Sehr beeindruckend!
We got a request this week (https://forums.adafruit.com/viewtopic.php?t=214223) for a 'shorter replacement encoder' for the MacroPad (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/5128/14635377). Traditionally, we use the PEC11 in a 15mm long flattened shaft, with detents and switch (https://www.digikey.com/short/8pjcn4nh), but they want something less! Let's look on DigiKey to see if shorter encoders are available, trying to keep the same footprint and mechanical features such as a switch, ~20 pulses per rotation, and detents. The CANopen redundant rotary encoder features magnetic and photoelectric sampling systems with up to 30-bit multiturn resolution in one housing. Each system has its own microcontroller, compiler, and software module so they can operate independently, each with its own node ID in the CANopen system. This dual technology is known as diverse redundancy; it eliminates the possibility of common mode failure. There is no rechargeable battery; both systems can measure absolute position in de-energized mode. This CANopen redundant encoder is essentially two encoders in one housing, which are connected to the safety PLC via a single cable, making it easy to install and integrate into a safety system. The rotary encoder can be used with all accessories for 58 mm encoders—including mounting aids, couplings, measuring wheels, torque rests, as well as cable pulls and guide pulleys. The aluminum housing, the solid or recessed hollow shaft made of stainless steel, the degree of protection up to IP67, the temperature range from -40 °C to +85 °C, and the axial and radial shaft load of 40 N and 110 N respectively enable use under harsh conditions. count em: one, two, three...four rotary encoders encrust this new Stemma QT board! with a lil attiny817 running the adafruit seesaw code, we can now read 4 encoders and 4 switches plus control 4 matching neopixels all over I2C. great for when you do not want to spend all your microcontroller cycles counting out all your interrupted pins plus also clocking out neopixels. we don't have a ton of room on this 'standard sized' 4 inch by 1 inch PCB, so we stuck the pixels underneath. now on low cost encoders you can't really see the lighting, but on fancy 'clear body' encoders you can get a cool glowing effect! there's even clear or translucent knobs one can get that will diffuse the color nicely. In this work, we present a conceptually sim-ple and effective method to train a strong bilingual/multilingual multimodal representation model. Starting from the pre-trained multimodal representation model CLIP released by OpenAI, we altered its text encoder with a pre-trained multilingual text encoder XLMR, and aligned both languages and image representations by a two-stage training schema consisting of teacher learning and contrastive learning. We validate our method through evaluations of a wide range of tasks. We set new state-of-the-art performances on a bunch of tasks including ImageNet-CN, Flicker30k-CN, COCO-CN and XTD. Further, we obtain very close performances with CLIP on almost all tasks, suggesting that one can simply alter the text encoder in CLIP for extended capabilities such as multilingual understanding. 2022: Zhongzhi Chen, Guangyi Liu, Bo Zhang, Fulong Ye, Qinghong Yang, Ledell Yu Wu Ranked #1 on Zero-Shot Transfer Image Classification on CN-ImageNet-Sketch https://arxiv.org/pdf/2211.06679v2.pdf
Jiuxun Yin, Caltech Seismological Laboratory Seismograms contain multiple sources of seismic waves, from distinct transient signals such as earthquakes to continuous ambient seismic vibrations such as microseism. Ambient vibrations contaminate the earthquake signals, while the earthquake signals pollute the ambient noise's statistical properties necessary for ambient-noise seismology analysis. Separating ambient noise from earthquake signals would thus benefit multiple seismological analyses. This work develops a multi-task encoder-decoder network named WaveDecompNet to separate transient signals from ambient signals directly in the time domain for 3-component seismograms. We choose the active-volcanic Big Island in Hawai'i as a natural laboratory given its richness in transients (tectonic and volcanic earthquakes) and diffuse ambient noise (strong microseism). The approach takes a noisy 3-component seismogram as input and independently predicts the 3-component earthquake and noise waveforms. The model is trained on earthquake and noise waveforms from the STandford EArthquake Dataset (STEAD) and on the local noise of seismic station IU.POHA. We estimate the network's performance by using the Explained Variance (EV) metric on both earthquake and noise waveforms. We explore different neural network designs for WaveDecompNet and find that the model with Long-Short-Term-Memory (LSTM) performs best over other structures. Overall, we find that WaveDecompNet provides satisfactory performance down to a Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (SNR) of 0.1. The potential of the method is 1) to improve broadband SNR of transient (earthquake) waveforms and 2) to improve local ambient noise to monitor the Earth's structure using ambient noise signals. To test this, we apply a Short-Time-Average to a Long-Time-Average (STA/LTA) filter and improve the number of detected events. We also measure single-station cross-correlation functions of the recovered ambient noise and establish their improved coherence through time and over different frequency bands. We conclude that WaveDecompNet is a promising tool for a broad range of seismological research.

The ENI90 series hollow shaft rotary encoders with BlueBeam technology are characterized by high signal quality and maximum precision in rotational speed measurement. Due to the blue light of the BlueBeam technology, the ENI90 series incremental rotary encoders reliably achieve the highest measurement accuracy, even under the toughest conditions. Three device types and a comprehensive range of accessories offer almost unlimited configuration options for a wide variety of applications. They prove their worth wherever high-precision speed control is required, e.g. in crane systems, steel mills, and wind turbine applications. The ENI90IL basic version is the economical solution for all standard applications. The ENI90PL rotary encoder is designed for demanding environments and offers highest shock and vibration resistance. Its insulated shaft is suitable for high dielectric peaks. The EMC protection provides electrical surge immunity for the rotary encoder. For extreme conditions, the ENI90HD heavy-duty version is available. The devices in this series offer even higher dielectric strength for powerful EMC protection and can withstand maximum shaft loads. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this paper, we provide an in-depth analysis of how to tackle high cardinality categorical features with the quantile. Our proposal outperforms state-of-the-art encoders, including the traditional statistical mean target encoder, when considering the Mean Absolute Error, especially in the presence of long tailed or skewed distributions. 2021: Carlos Mougán, D. This week's EYE ON NPI is a gaze into the duality of man! Wait, no, it's a gaze into the dual-concentricity of this fascinating new rotary encoder: the Bourns PEC11D Series Dual-Centric Rotary Encoder with Momentary Push Switch (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/b/bourns/pec11d-series-dual-centric-rotary-encoder-with-momentary-push-switch). We have covered rotary encoders and switches on EYE ON NPI before (https://blog.adafruit.com/?s=eye+on+npi+rotary) so you may be familiar with them. Rotary encoders are a popular user interface element that engineers use to add a tactile increment/decrement control. We find they're much more intuitive to use than touch screens, especially when you want to increase or decrease a value precisely: it's a lot easier to twist the knob by one detent than it is to press a touch screen once. Rotary encoders can also be used hands-free or when observing some output because the tactile feedback is strong. The most common rotary encoders used for user input are mechanical style, usually with detents. They can be ring-style like the famous iPod Clickwheel or knob style. These are two mechanical rotary encoders in that there is a little leaf spring connected to the knob and the “common” pin, and the body has a metal-cutout piece, that when rotated connects and disconnects the two side pins from the common. The two pins pulse high and low to indicate motion and direction. Usually two interrupt pins are connected to the rotary encoder to catch the pulses and track the counter increment or decrement. Say you have some product you're designing and you want to have two encoders in one, say because you want 'rough' and 'fine' adjustment. You could use one encoder and have the button state determine what mode the encoder is in. (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_Learning_System_Guides/blob/main/Rotary_Trinkey/CircuitPython_ColorPicker_Example/code.py) However, there may be a situation where you want to use that button for entering the new setting. Or if you have a very space-constrained interface, and you can't fit two side-by-side. That's where the Bourns PEC11D (https://www.digikey.com/short/013h5701) will come to the rescue! This encoder has two (count 'em two) rotary encoders in one package. By turning the outer or inner part separately you can control two electrically separated rotary encoders, and there's also a push-button input. You'll need to mould or machine a special knob to allow selection of either half, but most folks end up with custom knobs rather than off-the-shelf for a final product anyways. We wired this cute li'l guy to an Arduino and ran a rotary encoder demo that was expecting two encoders and it worked like a breeze - just the way you expect! This unique user interface element definitely solves an existing problem and Bourns is famous for their high quality encoders, so you know it will last and work well in your product design. The Bourns PEC11D (https://www.digikey.com/short/013h5701) is in stock now for immediate shipment from Digi-Key. Order today and you'll be concentrically rotating by tomorrow afternoon!
This week's EYE ON NPI is gonna spin you right round, baby, right round like a record player - it's C&K's ENC Series Optical Rotary Encoder Switches (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/c/ck-components/enc-series-encoder-switches) a high-reliability encoder with strong detents, that's great for medical and industrial equipment, automotive, and more, where longevity and reliability is important. Rotary encoders (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/encoders/507) are a popular user interface element that engineers use to add a tactile increment/decrement control. We find they're much more intuitive to use than touch screens, especially when you want to increase or decrease a value precisely: its a lot easier to twist the knob by one detent than it is to press a touch screen once. Rotary encoders can also be used hands-free or when observing some output because the tactile feedback is strong. (https://www.digikey.com/en/articles/a-designers-guide-to-encoders) The most common rotary encoders used for user input are mechanical style, usually with detents. They can be ring-style like the famous iPod Clickwheel (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204217) or knob style. These are two mechanical rotary encoders in that there is a little leaf spring connected to the knob and the "common" pin, and the body has a metal-cutout piece, that when rotated connects and disconnects the two side pins from the common. The two pins pulse high and low to indicate motion and direction. Usually two interrupt pins are connected to the rotary encoder to catch the pulses and track the counter increment or decrement. Super fun and easy right? Except....that little leaf spring contact ends up rubbing against the gray code wheel and even good quality springs have a contact life of maybe 500,000 contacts. that's only 10,000 full turns - each turn is 2 x 24 contacts. if you're turning the knob 10 times a day the encoder will fail after 1000 days, about three years. And rotary encoders do fail, a lot! Heck, even our favorite scope we got right out of school has a broken encoder on the channel 1 zoom select (not surprising, since channel one is the most used and its turned constantly to zoom into the signal). A bad encoder may not be user-serviceable at all, and requires some care to desolder and replace - unless it's on a detachable cable or module, it can be a very serious repair. Flaky encoders are also a little dangerous - they can increment instead of decrement, which can be confusing and cause incorrect settings. If you're designing a medical device or a car where there's a knob that will be used daily, having it fail after 3 to 5 years is not going to be an option - especially since the failure can happen instantly. Not a good look when a $2000 product is taken down by a $2 encoder failure. Enter the optical encoder! Optical encoders solve the contact rating issue by replacing the leaf spring with two LEDs and an optical sensor. Instead of mechanically contacting the two grey code bits, the optical sensor provides the pulses without the risk of wear and tear. These cost a few dollars more than your everyday mechanical encoder but give you rock solid reliability. These C&K ENC optical encoders (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/c/ck-components/enc-series-encoder-switches) look and feel just like mechanical encoders. With 24 detents, they're a drop-in replacement. You can panel mount, and there's even a quick-replace connector with JST SH 6-pin socket (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/jst-sales-america-inc/A06SR06SR30K51A/6009375), for easy replacement in the field. The C+K ENC Series Optical Rotary Encoder Switches (https://www.digikey.com/short/pw8p3tf8) are in stock right now for immediate shipment from Digi-Key! Order today and you'll be reliably twistin' and turnin' by tomorrow afternoon - don't forget to pick up some JST SH cables as well (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/jst-sales-america-inc/A06SR06SR30K51A/6009375)!
