Specializing in luxury hotel and spa channels, he is passionate about hospitality and the integration of innovative wellness concepts. Tom has worked across multiple channels, supporting go-to-market strategies for a number of emerging skincare brands. His career began with industry icons like The Body Shop, followed by nearly a decade at Clarins, where he honed his expertise in fast-paced commercial retail. During his time at Clarins, he held senior roles in training and field management, overseeing more than 70 staff members and driving significant business revenue. He then established his own consultancy, collaborating with brands like Aromatherapy Associates across EMEA, Swedish skincare brand Swiss Clinic (launching them in Harvey Nichols), and The Hut Group. Following the pandemic, Tom joined British luxury skincare brand 111SKIN, where he has spent the last five years overseeing their global spa division and export markets across MEA and LATAM. His extensive network within luxury hospitality facilitated 111SKIN's successful entry into major hotel groups worldwide, including Mandarin Oriental, Marriott Luxury, Four Seasons, Rosewood, ACCOR Luxury, Hilton Luxury Brands, and Kempinski. Under his leadership, the brand's spa channel grew exponentially, with high-profile partnerships like the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and other iconic global properties. "It's outrageous to host a galamsey discussion at Kempinski, a five-star hotel! This topic could be tackled anywhere, even with the help of AI. Holding it in such a lavish setting is nothing but a reckless waste of resources and money, especially when real solutions are what's needed. I am beyond disgusted by this shocking misuse of priority."

Joining the show this week is a hospitality professional who creates distinct projects that make emotional connections with guests. Please welcome to the show, Senior Director of Design & Construction Services at Kempinski, Vibha Sawhney.Vibha joins Host Dan Ryan to discuss how she creates luxury projects that meet the needs of owners. Vibha also shares the importance of collaborative empathy, the value of meticulous attention to detail, and explores Kempinski's unique approach to luxury.Takeaways: Hospitality involves providing the highest level of service where the guest is considered supreme. For an architect, design and architecture are tools to craft unforgettable and comfortable memories for guests, emphasizing their supreme importance. To gain hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of materials, immerse yourself in working alongside skilled tradespeople like carpenters and metal workers. Understanding how they work allows you to better utilize a material in planning. The key to success is selecting the right partners who will give proper attention to your projects and act with empathy toward the end-users. It is essential to work collaboratively to achieve the best results and support the owner's vision.A successful property requires exceptional service across all locations and maintaining high standards in essential areas like breakfast and room comfort. Consideration must be given to space constraints, ensuring comfortable environments in smaller spaces. While many brands have a clear and defined aesthetic that should be designed for, your job is ultimately to work with an owner to tie their vision together. Successful collaboration blends both brand design and owner desires. Hotels are ultimately an ecosystem that requires collaboration between various functions and backgrounds to function properly. Collaboration can only happen if empathetic understanding is found between employees. Quote of the Show:“We are really open to understanding what the owner and the owner's team wants to do in a project.” - Vibha SawhneyLinks:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vibha-sawhney/ Website: https://www.kempinski.com/enShout Outs:1:43 - Kristen Conry: https://www.linkedin.com/in/conry/ 1:45 - Hyatt: https://www.hyatt.com/ 13:25 - Samuel Creations20:22 - Marina Residences Dubai: https://www.kempinski.com/en/development/upcoming-openings/kempinski-marina-residences-dubai 20:27 - International Design Associates: https://www.ida-global.com/ 25:24 - Marriott: www.marriott.com 25:25 - Hilton: https://www.hilton.com/ 30:13 - Çırağan Palace Kempinski Istanbul: https://www.kempinski.com/en/ciragan-palace 31:05 - Kempinski Palace Engelberg Titlis Swiss Alps: https://www.kempinski.com/en/kempinski-palace-engelberg Ways to Tune In: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPXApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1sAmazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419

On this episode we hear from Heide. From a young age she always had the feeling of wanting to be a host and that is what then drew her into hospitality. I loved how she said that when she first went looking for some work experience, she applied to the five Michelin starred restaurants in Germany, and only them, because she wanted the best experience. She went onto to focus on marketing during her education and that is where she started her career after graduating. She worked for LVMH, then after a PR education in Germany, worked at a PR agency before coming back to hospitality with Kempinski. You will hear throughout the conversation is that career changes came to her when she started asking herself the questions, whether this was the right role for her and what kind of lifestyle she wanted for herself. After four years at Soho House in Berlin she took on her next transformation and started her own business, an Italian deli. We also discussed the importance of taking a break, even if it means you do not have another job to go. It is super scary, as I have experienced myself, but we both agreed that without it it would never give us the mental space that we needed. She has recently sold her deli and taking that break to reflect on what comes next.

Here's how we support you beyond just the time you're taking away for your parental leave.'”“People show up when they are given the flexibility to do so.”“So often, I think we do such wonderful things in our sector for all of the clients and program users that we serve. Duncan O'Rourke holds a degree from César Ritz Colleges in Switzerland and a MBA from Reims Management School. With more than 30 years' experience within the industry, he held several executive positions in Europe, the US and the Middle East. From 2004, he served as General Manager for Kempinski in various destinations before being promoted to the position of Regional Director overseeing the Operations of the properties in the Middle East. In his capacity, he has been responsible for more than 470 hotels and 13 brands within Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Duncan became a member of the Group's Executive Committee upon his appointment to CEO Northern Europe in October 2020.Duncan believes “Inspiring Leadership” is something you cannot train or learn, it is something you grow into. It is a person having a mission, a guiding principle, and a very specific way to approach things. It is about building a team, to look at the big picture and embark everyone on your journey. An inspiring leader enables the experts in their team to grow and to blossom and to exceed their own expectations. A firm believer in values, Duncan also believes that inspiring leadership also means staying true to what you believe in and celebrating diverse opinions.Duncan embraces the challenges of success. “When you are promoted, when you step up, it is normal to be afraid and I have always kept this fear throughout my career. It is a fundamental part of respecting the challenge ahead of you.”Duncan's best advice was built from a conversation with his VP many years ago. “I was asked about my plans for the Grand Opening of the hotel. When asked how the launch was looking I said “pretty good” – the response from my VP has stayed with me always: “pretty good is not good enough”. That has served me well – you want to deliver as best as you can and that drives me.” Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

As leaders we want to find balance in our own lives. One important way to achieve this is to support your team in discovering their own balance. When a team member goes on parental leave, it creates a gap in the workplace, and a potential for imbalance. If not handled intentionally, the transition can be difficult for the team member (they can feel out of the loop and unappreciated) and the team (they may take on more work and burnout). Lacey Kempinski is the Founder of Balanced Good. She works with organizations and individuals in the social profit sector to help fill parental leave vacancies. Lacey understands how helping successfully make the transition into parenthood then back into the workplace is critical for a successful organization to keep engaged, hard-working employees loyal and avoid team burnout. In this episode, Jeannette talks to Duncan O´Rourke who is the Chief Executive Officer of Northern Europe at Accor. He talks about his early life, living in South Africa, and then being educated in an English boarding school. How these things shaped the man he became and the career path he chose to follow. Duncan explains what it is like to run a brand that serves multiple sectors of the travel business. They also talk about how to build a strong team even though there is a severe shortage of talented people, at the moment. Dealing with the challenge of climbing the corporate ladder. As well as learning to switch gears and stop being the CEO when you are at home. KEY TAKEAWAYS What luxury is and means to people is constantly changing. Personalised service is a key component of what people expect from a luxury brand. You can't manage the IBIS brand the same way you manage the Raffles Hotel brand. But attention to detail is essential at all levels of the hotel industry. Climbing the corporate ladder is stressful. For every new role, you will have holes in your knowledge. Being honest about what you don't know is important. Stress is a part of respecting the challenge that you are facing. Surround yourself with people who are better than you. Employ self-starters who have sound values. There is a massive shortage of talented staff within the travel industry. Duncan estimates between 10 and 15%. During times of crisis, clear and regular communication is vital. Diversifying your team must not be about quotas. You just need to be genuinely open to hiring the right person for the job. BEST MOMENTS ‘For me, luxury is limited by definition, it is personalised. ´ ‘During those times when you have those sleepless nights, remind yourself what is going right.' ‘Our clients are diverse, so we embrace diversity and think it's important.' ‘Pretty good is not good enough. You always want to deliver your best.' This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. It's never too late to be BRAVE and BOLD and unlock your inner BRILLIANCE.
