L-Carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative that plays a crucial role in energy metabolism within the human body. It is synthesized in the liver and kidneys from the amino acids lysine and methionine. L-Carnitine is primarily involved in the transport of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria, the energy-producing organelles within cells, where they can be oxidized to generate ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the body's main energy currency. Here are some key aspects and functions of L-Carnitine: Energy production: L-Carnitine facilitates the transport of fatty acids into the mitochondria, enabling their breakdown and subsequent conversion into ATP. This process is essential for maintaining energy levels throughout the body. Fat metabolism: By aiding in the utilization of fatty acids as an energy source, L-Carnitine contributes to fat metabolism and can potentially support weight management and fat loss efforts. Exercise performance: L-Carnitine has been studied for its potential benefits in enhancing exercise performance. It may help improve endurance, reduce muscle damage, and enhance recovery by optimizing energy utilization during physical activity. Heart health: L-Carnitine plays a crucial role in maintaining cardiovascular health. It assists in the transport of fatty acids to the heart muscle, providing a valuable energy source. L-Carnitine supplementation has been studied for its potential benefits in various cardiac conditions, including heart failure and angina. Brain function: L-Carnitine is involved in maintaining healthy brain function. It can cross the blood-brain barrier and acts as a neuroprotective agent, potentially supporting cognitive health and neurological well-being. He strongly advocates for the principles that "food is medicine" and "exercise is medicine." Dr. Gillett highlights what he calls the "7 pillars of health": exercise, diet, sleep, stress management, social connections, exposure to sunlight, and spiritual wellness, believing these elements are more effective than any drug or supplement. Outside of his professional life, he loves spending time outdoors on his farm with his wife, their two sons, and their two wolfhounds. In this episode, Kyle and I discuss:What are peptides?Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF)Selective Androgen Receptor Modulator (SARM)Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)Who should be taking peptides?0:00 Coming up…0:52 Introduction2:07 Unexplained infertility11:40 L-CARNITINE increase TMAO?14:57 What are peptides?19:54 Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF)22:00 What are skin peptides?24:44 Selective Androgen Receptor Modulator (SARM)28:52 DHEA is the fountain of youth hormone38:24 Who should be taking peptides?44:27 EndingKyle's Links and Resources:Website: https://kylegillettmd.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kylegillettmd/X: https://twitter.com/gilletthealthLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kylegillettmd/Unlock the knowledge of trusted creators at: https://dexa.ai/Research report - Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) protects hippocampal cells from oxidative stress-induced damageThe Neuro Athletics Newsletter: https://bit.ly/3ewI5P0 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/louisanicola_/ Twitter : https://twitter.com/louisanicola_The Neuro Experience Podcast is proud to have hosted: Dr Layne Norton, Thomas DeLauer, Shawn Stevenson, Dr. Rocio Salas-Whalen, Saad Alam, Uma Naidoo, Dr. Lanna Cheuck,  Angela Lee Pucci, Jillian Turecki,  Dr. Jordan Feigenbaum, Dr. Darren Candow,  Dr. Sue Varma, Evy Poumpouras, Dr Casey Means, Renee Deehan, Dr Chris Palmer, Dr Charles Brenner. Introduction: Frustration with extreme weight loss approaches. Passion for healing metabolism for natural weight regulation. Introduction to Metabolic Endotoxemia (ME) and its link to gut health. Understanding Metabolic Endotoxemia (ME): ME linked to microbiome insult, impacting gut health. Factors include antibiotics, c-section, lack of breastfeeding, and low-fiber diet. Vicious cycle: Microbiome issues lead to low fiber, worsening diversity. Leaky gut allows lipopolysaccharides (LPS) to trigger systemic inflammation. Altered hunger signaling and reduced satiety hormones contribute to obesity. Impact of Endotoxemia: Metabolic syndrome features tied to ME: inflammation, insulin resistance, central fat storage, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Scientific Quotes on Endotoxemia: Gut dysbiosis induces oxidative stress and ME, major drivers of obesity. Oxidative stress key in developing complications of type 2 diabetes. Gut dysbiosis linked to chronic inflammation in coronary artery disease. Studies and Interventions: Diet High in Fiber, Polyphenols, and Functional Foods: Improved metabolic markers in type 2 diabetes subjects. Lowered blood sugar, cholesterol, triglycerides, and inflammation. Flaxseed Intervention: Lowered intestinal permeability and LPS in perimenopausal, overweight females. Pomegranate Extract: Reduced inflammation, improved gut bacteria, and lowered endotoxemia in overweight subjects with high cholesterol. Resistant Dextrin (Prebiotic): Lowered endotoxemia, improved sleep, quality of life, inflammation, and blood sugar in type 2 diabetes females. Probiotic (Lactobacillus Rosis GG): Improved inflammation, lowered endotoxemia, and enhanced metabolic outcomes in coronary artery disease subjects. Symbiotic Intervention (Probiotic + Prebiotic): Significant improvement in endotoxemia, inflammation, and metabolic markers in subjects with obesity. Practical Applications and Recommendations: Testing for endotoxemia using LPS antibodies. Dietary focus on high polyphenol, unrefined carbs, high-fiber, and nutrient-dense foods. Power foods include flax seeds, chia seeds, true fermented yogurt, and pomegranate extract. Individualized approach for gut dysbiosis, starting with digestive support. Conclusion: Emphasis on the gut-metabolism connection. Majority may have endotoxemia, a main driver of type 2 diabetes and obesity. Solutions involve optimizing gut health through diet, supplements, and personalized approaches. References used in this episode: 1.Medina-Vera I, Sanchez-Tapia M, Noriega-Lopez L, et al. Anders Varner on Instagram Doug Larson on Instagram Dan Garner on Instagram

Art of Manliness Key Takeaways  Low testosterone is often best treated if 1) you have symptoms and 2) have a testosterone level below 400Testosterone levels can vary depending on the quality of your recent sleep and diet Symptoms of low testosterone: depression, anxiety, low libido, erectile dysfunction, low sperm productionPeople who are significantly hypogonadal for a long time are at a much higher risk for osteoporosis, neurodegenerative disease, cardiovascular disease, and others Metabolic syndrome is the most common cause of low testosteroneObstructive sleep apnea is the second most common cause of low TFor most men, an optimal testosterone number is between 500 and as high as you can go naturallyHow to improve T: get better and more sleep, improve your diet, manage stress, drink less alcohol, etc. Improving these behaviors will make you more insulin sensitive (which is a good thing) Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is an option when the benefits of increasing T outweigh the risks of remaining at low levels of T, and when the patient understands the risks and the benefits of the therapySupplements mentioned by Dr. Kelly Gillett for testosterone optimization:Creatine,L-Carnitine, Calcium D-Glucarate, andTongkat Ali Read the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgWhen men think about optimizing their hormones, they tend only to think about raising their testosterone. But while increasing T can be important, an ideal health profile also means having testosterone that's in balance with your other hormones as well.Today on the show, Dr. Kyle Gillett joins me to discuss both of those prongs of all-around hormone optimization. We start with a quick overview of the different hormones that affect male health. We then get into what qualifies as low testosterone and how to accurately test yours. We also discuss what causes low testosterone in individual men, and how its decline in the general male population may be linked to both birth control and the world wars. In the second half of our conversation, we discuss how to both raise testosterone and get rid of excess estrogen, including the use of some effective supplements you may never have heard of. We then get into the risks and benefits of taking TRT, before ending our discussion with what young men can do to prepare for a lifetime of optimal T and hormonal health.Resources Related to the PodcastAoM series on testosterone, including How I Doubled My Testosterone Levels NaturallyAoM Podcast #761: How Testosterone Makes Men, MenAoM Podcast #878: The Fitness Supplements That Actually Work Connect With Dr. Kyle GillettKyle on IGGillett Health Podcast on Spotify and AppleGillett Health on YouTubeGillett Health website

Huberman Lab Podcast Notes Key Takeaways “Behavioral tools form the foundational layer of all tools for mental health, physical health, and performance. Second to that, the next layer is nutrition. No amount of supplementation or non-prescription or prescription compounds can ever compensate for poor nutrition.” – Dr. Andrew HubermanNutrition is fundamentally important for obtaining basic nutrients, micro-, and macronutrients – supplements should be used to augment or support behavioral tools and nutritionGeneral approach to vitamin & mineral supplements: (1) is the cost within the range you can afford and want to pay; (2) are you able to cover needs just from food (you want most food to come from minimally or non-processed foods)Three questions to ask yourself before starting supplementation: (1) how's your sleep? (2) how's your nutrition? (3) what's your budget?Unless you are supplementing for foundational support (vitamins, minerals, foundational compounds, adaptogens, probiotics, prebiotics), focus on single-ingredient formulated supplements for the most power and control overdoseDon't try everything at once when trying to address a specific problem! Instead, try one supplement for one week (without varying anything else) than the other to see which works best for you – then see how well the combination worksImportant note for women seeking fertility and hormone support: depending on the phase of your menstrual cycle, supplements will impact you differently since hormones are naturally fluctuating – it's critical (for everyone, not just women) to take single-ingredient supplements so you can dose accordinglyIf the budget is around $100 per month: don't focus on trying to improve one specific area or category; instead, focus on buffering and enhancing foundational nutrition, adaptogens, probiotics, prebiotics, and digestive enzymes – check out Athletic greensRead the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgIn this episode, I explain how to design a supplementation protocol to support maximum mental and physical health and performance depending on your specific needs, nutrition, lifestyle and finances. When most people hear about “supplements,” they think they are vitamin supplements, but there are many compounds that are powerful and sold over-the-counter that can enhance our health in performance and that can't be obtained from foods. First, I discuss “foundational” supplements to support overall health, including water and fat-soluble vitamins, minerals, digestive enzymes, adaptogens, and prebiotics/probiotics. Then I explain how to use single-ingredient supplements to enhance specific aspects of your physiology, such as aiding sleep, cognitive enhancement, and focus supporting healthy hormone levels (e.g., testosterone, estrogen and growth hormone, thyroid). Finally, I explain when it makes sense to add supplements to your lifestyle and discuss how best to use supplements, including how to determine dosage, sourcing, continuous schedules and cycling, and how to layer different supplements most effectively. This episode will explain how to design the safest, most biologically effective, cost-effective supplementation protocol to meet your particular goals and support your overall health, including vitality and longevity.
