Ella Jenkins, the celebrated musician who brought children's songs like “I've Been Working on the Railroad” to life, passed away at 100 on Nov. 9. Her death was confirmed by Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, where she was a pioneering artist. Born in St. Louis in 1924 and raised on Chicago's South Side, Jenkins grew up surrounded by gospel, blues, and the lively music of the Regal Theater. Influenced by Cab Calloway, she developed a call-and-response style to engage children in learning through song. After graduating from San Francisco State University, Jenkins used music as a teaching tool in Chicago community centers, releasing her debut album Call-And-Response: Rhythmic Group Singing in 1957. Her legacy endures in songs like “You'll Sing a Song and I'll Sing a Song,” preserved in the Library of Congress. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this week's episode, Tim and Jeremy welcome writer and academic Gayle Wald to the show to tell us about the life and times of Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Christened on social media ‘the queer black woman who invented rock'n'roll', yet derided in 1970 as ‘a blacked up Elvis in drag', Sister Rosetta's story disrupts the received narrative of rock history. We hear about her religious upbringing, hitting the road with her evangelist mother; playing in the Cotton Club, the Decca Records studios, and from the centre field of a football stadium (in her wedding dress!); and being feted by Johnny Cash at the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame. Sister Rosetta's story concerns misogyny, Pentecostalism, the evolution of the electric guitar, gossip, Little Richard and more, and Gayle is the perfect person to share it with us. This is an edited version of the full interview. To hear more about Sister Rosetta as well as about Gayle's book on the television programme ‘Soul!' - a groundbreaking piece of public broadcasting that brought black thinkers, activists and musicians to the TV screen - and her forthcoming work on the eminent children's musician Ella Jenkins, become a patron. Welcome Back to Blue Moon Vibes! The podcast that makes you laugh a lil' bit, cry a lil' bit, and think a lil' bit! My goal is to be the one that gives you more than you asked! I hope you can find value in these topics, and they become something that you talk amongst your friends and family about! Don't shy away from challenging issues because that is where growth happens! The change you want to see is the change you must create! We are worthy, we are tenacious, we are strong, and we are purposeful! The only way to erase the divide is to come together as a nation and treat each other as people, with respect and courtesy!  It's Series 6 Episode 6 .   Ms. Ella Jenkins said it best, Wade in the water, Wade in the water, children Wade in the water God's gonna trouble the water. See those people dressed in white They look like the children of the Israelites, Wade in the water Wade in the water, children Wade in the water, God's gonna trouble the water. Just like most negro spirituals, this one, too, had a message. Also, just like most, its message has been interpreted in different ways throughout history. My interpretation is that the lyrics were used to let the escaping slaves know which way to go—letting them know that the water is safer than the roads. As we take you all through today's episode, let us know in the comments what you believe Juneteenth signifies, and if you think that making it a national holiday was the first step, or were there steps missed in the process? You will hear my thoughts on the topic, and I will share a story about an uninformed colleague, for which, as I have stated in previous episodes, it is our job to inform those that wish to know about our history. I will also share some of my unconscious biases and how I jumped to the defensive without thinking. You all know that we choose to provide you with entertainment that leaves a way for your interpretation because we believe that is the best conversation piece—not telling you how to think or what to say, just giving you something to talk about. This Train (is Bound for Glory) - Chords, Lyrics and OriginsOur version of this Classic African-American Spiritual features a New Orleans Style Piano, Ukelele, Muddy Waters style Delta Blues Dobro, Guitars, Drums, Swing Acoustic Bass, and FiddleOriginsFirst recorded in 1922 by the Florida Normal Industrial Institute Quartet, This Train (or 'This Train is Bound for Glory' or 'Dis Train' as it is sometimes known) is an African-American spiritual. The oddly-named Florida Normal Industrial Institute Quartet were an early African-American barber-shop act who sang the song a cappella. This Train was later made famous by Sister Rosetta Tharpe, who recorded it twice: initially, using an acoustic guitar, in the 1930s, and then again, using an electric guitar, in the 1950s. Her 1950s version is now seen as a precursor of Rock-n-Roll. It was also famously recorded as 'This Train is Bound for Glory' by Woody Guthrie. Guthrie's autobiographical novel, 'Bound for Glory' takes its title from the song.GThis train is bound for glory, this train.G DThis train is bound for glory, this train.GThis train is bound for glory,CNon gonna ride it but the righteous and the holy.G D GThis train is bound for glory, this train. This train don't carry no gamblers, this train; This train don't carry no gamblers, this train; This train don't carry no gamblers,No High Flyers, no midnight ramblers,This train is bound for glory, this train. This train don't carry no liars, this train; This train don't carry no liars, this train; This train don't carry no liars,No Hypocrites, compromiseers, and Truth DeniersThis train don't carry no liars, this train.© 2015 Shiloh Worship Music COPY FREELY;This Music is copyrighted to prevent misuse, however, permission is granted for non-commercial copying-Radio play permitted- www.shilohworshipmusic.comFrom Wikipedia:Early history:The earliest known example of "This Train" is a recording by Florida Normal and Industrial Institute Quartette from 1922, under the title "Dis Train."[3] Another one of the earliest recordings of the song is the version made by Wood's Blind Jubilee Singers in August 1925 under the title "This Train Is Bound for Glory". The next year the song found its way into print for the first time in the Lomaxes' American Folk Songs and Ballads anthology and was subsequently included in Alan Lomax's 1960 anthology, Folk Songs of North America.[2]In 1935, the first hillbilly recording of the song was released by Tennessee Ramblers as "Dis Train" in reference to the song's black roots.[2] Then in the late 1930s, after becoming the first black artist to sign with a major label, gospel singer and guitarist Sister Rosetta Tharpe recorded "This Train" as a hit for Decca. Her later version of the song, released by Decca in the early 1950s, featured Tharpe on electric guitar and is cited as one of several examples of her work that led to the emergence of rock 'n roll.Other recordingsOver the years, "This Train" has been covered by artists specializing in numerous genres, including blues, folk, bluegrass, gospel, rock, post-punk, jazz, reggae, and zydeco. Among the solo artists and groups who have recorded it are Louis Armstrong, Big Bill Broonzy, Brothers Four, Hylo Brown, Alice Coltrane, Delmore Brothers, Sandy Denny, D.O.A., Lonnie Donegan, Jimmy Durante, Snooks Eaglin, Bob Gibson, Joe Glazer, John Hammond, Jr., Cisco Houston, Janis Ian, Mahalia Jackson, Ella Jenkins, Sleepy LaBeef, The Limeliters, Trini Lopez, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Ziggy Marley, Ricky Nelson, Peter, Paul & Mary, Utah Phillips, Pete Seeger, The Seekers, Roberta Sherwood, Hank Snow, David Soul, Staples Singers, Billy Strange, the Tarriers, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Hank Thompson, Sublime, Randy Travis, The Verlaines, Bunny Wailer, Nina Hagen, Girls at Our Best!, Buckwheat Zydeco and Jools Holland.[2][4]”Come and check out our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/ShilohWorshipGroup/videos  Free Christian Worship Music on the iTunes StorePlease check out our free Christian Worship Music on the iTunes Store.
