Send us a textHello, passionate cruisers! This is Paul and this week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast I am delighted to welcome back a special guest, my cohost Cheryl. We are largely in the bucket list checking stage of our lives, and just got the opportunity to check one off—a cruise on a luxury cruise line, specifically Explora Journeys and its first ship, Explora I. Let me preface with a brief overview oo the main categories of cruise lines:Mainstream-Carnival, Royal Caribbean, NCLPremium-Celebrity, Holland America, Princess, Virgin Voyages, DisneyLuxury-Regent Seven Seas, Seaborne, Crystal, Windstar You can argue with those classifications but that is accepted in the cruising industry. Where you are more likely to get arguments is about these cruise lines on the edge between categories. When we decided on explora journeys it was not on our luxury cruise radar—the luxury lines just mentioned were. This aspiration to cruise in luxury was decidedly low on the list simply due to affordability; we have so many more affordable bucket list items; like going to the Panama Canal this fall. Then Explora Journeys surprisingly dominated the luxury category of the Cruise Critics Awards just a short time before I hosted Colleen Mc Daniel who happens to be the Editor-in-Chief of Cruise Critic. Not only did Colleen pique my interest by sharing her own experience on Explora Journeys but she turned me on to some Explora promotions—still going on—that had me researching as soon as the call ended with Colleen. That research confirmed Colleen's mention of attractive pricing, and it led me to several podcast guests who could talk about Explora Journeys including Kathy Lu, an executive with Explora Journeys, before we boarded in March. Send us a textHello, passionate cruisers! This is Paul and this week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am delighted to welcome Emma & Jack, creators of the YouTube channel, Live A Little. As frequent listeners know, I enjoy watching cruise YouTube videos and from time to time I get introduced to The Joy of Cruising Podcast guests. That's kind of how I met Emma & Jack. I say kind of because normally I just watch videos and then perhaps transfixed by someones video style, or sense of humor, comprehensiveness of their video. In Live A Little case it was a little different. I was recording an episode with Colleen McDaniel, Editor-in-Chief of Cruise Critic and we got to talking about Explora Journeys, a newcomer in the luxury sector and a big winner in the recent Cruise Critic Awards. By the end of the interview, Colleen had influence me to move a luxury cruise to the top of my bucket list. I searched Explora Journeys and proceed to binge on dozens of YouTube videos and in the process happened upon Live A Little. After binging on Explora Journeys, I binged on Live A Little videos and they have a wonderful cruising life and a fun, informative video style and I am glad they agreed to come on The Joy of Cruising Podcast. The Lindsays are a family of 3 based out of Colorado and created Live A Little during Covid after being able to find many YouTube channels that traveled the way they did. So, they gave it a go on a cruise to Alaska and the rest is history—they caught my eye! Their focus is a lot of content around suite level cruises, but their larger goal is to highlight destinations and the overall experience. Lindsay & Jack note, “We have a passion for exploring this world one adventure at a time. Whether it's cruising the high seas, discovering gems on a road trip, or exploring iconic destinations, our goal is simple: to inspire you to get out and 'live a little' and make the most out of every journey. We don't want to look back on our life and wish we had done something. So we live by the motto just get out and live a little and see this amazing world while you can. Explora Journeys might sound like an overland adventure company, but in fact it is an upmarket cruise line. The president of the organisation, Anna Nash, told me how it differs from mass-market cruise firms, and says she welcomes competition from land-based companies such as Ritz-Carlton dipping a toe into the water and offering voyages. This podcast is free, as is Independent Travel's weekly newsletter. Jeannette is joined by Anna Nash, the president of Explora Journeys, who shares her insights on the luxury travel industry and her journey in leadership. Anna discusses her definition of luxury, emphasising the importance of time and personalised service, and reflects on her transition from a corporate environment to a family-owned business. She highlights the unique offerings of Explora Journeys, including its focus on exceptional dining experiences and spacious accommodations, the challenges of recruiting talent in the luxury segment, the significance of team culture, and the importance of communication in leadership. KEY TAKEAWAYS Luxury is defined as having time and receiving exceptional, personalised service that anticipates every need. It is viewed as an overused term, but for the speaker, it centres around the experience of time and service. Working in a family-owned business like Explora Journeys allows for a more entrepreneurial environment, enabling quicker decision-making and a strong connection to family values, which fosters a passionate and authentic desire to succeed. Finding the right talent in the luxury segment is crucial, with a focus on soft skills such as a can-do attitude and a guest-centric approach. The importance of listening to customer feedback is vital, with a commitment to responding to every guest's communication. This approach not only helps in recovering from any issues but also strengthens customer loyalty. BEST MOMENTS "For me, luxury is time. I think having time to switch off, having time to really be pampered, having time to explore locations at great depth, but also great service, very personal service." "I'm looking for somebody that I know will click with the environment in which we operate, has a passion to succeed, and is all about the attention to detail and a guest-centric approach." "I think there's a bit of a re-marketing job, almost a rebranding of the sector to attract people back that may have left for alternative options." "It's about having the right team behind you. I'm always a champion of my team and making sure you have the tools and the motivation in order to succeed." This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. It’s never too late to be BRAVE and BOLD and unlock your inner BRILLIANT. Send us a textThis week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am delighted to welcome Kathy Lu of Explora Journeys. Let me preface my conversation with Kathy by pointing out that Explora Journeys was not even on my radar a few months ago. Then a series of events converged in a short amount of time. In November the Cruise Critic Awards came out and Explora Journeys was announced as respectively Best Cruise Line, Best Dining, and Best for Families in the luxury category. Mind you at the time of that announcement, a luxury cruise was on my bucket list—perhaps Regent Seven Seas, Crystal, Seabourne—Explora Journeys was not even in my thinking. Then I hosted Colleen McDaniel, Editor-in-Chief, Cruise Critic and asked her to reflect on cruising luxury cruise lines. Part of her response related to Explora Journeys, and I recall responding, “Wow, I have got some research to do.” That research led me to Kathy Lu.Kathy Lu is Explora Journeys' Business Relationship Lead, USA Southeast. Having spent 14 years at Crystal Cruises—first in Los Angeles, later in Miami—Kathy flourished in the brand's culture of excellence, in which respect for others was paramount and exceeding expectations was inherent within the team. From her beginnings as an administrative assistant, through promotions into a myriad of roles in strategic partnerships, international sales and marketing, and ultimately as Regional Sales Manager for the Southeast, Kathy has formed unique global perspectives and valuable insights into all facets of luxury tourism today. A playful and curious lover of travel who began cruising from a young age, Kathy has spent much of her life exploring the world. Her favorite destinations include Greece, Hungary, and Vietnam and her future-travels wish list includes iconic spots like South Africa, New Zealand, and especially Iceland; a broken ankle, occurring hours after stepping onto the land of fire and ice, cut her holiday short in 2021. Whether at home in Atlanta, in a fine restaurant, at a taco truck, or aboard a luxury ship, Kathy enjoys the foodie life and relishes opportunities to entertain. She loves contemporary art and Scotch whisky that is old enough to order its own drink. She's a friend to all canines, and she loves people, particularly her supportive family in Los Angeles. Kathy holds a bachelor's degree Relying on ship wifi is slow, unsecure, sometimes not available & at foreign ports travelers don't want to pay their carriers' high fees. Save $ with GigSky! Send us a Text Message.Hello, passionate cruisers! I am delighted to welcome this week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, John Perri, creator of the John the Wanderer blog, Facebook Page and Instagram. John is a consummate cruise aficionado. He notes “There is something about being on the ocean that is such an awesome experience. Plus having all the food and entertainment included and in one place makes for an awesome vacation. You can't go wrong with going on a cruise.” Since childhood, he has loved anything to do with travel, and would get cruise brochures and plan trips for his family. To his parent's amazement he would research destinations and pick the right room on the ship as well as what to do while the family visited the ports. Fast forward to today, John works as a travel advisor and still loves planning trips and hopping on an ship and being whisked off to a tropical destination. I teasingly use the analogy of Superman when discussing John. Most of the time he is a mild-mannered travel agent where he can help his clients plan an amazing cruise or land vacation and experience all the fun that he does when he travels, but at other times he becomes John the Wanderer, the super cruiser. For instance, when I first reached out to John we couldn't schedule a conversation because he was headed to the inaugural cruise for the new Margaritaville at Sea Islander, noting almost apologetically, “I'm not a parrot head or anything, I normally do more luxury cruises like Celebrity, Explora Journeys.” I told him that's ok—I want to talk about those other lines too. But he would be the 1st to give listeners a report on the Islander. Shortly after Islander, John was also going on Celebrity Beyond a week later for the President's Cruise, so I definitely wanted to wait so we could have our conversation until after he returned. Then I found out he was about to sail the new Royal Caribbean Utopia of the Seas, the world's second largest ship. So we deferred our conversation again because I had to hear about that. No wonder he is known as John the Wanderer.Limited time offer John mentioned in the podcast: Celebrity Cruises: $150 Onboard Credit for any 6 night or longer Balcony or higher cabin for any sailing in 2024. We have a great selection of cruise news from Disney, Explora Journeys, Carnival Corporation, Costa, Celebrity, Carnival, Cunard, Uniworld & Seabourn. Plus Chris surprises Baz with a Fact or Fiction? Listener Question/feedback:Andrew asks: “Hi I love your podcast. I was wondering if you could do a short history of the Asian Pacific Cruises company that operated the Minghua out of Australia in the early 80's. I saw an old for the Minghua sailings on YouTube and was interested in it's history as it would be great to see an Asian themed cruise company sail out of Australia again.”YuSaNa added a comment via Buy me a coffee: “I like to listen to your podcasts! Stay tuned to our channel to see the daily vlogs being created. . I loved having the opportunity to meet with Patricia in person! . Explora Journeys has one of the best guest services I have ever seen onboard a cruise ship. They are polite, helpful and always there when you need something. - if it's a drink, a meal, or a helping hand. They are there! I cannot wait to go back and experience this service again. . Explora Journeys is a mid-sized ship with a small ship feel. There is ample room to spread out and to have space of your own. . We had difficulty trying to choose our favourite restaurant. Sakura is near the top of the list - it's Pan-Asian, and many of the items on the menu you may not make at home for yourself, so it's a nice treat to head out to that restaurant! . There are many restaurants onboard. If you want to see all the restaurants and sample menus, check out this page on my website: https://www.plentyofsunshinetravel.com/explora-journeys-restaurants/ There is a restaurant for everyone, including gluten-free and vegan options. . The Emporium has fresh foods made to order. It is called a Marketplace, not a buffet. The pasta is made every day, as is the bread. Delicious! The Med Yacht Club is outstanding. - the appetizers are made to share with the table. When we went with Patrica, we ordered everything on the menu and shared it, which was neat! The dessert ~ the semifreddo... WOW! We would go in just for that! . In Fil Rouge, the specialty item is the soufflé, which changes frequently. Having it rise higher and higher above the dish is a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds! . Every venue has been fantastic. Only one restaurant has a charge (Anthology), which is well worth it! . I love how many pools there are. I have been on ships that are larger and had fewer pools. I loved that there are many pool options. You can get complementary milkshakes, which is nice returning from a hot port day. . You will feel that you are at home or in a hotel, not on a cruise. It is amazing! You will feel at home in the suites, which is why they are called residential suites. With 461 suites - all oceanfront and all have a terrace. There is one for you! They start at 377 square feet and only go up from there. Your host attendant is going to keep your suite spotless! .

For this week's Cruise Chat, Kathleen from Plenty of Sunshine Travel met with Aimee from Explora Journeys. . We chatted about this brand new cruise line, and Aimee gave us a great overview of the restaurants, the food, the staterooms and the itineraries and onboard activities. Chef Frank Garanger is the head of the Culinary on Explora Journeys. Explora will have 10 different bars and lounges. A special treat for you is the name of some of the restaurants! . The all-day dining space will be called The Emporium. It is going to have 18 different stations throughout this space. There will be cooking stations, wine and cheese, carved meats, dessert areas, and so on. Plenty of great options! . There is also going to be a concept restaurant. This will be a more intimate space. The maximum capacity is 60 guests. This restaurant will have visiting chefs. It will be a rotation of different chefs and different menus. It will be on a four-month rotating basis. The next restaurant is a Pan-Asian Restaurant. It will be called Sakura. A steakhouse experience will also be onboard. A Mediterranean Restaurant with delicious fresh flair food. An international restaurant will be on Explora. With flavours from around the world. This will also rotate flavours, so it will not always be the same menu each time you cruise with Explora. A coffee lounge will also be available to you, with little grab-and-go bites throughout the day. If you enjoy eating by the pool, then the Poolside dining with light modern cruising and an ocean backdrop will be your go-to location to enjoy your meal. . A Chef's Kitchen-themed restaurant will feature the Chef's unique creations. The chef will have free reign and create menus that speak to them. . With In-Suite dining can order from any of the menus from all of the onboard restaurant menus. You are not limited to a set small menu. .t is awesome to get a sneak peek of one of two restaurant names. Thank you, Aimee! . One of the great things that jumped out to me is how environmentally friendly Explora Journeys is right from the start. They will ensure that the oceans and areas they visit are not damaged by being there! . Es ist eine besondere Podcast-Episode, nämlich die 300ste. Seit neun Jahren, genauer: seit 14. Her first sailing as restrictions lift will see her depart Tilbury on Sunday June 27 on a six-night Scottish Highlands and Islands cruise.
