Our guest is Victor Rivera who is the Head Chef at The Bazaar by Jose Andres in New York City. Before Victor became the Head Chef at The Bazaar, he cooked Japanese food in notable restaurants, including Masa in New York City, which has 3 Michelin stars. Also, he has a very strong culinary background in French with his experiences at top restaurants such as Jean-Georges Vongerichten's Edition and Le Bernardin. At the Bazaar in New York City, Victor uniquely incorporates traditional Spanish cuisine and Japanese cuisine in the style of Spanish tapas. He marries the seemingly opposite food cultures seamlessly and creates synergies. In this episode, we will discuss how Victor got into cooking and in particular Japanese cuisine, what is special about Japanese food for him, the unique concept of marrying Spanish and Japanese cuisine, how Victor executes it so well, and much, much more!!! *** THE NOTO PENINSULA EARTHQUAKE DISASTER RELIEF As you may know, a major earthquake struck Japan's Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture on January 1st. On this episode, we're going to talk about funding… More specifically, how your nonprofit can raise dollars from private and public foundations to support your advocacy work. We're joined on this episode by Emily Harting, AFJ's Director of Foundation Relations. AFJ Team Members on This Episode: Emily Harting, Natalie Ossenfort, Victor Rivera Introducing Emily Harting Tips for Groups Working to Identify Potential Foundation Partners: Start with path of least resistance – review foundation websites. Find out who funds your organization's allies (groups whose work you admire). Connect with board members to assess their networks and seek out their advice. Review your organization's history of foundation funding and consider reapproaching former funders. Other Avenues for Foundation Research: ProPublica (free access) Instrumentl Candid Foundation Outreach Recommendations: Make the job of the foundation program officer as easy as possible. Show them clearly and succinctly the connection between the foundation's priorities and the work of your organization. It's always best to use a connection if you have one (i.e. board member or ally). Send an email introduction explaining your organization and how you think it aligns with the funder's priorities. If your organization issued a report, is in the news, or is hosting an upcoming event, you can use that to prompt outreach to a potential funder. Best Practices When Preparing for a Meeting with a Potential Foundation Partner: Brief your staff, internal participants. Create a “POP” Agenda. Purpose (of meeting) Outcome (desired results) Process (rough outline of who speaks when and about what) If it's an in-person meeting, plan to have some organizational materials ready. If possible, also have resources ready to send following the meeting to continue to build communication/relationship. Proposal Process: Understand foundation proposal guidelines and preferred templates (if any). If they don't have a template or provide guidelines, best to build a general template including: Intro paragraph with funding request ($$ and purpose: program/GOS); A brief overview of who your organization is and its history; A description of your programs and recent work you've done; Conclusion reinforcing your request. Connect your work to the foundation's mission to demonstrate shared priorities. Write clearly. If the foundation has a proposal submission portal, submit your application early in technical issues arise. Be prepared to provide a budget, proof of your 501(c)(3) status, recent audited financial statements or 990s, a board list with affiliation, a staff list, etc. What About General Operating Support (GOS)? Funders usually start with a project grant, but some will give GOS outright. Remember to keep the funder up-to-date on progress throughout the grant period and share work products (resources or reports, videos, testimonials etc). Report on the grant as requested, when requested, and with the materials requested. Your nonprofit is more likely to receive GOS after you have built a trust-based relationship with your funder. Other Practical Tips: Remember that both you and the funder are hoping your organization is a match: they want their funds to support great work! Program officers are people. You'll achieve the best results when you have a trusted relationship with each other. Ask your program officers for advice and thoughts on your strategy and programs. Don't be afraid of your funder. If you run into a challenge, tell them. They might able to assist you in overcoming it. Keep your funder in the loop. Don't be afraid to toot your own horn! Play nice in the sandbox. Be real and be realistic. The word "phygital" is the blending of the words physical and digital and refers to a product, service or experience that's a blend between both the physical and digital. For this episode's guest, Victor Rivera, phygital is the best way to describe the way in which he's blending the physical with the virtual world. Victor is a veteran collector of African art and one visit to his Opensea page (https://opensea.io/collection/africanartnft) will show you how when you buy one of his African art pieces, you'll also receive an image and an AR or augmented reality 3D file of the purchased art piece that you can then interact with in any physical space. This approach to selling a physical product tied to a- blockchain backed digital asset is likely the future of commerce and experiences as AR starts to play a bigger role in our daily lives. On this episode, Victor and I discuss his journey into crypto, his African art phygital project, his experience at NFT NYC, what the NFT space could use to improve, his work with the artist collective and where Puerto Rico is with blockchain adoption. Hola Mi gente! I had the amazing pleasure to have a little chisme with the one and only Vinny Rivera, who is a singer and songwriter in the urban music world. He mostly sings Bachata and Kizomba songs, which are danced all over the world. In this episode, he shares his artistic journey and how pursuing his passion for music, not only fulfills him but unites communities all over the world. WHO IS VINNY? Born in Boston, Massachusetts to Puerto Rican parents mentored by his Dominican stepfather, Victor Rivera also known as “Vinny Rivera” is one of the hardest working singer/songwriters. Being raised in the city's melting pot, he was exposed to a variety of musical genres such as Reggae, Jazz, Soca, R&B, Kizomba and Pop, as well as the sounds of his native and neighboring island of Dominican Republic absorbing the sounds of Salsa, Merengue, and Bachata. As a DJ at 16, he began listening intensively and studied all types of music and later connected with friends and began recording and releasing songs, eventually opening shows with a self titled group called “Vinny Dinky & Crazy Joe” aka “Miwe Productions” for world renowned acts, such as Nicky Jam, Wisin & Yandel, Zion & Lennox, Ivy Queen, to name a few. Vinny later joined the United States Air Force and his experience in Afghanistan had taught him many lessons about life and the value of time. After serving four years active duty, he focused on his music career working closely and learning from his friends and mentors such as DereVinci, Grammy winning Producer Richy Peña, Jowell y Randy, Ivy Queen, De La Ghetto, and long time friend Jorgie Milliano. He eventually found his place as a pioneer of Latin Kizomba but focused his energy on a new sound that is “Bachata Sensual”, catering to a passionate audience of dancers and music listeners alike. His growing base of fans from all parts of the world have allowed him to tour in the United States, Mexico, Europe, and Russia, and the list of places continues to grow. ORIGINAL EPISODE DESCRIPTION WHEN PUBLISHED IN JANUARY OF 2019. The Victor Rivera backstory is a raw personal history of growing up surrounded by the nefarious influences of his South Bronx neighborhood in the 1960's. Did he succumb? Did he fall? Did he subsequently triumph? Episode 14, Part 2 is a true story of this transformational journey as Realty Speak® shifts from talking profit to exploring the spirit of the person, the power of hope and the truth that we all have the capacity to live our best life. UPDATE - MARCH 25th 2021 On February 7th, 2021, a little more than 2 years after this episode was published here on Realty Speak, the NY Times published an investigative report that exposed accusations of sexual abuse and financial impropriety by Victor Rivera in connection with the not for profit Bronx Parent Housing Network (BPHN). It was titled ‘Nobody Tells Daddy No': A Housing Boss's Many Abuse Cases by Amy Julia Harris. Victor Rivera was summarily dismissed from BPHN and several follow up articles appeared in the NY Times along with an interview with Amy Julia Harris on the NY Times podcast The Daily. Then on March 24th, 2021 the Times published the article "Housing Boss Who Was Accused of Sexual Abuse Now Faces Bribery Charges" When you listen to the episode from 2 years ago, it does appear that Victor navigated an amazing transformation in his life and was providing housing for the homeless. This story would normally serve as an inspiration to others who are trying to turn their lives around. And for 2 years, I suppose it did. Now however, you read the articles and what he has been accused of - Victor's good story then transforms into a disappointing example of a narrative that apparently did not match his actions. If guilty, a clear and extreme violation of trust. May this particular sequence of events serve as a reminder that success, especially when against the odds, is a gift and certainly never a reason to abandon a moral compass and then use that success to exploit others.
