sigh'd, and cast his eyes below; ;- The cord glides swiftly through his glowing hands, ' And quick as lightning on the deck he stands. ' So the sweet lark, high pois'd in air, Shuts close his pinions to his breast, If chance his mate's shrill call he hear, And drops at once into her nest, The noblest captain in the British fleet, Might envy William's lips those kisses sweet. O Susan, Susan, lovely dear, My vows shall ever true remain; Let me kiss off that falling tear; We only part to meet again. . Change as ye list, ye winds, my heart shall be The faithful compass that still points to thee. Believe not what the landsmen say, Who tempt with doubts thy constant mind; They'll tell thee, sailors, when away, In every port a mistress find. Yes, yes, believe them, when they tell thee so, For thou art present wheresoe'er I go. If to fair India's coast we sail, Thy eyes are seen in di'monds bright; Thy breath is Afric's spicy gale, Thy skin is ivory so white. Thus, ev'ry beauteous object that I view, Wakes in my soul some charm of lovely Sue. Though battle calls me from thy arms, Let not my pretty Susan mourn; Though cannons roar, yet safe from harms. William shall to his dear return. Love turns aside the balls 'that round me fly; Lest precious tears should drop from Susan's eye. I The boatswain gave the dreadful word, The sails their swelling bosoms spread; No longer must she stay aboard They kiss'd she sigh'd; he hung his head Her less'ning boat unwilling rows to land; Adieu! she cries, and wav'd her lily hand. Increase your tree diversity by planting a Kentucky Coffee Tree. Something Sweet Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart The story of de Longpré is quite enchanting. There are two images in particular about de Longpré that stuck with me. The first is such a quintessentially French image. De Longpré is riding his bicycle, peddling out to the garden with an easel on his back, a hat on his head, on his way to paint the flowers he loved so much. The second image is a photo of de Longpré in the garden with his little daughter Pauline. In an article in the Overland Monthly, we get a little glimpse into their relationship. "de Longpré’s youngest daughter, is a bright little miss about eight years old. If you ask for her name, she will say it is Pauline; but the only name she has ever called at home is “Joujou”; the French word for toy or plaything. She is idolized by her famous father, and when he walks in the garden she is always by his side." Thanks for listening to the daily gardener, and remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

The new 5 star rating system for Maryland schools is now live. This morning, Cheryl Bost, Maryland State Education Association President and Elementary School teacher from Baltimore County, discussed the new state school report card & 5 star grading system.
In 1999 I was a senior in high school and I had a huge opportunity in front of me. I was about to play in the Maryland State tennis championship tournament. I had been playing tennis competitively for the past nine years. I had hit a bunch of forehands bunch of backhands overhead volley serves all the strokes. I had spent years practicing but there was something that happened when I played tournaments. Sometimes I would do really well and I would win matches. And then there were times where I would lose to players that I could have beaten. I couldn't tell the difference in my performance. Why did I win sometimes and lose other times? There was something crucial that was missing which I wasn't aware of. Up until this tournament. So here I was about to play in this tournament that I was seeded number two which means I was expected to come in second place. But I knew I could win this tournament. I knew I could be the Maryland State tennis champion and my mom found this ad in the newspaper. This was back in the day before the Internet was super popular. She found an ad in the paper that was for a sports psychologist. She called her and I ended up going to her house which was about 20 minutes away from my house and meeting with this woman, C.J. Lockman. I would go to her house weekly for several weeks. I sat on her couch and we would talk about mental strategies to improve my performance. We would do things like visualization where I would picture myself winning the Maryland State tennis tournament and not just picture it. I would feel it. I would rehearse this vision over and over again even at home before I would go to sleep at night. I really would get into the feeling of it. We also did things like anchoring technique which is a quick way to shift your focus. And for me and what we talked about a shift is fixing my strings so I would look at my racquet and I would fix my strings to trigger a positive emotion and get me back into focus. And we also used techniques such as mantras where I would say positive things about my forehand works perfectly and smoothly and we would talk about how many times I had hit a four forehand how many times I had a backhand so on and so forth just really reminding myself that I had the ability to win and becoming the woman that could win this tournament. So I spent a lot of time mentally preparing for this tournament and then the day arrived where the two where it was time to play in the tournament in Baltimore Maryland. And this was in May. So the weather was beautiful was crisp. The sun was out. We didn't have any rain. The whole tournament. And we got there and I won the first couple matches pretty easily as expected. And then I was in the finals and in the first set I went down three games to one and I went back to my strings. I started to focus. I got into tune and I turned it on and I got into the zone. I was hitting forehands angles coming to the net. I had a whole strategy there and I won the next five games and I won the first set 6-3 and I went on to win the second set 6-2. I easily won this tournament it was the first tournament I had ever won like a breeze and the amazing thing was I was calm throughout the entire tournament. I wasn't nervous. It was I had mentally prepared so much that all I needed to do was show up as if my body already knew what to do and so it became very clear to me the difference in the experience of playing in this tournament in comparison to so many other tournaments's that I had played earlier in my tennis career. I believe the most underutilized resource is within us and it's our mental preparation. Whether it be with your job. Sure you've sent a bunch of emails we've made a bunch of phone calls we know what to do. It's not that I didn't know how to hit forehands right. It's just that I didn't take the time to mentally prepare. Pick any area of your life that is maybe not going as smoothly as you want whether it be your relationships or your health and what's missing a lot of the time is that we haven't actually set ourselves up with a strategy with how to utilize our internal resources focusing techniques you know the thing is is that it sounds so incredibly simple yet it's so difficult to get focused especially in today's world with so many distractions. Focus is the most important element of excellence. What's probably getting in your way right now is that you're not focusing properly. If there is an area that you're stuck in is that you're not focusing properly. Let's flip this for a moment. Think of an area in your life that you're doing really well in and you're happy about how much attention and focus do you give that area to your life. Now it might not seem like you give a lot of attention and focus to that area of your life becomes because it comes so easily and naturally to you because you naturally focus on what you want and care about in this particular area. So if you're excelling in a certain area you're doing a really good job at focusing and maybe even you've gotten to the point where you don't even have to think so much because it's become so natural to you the other day I was at one of my friend's house and I was there with my son and she has three kids and her daughter who's about eight or nine years old got a splinter in her toe and she was crying and saying, "Mommy my foot hurts. I'm in so much pain." And she was focused on the pain in her toe and she was crying. And my son went to go give her a hug. In a moment she shifted from crying and being upset to oh and her face lit up because she saw my son approach her and hug her now it wasn't that the pain in her foot went away but she shifted her focus and attention and it changed her state. It was amazing to watch how quickly we can shift our focus and that's where our power is. Today I want to invite you to hone in on an area that you're not giving a lot of attention to. Maybe you're thinking about the problems in that area and start to focus on mentally preparing yourself for success and creating positive images around that area of that you want to focus on and creating a positive mantra and shifting a thought a negative thought to a positive thought we can change our focus at any given moment. Tony Robbins says, "What's wrong is always available and so is what's right." And it depends on where you put your focus on what you focus on you feel. So if you're not feeling so great about something you can change your focus - that's where your true power is.

This week the 4th Circuit Court, ruling en banc, ruled that a Maryland State law banning "assault weapons" is Constitutional. The Court ruled that those weapons were "military" in nature and therefore they are not covered by the restrictions of the 2nd Amendment. Conservatives are outraged. Progressives are ecstatic. Who is correct? Is it as simple as "I am conservative therefore the Court is wrong" or "I am progressive so the Court is right?" Did the 4th really ignore the precedents of Heller and other cases dealing with the 2nd Amendment? In order to understand the issue, one has to consider two competing syllogism and their underlying axioms: (A) All guns are military weapons. Ownership of military guns should be restricted to the military. Therefore the individual ownership of all guns should be restricted. Or (B) All guns are military weapons. The Militia is a military unit. Individual ownership of all guns are protected by the 2nd Amendment. Remember that in order to reach a valid conclusion, the basic assumptions of the axiom must be true. If the underlying presumption is false, the logic, regardless of how brilliant, will reach an invalid conclusion. Did the Court base its ruling in a good axiom or upon a flawed presumption?
Neill Franklin is now the Executive Director of LEAP- Law Enforcement Against Prohibition. And he certainly has Law Enforcement bona fides. Thanks to Neill for his service.
