Melanie was the first editor of branded content at The New York Times, a founding member of HuffPost's brand storytelling team, and served as Director of Creative Strategy for Time Inc. MEMORABLE MOMENTS:“Sometimes the best thing you can do for your content is to find someone who has the time and passion to be able to dedicate to that to help you make it what you want it to be.”“My top recommendation is to figure out where your audience is; one, maybe two, places and really focus your effort on content creation and connecting there. Because if you spread yourself too thin, you're gonna have a whole lot of mediocre content that gets you no results. I'd much rather see you be awesome in one or two places than mediocre in 12” “If you can start with the focus: ‘What do I want to say? What can I talk about?'  Then you switch to ‘How do I bring that to life?' That makes the whole process so much easier.”“It helps to start from a place of abundance instead of from a place of scarcity. Like, I'm not sure what to post, I don't know what to say…you're starting with 100. That's your new baseline zero.”“For me, confidence comes from a place of knowledge and understanding. I feel most confident when I know that I can teach and add value; that I have something that I can give. I know at the end of that conversation, I can feel confident that I've done something of value.” Connect with Melanie:⭐ Connect on Twitter @mdeziel⭐ linkedin.com/in/melaniedeziel⭐ storyfuel.co Connect with Allison:⭐ Connect on Instagram @allisonwalsh⭐ JOIN THE SOCIETY: www.shebelievedsociety.com (use code 2022 to access the Society for $22/month)⭐ JOIN OUR FREE COMMUNITY: https://www.facebook.com/groups/shebelievedshecouldcommunity⭐ Check out book recommendations from the show here⭐ LEARN MORE about THINKIFIC COMMUNITIES here

In today's business world, it's not enough to tell people what you good at, why they should hire you, or that they should trust you. In fact, if you do tell them to trust you, they will probably doubt you. What you need to do today is prove it to your customers. That's why, in today's episode, I am speaking with Melanie Deziel, co-author of the new marketing book Prove It. In this conversation, Melanie and I discuss the growing sophistication and skepticism of consumers and our mutual belief that the onus is absolutely on the business – not the consumer – to build trust in a business/consumer relationship. We also touch on the importance of being truly committed to the claims you make about your business and how this is especially important to today's consumer, as well as how to use Melanie's process for performing a “claim audit” on the claims you're making to your customers.   Melanie Deziel is a keynote speaker, author, award-winning branded content creator, and the author of the best-selling marketing and business communications book, “The Content Fuel Framework: How to Generate Unlimited Story Ideas.” Melanie is also the Co-Founder and VP of Marketing at The Convoy, a B2B marketplace that helps small and independent businesses save money on their everyday expenses so they can invest more in themselves and their communities.  Prior to co-founding The Convoy, Melanie was the founder of StoryFuel and spent her days giving keynotes and leading workshops that teach marketers, creators, and companies of all sizes how to create better content. Today we have Melanie Deziel, the founder and chief content officer at StoryFuel, a company that equips marketers, creators, and sales professionals with the skill and strategies that they need to tell better brand stories. Whether you work for a corporate brand - or you’re a personal brand - we all have something in common. In order to persuade people to buy from us, work with us, or tell others about us, we have to be able to create powerful messages and stories that connect with our intended audience, and position us for success. So, wouldn’t it be nice if there was some type of framework that could help us to choose a focus and format to tell our story, so we could create content that serves our mission in the best possible way? Well, thankfully, there is a framework, and my guest today literally wrote the book on it. Melanie Deziel is a keynote speaker, award-winning branded content creator, and a lifelong storyteller on a mission to share the power of creating compelling and credible content with others. Melanie is the Founder and Chief Content Officer of StoryFuel, a company that teaches marketers, creators and organizations how to tell better brand stories, and she’s the author of the best-selling book - The Content Fuel Framework: How to Generate Unlimited Story Ideas. I’ve enjoyed reading Melanie’s book, and have found the 10 x 10 content fuel framework helpful as I’ve had to re-think how I connect with my community, and share my message while speaking on stages around the world is not an option. In our conversation today, Melanie shares how her experience as a journalist and content strategist for some of the most well-known companies and brands in the world was helpful to her when she decided to start and market her own business, and how she’s now on a mission to help others to create content that they can be proud of, and will get their messages heard.   Topics Discussed In This Episode: How the storytelling process used by corporate brands is similar to telling your own story as a personal brand. The importance of understanding what is important to you, the message that you want to convey to your audience, and how your personal experiences can provide relevance and timeliness about your topic. How Melanie applied her experience as a journalist and with storytelling to market her business once she went out on her own. How volunteering to help sales people with client pitches led to Melanie becoming a successful international keynote speaker. How the 10 x 10 grid of the Content Fuel Framework evolved from a series of presentations, to a workshop, then a keynote, and ultimately a book. The challenges associated with launching a book during a global pandemic, and how Melanie has gotten creative to promote the book in non-traditional ways. How to choose a focus and format to tell your story, and to create content that serves your mission in the best possible way. Two things that a company - or a person - needs to consider before creating and sharing content, in order to get their message heard.   People & Resources Mentioned In This episode: Melanie Deziel Melanie Deziel LinkedIn Melanie Deziel Twitter Melanie Deziel Instagram Storyfuel The Content Fuel Framework: How to Generate Unlimited Story Ideas (For Marketers and Creators) by Melanie Deziel   Connect with Jennifer: Send her a message [https://jennifermcclure.net/contact/] On LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/jennifermcclure On Twitter: https://twitter.com/JenniferMcClure On Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jennifer_mcclure/ On Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/JenniferMcClureSpeaker *** EPISODE CREDITS: If you like this podcast and are thinking of creating your own, consider talking to my producer, Danny Ozment. Join me on this week's episode as I talk to master story-teller and re-emerging pandemic parent, Melanie Deziel, about all the things. What does becoming a new mother, abruptly moving from a 600 square ft apartment, and launching a new book have in common? These are just a few of the unexpected adventures Melanie shares in this episode. Melanie is a keynote speaker, an award-winning branded content creator, and a lifelong storyteller on a mission to share the power of compelling and credible content with others. She is the founder and chief content officer of Storyfuel, which teaches marketers, publishers, creators, and companies of all sizes how to tell better brand stories. She is also the author of The Content Fuel Framework, How to Generate Unlimited Story Ideas. Melanie and her husband found themselves in a 600 square ft. apartment with a new baby and everyone suddenly working at home. They made a list of all the things that were important to them and surprisingly, Raleigh, North Carolina topped the list, so they moved during the pandemic to have more space and be closer to nature. The pandemic made them realize the importance of having a home that would support their wellbeing and minimize their stress levels. Melanie studied journalism at a time when journalism was really changing and there were no jobs for a new graduate, so she found a home in marketing and started using her story-telling skills for brands that needed her skillset. We are living in a remarkable world where we are all content creators. Many marketers think of content only as a way to alert people about our new products or a new sale. It's very transactional. Content can actually be so much more powerful when they're telling transformative stories about the lives they're changing or the customers they've served. Every content piece that you've either created or consumed was made up of two things: a focus and a format. High school students and college students are doing incredible special effects work, amazing video editing, creating music and so much more. The creativity, skills, and the technology they are learning at such a young age is incredible. Digital has democratized all these incredible skills for this whole generation.

Today on the show Jodi interviews Melanie Deziel, author of The Content Fuel Framework (2020). Here are some highlights from their conversation: Jodi and Melanie discussed the origin of her book. Melanie wanted to be able to share what she teaches on stage in a one-to-one format that’s accessible to anyone (i.e., not just those whose boss hires her to deliver a training or sends them to a conference).  Melanie described the writing and publishing process as a fun one with a big learning curve. The scale of a book is so different from what she (and most author-entrepreneurs) is used to writing, that when she was able to break it down into what felt familiar, it made a big difference. Thinking of chapters as articles made the word count seem less daunting. That long time line, coupled with no one seeing the manuscript for so long, was challenging for Melanie. Melanie noted that she had actually started another book before The Content Fuel Framework, but that during the writing process she realized that The Content Fuel Framework is the book her audience needs now/first. Because Melanie’s book release coincided with the coronavirus pandemic, most of her scheduled speaking and training engagements were canceled/moved to virtual events. Her plan is to package the book with workshops, allowing for bulk buying. Melanie encouraged aspiring author-entrepreneurs to consider their approach when starting the process. If you don’t break “I want to write a book” into steps, it can get overwhelming quickly. She also noted the importance of having people you trust to talk to about the process. Melanie shared that she recently read Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men by Caroline Criado Perez and Giftology:The Art and Science of Using Gifts to Cut Through the Noise, Increase Referrals, and Strengthen Client Retention (https://www.amazon.com/Giftology-Increase-Referrals-Strengthen-Retention-ebook/dp/B01FT16BPM/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=giftology&qid=1586439911&s=digital-text&sr=1-1) by John Ruhlin and is currently reading fiction, which is unusual for her: Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. I just love reading books about business and marketing. And – every once in a while, I come across a book that I just love so much, I want others to know about it. One of my latest favorite books is The Content Fuel Framework by Melanie Deziel. Why I love this book is that it’s a really more of an active tool than it is something to read. Too often, business books are good on theory – but – they lack any practical use. This book is so practical that Melanie gives you an easy tool that you can use to quickly come up with 100 Content Ideas. And it’s a tool that you will be able to continually use moving forward. Fortunately, in today’s day and age, social media allows one to pretty easily connect with influencers, authors and others. So, I took the liberty of quickly connecting with Melanie – and – I was so excited when she agreed to join me for this podcast episode. What’s really interesting for this episode is that it’s the first one I did where I didn’t really have any formal questions figured out ahead of time. Typically, I have a good idea of what I’m going to ask – but – this episode just seemed like it would be different from the start. Instead of the normal Q&A that I do, we decided that we’d just go through part of her Content Fuel Framework (the 10 Content Types) and let her explain each type. Then, I’d see if I could come up with some content ideas specific to home building. It turns out, the conversation was really good. In the span of about 40 minutes, I had 10 good content ideas generated that you could use right now! To be honest, it was more than 10 – but – you’ll get the picture when you listen. Melanie is a super cool guest – and – you’ll be able to tell that I am a Super Fan of her new book. So, grab your notebook (paper or digital) – and – get ready to have content ideas you can use as early as 45 minutes from now!

I'll admit, as someone who is constantly creating content, I'm often overwhelmed by it. But it is a topic that frequently comes up in my client sessions and one that is especially relevant right now. At a time when many of us are home and working on sharing more content with the world, it is important to make sure that what we create still has a purpose. With all the formats available to us now, how can we get our message out, support our business, and still keep ideas fresh, new, and interesting? Most people gravitate to formats they're most comfortable in. I, for one, much prefer audio over writing. So how can we Creative Warriors stretch ourselves and not just benefit from unfamiliar formats, but feel confident in them, too?  To help us dig into how to tap into unlimited content ideas, I've brought on author, speaker, and online educator, Melanie Deziel. Melanie Deziel is the founder of StoryFuel, the author of “The Content Fuel Framework: How to Generate Unlimited Story ideas,” and an international keynote speaker recognized as one of the world's leading experts in native advertising and branded content. As a speaker, she's taught marketers around the globe to brainstorm better, think like journalists and tell better brand stories. She is a member of the National Speakers Association, and has graced the stages of industry-leading events like Content Marketing World, Native Ad Days, Social Media Marketing World, Inbound, SXSW, and more.  Melanie believes that with the right framework, everyone is capable of creating unlimited content. To learn how to ignite your story fuel, download this episode now. THE WARRIOR OF SYSTEMS “Do the work, before the work.” - Melanie Deziel Highlights - With the right framework, everyone can strengthen their content creating muscles.  Don't create content just to create content. It needs to drive your purpose.  Every piece of content is made up of focus and format.  A lot of online search is people looking for process-based, or how-to, content.  The best way to tell a story is to find one example that makes the case for your point and tell that smaller story in great detail. Adding a personal opinion can be a helpful tool for differentiating content.  Repurposing and reformatting existing content is a good place to start in unfamiliar formats. Have you ever wondered what it felt like to do a storytelling act, but this time in front of an audience filled with corporate? Well, here's a piece on someone who lives that. Melanie Deziel is the founder of StoryFuel, a consulting firm that teaches marketers around the world how to tell better brand stories.  She is an award-winning branded-content creator and sits on the board of the  Native  Advertising  Institute. Today we take a look at her life and perspective to her work. First, a few Achievements Melanie was the first editor of branded content at The  New York Times. She developed the first Master's course in Content Marketing for Fairleigh Dickinson University, where she now teaches as an adjunct professor and has degrees in investigative journalism and arts editing. In addition to her work with  The  New  York  Times'  T  Brand  Studio, Melanie was one of the founders of The Huffington  Post's Brand Storytelling team and is the former Director of Creative Strategy for Time Inc., worked on brand across all 35+ US  publications. Unlocking her Storytelling Instincts It might interest you to know that Melanie believes in tapping into the storytelling instinct and curiosity of kids while at work – bringing the power in that mindset into professional brand publishing. Her storytelling is always poised to captivate her given audience and have them hooked on the subject without misleading them in any way by her story. "I encourage people to think about three things – the acronym to help you remember is the ‘P.R.E.' this is your pre-strategy before creating the product." Melanie gave this response when quizzed about her tricks in helping people unlock the stories within them. She explained further; stating that The ‘P' represents the Product. Whatever the product or service is, you can create content around it. Then there's the ‘R' which represents the Role that marketers and publishers can play in the customer's life; what you can help them achieve, how their needs can be prioritized and met, what differences can you can make in their lives. The ‘E' is for Emotion. Melanie believes that everything we buy or engage within the world is an emotion and that products and services spark up a feeling in some way or the other. "There's something that that product or that purchase or that service is giving us on an emotional level, and when we could create stories that tap into the emotion, those are often some of the most powerful stories that we can tell" Melanie Said.. Fact and Fiction: Where she draws the Line Melanie makes an effort in her work to always present her views from a journalism-side of things. She focuses on ensuring that her storytelling is built to stay true to the critical needs of her audience. She believes in studying audiences and taking time to know what they would relate better to, as this can be a positive step towards achieving more significant progress with clients. The NetFlix Case Study She spoke fondly about her time as a staff in strategy development with the New York Times. The opportunity to offer marketing solutions to NetFlix regarding the TV show; Orange is the new black. The series boasts a true life story. "Orange is the New Black is based on a book; it's based on a true story. But we don't feel people know that. We feel that they think it's just a SitCom or these are made up satiations." Melanie recalls being told by Netflix She would go on (along with her team) to put together a long-form investigative report with a 3-part mini documentary and Info-graphics telling a story of what it is really like to be a woman in prison. "We interviewed current and former inmates of various women's prisons; we talked to prison reform workers, sociologists, activists, people who work inside the prisons, to tell that story: what is that experience like really?" Melanie said. This experience, while working with NetFlix inspired Melanie a lot and improved her drive to always want to have a storytelling pattern that pitches the crucial facts and figures to the public, even while mixing in a bit of entertainment or fiction. Speaking on Gratitude  As non-surprising as it sounds in Melanie's case, she owes a lot of gratitude to her husband whom she refers to as her number one fan.  And indeed she confirmed that a lot of the professionals and team members she has had the opportunity to work with have had a tremendous impact on her career. "It means so much to me, just to be surrounded by people who are sharing their talents and time with me and getting to share my talents and time with them. It absolutely means the world to me, and changes the way I look at my business." Melanie said. Her Journey to Public Speaking JJust like many renowned speakers, Melanie started in public speaking by first trying it out by accident, and then getting to like it. She had filled in for a colleague at an event, and gave an oral presentation at the time, and recalls feeling great after the event. "I loved that people came up afterward and said ‘this changed my opinion, this changed the way I'm going to do things' I feeling like I really have an impact," she said while defining how glad she had felt. "I looked for more opportunities to do that, to go out and represent and talk about the work that my team was doing, I also saw that it was the kind of thing that I enjoyed more than most of the other aspects of my job." Keeping up with her drive to do more public speaking, Melanie started her own consulting and speaking company three years ago – teaching marketers and brands how to tell stories. Admittedly it hasn't been an easy road – starting small and putting in a lot of work. Melanie recalls having had low, and no-paying gigs at her early startup. But her focus was never daunted.  She believes that loving her job and the fulfillment from helping the people she interacts with while on and off stage has been a massive boost in her confidence to keep going. Advice for Speakers "When you are stuck up on that stage, it is not about you. It is about the audience and the value you give them and the way you serve them best" Melanie said. She believes that one of the biggest errors a speaker can make is to be focused on themselves while going on stage – rather than on the audience. It would only be logical to agree with her mindset that it doesn't matter if a speaker makes a fool of his/herself as long as the right impact is passed on to the target audience.
