Women Finishing Well
Episode 130 - How Courage and Endurance Work Together

Women Finishing Well

In this episode Chris interviews author and blogger Melanie Davis Porter about the partnership of courage and endurance. To allow perseverance to "finish its work" (James 1:4), we need courage to be in it for the long haul with God. Show Notes & Links: -Elisabeth Elliot's perspective on suffering: "having what you don't want to wanting what you don't have." -Is busyness a distraction that pulls us away from God? -Galatians 6:9: Don't get weary doing the right thing. When the time is right you will reap a harvest if you don't give up. Melanie's tips to develop persevere in your quest to start a daily time with God: 1. Start with the right mindset (Pr. 24:16): If we see ourselves as dearly loved and accepted children of God, we will have a better chance of living like one. 2. Just ask: If our goal is to spend a quiet time with him daily, ask Him to give you that desire. Transformation happens in God's presence. 3. Keep a journal: writing down your thoughts and observations can keep you on track and block out distractions. 4. For Bible study/reading: Use Bible study books, devotional apps. Try the Proverbs 31 First 5 app or the YouVersion app to find reading plans (see links below). 5. Build a habit that works with your lifestyle. The rules are not as important as the relationship. -God will stir a fire in us as we go to Him (2 Ti. 1:6). The more we are in His Word, the more we will want to be there. Melanie Bieli is a special guest in more than one way. She’s the first junior scientist to appear on Deep Convection, having just finished her Ph.D. a year ago; but more importantly, she’s the co-creator and creative director of the podcast. So she has been part of all the previous episodes, silently --- but on this episode you can actually hear her voice. Melanie was born and raised in Switzerland. She did her MS degree at ETH Zurich, in Atmospheric Science, and then spent a couple of years working in the reinsurance industry, at Swiss Re in Zurich, studying extreme weather risk. That was a good job, and could easily have led to a permanent career and nice life in her home country. But Melanie didn’t feel challenged enough by that life, so she left to do a Ph.D. in Applied Math at Columbia. “Whenever I get too comfortable, I make decisions that get me out of my comfort zone." Melanie wrote her doctoral thesis on the extratropical transition of tropical cyclones, and is now a postdoc at Caltech working with Tapio Schneider’s CliMA project to design a new climate model. She’s thinking about her next steps. They may or may not be in academia. You can see all your peers starting their post doc positions and [...] my natural reaction to that is, let me not go with the flow. Melanie and Adam recorded this episode in Costa Rica, while there for the NSF OTREC field campaign, just a few days after Melanie’s thesis defense. Besides her life and career to date, they talk about religion and spirituality, the merits of academic vs. private sector jobs, and how to maximize one’s positive impact on the world. “Most people want to have, want to feel like they’re having an impact...they want something that’s emotionally satisfying and not necessarily... if you actually evaluate what your contribution is to the world, that would actually look good in that evaluation.” The interview with Melanie Bieli was recorded in August 2019. Find Melanie on Linkedin. Here is a blog post she wrote while in the field in Costa Rica. And you may hear her voice again if you keep listening to Deep Convection in future!

Melanie has been creating successful events for nonprofit and social clients for over a decade in the Greater Boston area. With many high profile clients in the sports & entertainment arena...she is the Go-To Gal for fundraising events! She is a truly dedicated member of her community and is always there to support a charity or meaningful cause, and lend a helping hand. Due to the challenging time for the live events industry, Melanie has shifted her attention to Katama Bay, a web design & digital marketing firm with business partner Chuck Meredith, near Boston, MA. They strive to add value to small and medium-sized businesses by increasing and maintaining their online presence through search-optimized design and targeted marketing, web design, brand awareness, organic and paid search, and social media management. During the pandemic, she advises all of her clients (such as restaurants and other services) to get COVID-19 safety certified (cleaning, screening forms, etc), reinvent themselves, consider new offerings and services (remote, Zoom, etc.), get organized, and update websites and photos of the business while they have this time. Wellness, self-care and physical fitness (she's in great shape, people!) are her cornerstones to keeping sane, healthy and positive during this time in quarantine with her husband Billy (my not-so-secret crush!) and her 2 adorable kids. Melanie recently started meditating with the help of the Oprah & Deepak Chopra app...which has given her a newfound balance, sense of calm and focus. Today on the show Jodi interviews Melanie Deziel, author of The Content Fuel Framework (2020). Here are some highlights from their conversation: Jodi and Melanie discussed the origin of her book. Melanie wanted to be able to share what she teaches on stage in a one-to-one format that’s accessible to anyone (i.e., not just those whose boss hires her to deliver a training or sends them to a conference).  Melanie described the writing and publishing process as a fun one with a big learning curve. The scale of a book is so different from what she (and most author-entrepreneurs) is used to writing, that when she was able to break it down into what felt familiar, it made a big difference. Thinking of chapters as articles made the word count seem less daunting. That long time line, coupled with no one seeing the manuscript for so long, was challenging for Melanie. Melanie noted that she had actually started another book before The Content Fuel Framework, but that during the writing process she realized that The Content Fuel Framework is the book her audience needs now/first. Because Melanie’s book release coincided with the coronavirus pandemic, most of her scheduled speaking and training engagements were canceled/moved to virtual events. Her plan is to package the book with workshops, allowing for bulk buying. Melanie encouraged aspiring author-entrepreneurs to consider their approach when starting the process. If you don’t break “I want to write a book” into steps, it can get overwhelming quickly. She also noted the importance of having people you trust to talk to about the process. Melanie shared that she recently read Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men by Caroline Criado Perez and Giftology:The Art and Science of Using Gifts to Cut Through the Noise, Increase Referrals, and Strengthen Client Retention (https://www.amazon.com/Giftology-Increase-Referrals-Strengthen-Retention-ebook/dp/B01FT16BPM/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=giftology&qid=1586439911&s=digital-text&sr=1-1) by John Ruhlin and is currently reading fiction, which is unusual for her: Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. Melanie Klein—sociology and women's studies professor, empowerment coach, speaker, author, and consciousness raiser—shares that the best way to get to the other side of a life-shattering experience is to take a wide perspective on the phrase "you are not alone." Know that the trauma you're experiencing is part of a larger matrix, and individual healing is an opportunity to have an impact on the collective: when we heal ourselves, we heal everyone. Melanie learned this lesson while enduring several traumatic experiences, including disordered eating, sexual harassment and violence, an abusive relationship, low self-esteem, and compulsive exercise. This month I'm taking the month off and sharing reruns of my favorite episodes from season 1. This one is particularly timely because I've been having a lot of conversations about twice-exceptionality lately. Impossible. The world seems to throw this word at you a lot, doesn’t it? For Intense, Exceptional, Gifted, and Intuitive people, our greatest strengths are often viewed as weaknesses and disabilities. When the world tries to label your dreams impossible, what can you do to harness your fire and show the world who’s boss? Wouldn’t you like to know there’s someone who has walked that hard road before, and come out the other end burning brighter than before?   Dr. Melanie Hayes is the founder of Big Minds Unschool, a program that allows Twice Exceptional students to thrive in their own unique gifts. Melanie is also Twice Exceptional, and she knows what it is like to be a bright fire in a world that feels too small for her. After growing up with “impossible” dreams, Melanie learned to make her vision a reality. Now she is using her fire through coaching and Big Minds to change the world. This week, she will share her stories of growing up, success through unconventionality, and wisdom to inspire you to take the word “impossible” and transform it into a force of good. Also in this episode:    Melanie grew up as an intense kid with a bit of an existential, otherworldly perspective. A fascination with twice exceptional minds. Working within the extremes of life, and when life doesn’t seem to want to work with you! Speaking up for intense kids in schools. Learning to trust yourself and your instincts. Why is it so hard to recognize our gifts? Overcoming fear and letting go of limitations. Life-coaching a holistic being. Roundabout career paths and connecting to the work you do. Today we're wrapping up our Friendship Over 40 series with New York Times bestselling author Melanie Shankle! Ahh, you guys, she's so funny. I laughed my way through this whole thing. We chat about her 30-year friendship with her best friend Gully and how it's hard making new friends during this stage of life, as well as the things we're talking about with our friends, sexy things like waning eyesight and needing readers to see a menu, the joys of perimenopause, and our 40-something periods. (Women in their forties are so hot, and I do mean literally.) When has it ever been more important to get women onto the Hill to remove the legislative male hands from our uteri? Never before.  And thank God Melanie Childers is on the case because she is empowering, clearing and firing up the hearts of women who are stepping into the political arena for the first time.  She doesn't only coach women running for office but the power with which she does comes through this interview and into all of our hearts.  She helps us all imagine stepping into our CEO energy, or what we here call our Superhero of Love! You can't help but feel empowered when in her presence.   If you know a woman that you would like to run for office, PASS THIS ON TO HER!   If you know a woman in Georgia (one of the 8 states to pass legislation set to harm Roe v. Wade) then definitely PASS THIS EPISODE ON TO HER because Melanie informs us that many of the races in Georgia are run unchecked.  There are no Dem contenders in many races. If you know a woman who isn't quite feeling her power, PASS THIS ON TO HER, because this is a fire starter for all our hearts -- whether politically inclined or political-averse.
