Today, we're excited to get to know Bobby Guelich, Co-Founder and CEO at Elion, the Glassdoor for Healthcare Tech. Founded in 2022, Elion has raised $3.3 million in seed funding from NEA, Max Ventures, 8VC, AlleyCorp, Charge Ventures and Floating Point. Bobby has spent decades making build versus buy decisions at various companies and now is dedicated to the problem of improving that experience in healthcare. Bobby began his career in investment research at Bridgewater Associates and later worked as a VP of Customer Care Strategy and Head of Sales at Oscar Insurance. After that, he spent three years at Formation Bio (formerly TrialSpark), a technology company that specializes in clinical trial management, eventually transitioning into an Advisory Role. In May 2022, he founded Elion.  Bobby earned an AB in Economics and Finance from Princeton and briefly attended Stanford Graduate School of Business before he pursued an opportunity at Oscar Insurance. Getting Into The Stock Market: Financial Wellness Principles for New Investors. Self-taught investor Tony Elion Jr. shares how he made more than $250,000 in the stock market by focusing on fundamental principles of financial wellness.

Overcoats And Friends Benefit on Tiltify (Live Stream) on May 21Benefit for Association to Benefit Children7PM EDT via Amazon-music's Twitch channel The indie-pop duo Overcoats is curating and performing in a live music festival on Thursday evening, May 21, which they’re calling “The Fight For NYC.” The NY-based band consists Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell, and they – like almost all musicians – have been struggling with the idea of not being able to do the single, most basic thing that musicians do: play music for people.  “We were devastated to not be able to play our Music Hall of Williamsburg show,” says Elion; “our big hometown album show which was meant to happen just a couple of weeks ago. So we wanted to do something for NY where we could donate money to an organization that’s doing good work in the city right now – and get our artist community back together.”  The Thursday night lineup includes such notable figures on the Brooklyn indie scene as Torres, Margaret Glaspy, and Porches – all of whom have recent albums and would normally be touring around to support them now. The organization they’ve chosen to partner with is the Association To Benefit Children, which provides in-person support to families at risk of child abuse and domestic violence, and which also provides childcare to front-line workers in the fight against COVID19.  “It was a NY-centric idea from the beginning,” Mitchell explains. She points to the nightly tradition of clapping at 7pm for health care and other front-line workers as a source of inspiration: “we wanted to dedicate more than just two minutes of clapping to organizations working on the front line. And so it was always the plan for us to really focused and rallying around a New York City cause, and the ABC does really important work.” She adds that they felt the lineup of musicians had to be NYC-based as well. “We have a lot of musicians who are friends and we’ve toured with who are not based in New York, and it would’ve been amazing to have them, but we wanted the whole lineup to be performing as a love letter to New York.”  Overcoats’ new album is called The Fight, and although it was recorded before the pandemic, its theme of resistance and perseverance has taken on new levels of meaning. Hana Elion points to the song called “Fire and Fury”: “it has a line that says ‘the world as I know it is coming to an end’.” As JJ Mitchell observes, “there are a few songs that are ‘we’ll get through it’-type ballads. One is ‘Fire and Fury’ and another is ‘I'll Be There.’ And those have taken on a much more powerful and different meaning for us. It’s sad that we can’t tour now because so much of the joy of putting out a record is the experience of singing it for people in a room and feeling how the words are helping people. But songs are always taking on new meanings as the world around us changes.” The Fight also represents a new sound for Overcoats.  Their well-received debut LP featured glowing, almost folk-style vocal harmonies set in a wash of electronic pop. This new LP hits harder, with more of a rock sound. In the intervening two-plus years, the duo graduated from college, started living on their own, lost family and friends to what Elion refers to as “mental health complications and gun violence,” and came to the realization that, as she says, “life doesn’t get any easier when you grow up, and you don’t really understand much more; you just have to fight harder.” And so the live streaming festival is called The Fight For NYC. Elion, who is actually quarantining in Maryland, says “it’s been heartbreaking to see the struggles it’s gone through – uniquely, because it is New York and because there are so many people there and the rent costs and all the things that makes it an amazing place and also a difficult place. So we really wanted to do something that was centered around our hometown.”   As JJ Mitchell points out, most people know that musicians have been financially impacted by the loss of touring income; what they may not know is that musicians are feeling an emotional loss as well.  “It is a really crucial part of the album cycle,” she explains. “You hole up for two years, and then so much of our emotional rebuilding after having birthed this ‘album/child’ is from connecting with fans. And that’s gone now.” Mitchell admits to feeling nervous about Overcoats’ upcoming online appearance, but Elion is looking forward to the duo curating the whole event.  “I hope people come and watch and donate,” she says, “but what I’m most excited about is just to talk to the other artists and really feel a part of a community. Because that’s the part that we really need.”

Millions of lives are saved each year with the vaccines developed by these two Nobel Prize recipients.  Their discoveries were some of the  greatest medical achievements of the 20th century.    Gertrude Elion was a biochemist, who unraveled the mysteries and mechanisms of leukemia, herpes, gout, malaria & meningitis in order to create effective medications. She transformed kidney transplantation, by creating the first immune suppressant to prevent rejection by organ recipients.   And her work led to the first successful HIV/AIDS drug.  Baruch Blumberg was a physician who traveled the world studying the interplay of genetics and environment on disease response, and along way discovered the virus that was causing Hepatitis B - a leading cause of fatal kidney disease and cancer.  He then created a vaccine for it, and is believed to have prevented more cancer deaths than any other human being.

Tony Elion made $300,000 in 13 months by investing in the stock market. He has a unique story that highlights the benefits of being in the military, formal education, self education, and taking smart risks. Tony went to college and graduated, but he didn’t really know what he wanted to do, and he was facing a tough recessionary job market. He learned to speak spanish, play the guitar, and take siestas, in Spain before coming back to the US and joining the Navy.  He had a seven month gap before his deployment and worked in an Amazon fulfillment center. Amazon was giving employees shares of stock, and he received two shares of Amazon stock. This was his first introduction to the stock market. While deployed in Japan he continued to educate himself about finances, stocks, and investing. After leaving the military, he decided to take advantage of the GI bill and get his advanced degree and then attend law school.  He also used scholarship money to invest. His investments started paying off, but Tony wants to emphasize that it was education and discipline that led to his success. He has also written a new book called Sailor to Student: How I Made a Quarter of a Million Dollars in the Stock Market, and You Can Too. In this episode, Tony gives us a first hand account of his amazing story along with sound tips and advice for investing, finances, and life.    Highlights from This Episode [00:47] Tony is from Memphis, Tennessee. After college, he wasn't sure what he wanted to do. [01:13] He taught English in Spain for a while. [02:25] Two weeks after returning from Spain, he signed up for the US Navy. [03:58] He was an assistant for the chaplain and worked with people all day. [04:47] He was in Japan for four years. He used his GI bill to get his master's degree. He then decided to go to law school. [08:01] Penn State gave him a $33,000 a year scholarship. [09:50] The GI bill is a versatile tool to change your future or your family's future. [10:48] Tony recently wrote a book called Sailor to Student: How I Made a Quarter of a Million Dollars in the Stock Market, and You Can Too. [11:24] Tony used his scholarship money and invested in the stock market. In 13 months, he was able to grow his portfolio to over $300,000. [11:43] He would post his investments on social media and people started asking him questions. [12:37] He decided to answer everything in one place in the new book. [15:07] His first introduction to stocks was when he worked at the Amazon fulfillment center, and they gave everybody two shares of stock. [16:25] When he came back from service, he now had 19 shares of Amazon stock and it was worth $18,000. [17:02] His first investment was putting $20,000 into Amazon stock. [17:27] He would look at companies that he knew. His next choice was Netflix. [18:26] The most money he ever made was with a cannabis investment in Canada. He sold all of his stocks and bought this stock. He held it for 8 days and made $175,000. [20:59] Tony is a big fan of discipline and delayed gratification. Create plan, a budget, and stick with it, and you can really grow your finances. [23:29] He founded Love Now Incorporated in 2017. [23:55] Tony's been successful, and he wanted to give back. [24:53] His organization is about taking people where they are and giving them the help they need. [25:11] Last year they had a coat giveaway event for International students who didn't have them.  [26:49] Tony left the military in 2016. [28:23] Tony would go to the library on base and learn all about finance. His success was more about discipline than luck.  [30:01] It's better to sit down and learn everything on your own.  [31:28] Passive investment is almost mandatory as society progresses. People need to take advantage of investing to benefit from compound interest.  [33:55] The military is now creating programs to protect people who enlist after they leave.  [35:44] Look at your money. Make a budget and track what you. Stick with your budget and save. Life insurance is an investment, have your foundation in place. Get an emergency fund. Then invest.  [39:20] When stocks start to fall is the time to buy. Julie Elion has been my mentor for the past 10 years. Along the way she has provided me insight, advice, and she always seems to know when to ask the right question. I owe much of my career to Julie. Julie has developed one of the premier sport psychology practices in the professional golf world. She is currently working with multiple players on the PGA Tour, including winners of multiple major tournaments and regular tour events totaling over 60 wins and five majors. She worked with the 2008 U.S. Ryder Cup team in their victory at Valhalla Golf Club, as well as with four members of the 2010 U.S. Ryder Cup and four members of the 2011 U.S. Presidents Cup teams. She has a broad focus on competitive golf and counsels golfers at multiple levels of competition including the Nationwide and Champions tour for men, the LPGA and LET for women, and Division I Collegiate Golf. As well as working extensively with golfers, Julie also provides mental coaching for athletes and teams of other sports on both the professional and collegiate level, including the Washington Wizards (NBA), the Washington Redskins (NFL), the Washington Mystics (WNBA), and the University of Maryland Men’s Basketball team. Julie founded the Center for Athletic Performance Enhancement in 1998. Her philosophy is based upon helping an individual gain insight into their sport, character, family, and relationships and then use these insights to become a resilient athlete and a more fulfilled person. Julie integrates classical sport psychology tools (e.g., pre-shot routines, course management, and visualization) that are focused on behavioral and cognitive cues, with a deeper appreciation and understanding of oneself. Julie helps to prepare her players for success by focusing on believing in themselves first as a person, and second as an athlete. In this episode we discuss her surprising path to the field of Sport Psychology, her work with world-class golfers, setting process expectations, the difference between working with individual sports versus team sports, and much more. "I have been having some pretty hard luck..." In his twentieth letter home from Camp Lee, Virginia, to his sister Minnie Riggle, US Army Wagoner (mule team driver) Lester Scott, a World War I soldier from Wheeling, West Virginia, writes that he is "taking the mumps" and his "jaw is swelled some." He fears a long hospital stay (18 days for mumps) will ruin yet another attempt to visit home. Even the ever-optimistic Les has to admit he's been the victim of some "hard luck," but he still sees the silver lining in that if he has mumps now, he won't have them "sometime again." He says the mule drivers will be getting their trucks soon [American manufacturers had produced more than 225,000 trucks by 1918]. Elsewhere on the same day the Germans captured trenches on the Belgian coast, Brits and Germans fought a submarine battle near the Canary Islands, rioting occurred in Moscow even as the Congress of Soviets met in Petrograd, and future Nobel Laureate, American biochemist Gertrude B. Elion was born.   Lester Scott was drafted in 1917 and trained at Camp Lee, where so many Wheeling soldiers were trained. And, like so many of his Ohio Valley comrades, he served in the 314th Field Artillery Supply Company, Battery “A,” 80th (Blue Ridge) Division in France. This is his twentieth letter from Camp Lee, dated 100 years ago today, January 23, 1918.
