Behind the stories we're drawn to are the story-tellers who create them. The people who see (and sell) the intangible, who captivate our imagination, and make us gasp for breath, shed a tear, laugh out loud and want to share this experience with others. My guests on this episode are extraordinary story-finders, story-sharers, and story-tellers. I was captivated by not only how they bring the TV series and movies they produce to life, but how they work together, lead their company, and honour themselves, each other, their instincts and their work. Angie Fielder and Polly Staniford founded the award-winning production company Aquarius Films, which has built a reputation for bold, female-led projects, diversity both on and off the screen and intelligent, progressive, and inspiring stories. Aquarius produces high-quality films and television series for global audiences that are commercially successful and critically acclaimed. Film credits include the Academy Award® and Golden Globe nominated Lion, produced in association with See-Saw Films, and starring Dev Patel, Nicole Kidman and Rooney Mara; Berlin Syndrome, Dirt Music, and Wish You Were Here, starring Joel Edgerton and Teresa Palmer, which premiered at Sundance and won two Australian Academy of Cinema and TV (AACTA) Awards, including Best Screenplay, and five Film Critics Circle Awards, including Best Film. And that's just the tip of the ice-berg of what Angie and Polly have created. We chat about the process of producing - what it is and the key role they play in bringing stories to our screens. We have a brilliant conversation about how they navigate uncertainty; and they both shared how they protect the creative energy amongst the busyness of life. There's something magical, engaging and grounded about this conversation. Enjoy the wisdom and insight from Angie Fielder and Polly Staniford.
In this session, Australian screenwriter and producer Shaun Grant speaks with NZ screenwriter Fiona Samuel about his adaptation process, how to choose your next project, and finding your voice as a writer. They touch on his feature films Snowtown, Berlin Syndrome, and most recently Nitram, which was the first Australian film to premiere In Competition at the Cannes Film Festival in a decade. This session is presented by Script to Screen. The Big Screen Symposium was held in Auckland on the 9th and 10th of July 2022.

In this episode I discuss "Berlin Syndrome" (2017) directed by Cate Shortland. Watch the video version of the podcast here https://youtu.be/zcJcQnYwWJE
Australian actress Teresa Palmer has made a great career playing horror and genre films. Her starring roles include the movies RESTRAINT (2008), WARM BODIES (2013), LIGHTS OUT (2016), and BERLIN SYNDROME (2017). She also was the lead for the well received television series A DISCOVERY OF WITHCES that just ended its run this year. Now she's starring in the new film THE TWIN (2022). When Rachel (Teresa Palmer) and Anthony (Steven Cree) have a car accident, one of their twin sons Nathan (Tristan Ruggeri) dies. As grief holds its ugly cloud over the family, they decide to move back to Anthony's home of Finland. As they try to make a new life for themselves, Elliot, their other son, says that Nathan has returned to them. Soon strange things begin to occur around their new house. Shot in Finland and Estonia, the movie was directed Taneli Mustonen and co-written by him and producer Aleksi Hyvarinen. The cast also includes Barbar Marten. The movie made its debut in North America on the television channel Shudder May 6th, 2022. Dark Discussions takes a look at this highly anticipated film and give their thoughts.
Welcome to the 63rd episode of Ten Questions where Adam talks to Shaun Grant - the multi-AACTA Award winning screenwriter of Nitram.Shaun’s debut film, Snowtown, about the infamous Snowtown murders in South Australia in the 1990s – won multiple awards and screened at Critics’ Week at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. And that’s when Shaun’s career took off – writing the feature films Jasper Jones, Berlin Syndrome, Penguin Bloom, The True Story of the Kelly Gang and Nitram. He also wrote for David Fincher’s Mindhunter on Netflix and the mini-series, Deadline Gallipoli. He’s possibly Australia’s most in demand screenwriter, known for his willingness to tackle the weighty emotional subjects that others might see as too dangerous or too difficult to make.Nitram premiered at Cannes a few months ago where the response to the film was unaminously positive. And that’s where my conversation with Shaun started. When asked about the time he was most happy, he said “now”. And he wasn’t just referring to his professional success, which he credits as being partly due to his continuing working relationship with the director Justin Kurzel, but also the fact that he’d recently got married."The violence isn’t on the screen. It’s not that what interests me. It’s what leads to it."More about Out of the Question: https://www.nearly.com.au/out-of-the-question-with-adam-zwar/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. This is a public episode. Director Justin Kurzel and writer Shaun Grant join the Cinema Australia Podcast to discuss their latest collaboration, Nitram. Nitram is a brilliant but highly disturbing film, that will no doubt divide audiences. It depicts the events leading up to one of the darkest chapters in Australian history - the Port Arthur shootings. Kurzel and Grant have been making movies together since 2011 as director and writer respectively. Their first film, Snowtown, landed like a sledgehammer and marked the arrival of two extraordinary filmmaking talents. Nitram is their third collaboration following Snowtown, and the provocative joy ride that is True History of the Kelly Gang. Kurzel's filmography also includes Macbeth and Assissin's Creed, which both starred Michael Fassbender. He also directed a segment of one of my favourite Australian films, The Turning. Shaun Grant's other writing credits include Berlin Syndrome directed by Cate Shortland, Jasper Jones directed by Rachel Perkins, an episode of the American television series Mindhunter, and another film released this year, and another on of my favourites, Penguin Bloom. We do go into some depth during this interview, and I understand that it may not be easy listening for everyone. We discuss the pairs thoughts on Port Arthur conspiracies, Justin's discussions with victims, and why they wanted to make a film about Martin Bryant. Kurzel and Grant also discuss their eagerness to see Nitram with an Australian audience, and being knocked back by Screen Australia before going on to work with Stan and Madman to make the film. It's not all serious though, we do have a few laughs along the way and I ask a question that gets quite a reaction: What happened to Sean Keenan's unbelievably cool cowboy cardigan from True History of the Kelly Gang. Anyway… enjoy.

On today's episode of Art of the Cut, Steve sits down with Director Cate Shortland, and Editors Leigh Folsom Boyd, ACE, and Matthew Schmidt. Cate's most recent work before Black Widow includes films like Sommersault, Lore, and Berlin Syndrome, as well as a variety of TV series and mini-series. Leigh and Matthew have cut an impressive string of Marvel blockbusters, including Spider-Man Far From Home, Ant-man, Avengers: Endgame, Captain America: Civil War, and many others. So it's not surprise this talented team was selected to spin the web for one of the MCU's most anticipated backstories. This week we discuss the films of acclaimed Australian filmmaker Cate Shortland. The first is Somersault (2004), a coming-of-age drama starring Abbie Cornish and Sam Worthington. The film, set in the Australian ski resort of Jindabyne, is a beautifully shot, powerful insight into the life of an emotionally troubled young runaway and the men who she interacts with. The second is Lore (2012), a drama set in the final days of WW2. A young girl, and Hitler youth member, must take her siblings on a long journey across Germany aided by a young Jewish man. The film is based on Rachel Seiffert's 2001 novel The Dark Room. The final film is Berlin Syndrome (2017), a psychological horror/thriller set in the German capital. An Australian backpacker falls victim to an English teacher who imprisons her in his flat. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Melanie Joosten.

In this episode Shade and Lily Bongwater swap one night stand stories…Shade shares an endeavor where she threw down with a good looking Berlin Syndrome fan and finds out (like we all do), too late that pretty means “pretty crazy”. Not to be left out or outdone, teddy bears are thrown into the mix and what else would they want to be tipped with anyway? Voo Doo dolls, gold bricks, and chocolate. Easy enough. Shade reveals her dessert weakness… And back to the man of the hour…Houdini who came to down to play with Bongwater…twice. The carnival leaves…but returns for repeat business- time. Quiz time means only one thing, disappointment in the bedroom for the vanilla readers who think foreplay is x-rated behavior. Shade offers some life advice. Cosmo tells the ladies how to celebrate a man’s birthday…and they are unimpressed. Lack luster. So they submit their own ideas as to how they would impress their partner sexually for their birthday cake. Dick cleanliness and emotional barriers. EPISODE 026 THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, DEADPOOL, BERLIN SYNDROME This week's show has a very different vibe compared to last week's laughter and cough fest. Maybe Dave and Dwayne take their film reviewing career more seriously than Russ and Chris, maybe not. This episode has a real mixed bag of reviews. We have everything from a late 80's war movie to a modern thriller. We even have time to throw in a historical drama that ignites a furious disagreement between Moid and Dwayne. Moid won the argument by default after Dwayne resorted to name calling which Moid edited out later. BEEN FLICKED 12:00 CASUALTIES OF WAR (1989) Dave reviews this almost forgotten Vietnam movie starring Michael J Fox and Sean Penn. Dave is a self proclaimed Brian De Palma fan, will this live up to his expectations? 28:55 THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST (2004) Always near the front of the queue when it comes to provocation and controversy (well, not really, he only watched a film) Moid reviews the Mel Gibson directed phenomenon, The Passion of the Christ. Was it worth the hype? Is it actually any good? What's Mel Gibson's problem? 44:48 BERLIN SYNDROME (2017) Dwayne has been making the most of his Netflix subscription and actually watched a film since he was last on the show. 53:50 DEADPOOL (2016) You read that right. We wouldn't normally review a film that everybody has seen and nobody wants to hear about but we didn't have the heart to stop Dave. He was so proud to have watched a superhero film we let him have his 10 minutes of fun. 1:00:40 QUESTION TIME This weeks question is from our spiritual second home, San Francisco. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. We are already four percent into 2018 and some good films have come out. But last year was a heck of a year too. Dark Discussions puts together their review of all that was good and bad in 2017. Included is the consideration of 75 different films that were worthy enough to be considered as a top 20 film for genre and horror films. Each of your five co-hosts put together a list of movies they thought were good enough to be seen by audiences. This included both a list of horror films and a list of other speculative fiction films. Afterwards we then combined them and came up with Dark Discussions definitive lists of the best of 2017. Some obvious films like Wonder Woman and Get Out appear but also little known films like The Evil Within, Radius, and Berlin Syndrome were considered. Also included are some of our listener choices and what they felt were the best of the year. And don’t forget our top and worst scenes, scream queens, breakout star, and anything else you can think of. Dark Discussions wraps up last year in a nice tight bow and gives their listeners a good many films to go out and search for. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM
Actor Teresa Palmer looks back on her first years in Hollywood coming from Adelaide at only 19 years of age. She's had a lot of false starts that felt like one step forward, two steps back but now she's finally hitting her stride with roles in Mel Gibson's Oscar-nominated "Hacksaw Ridge" and "Berlin Syndrome". Jenny Cooney catches up with Teresa to talk about how all of the struggles helped shape her to be in the best place of her life; working on projects she loves, having the family she always wanted and squeezing in lots of side projects, with a little help from Jenny herself.

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Another “arthouse” horror film from Australia. Berlin Syndrome’s screenwriting, credited to Shaun Grant, has a similar feel to his Snowtown Murders. But also it is not much unlike the recent Hounds of Love. What they all have in common is horror based in the real world where the real monsters are people. Clare, a beautiful woman from Australia, takes a backpacking trip to Germany to photograph the unique architecture of old East Germany, specifically East Berlin. While walking the streets, she meets a handsome school teacher named Andi who shows her about the city. With a mutual attraction, the two later head to his flat and make passionate love; essentially a magnificent one night stand. But after Andi leaves for work, Clare unexpectedly gets locked in his apartment. The movie is directed by Australian filmmaker, Cate Shortland, from a minimalist screenplay by Shaun Grant (based off the novel by Melanie Joosten). The film stars Teresa Palmer in a career defining performance as Clare, and Sense8 actor Max Riemelt as Andi. Receiving rave reviews from critics, Dark Discussions takes a look at this recently released horror thriller. There is more than meets the eye with this week's podcast. By that, we mean there's a lot that we talk about. Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan review Ana Lily Amirpour's The Bad Batch starring Suki Waterhouse and a cannibal Jason Momoa. We talk about the weirdness of the film, its style over substance approach, and why sometimes just a cool aesthetic is not enough to sustain a film. Dylan also saw a lot over the week, including the entire first season of Glow, as well as Nobody Speak: Trials of the Free Press, and Berlin Syndrome. Meanwhile, both Chris and Dylan watched Shimmer Lake and Chris spent most of his week watching all the Transformers movies including Transformers: The Last Knight. That's a lot of stuff to talk about and still the podcast managed to be under 90 minutes! There's also our usual Blu-ray releases of the week, including our pick, Straw Dogs on Criterion. The news starts off with a showstopper by talking about a sequel to The Accountant being a thing, and we discuss the announcement of Ron Howard as the replacement for Lord and Miller on the Han Solo film. Really, there's a lot to talk about this week and we did our best to keep it nice and succinct because next week we're going to have plenty of new movies to dissect. We'll be reviewing Baby Driver for sure, but expect discussion of The Big Sick as well as probably some Beguiled and Okja talk.

Oh hey! Gay icon, horror masterwork, AACTA award winning film The Babadook finally gets its due with a maxed out, two hour long episode which discusses Jennifer Kent's film in all the depth it requires. The main discussion was recorded after the internet deemed the top hat wearing figure that is the Babadook was a gay icon, so unfortunately we don't touch on that too much - but, there is still a Ru Paul's Drag Race clip though. As if talking about The Babadook longer than its own running time wasn't enough, there's a very short bonus discussion about Cate Shortland's Berlin Syndrome. We return from our nice tourist break holiday, to discuss Cate Shortland's nightmarish tourist break kidnap thriller, 'Berlin Syndrome'. Scratching and gnawing at the lines between intimacy and captivity, Shortland's film can be as romantic as it is nerve-wracking, but it's always exhilarating at ever step of the way. Episode 64 of One Week Only! This week's key film is "Hermia & Helena," the new film by Argentinian director Matías Piñeiro. A playful comedy about relationships and personal change, it follows Camila, a playwright in Buenos Ares, as she moves to New York for an artistic residency to work on her Spanish translation of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream." A fun mix of romantic comedy and identity drama, with a healthy dose of Shakespearean wit & wisdom, it's a smart reinvention of a classic text for the modern era. (35:20) We also review the kidnapping thriller "Berlin Syndrome" starring Teresa Palmer, directed by Cate Shortland (6:35); the Israeli box-office hit "The Women's Balcony" directed by Emil Ben-Shimon (15:05); and the conceptual art film "Manifesto" starring Cate Blanchett in 13 unique roles, directed by Julian Rosefeldt (25:00). Hosted by Carlos Aguilar & Conor Holt. Music by Kevin MacLeod at www.incompetech.com
