SUMMARY: The Long Road Home In the thirteenth episode of this Podcast Series about the Battle of Sadr City on April 4th, 2004, Duane France Host of Head Space And Timing interviews Eddie Lazzari for this capstone wrap up episode. When the National Geographic series "The Long Road Home" was scheduled to release, I wasn't sure I was ready for it. So I decided to stand up and face it. I created a Closed Facebook Group 04-04-04 and decided to put this Podcast series together as a way to talk to those who served on April 4th, 2004, and their family members. In the sixth episode of this Podcast Series about the Battle of Sadr City on April 4th, 2004, I sat down with Sylvia Macias and the host of Head Space And Timing, Duane France. Sylvia approached me with a story she really wanted to tell. This is a story of two brothers, two of her sons. Robert her oldest son was killed in action on April 4th, 2004. Her youngest son Jeremy was lost to suicide. Veteran Suicide is an epidemic and we need to take a stand. To stand by and with those who are hurting and their families. We are all relatively familiar with the loss of life on the battlefield. Many soldiers are killed due to small arms ambushes, rocket-propelled grenades, IED's, and even accidents on the battlefield. These losses are hard to take, hard to accept, and leave a gaping hole in the lives of those friends and families left behind. Suicide is much harder to wrap your arms around. The loss and pain may be the same but there is a different set of emotions around suicide that makes it particularly hard to talk about. Feelings of regret, anger, and even shame. It is hard to talk about, Veteran suicide. It is a growing epidemic in this country but needs to be discussed. Where do we start in doing that? Sylvia displays so much courage sharing the story of both her sons. Robert and Jeremy both died fighting a battle, they were just on different battlefields. Our hope is that you will be able to learn something from our conversation. If nothing else, just know that there are others out there that need help, perhaps one of them is you. Remember that you are never alone! IN THIS PARTICULAR EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: Bruce Wayne and Batman are two different personalities but both exist in the same man and each serves a purpose. The modern American warrior has the struggle of having to be a hardened fighter when deployed and balance it with being a civilized family man when they are home. Duane France talks to Jeff about the difference between these alter egos and split personality disorders. They also talk about how transitioning veterans are treated like dysfunctional lunatics and how some actually are. This episode balances the serious nature of mental health and some light-hearted discussion about the other man that our combat veterans can be. Duane had some connectivity issues in the first few minutes of the show that makes his audio a little rough. This clears up quickly and does not affect the sound for the majority of the show. CYPOV Podcast is dedicated to helping Veterans become just as successful out of uniform as they were when they were in. Often times becoming successful means you have to ask for help or seek professional help to work through some rough spots in your life. This week we take a closer look at networking. Ask yourself, how can networking save a life? This week Eddie has the pleasure of sitting down with Duane K. L. France Director of Veteran Services at Family Care Center, a private mental health counseling agency specializing in the unique needs of military service members, veterans, and their families. He is also the Executive Director of the Colorado Veterans Health and Wellness Agency, a 501(c)3 Nonprofit affiliated with the Family Care Center. Duane is a retired Army Noncommissioned Officer and combat veteran, having served in deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, North Africa, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. After retirement, he served as Program Director for the Colorado Veterans Resource Coalition, a 501(c)3 Nonprofit that provides emergency and transitional housing to veterans participating in programs at the local Department of Veterans Affairs clinic. Since transitioning to full-time clinical mental health counseling, Duane has provided mental health counseling services to the Colorado Fourth Judicial District Veteran Trauma Court. Duane is passionate about veteran mental health and feels strongly that those who have served in the military can continue to provide value to their community long after that service has ended. IN THIS PARTICULAR EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: What is the big deal around Networking? We all hear about networking and how important it is for your career, finding a job, making connections, etc. Many, however, lose sight of the fact that networking can also lead to finding the help you need or helping someone in your life you care about find the help they are looking for. Many veterans are skittish about seeking help of any kind even if they know deep down inside that they need to if they truly want to get out of the rut they are in. Then you pile on the idea of seeking that help from someone you don't know, or trust and well, we all know how that road ends. What if however, you were that veteran needing help. Would you be more inclined to talk to someone that has been recommended to you by someone you know and trust? You probably would take it into consideration at the very least right? The power of a network is incredible! It isn't just for finding your next job or girlfriend. It can truly save someone's life. We first met Duane at a VA Mental Health Summit in Colorado Springs in 2018. We had heard of him through his Twitter presence @ThCounselingVet, knew he did his own podcast titled Head Space and Timing, was a combat Veteran, a licensed therapist and an author of Combat vet don't mean crazy: veteran mental health in post-military life and found out he is a heck of a nice guy. While it took over a year for us to get together and record this podcast and another 9 months to get it out we are proud to finally get him on our small channel. Meanwhile, Duane has dropped over 165 podcasts and published a second book, Head Space and Timing: Veteran Mental Health from a Combat Veteran Perspective

For the second installment of this 3-part series on mental health and well-being, US combat veteran turned mental health counselor, podcaster and author Duane France joins Christopher. They share a powerful conversation about living a life of service, the challenges faced by veterans who leave the military and the power of having purpose and meaning. “The military's purpose is not to kill and destroy. It's to protect and preserve.” - Duane France On Veteran Stereotypes When asked about what he would want the average American to know about the people in the military, Duane said that they are just like everybody else. Sadly, people like to stereotype the military veteran in three ways. One, some would think of the veteran as a berserker suffering from PTSD. Sometimes, other people treat them as victims that need taking care of for the rest of their lives. And then there is the stereotype as a hero. “There's just a lot of stereotypes that go along with especially current era military… and it's just simply not true.” - Duane France Not So Different All veterans want is for people to understand what they live through. Duane's clients would say that they want people to know what they experience and to hear their stories. But at the same time, they don't know how to tell these, feeling like no one can really understand the struggles of a veteran. To help a military veteran reintegrate into civilian life, it is best to not treat them differently. They want to be seen not as victims or as villains, but as the average American with interesting stories. Finding Purpose After Service No matter how unique their stories go, veterans will always struggle to regain their footing on civilian soil. The transition is the hardest part, but with the help of people around them, they can achieve a new purpose. Some of them can even become amazing and legendary entrepreneurs. “When we leave the military, we wanna find a place for ourselves in the world. We wanna find purpose and meaning in our lives because what we did was really meaningful.” - Duane France To hear more about the separation of war from the warrior and why veterans make great entrepreneurs from Duane, download and listen to the episode. Following in the footsteps of immediate family, Duane France joined the Army prior to September 11, 2001. When the World Trade Center towers fell, France was stationed in Germany, away from the immediacy of GWOT planning, but ready to serve, wherever, and whenever. It would be a few years before he'd be "in the fight," but as with most people who served post-9/11, his time would come, with deployments to both Iraq and Afghanistan during some of the bloodiest times of both campaigns. His experiences during those deployments, along with witnessing the effects of war on his fellow soldiers, would eventually lead him to the mental health profession. Today, Duane France is retired from the Army, and serves as a mental health counselor for veterans in Colorado. "The reason you join the military, isn't the reason you stay." The math is one level of judging your choice to transition. The second level is meaning. The military gives and imbues an incredible amount of meaning on it's members. No Fortune 500 corporation has the level of reverence, deference, and persistence as any military service. The military has it's own meaning, but you must find your own meaning before the uniform. That is where you make the honest choice about transitioning. A few weeks ago, Duane France made this post about "The Traveler", someone on the road and looking to transition. But when they got to the marketplace of options and choices, there were overwhelmed and vastly underserved. The sea of confusion prevented the Traveler from finding what they truly needed. http://veteranmentalhealth.com/2017/07/27/starving-at-the-feast-a-parable-of-military-transition/ Transitioning out of the military can be exactly like this story. Fortunately, there are those like Duane & others there to help guide veterans through the marketplace, to find the meaning the always had within. Read it, then reach out to help or get help if you need it. SHOW NOTES [00:00:28] Today's tactic continues from the end of the conversation to the last episode. Today's tactic is to answer one question: Is it worth it? [00:01:39] The idea of a career is you take a few jobs together and create a career. If you look at our time in the military, within five to seven moves, you're retirement eligible. [00:02:33] I talk about expression, assistance, and impact by answering these three questions: Expression- how do I best express my strengths and my power; Assistance- how can I best help others; and then Impact- how can I best change the world? [00:06:07] Many will say it is worth it, and many will say no. But we have to help ourselves and our fellow members in uniform not assume a default decision. Not step into their own lives for doubt and for fear. [00:06:24] You're used to to the uniform, but that should not be the reason why you stay. You should stay because it is the best expression of your strength and your power.

SUMMARY: Changing Hearts & Minds Podcast host Jeff and Head Space and Timing Podcast host Duane France team up to discuss the alter ego that combat veterans have. The struggles of not being self-aware and the dangers of the modern world for those who struggle with both of them. We continue and conclude our interview with retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Duane France, discussing his transition out of the army and into mental health counseling. In the second half of the interview we dive into: How veterans sometimes hold themselves back by not allowing themselves to make an impact on others' lives. The cohort of 9/11 veterans, their strengths, and their impact. The irrepressible sense of self tied to being a veteran, and where it fits in among our other ideas of who we are. General Mattis's mention of "Post-traumatic growth" And much more... By far though, my favorite portion of part 2 is discussing the importance of finding both meaning and purpose. These two ideas come together and without one or the other we hamper our feeling of hope. Duane breaks down the distinction between the two and gives examples of what life is like when you have one, but not the other. In episode 25 I'm joined in the studio by Duane France, a retired Sgt. 1st Class who has built a career as a mental health professional after leaving the service. Duane has continued to serve the veteran community in a myriad of ways. He's currently a mental health professional working at a private practice in Colorado Springs. Second, he's the Director of Veteran Services at The Family Care Center where he specializes in caring for veterans and their families. Third, he manages a program that provides counseling to his local veteran court. Finally, he writes the Headspace and Timing blog featured on VeteranMentalHealth.com. In part 1, Duane and I discuss is time in service and how that experience pushed him towards a career in mental health counseling, while touching on the following topics: The challenges that a serviceman can face when joining the military during wartime and how that can affect the course of their career and their perspective of what it means to serve, especially as their branch transitions to "peace-time" service. How the constant high-speed training and deployment schedule can affect a transitioning veteran leaving the military. How much I sucked at garrison life. How we love going 0 to 60, but we're horrible at going from 60 to 0. The importance of being flexible and open to several possibilities when planning for your future career and lifestyle How your sense of self shifts during the transition into civilian life. There's a lot of great storytelling in Part 1 and Part 2. I hope you enjoy! Important Links: Headspace and Timing Blog The Family Care Center in Colorado Springs
Throughout his extensive military and civilian experiences, Duane France has found that one principle continues to stand true time and time again: “Audacity is the key to victory in battle.” Duane is a retired Army Noncommissioned Officer. During his military service, he participated in five combat and operational deployments. Now, working as a Mental Health Therapist, Duane found that his unique blend of experiences and training have led him to be a successful mentor, advocate, and counselor to an underserved population in our country – our fellow Veterans. Since his time working as a Mental Health Therapist and Advisor with the Colorado 4th Judicial District Veteran Trauma Court, Duane has established himself as a Veteran Mental Health Thought Leader. On a daily basis, in person and through his writing, he uses his experiences and expertise to bring awareness to Veteran mental health, and act as a voice on behalf of his fellow brothers and sisters in arms. In Duane's words "I truly believe that the numerous difficulties that some Veterans experience, including unemployment, homelessness, and transitioning difficulties, are all related to their mental health in some form or fashion. It is my mission to ensure Veteran mental health does not go unnoticed in our country".
SUMMARY: CYPOV Podcast is dedicated to helping Veterans become just as successful out of uniform as they were when they were in. Duane is a retired Army Noncommissioned Officer and combat veteran, having served in deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, North Africa, and Bosnia-Herzegovnia. We all hear about networking and how important it is for your career, finding a job, making connections etc. Many, however, loose sight of the fact that networking can also lead to finding the help you need or helping someone in your life you care about find the help they are looking for. Many veterans are skittish about seeking help of any kind even if they know deep down inside that the need to if they truly want to get our of the rut they are in.
