As a teacher, are you more of a Big Bird or a Mr. Rogers? Educators Christy Waite and Melanie Jones discuss how developing a teaching persona, inspired by the blend of fantasy and reality in "Sesame Street" and "Mr. Roger's Neighborhood" can both captivate students and pose challenges, especially when balancing performance with effective teaching strategies.
Chad Crane, an instructional coach, reflects on his new role and the challenges he faces, particularly when a teacher, Melanie Jones, expresses the desire for a new personality to become more engaging in the classroom. The episode explores the tension between the cultural expectations of an ideal teacher persona, often favoring extroverted traits, and the reality that effective teaching can take many forms, including those aligned with quieter, introverted personalities.

Forests have always been magical places. But in the last couple decades, they seem to have gotten a little more magical. We've learned that trees are connected to each other through a vast underground network—an internet of roots and fungi often called the "wood wide web". We've learned that, through this network, trees share resources with each other. And we've learned that so-called mother trees look out for their own offspring, preferentially sharing resources with them. There's no question that this is all utterly fascinating. But what if it's also partly a fantasy? My guest today is Dr. Justine Karst. Justine is a forest ecologist at the University of Alberta. Her research focuses on mycorrhizas—these are the symbioses formed between fungi and plant roots that are thought to be the basis of the "wood wide web." Last year, Justine and colleagues published a perspective piece in which they argued that some of the claims around the wood wide web have gotten out of hand. These new ideas about forests, they argued, have gotten decoupled from the actual on-the-ground—or under-the-ground—science. In reality, it's a field still riddled with unknowns and mixed findings. Here, Justine and I do a bit of mycorrhiza 101—we talk about what mycorrhizas are, how they evolved, and what the structures actually look like. We discuss the original 1997 study that inspired the term "wood wide web." We consider why it's so hard to figure out what's actually going on, mechanistically, under the forest floor. We discuss the increasingly popular notion of plant intelligence and what it means to empirical researchers in this area like Justine. We talk about why people—both members of the public and scientists themselves—have found wood wide web ideas so charming. And, finally, we discuss the question of whether a little bit of hype is really so bad—particularly if it gets people excited about forests, about science, and about conversation. I got as excited about the "wood wide web" as anyone. The idea totally captured my imagination a couple of years ago. So I was intrigued—if also a little dismayed—to learn recently that these ideas were getting some pushback. And I knew immediately we should talk to one of the researchers leading that pushback. Alright friends, let's get to it. On to my conversation with Dr. Justine Karst. Enjoy! A transcript of this episode will be available soon. Notes and links 5:00 – Popular treatments sometimes mentioned as over-hyping the wood wide web (and associated ideas) include The Hidden Life of Trees, Finding the Mother Tree, and the novel The Overstory. 9:30 – The landmark 1997 paper by Simard et al. that kicked off interest in the so-called wood wide web. 11:00 – A study showing that fungi are more closely related to animals than to plants. 11:30 – For more on the new interest in “plant intelligence” see our previous episodes here and here. On the notion of “fungal intelligence,” see here. 18:00 – A 1975 paper presenting a hypothesis about the origins of land plants. 20:00 – The California “mushroom bible” mentioned. 23:00 – A brief post (and infographic) on the differences between arbuscular mycorrhizas and ectomycorrhizas. 23:30 – Richard Powers' influential novel, The Overstory. Note that the novel doesn't exclusively focus on the wood wide web; it covers of ideas and findings about trees and forests, many of which are uncontroversial. 36:00 – Dr. Karst co-authored her perspective piece in Nature Ecology & Evolution with Dr. Melanie Jones and Dr. Jason Hoeksma. 50:00 – For more on aspens and how constitute clonal organisms, see here. 52:00 – The “mother tree” idea was popularized in Dr. Suzanne Simard's book, Finding the Mother Tree. 1:04:00 – Another recent critique of the wood wide web and mother tree idea is here. In it the authors write: “Reaching out to the general public to make people care about forests is certainly a praiseworthy goal, but not when it involves the dissemination of a distorted view of the plant world. In other words: the end does not justify the means.” 1:05:30 – Others influenced by The Overstory include Barack Obama and Bill Gates. 1:09:00 – A primer on myco-heterotrophic plants. 1:13:00 – See a recent presentation by Dr. Jared Farmer on trees and “chronodiversity” here. Festival Season is the best time for us to revisit our Conversation with Melanie Jones, an art curator, Disney enthusiast, and Owner of Chapter Three Art and Disney Festival of the Arts expert, as they discuss this week's topic: “Festivals and Art Need to Be Emotion-Evoking Experiences.” In this episode of the Customer's First Podcast, Melanie shares her passion for art and her journey in forming Chapter Three Art. It all started with her collection of Beauty and the Beast memorabilia, which sparked her admiration for artists and their ability to evoke emotions through their work. Chapter Three Art became a platform for Melanie to introduce others to Disney and other types of art and share stories from fellow collectors. Through this endeavour, Melanie has formed strong relationships with artists and has become an integral part of their creative process. The conversation then delves into the Festival of the Arts, which initially started as the Festival of the Masters and has now blossomed into a month-long event. The Festival offers various activities such as art exhibits, merchandise, food, meeting the artists, live painting, acrobatics, chalk art, drawing classes, and more. Melanie emphasizes the interactive exhibits, including a paint-by-number mural where participants can contribute, sketching classes with Disney artists, live painting performances, and 3D chalk art. They both highlight the need for ample time to experience the Festival fully, as there is so much to see and do. Melanie shares her experiences at the Festival, emphasizing the importance of meeting and conversing with the artists. Viewing the art in person and learning about the artist's inspiration and techniques adds a deeper connection to the artwork. She highlights two artists Tacey is curious about: Michelle St. Laurent, a watercolour artist known for her attention to detail, and Michael Provenza, who utilizes points and filters light through his paintings. Melanie believes attending the Festival allows people to discover new art and artists they may have yet to discover otherwise. Melanie further emphasizes the opportunity to meet new artists and purchase art at the Festival. The ongoing demand for art and the chance to reconnect with pieces from the past make it an exciting experience. They also discuss how the Festival's level of service and experience can translate into other industries, such as hospitality. Melanie shares her dreams of opening Chapter Three Art Cafe, a gallery space offering more than just art. She envisions a relaxing environment where people can enjoy art while sipping coffee or wine, with possible open mic or poetry reading nights. Melanie aims to create an ongoing experience for art enthusiasts rather than a limited-time event like the Festival. The conversation shifts to Melanie's experiences collecting Disney pins and attending pin events. She discusses her collection, which is focused on Beauty and the Beast and currently contains over 900 pins. Melanie expresses excitement for future adventures in the world of art and collecting. Finally, Melanie shares her experiences living in Florida, close to the parks, and the opportunity to visit the Art of Disney at Disney Springs. She plans to interview and write about local and visiting artists throughout the year, further expanding her knowledge and connections in the art world. The episode concludes with a message to the listeners, encouraging them to attend the Festival of the Arts, even if they don't plan on purchasing art, as it offers a chance to learn something new and have a transformative experience. A horse-riding school in Australia is using cows as animal therapy to help people of all ages. This new type of mental health service is growing rapidly in Australia, but psychologists say national guidelines are necessary for the safety of both humans and animals. Karl McKeown is from Melbourne, Australia. He was born with cerebral palsy and scoliosis and four years ago he suffered a brain aneurysm. Coming to the Euroa Horse Park in Victoria is helping him recover by taking part in animal-assisted therapy. “And it does make you think, you have to slow down. They don't come up to your speed, you've got to go back to theirs and it does give you a whole new focus,” says McKeown. “And they become more aware of their body language, their communication, and the trust and respect grows,” explains Vanessa Hawkins of Euroa Horse Park. Animal-assisted therapy participants say they can feel real mental and physical improvements from being in the presence of animals, but health experts are still on the fence as to the therapy's clinical benefits. This sector is growing very fast in Australia and psychologists say there's an urgent need for national guidelines and regulatory boards. “The field is really in its infancy, and a lot more research is needed,” says Professor Sue Cotton of Orygen Youth Mental Health. “There are a number of countries in Europe that already have legislation in place that stipulates how many hours of training and that sort of thing,” says psychologist Melanie Jones. To help regulate this emerging sector, Wendy Coombe started a non-profit organization. “I think therapy animal, or animal-assisted therapy, has been used across a range of different services that do not always include a therapist,” says Animal Therapies Limited director Wendy Coombe. Experts say people who are considering using this kind of therapy should do their research on the service provider and also ask for guidance from bodies such as the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. “It's on us to actually be really, really clear if we are providing therapeutic services so that vulnerable people in the community don't become misled,” says Jones. Common mycorrhizal networks, commonly referred to as the "wood wide web", have gained considerable attention in popular media in recent years. Multiple books, news articles, and even television shows have alluded to this concept and made bold claims about their impacts on forests, particularly forest seedlings. In this episode, our guests Dr. Justine Karst of the University of Alberta, Dr. Melanie Jones of the University of British Columbia, and Dr. Jason Hoeksema of the University of Mississippi discuss their analysis of the existing research on this topic to determine what we know and, perhaps more importantly, what we don't know.
The concept of the wood wide web in which trees are connected with one another via underground fungal networks has captured imaginations around the globe. The idea that trees may be sharing resources and communicating in seemingly altruistic ways is enticing, but is it true? The data suggest that this is more journalistic fiction than fact. Joining us is Dr. Melanie Jones who has spent her entire career studying common mycorrhizal networks. Join us as we take a data-driven look at the reality of what data tell us about the so-called "wood wide web." Melanie Jones and Todd Simpson, from Berkshire Hathaway company CORT, join Bold Founder, Caleb Parker, to discuss Furniture-as-a-Service (FaaS). In this episode Melanie shares how the term Furniture-as-a-Service was coined, then her and Todd go on to tag team some real life examples of how landlords are partnering with CORT to deliver value to their mutual office customers. We dive into some high level numbers, cover sustainability, and the circular economy. And Caleb's favorite part of this episode of course is how CORT is leaning into the future with their new digital solutions that help landlords close deals faster. And so, planning 10-20 years ahead is not going to be a thing in the future – Caleb Parker Our offering, which is truly circular, has a place in this conversation as we try to make significant steps to help our world – Melanie Jones We're bringing the commercial real estate industry additional tools, additional solutions that they can use to close more business – Todd Simpson There are additional costs and burdens that come from owning furniture. I think a lot of companies aren't really considering those costs when they make a purchase – Todd Simpson A company may say that they're willing to pay a certain premium to have flexibility, so they don't interfere with the business agility, or the high financial cost of getting a real estate decision wrong – Melanie Jones We have customers where they want to expand and explore new markets, but they use subleases and they use Furniture-as-a-Service to get a foothold in the market to stay flexible – Todd Simpson If it's something that's flexing and changeable, reduces risk and capital, then Furniture-as-a-Service must be on the table in the conversation – Melanie Jones The most common scenario I'm seeing going forward, is that operators are going to take a hybrid approach to owning and renting furniture - Todd Simpson Before COVID, densification was the huge thing. Melanie Jones, managing director, Manchester Studios, talks to Broadcast Tech editor Jake Bickerton about her role in bringing fully-equipped high-end TV studios back to Manchester City Centre. Manchester Studios is on the site of the former Granada Studios facility (famously home to many classic LE shows as well as Coronation Street), and is utilising many of the spaces used by productions at Granada Studios. The facility is currently undergoing the complete overhaul and renovation of the former Granada Studios to make the spaces fit for the modern age, complete with an entirely new infrastructure, 4K facilities and plush superstar dressing rooms. In this podcast, Jones talks about how Manchester Studios began by offering drama productions four-waller space in the old Granada Studios building, before setting its sights on TV productions. It opened its first fully kitted-out TV studio space (the 13,000 sq ft 4K Studio 1) at the beginning of June, and now plans to have a full TV studio complex up and running by the end of next year.

G'day legends. Welcome to this special episode of The Cricket Mentoring Podcast. One of the reasons I say it's special is because of our guest, Melanie Jones who I'll go more into in just a second. The second reason this episode is special is because we are recording it in India. The Karnataka Institute of Cricket in Bangalore is a strange place for two Aussies to record a podcast but there's no better setting to discuss the journey of one of Australian crickets true stars. Mel and I are in Bangalore for different reasons - I'm running a Cricket Mentoring Tour for young cricketers from Australia and the UK to experience India and train and play in sub-continent conditions, while Mel is here to commentate on an IPL match in a couple of nights but I didn't want to miss to opportunity to hear the story of this legend… Melanie or Mel Jones is a former Australian cricketer who, in recent years has turned herself into one of the best cricket commentators going around as she travels the world commentating on the major tournaments including the Big Bash, IPL and will soon be in the UK commentating on the World Cup. Mel was an elite player. She played 5 Test matches and 61 One Day Internationals and is a member of the prestigious club of cricketers who have scored a century on Test debut – with 131 against England in the 1998 Ashes series. Having played all her representative cricket when women's cricket wasn't professional, Mel has been a huge advocate for the women's game and is incredibly happy to see the best cricketers in Australia and around the world become professionals in recent years. Since retiring, Mel has done various things but in recent years has built her reputation in commentary boxes around the world. She not only brings a great deal of experience from playing at the highest level to the commentary box, but through her hard work and love of the game she also brings a real depth of knowledge about each and every player. It was awesome to sit down with Mel and hear how a girl from the country has forged a very successful life in cricket both on and off the field. In this episode we discussed: How she began playing cricket at her grandparents place with her older male cousins and how the circumstances in those games, shaped the player she was in international cricket How Peter Handscomb & Sam Harper's fathers played a pivotal role in her cricket career How she was never a ‘pro' and had to manage working bits and pieces job with playing international and domestic cricket How she was ‘stuffing her face with a prawn cocktail' at the back of the room when her name was first read out as being a member of the Australian squad How she took a big leap to leave her steady career to pursue a career as a freelance cricket commentator and how it's paying off in spades Plus a whole lot more. When in India anything can happen, and on cue, the power went out half way through our interview… but as all true professionals do, Mel carried on as if nothing had happened. No doubt you will pick up our mutual love for this beautiful country throughout the conversation. Mel is cricketing royalty and it was a pleasure to spend a morning with her at KIOC. Her energy and passion for the game is obvious which I'm sure you'll hear it in her voice so lets get into this epsiode…
Once again, we return for a packed Geektown Radio podcast, and I'm joined Bex Trista of TristaBytes (who is amazingly not injured this week!) to discuss all the usual tv & film new and air date info, along with a rundown of the fun she had at Play Expo Manchester. We also have an exclusive interview with Production Designer Melanie Jones.Melanie Jones is an award-winning Los Angeles based production designer, with a diverse body of work which includes commercials, television, feature films, print and stage design. She is most well-known for her production design on Damien Chazelle's Oscar-winning 'Whiplash', but is also having a busy spring with three new and completely different projects debuting. For Warner Bros' upcoming horror film, 'The Curse of La Llorona', starring Green Book's Linda Cardellini, Melanie created a haunting, supernatural story world where a family tries to survive the wrath of La Llorona, the ghost of a woman who drowned her children. On Netflix's period Mötley Crüe biopic 'The Dirt', Melanie was responsible for recreating the iconic venues and places that the notorious band, Mötley Crüe, played at.For ABC's upcoming comedy series, 'Bless this Mess', starring Dax Shepard and Lake Bell, Melanie shaped the rural Nebraska home and farm town that newlyweds Rio and Mike leave everything in New York for. Melanie Jones could write a book called "How to Produce and Direct an Award Winning Feature Film for $10,000" except for the fact that she's usually too busy DOING it! 10 years out from Vancouver's Langara College Film Arts Program find Melanie with 13 films and counting. Much of Melanie's work has been accepted on the global film festival circuit. And she still works with some of her former classmates on projects. Melanie recounts for you her lessons learned - hard and soft – along the path to production. Keeping promises to crowdfunding patrons and trying to do too many jobs on set come to mind. In fact, her advice on crowdfunding is priceless. Some lessons are only learned after film school as young producers and directors hit the pavement to gather resources for their projects.
