Here comes Brakkus… and there goes Brakkus! In this episode of Wrasslin' Raw, the boys sit down to a mediocre episode of Monday Night Raw, filled with mediocre talent like the DOA, Vader, the Headbangers, and Dustin Runnels. D-Lo Brown has a great showing against Terry Funk, while the Brawl For All keeps burning through careers. Mrs. Yamaguchi-san pays a little attention to Val Venis, and the Undertaker starts to show his true colors. A one-off appearance from King Mabel is too much for anyone!

Who's looking forward to a tag team royal rumble match? In this episode of Wrasslin' Raw, the bracket season is in full swing in the lead up to the King of the Ring. Dustin Runnels, Droz, Jeff Jarrett, and Chainz have mediocre matches, X-Pac is back in the ring, and Val Venis continues to titillate the fans. The Undertaker, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Mankind, and Kane all end up in a Hell in a Cell match, while Paul Bearer works hard to hit the pay window. Conspiracies abound in this episode!

This episode was written as an epic Pride Season gift to our beloved Patreon subscribers, but given recent Supreme Court rulings and the fresh wave of anti-LGBTQ+ mouth diarrhea that SCOTUS fuckery spawned, it seemed an important story to release into the wild. Because while it might sound like a joke, few things are more epic, gayer, AND more prescient in these polarized times than the largely forgotten sliver of wildly queer pro wrestling history called “The Goldust Era,” which officially began on October 15, 1995. There's even a hero in this salacious tale of WWE executives exploiting homophobia for profit: Dustin Runnels, veteran pro wrestling superstar and outspoken advocate for LGBTQ folk. Runnels' arc from a wounded little boy to Southern American hero, to the most hated man in wrestling, to redeemed role model and father of a trans kid is equal parts heartwarming and unhinged and is compelling even if you've never once watched a body slam live on Pay Per View. It's also a major thread in pro wrestling's long history of selling the gayest heat imaginable to audiences that, by and large, see themselves as heterosexual patriots with no ties to the LGBTQ community, despite participating in one of the most homoerotic art forms on the planet. Heads Up: There's hate speech and LGBTQ slurs in this episode, and not because we condone it. Kris & David are joined by Dr. Keith Lipinski (@KeithLipinski) to discuss the week that was August 26-September 1, 1998. We go on the Highway to Hell in the WWF as we talk about SummerSlam ’98 at Madison Square Garden—where Bix lucked into luxury box seats—including all of the great and not so great stuff on the show. The same night WCW had Goldberg vs Hollywood Hogan for the World title on Nitro, the WWE countered with a taped show from State College, PA. It wasn't the best show, but the story lines were good enough to make it an excellent show.  With the Undertaker, Stone Cold, Mankind, D-Lo Brown, Terry Funk, Vader, Bradshaw, Val Venis, Dustin Runnels, D-Generation X, Ken Shamrock, Savio Vega, Road Warrior Hawk and Mabel, it had plenty of star power. But unfortunately, it has had a couple of matches from Brawl 4 All. After SummerSlam in New York City, the WWF heads to Hamilton, the third largest metropolitan area in Ontario, Canada. Stone Cold Steve Austin is forced to fight through both the Undertaker and Kane. The Rock, Mankind, and Shamrock show that “one of these things is not like the other” in a steel cage triple threat match. Jeff Jarrett finally finds a look as he and Southern Justice take on D-Generation X. It’s yet another cucking story as sad boy Dustin Runnels takes on Val Venis. D’Lo Brown takes on Gangrel, a literal vampire. Vader goes out on his back against Bradshaw. We love Al Snow as he and Scorpio take on Too Much. Jacqueline is the best part of Marc Mero vs. Droz. And Edge and Owen go Canadian!Theme song “There Are Traitors in Our Midst” by Disco VietnamArt by Alexis Yavne

September 21st, 1998: With only six days to go until "Breakdown," Vince McMahon books The Brothers of Destruction to face WWF Champion "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and a partner..... if anyone volunteers to join him. The Rock, Mankind, and Ken Shamrock do battle in a Triple Threat Match to determine who will become the #1 contender for the title one week from tonight. For the first time in almost three years, the WWF decides to crown a new Women's Champion, and it will be the winner of the match between Sable and Jacqueline. In order to get a job with the company, Al Snow must defeat Commissioner Slaughter in a contest which is Sarge's specialty: The Boot Camp Match. D'Lo Brown puts his coveted European Title on the line against X-Pac as the rivalry between these two continues to escalate. Owen Hart faces Val Venis as a distraught Dustin Runnels looks on while doing commentary, and Dustin's night then proceeds to get even worse as Val introduces us to his newest movie. Jeff Jarrett goes one-on-one with Billy Gunn, who may have another trick up his sleeve before the night is over. The Oddities and Headbangers are scheduled to face each other, but an interesting turn puts the match in jeopardy. In a rare heel vs. heel tag match, Southern Justice faces The Disciples of Apocalypse, and the outcome of this one makes absolutely zero sense. Plus, Jim Cornette and Shane McMahon (unfortunately) fill in for Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler, and we get a random backstage appearance from Vince Russo! Meanwhile over on "Nitro," The Warrior hangs out with a Brutus Beefcake blow-up doll (yes, seriously)! September 14th, 1998: After two straight lackluster Saturday night episodes of "Raw," the WWF overcompensates in a big way by giving us a TV-MA episode which may be one of the greatest of all-time! Vince McMahon can no longer stand to see "Stone Cold" Steve Austin as the WWF Champion, so he hatches a plan with The Undertaker and Kane to make sure that Austin will lose the title at "Breakdown." However, "Stone Cold" may not even make it that far because the chairman orders him to face "The World's Most Dangerous Man" Ken Shamrock in tonight's main event! The Rock bickers with his Nation of Domination stablemates, and then he proceeds to further cement his face turn by going one-on-one with Kane. The Undertaker pledges to finally end his rivalry with Mankind in a No Holds Barred Match where both men are encouraged to bring sledgehammers to the ring. Triple-H defends his newly-won Intercontinental Title for the first time against his bitter rival Owen Hart. In a 2-on-1 Handicap Match, X-Pac & Chyna square off with "The World's Strongest Man" Mark Henry. Sable and Jacqueline do battle in "Raw's" first ever Evening Gown Match, with the highlight being roughly 850 wardrobe malfunctions from Jackie. Edge and Gangrel go one-on-one in an attempt to settle their rivalry while the commentators continue to play up the notion that these men may have known each other before coming to the WWF. Jeff Jarrett squares off with "Road Dogg" Jesse James in a battle of two former friends from The New Generation Era. Dustin Runnels continues to preach the word of God, but Val Venis has a surprise for him: a new adult video starring someone who is very close to Dustin. Plus, a hilarious vignette proves to us that Steven Regal is quite a manly man, and uncensored breasts are shown on The WWE Network! Meanwhile over on The TNT Network, we get one of the greatest moments in the history of "Nitro" as WCW's most iconic superstar returns to the company after a five-month absence (and the whole thing gets an in-depth analysis here on the Podcast). September 12th, 1998: "Raw" is relegated to a Saturday night for the second week in a row thanks to The U.S. Open, and the WWF responds by intentionally giving us another lackluster show. The Rock has been a hated heel for the past year, but he cuts a promo on tonight's episode where it appears that he maaaaaay be starting to shift his allegiances. In what is somehow the main event for this episode, D-Generation-X battles Kaientai in an eight-man tag match. Edge goes one-on-one with the new-look Jeff Jarrett, who continues to advise his opponents not to piss him off. Southern Justice squares off with Too Much in a rare heel-vs.-heel tag team affair. D'Lo Brown & Mark Henry team up to face The Headbangers, and Thrasher proceeds to make some uncomfortably racist comments about "The World's Strongest Man." The Oddities do battle with The D.O.A., but this epic encounter is marred by a legitimate technical fuck-up during the match. Vader steps into the ring with Dustin Runnels, who ends up getting a bit too distracted by his new nemesis Val Venis. In a rematch of their Brawl-For-All fight from a few weeks ago, Bradshaw goes up against Darren Drozdov. Marc Mero takes on Miguel Perez in a match which probably would be a better fit on "Shotgun Saturday Night" instead of "Raw Saturday Night." Plus, the WWF decides to kill some time by re-showing a match from "SummerSlam" and Al Snow (unfortunately) makes an appearance! Enjoying the Podcast? August 10th, 1998: WWF Tag Team Champions "Stone Cold" Steve Austin & The Undertaker put their belts on the line in a massive Four Corners Match against Kane & Mankind, The New Age Outlaws, and The Rock & Owen Hart. Val Venis is joined by (ugh) John Wayne Bobbitt so he can explain what happened last week when Mr. Yamaguchi-San attempted to "choppy-choppy his pee-pee." The tension within D-Generation-X continues to mount, and all five members of the group may decide that they would be better off if there was a "DX Split." Jeff Jarrett has now ditched Tennessee Lee as well as his country singer gimmick, and he debuts his newest weapon: a guitar with the phrase "Don't Piss Me Off" written on it. L.O.D. 2000 is scheduled to face Southern Justice, but Hawk's personal demons resurface and put the match in jeopardy. The Brawl For All continues with two more match-ups that no one cares about: Bradshaw vs. Marc Mero and Darren Drozdov vs. Savio Vega. The Godfather and Vader are booked to go head-to-head...... but Vader may opt to spend the night with The Godfather's ladies instead. Luna Vachon faces Jacqueline in what is surprisingly the first one-on-one women's match on "Raw" in several years. Plus, Dustin Runnels issues a statement from his new family-friendly organization Evangelists Against Television, Movies, & Entertainment (wait, how would you abbreviate that?). July 6th, 1998: The Undertaker, Kane, and Mankind all feel that they should be the #1 contender for "Stone Cold" Steve Austin's WWF Championship, so Vince McMahon puts them into a triple threat match to determine who will get the title shot. In one of the more famous moments in Attitude Era history, D-Generation-X dresses up as The Nation of Domination because blackface is apparently still acceptable in 1998. The Brawl For All continues with two more match-ups: Hawk vs. Droz and Savio Vega vs. Brakus (who you probably never knew existed). Ken Shamrock squares off with Jeff Jarrett, but a former King of the Ring surprisingly returns and seeks to injure "The World's Most Dangerous Man." The Headbangers face The Disciples of Apocalypse, who are now led by their new manager Paul Ellering. Val Venis takes on Dustin Runnels, but Kaientai and Yamaguchi-San are looking to make Val pay for flirting with Mrs. Yamaguchi-San last week. Hardcore legend Terry Funk wrestles his last ever match on "Monday Night Raw" against the chest-protector-wearing D'Lo Brown. Sable and Jacqueline get into a "Jerry Springer"-esque war of words, and Jackie decides that the only way for them to settle their feud is with a bikini contest at "Fully Loaded." Vader goes one-on-one with Bradshaw in a match-up that would have been 1,000 times more entertaining if it had taken place in The Brawl For All. The WWF debuts a brand new, ill-advised tournament of legitimate fights called The Brawl For All, and our first two contests are Steve Blackman vs. Marc Mero and Bradshaw vs. Mark Canterbury. We get a Triple Threat "King of Kings Match" between reigning King of the Ring Ken Shamrock and former Kings of the Ring Triple-H and Owen Hart (spoiler: despite it being called "King of Kings," the winner of the match may not be who you think!). Darren Drozdov goes one-on-one against a man making his WWF debut: Steven Regal! L.O.D. 2000 seek to reverse their losing streak by bringing back their long-time manager "Precious" Paul Ellering, but their mentor has an unexpected surprise for them. Val Venis takes on Kaientai member Dick Togo, although Val appears to be more interested in Yamaguchi-San's wife. Vince McMahon tells us that the WWF Title match between "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and Kane will be a First Blood Match, and Kane then speaks for the first time in 20 years to announce what he will do to himself if he loses. Later, Kane takes on "Road Dogg" Jesse James while his tag team partner Mankind squares off with Billy Gunn. After seven straight weeks of bizarre vignettes, Edge finally debuts on "Raw" against Los Boricuas member Jose Estrada............ but the match does not quite go as planned. The King of the Ring tournament continues with four quarterfinal matches: Ken Shamrock vs. Mark Henry, Jeff Jarrett vs. Marc Mero, Owen Hart vs. Dan "The Beast" Severn, and (awesomely) The Rock vs. Triple-H! An injured Paul Bearer is interviewed live via satellite from his house, but his own home may not even be a safe enough sanctuary to protect him from the wrath of The Undertaker. X-Pac goes one-on-one with Dustin Runnels in a match where the heel and face roles appear to be reversed. Jerry "The King" Lawler may finally be willing to grant Al Snow a meeting with Vince McMahon, but Al and Head will first need to defeat a tag team of Lawler's choosing at "King of the Ring." Plus, Sable has apparently been given some sort of executive position within the WWF and Mick Foley reminds us all of the fact that he used to be amazing at cutting promos. However, The Undertaker is still looking to have a face-to-face conversation with the boss, and he's willing to disrupt "Raw" as much as possible in order to get what he wants. "Summerslam" will take place in New York City two months from now, so the WWF sent D-Generation-X out into the streets of The Big Apple, where Triple-H proceeds to bust out several offensive accents. Later in the night, The New Age Outlaws are ordered to defend their WWF Tag Team Titles against L.O.D. 2000 and The Disciples of Apocalypse in a Triple Threat Match, but the Outlaws hatch a brilliant plan to get the better of their opponents. On this very day, World Championship Wrestling filed a frivolous lawsuit against the WWF, and we have all of the amusing details. Dustin Runnels is given a chance to main event "Over the Edge" if he can defeat Dude Love, but he will have to work for 30 days without receiving a paycheck if he loses. Attitude Era mainstay Val Venis finally makes his in-ring WWF debut in what turns out to be a bit of a clunky match against Scorpio. Paul Bearer and Kane head to a local medical center for some DNA testing in an attempt to definitively prove that Bearer is Kane's father, but we are only able to focus on the fact that Kane is wearing a jacket with neon purple sleeves. May 11th, 1998: Vince McMahon stacks the deck even further against "Stone Cold" Steve Austin by giving him a mystery tag team partner in his match tonight as well as appointing several guest officials for his match against Dude Love at "Over the Edge." DX continues their invasion of WCW by showing up at their headquarters in Atlanta, and Triple-H later goes one-on-one with his rival Owen Hart. In a rare Husband vs. Wife match-up, Marc Mero and Sable intend to finally settle their differences. Finally fed up with the Goldust character, Dustin Runnels burns his costume and pledges not to take any more crap from the establishment. An ECW wrestler surprisingly shows up at the WWF's door, and he has brought a friend with him. The Undertaker seeks to get some revenge on Jerry "The King" Lawler while Paul Bearer continues to insist that he is actually Kane's father. Jeff Jarrett goes head-to-head with Faarooq as "Double-J's" nemesis Steve Blackman lurks at ringside. Club Kamikaze have now been renamed Kaientai, and their debut "Raw" match is a 3-on-2 encounter against Terry Funk & Scorpio. Vader takes on NWA member Barry Windham in what turns out to be the final televised match of Windham's not-so-prestigious WWF career. Hawk battles Skull in singles action as the L.O.D.O.A. rivalry continues. Plus, we get a terrible Edge vignette and The WWE Network edits out a special commercial! Meanwhile over on "Nitro," Eric Bischoff lays down a challenge to Vince McMahon, and Diamond Dallas Page provides us with what is likely the most unintentionally hilarious promo of his career! We also talk about WWF getting kicked out of Scranton, Pennsylvania, the breakup of the Mitsuharu Misawa & Jun Akiyama tag team, Fuerza Guerrera returning to CMLL, Rob Van Dam nearly crippling himself at the ECW Arena, Marlena & Dustin Runnels shooting an angle on a Pennsylvania indie show during SummerSlam weekend, the first mention of Blitzkrieg in the Observer, a classic WCW section featuring an unforgettable Nitro, and much more. This was a great show by all means, so you’d better not miss it!!!!
