Genesis 19:1-29The two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and bowed himself with his face to the earth and said, “My lords, please turn aside to your servant's house and spend the night and wash your feet. Then you may rise up early and go on your way.” They said, “No; we will spend the night in the town square.” But he pressed them strongly; so they turned aside to him and entered his house. And he made them a feast and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the last man, surrounded the house. And they called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them.” Lot went out to the men at the entrance, shut the door after him, and said, “I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly. Behold, I have two daughters who have not known any man. Let me bring them out to you, and do to them as you please. Only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shelter of my roof.” But they said, “Stand back!” And they said, “This fellow came to sojourn, and he has become the judge! Now we will deal worse with you than with them.” Then they pressed hard against the man Lot, and drew near to break the door down. But the men reached out their hands and brought Lot into the house with them and shut the door. And they struck with blindness the men who were at the entrance of the house, both small and great, so that they wore themselves out groping for the door.Then the men said to Lot, “Have you anyone else here? Sons-in-law, sons, daughters, or anyone you have in the city, bring them out of the place. For we are about to destroy this place, because the outcry against its people has become great before the Lord, and the Lord has sent us to destroy it.” So Lot went out and said to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, “Up! Genesis 8:1 But God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the livestock that were with him in the ark. God remembers His creation “for good” (Nehemiah 13:31). When God “remembers” someone, He has some blessing prepared for them. Ten generations after Noah, “God remembered Abraham and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow” of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19:29). A couple generations later, “God remembered Rachel … and opened her womb” (Genesis 30:22). When God sent Moses to Egypt to deliver Israel, it was because “God remembered His covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob” (Exodus 2:24). God remembered Hannah, and she conceived and bore Samuel (1 Samuel 1:19-20). When God remembers His people, the blessings flow freely. Amen.

God's decisions of justice are righteous because he is righteous.

Have you ever wondered how many people we have caused to miss heaven? Right when the kingdom was there for the taking, we suddenly do something completely contrary to the will of God or the leaning of the holy spirit. Those moments when God places something on our heart, but we choose to do the opposite, because it gives us personal satisfaction, but leaves the intended recipient at a loss. We must be aware that the harvest is not always at our convenience, in fact it occurs often, when we have conflicting plans. Collateral damage occurs when we as Christians turn a positive opportunity into a life hindering memory, while oblivious, the recipient of that hurt bears it for a lifetime. Will it cause us to lose our salvation, most likely “no,” but what will Jesus inquire of us, when he asks “why”? Why did you hurt the most vulnerable of his sheep, those that are broken and suffering heartache, when at the moment of their calling, we do something so contrary and detrimental that the hope and the courage they gained immediately and suddenly vanishes? Truly, the whole of humanity has suffered collateral damage from the beginning, it is not a new phenomenon, the Bible is full of such, to serve as a reminder to us; Adam's sin when he ate of the fruit, and when asked rather than accept responsibility he blamed both God and Eve (Genesis 3:12); And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. Abel's murder at the hand of Cain his brother (Genesis 4:10); And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.Abraham having to put away his first son Ismael (Genesis 21:11); 11 The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son. 12 But God said to him, “Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned. Lot's wife fleeing the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19:26); But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. This is Dr. MaryAnn Diorio, novelist and life coach, welcoming you to another episode of Winning with the Word. Today is Monday, September 27, 2021, and this is Episode #34 of Series 2021. This episode is titled “Is Hell Real?" _______________________________ Mention the topic of Hell these days and you will get a variety of interesting reactions. Some that I've gotten personally are the following: __I don't believe in Hell.  __A good and loving God would not send people to Hell. __I don't care if I go to Hell. My friends will be there, and we'll have a big party. __The concept of Hell is a crutch to control people. __Hell is real, and I don't want to go there. Perhaps you, too, have heard some or all of these statements about Hell. Let's look at them one by one. 1.__I don't believe in Hell. Just because a person says he doesn't believe in Hell doesn't mean that Hell does not exist. Whether something is true or not does not depend on what we believe. It depends on an absolute standard of truth established by God. God alone is capable of establishing what is true or not. We are not God. For example, you could say, "I don't believe in sound frequencies." But just because you don't believe in sound frequencies doesn't mean they don't exist. Or, you could say, "I don't believe in gravity." Well, try jumping off a roof and see where that belief takes you. 2.__A good and loving God would not send people to Hell. If you believe this, then you haven't read the Bible. The Bible includes several examples in which God executes mass killings of people in punishment for their sin. Here are a few: __The Great Flood (Genesis 6; Genesis 7; Genesis 8); __The destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 18; Genesis19); __The killing of Egypt's firstborn sons (Exodus 11; Exodus 12); __The killing of the Canaanites under Moses and Joshua (Numbers 21; Deuteronomy 20; Joshua 6); __The mass murder of the Amalekites by King Saul (1 Samuel 15). Those who don't recognize the justice side of God do not know God. He is not only the God of mercy; He is also the God of justice who will punish sin. The only way to avoid that punishment is to accept Jesus Christ as one's Savior. Jesus took the punishment for the sin of every human being, but unless a person repents of his sin and trusts in Jesus to save him, that person will eventually be punished. And the punishment will be in Hell. 3.__I don't care if I go to Hell. My friends will be there, and we'll have a big party. Wrong! There will be no partying in Hell, I can assure you. On the contrary, people in Hell exist in unending torment of spirit, soul, and body, isolated from God and from one another. There are no relationships in Hell, only abject despair. The Book of Revelation, chapter 19, verse 20, describes Hell as a "lake of fire burning with brimstone."  This past week, you may have watched footage of the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands. Did you ever consider that the fire and lava we see erupting from volcanoes could be coming from Hell?

God returns for a visit with Abraham and confirms the birth of Isaac and strengthens the faith of Sarah. But, also while He is there, He reveals to Abraham the impending judgment upon Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham intercedes for them (namely his nephew Lot) and we learn some wonderful things about God's nature. After Abraham intercedes for Sodom and Gomorrah (namely his nephew Lot), the angels of God go down to Sodom and are only able to rescue a small portion of his family. Sodom and Gomorrah are destroyed and Lot's family is rescued. However, although Lot and his family have been taken out of Sodom, Sodom was still in Lot's family. Sermon series: Father Abraham | Passage: Genesis 18-19

We're moving on in the life of Abraham and take a moment in Week 8 of the Genesis Journal to read the story of Sodom & Gomorrah through chapters 18 and 19 in Genesis. In this grim story, what can we learn about our relationship with Jesus? What are the tangible takeaways as Christians today?

Revelation 14:6-13 Series: Just Conquer #40 INTRODUCTION I've read too many British novelists, including Lewis and Tolkien, not to come across the word draught. It's apparently not an American English word; we use "draft.” They are pronounced the same, but, to me, draft doesn't seem quite the same. Though it has a number of meanings, for now, think of draught as a portion of drink, a gulp or swallow of a long and thirst-quenching drink, typically of some sort of adult beverage (or elvish). You sip tea, you down a draught of beer. In the middle part of Revelation 14 three angels announce a draught of doom and identify those who will drink a draught of God's wrath. God's anger is likened to wine that will be drunk and will cause disaster for them. The hour of His judgment has come upon those who have made the wrong worship choices, and their torment is just getting started. Satan (in chapter 12) has thrown himself against the Lord's anointed and any who follow the Lamb. The antichrist (in chapter 13) embodies the jealousies of Satan and sets himself up as a poser king over the nations. The false prophet leads the earth in worshipping an image of the false messiah. The lies are heavy and great pressure is applied so that all will take the beast's mark. None can resist in quiet. Worship the beast or lose your life. At the beginning of chapter 14 we see a remnant of God's people who do not bow to the beast, many of whom appear to pay the ultimate (earthly) price for it. They have the name of the Father and of the Lamb on their foreheads, and they will not defile themselves in fornication or in falsehood. Now, though, we begin to see what the future holds for the earth-dwellers. It is not good. I have preached around 460 sermons at TEC. Most of those sermons have tracked sequentially through a book of the Bible. We've finished John and Genesis, 1 Corinthians and some other quicker studies through shorter epistles. We're more than halfway through Revelation, and I don't remember ever working through a paragraph on hell, on the lake of fire, that is as explicit as this paragraph about eternal judgment. There have been sermons on Sodom and Gomorrah, and we've studied Psalms with judgment on rebels, but this is an unmistakable, and awful passage about God's everlasting punishment on sinners. There is even more to come in the Apocalypse. Hell is an almost unbearable subject, and who can imagine how triggering it is to today's average college graduate. Psychologically, as in, down in our psuchos/souls, our consciences accuse us and that torment is an prelude of the physical and mental torment coming on those who will not give glory to God. This is a terrible reality that points to the terrible offense of our sin, and it would be a good opportunity for parents to talk to their kids about it further. Most of the time we talk about adorning the doctrine of God so that it is appealing, especially to our kids. We emphasize that the Lord blesses obedience, and we will see that in this passage as well. But it is good to learn, or to be reminded, that every life on earth will come to an end, and that who we've worshipped has eternal consequences, in ceaseless song or the ceaseless smoke of torment. In verses 6-13 there are four voices making four announcements. ANNOUNCEMENT ONE: FEAR GOD (verses 6-7) As usual John "saw" another vision and he sees “another angel flying directly overhead.” The last angel John mentioned was Michael who threw Satan out of heaven (12:7), but the last similar flying announcer was an eagle proclaiming a trifecta of woes (8:13). This angel carries “an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on the earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people.” Is this a saving gospel? There is no mention of Jesus or the cross, rather an appeal to their consciences as recognizing a Creator. This is part of what makes it "eternal," since it is about the eternal God, and it has eternal consequences. Beast-image worship belongs to a temporary mob. All those worldly worshippers are enslaved by the comforts and consensus (even the comfort of consensus itself) of the beast culture. This gospel ups their accountability. The angel's message is, “Fear God and give him glory because the hour of his judgment has come, and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water.” We could call this creation theology, or natural theology. Honoring God is exactly what men refuse to do. The truth that He deserves honor is the truth they suppress (Romans 1:18-22). "The hour of his judgment has come," so this is the last call, the final warning to fear the Lord. It's one of the reasons that points to a future "hour," because this sort of "hour" is not cyclical. ANNOUNCEMENT TWO: BABYLON HAS FALLEN (verse 8) The second announcement is made by a second angel, and it also portrays the end. “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great.” Proclaimed as if it is completed, the system propped up by the beasts will not last. Count on it. The beast's kingdom is called "Babylon." The original Babylonians lived in luxury and dominated as a world empire. They loved themselves and took God's people captive. Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon in Daniel's day, played at being god, and he was judged. king [Nebuchadnezzar] answered and said, “Is not this great Babylon, which I have built by my mighty power as a royal residence and for the glory of my majesty?” (Daniel 4:30) Rome had earned herself the nickname as a modern Babylon. Whether or not the future kingdom is centered in a renewed city along the Euphrates River or if the future kingdom can be represented as a new Babylon, the quote in Isaiah applies: ““Fallen, fallen is Babylon” (Isaiah 21:9). This Babylon has “made all nations drink the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality.” She seduced the peoples as by giving them strong wine, enticing them to drink their fill. Later in Revelation Babylon is called a prostitute (chapter 17), and she has captivated the world. It's not right to take this as a symbol of Jerusalem, and it's not sufficient to call Babylon the papacy, at least not of the 16th century. Is "sexual immorality" their physical practice or a spiritual picture? It could be both. We are talking about nations, the wine and the sex are likely metaphors. And also, the relationships among and between the people are wicked. Babylon has set the tone and intoxicated the whole earth and made the nations mad (Jeremiah 51:7-8). ANNOUNCEMENT THREE: DRAUGHT JUDGMENT (verses 9-12) A third angel “followed” them, so all of these proclamations belong together. This angel exposes the real dangers of the beast and taking the beast's mark. In chapter 13 “If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand” he can buy and sell. Refusal to worship the beast warrants the death penalty. The death penalty is better. In chapter 14 the one who takes the beast's mark will drink the wine of God's wrath. The one who drinks wine (of immorality) will get more wine (of judgment). The first cup tasted smooth, this cup leads to disaster. The first made men smashed, the second wakes them up. God's wine is “poured full strength” or “mixed in full strength” (NAS). It could be translated "mixed and unmixed/undiluted." Wine could be enhanced with spices, it could also be watered down. This wine is concentrated, undiluted and doctored with strengthening agents. It is poured into the cup of God's anger. For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup
 with foaming wine, well mixed,
and he pours out from it,
 and all the wicked of the earth
 shall drain it down to the dregs. 
(Psalm 75:8) The analogy changes in the second half of verse 10: “he will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night.” Fire and brimstone/sulfur, are images that remind us of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19), but His hour of judgment is not just one hour of burning. Jesus said it was better to cut off your hands than to go to hell where the fire is never quenched (Mark 9:33). The “torment” appears to be both physical and mental. This is not annihilation, it is not to be lifeless, but rather to know conscious pain, with no stop, no rest. Ceasing would be a sort of rest, a pause in the pain or forgetting conviction. This is being alert to one's numbness to God's glory in a way that harasses and distresses. Like a boat caught in a storm of waves, so sinners are caught in unrelenting suffering. The duration is forever and ever (“unto the ages of ages”), day and night. This is eternal destruction. While the point in chapter 14 is to remind the saints to endure temporary troubles, the judgment will come to all who fall short of the glory of God. It is a just penalty. Verse 12 does not move us from the third announcement, but it does encourage the saints once again to endure. “Here is a call for the endurance of the saints.” Keep keeping on. Keep obeying whenever the obedience is called for. Hold fast the faith and follow Jesus as the Lamb. ANNOUNCEMENT FOUR: BLESSED INDEED (verse 13) The voice in verse 13 is not an angel. It is “a voice from heaven,” and followed up by "the Spirit." This promise comes from God Himself, unmediated. The voice tells John to write “Blessed. The Spirit agrees, "Yes" or “Indeed.” The favored are not abandoned by God even in their death, which is an argument from the greater to the lesser. Death is not the worst, by far. The “from now on” emphasizes those who die as Christians, they are “in the Lord.” They are untied with the Lamb, and cannot be separated from Him. He rules over all spheres, and we are to live in His sphere. The Spirit speaks explicitly two times in Revelation: when He says "Come" in chapter 22 and here. The Spirit seals believers and He strengthens them for love and good deeds. He brings about the obedience of faith and blessing. Believers will “rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them.” The "rest" doesn't mean inactivity as much as it means no longer working amidst unresolved conflict. The deeds following refers to rewards. We're saved by faith, and our labors in faith are not in vain. Remember Paul's exhortation to take care how one builds, as each one's work will become manifest in “the Day.” If our work by God's grace is not burned up, we will receive a reward (1 Corinthians 3:10-15). Pay attention to the ends. Take heed of true torment and true rest, of His judgment and His blessing. CONCLUSION Those who suppress the truth in unrighteousness and ungodliness are threatened with eternal, conscious suffering. They go along with the crowd, and the way is wide that leads to destruction. The glory of God and the warning of hell prove the deceitfulness of sin and how hard-hearted/blind it makes the nations. One reason why this passage points to a future fulfillment is because today, the call to repentance is mixed with many graces. What a contrast. The beast offers no gospel, the Lamb offers eternal blessing and rest. “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” ---- Charge: I don't know who needs to hear this, but thanks be to God who gives us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. You are what you are by the grace of God, so work harder than others, and remember that it is not you but God who is with you. You may be surprised at what it takes to be steadfast, but you will not be surprised when God accepts your deeds done in faith and says, Blessed! Benediction: But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. (1 Corinthians 15:57–58, ESV)

Revelation 9:13-21 Series: Just Conquer #28 # Introduction The information age in an election year is apparently like a 24-hour truck-stop kitchen, something is always getting dropped in the fat. Some of the information/data torrent is worthwhile, and I've tried to sift and skim and sort through a lot over the last few months, as have many of you. For a few months I got out of my regular reading routine, but a while ago I realized that I needed to add some fruits and fiction back into my diet because consuming so much fried covid was giving me indigestion. Based on the strong recommendation of Glenn, I started an 1883 story by George MacDonald called, _The Princess and Curdie_. I'm only about halfway through it so far, and just tasted for myself the meat that Glenn had teased in front of me. But I've enjoyed it, and I wonder if Andrew Peterson didn't get some of his ideas for the Wingfeather Saga from it. Anyway, there's a part that pictures a reality among mankind that has been sped up among us these past months, and a part that will be even more dramatic in the final days. > all men, if they do not take care, go down the hill to the animals' country; that many men are actually, all their lives, going to be beasts. … They do not know it of course; for a beast does not know that he is a beast, and the nearer a man gets to being a beast the less he knows it. … To such a person there is in general no insult like the truth. He cannot endure it, not because he is growing a beast, but because he is ceasing to be a man. Men are turning into what they will be. Some are turning into *beasts*, and one of the symptoms that cannot be separated is that the more beastly a man becomes, the less aware and sensitive he is to being a beast. Most jerks aren't lying about being oblivious to their impact on others, the oblivion is part of the Platonic ideal of jerkness. Sin causes sinners to be satisfied in their sin. Sin causes sinners to be surprised at the idea that their sin could be their problem. Sin, which destroys them, is their “precious.” Like a fool ground in a mortar with a pestle (Proverbs 27:22), the folly won't be squeezed out no matter how hard you press. In the sixth trumpet judgment, a multitude of demonic death-dealers come to earth and the ones who don't die conclude: *This is fine.* They won't quit their love of other gods, they won't quit doing what is gutting their souls. It is part of the second *woe*, worse than the first, and *not* fine. Similar to the locusts straight from the pit in Revelation 9:1-12, we read John's announcement of judgment, a description of those who cause the destruction, and a summary of the response. # The Moment of Release (verses 13-16) For the first time, the angel who blows the trumpet initiates further action for himself. > 13 Then the sixth angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” The **voice from the ... golden altar** is probably the angel we met at the altar in chapter 8 who presented the prayers of the saints to God (8:3-5). The **four horns** or knobs symbolize strength, like the horns or antlers on a fighting animal. So one angel blows the trumpet, and the altar angel commissions the horn-blowing angel. **”Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.”** The number of angels is similar to chapter 7 and the four angels who hold back the winds of destruction, though those angels were at the four corners of the earth. Similar to earlier in chapter 9, havoc is released, though the Euphrates River is not a gateway to the abyss. These four angels and the army that follows them are not known in other apocalyptic literature, but they are known to God. That they are **bound** indicates that they are not good. Good angels are never described that way in the Bible, though these will be doing God's work, as we'll see in verse 15. As for the **river Euphrates**, it would bring to mind the boundaries of Abram's promised property (Genesis 15:18), and later the eastern edge of the Roman Empire. Great enemies were just on the other side, whether Babylonians or Assyrians or Parthians; there was a history of being anxious associated with the Euphrates. The Euphrates is also a part of the sixth bowl judgment (Revelation 16:12), the river crossed by kings from the east for the last war. Verse 15 tells us about the time for and purpose of these four angels. > 15 So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour, the day, the month, and the year, were released to kill a third of mankind. Imagine waiting six-thousand, or eight-thousand, or seventeen-thousand years of earth time to finally get your call to action. Imagine being on lockdown, being stuck in the basement until the exact moment for your part in the script. After all this time, now is the time. It's *always* true that seconds tick according to God's sovereign timeline, but such specificity prepares us for the part these angels play on the global stage. They have one job to do: **released to kill a third of mankind**. These are the chosen angels of death, chosen for this time, though God also chooses the limits of their massacre. The pale horse, and his rider Death, with Hades behind him, were given authority to kill a quarter of mankind in the fourth seal (Revelation 6:8). Without any explicit transition, verse 16 connects the four angels with an army. > 16 The number of mounted troops was twice ten thousand times ten thousand; I heard their number. Verses 17-19 will describe their appearance, but here their number is key. **Twice ten thousand times ten thousand** is 200,000,000. According to the Worldometer site, Russia has almost 146 million people. It seems like a crazy high number, even impossible. But it is not the myriads of myriads that “no man could number” (7:9). These could be numbered, even if John got his information from someone else, since he **heard their number**. # The Horde of Hellish-Horses (verses 17-19) This is no ordinary army rushing into the scene. > 17 And this is how I saw the horses in my vision and those who rode them: they wore breastplates the color of fire and of sapphire and of sulfur, and the heads of the horses were like lions' heads, and fire and smoke and sulfur came out of their mouths. This is what John **saw**: horses and riders, though the riders do not do much other than provide color. They are wearing breastplates of red and yellow and blue, or “of fire and of hyacinth and of brimstone” (NAS), and all together they would look like an army of fire. The horses had heads that were **like lions' heads**, larger and more ferocious than a warhorse's head. And **fire and smoke and sulfur came out of their mouths.** I forgot to mention last week that some modern commentators wonder if the locusts are helicopters. Ha. The same type of interpreter would see cannons and tanks and rockets here, with explosions in the “mouths” of the weapons. That is fanciful, and wrong. It fits with the military image, but it does not fit with the scene as John describes it. > 18 By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed, by the fire and smoke and sulfur coming out of their mouths. The three elements are repeated, and they are called **plagues**. It reminds us of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19) with the same fire and smoke and sulfur. Also repeated is the effect, that a full third of mankind were killed. Verse 19 is curious. > 19 For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails, for their tails are like serpents with heads, and by means of them they wound. We've already seen their mouths, now it's added that they have wounding tails, tails that are **like serpents with heads**. The locusts had tails to torment, and these horses' tails **wound**, whether or not these wounds lead to death, or strike others that won't die. What is this about? I mean, it could be Parthian cavalry shooting arrows behind them. The imagery is physical and perhaps spiritual. The bound angels and their fire-breathing horse-horde are demonic, and demons love to deceive (Jesus likens demons to serpents and scorpions in Luke 17:17-19). Serpents and snakes especially have a lying history, starting with *the* Serpent, and based on John's summary in verses 20-21, death and deception are left in their trail. # Unrepentant and Undeterred (verses 20-21) As the venerable theologians of D.C. Talk once said, some people gotta learn the hard way. But we really do underestimate how hard it is to learn anything. Post-enlightenment progress in science and medicine and technology lull us into a belief that knowledge is the answer. We might not have the knowledge, but we believe it is out there, and that we could Google it if we really needed it. We like to say that those who don't study history are bound to repeat it, and sure, that is visible, but not obvious. Even pain, by itself, is not a neutral teacher. Pain is not a teacher at all, pain can be used by God in His grace to teach us, but pain also can be used by God to make a man more of the beast he's becoming. The Bible, in Proverbs, talks about sweetness of speech being persuasive and winsome. The Bible, as in Paul, writes at times with sarcastic and bite to shake the self-righteous and complacent. The Bible uses logic, poetic harmony, clear laws, and enough history to show the patterns of blessing and cursing. *But without God's grace and Spirit no one can see it.* Revelation 9 is an argument from the greater to the lesser: if a 200 million horde of hell-horses that kill billions of people do not cause the survivors to rethink their course, don't put too much pressure on your ability to win a comment war on Facebook. You get how obvious it is, and you should. So sow your truth seeds. But do not be surprised when the seeds fall on the rock of Mt. Rushmore and bounce off and drift away and are lost in a society as welcome as the frozen winter fields of South Dakota. Twice John says, **they … did not repent**. It could be said more strongly, “they *refused* to repent.” Even in these descriptions the futility and ruin is built in, but their eyes are made of bone. The world is burning and their own beliefs and behavior are vain. They are fully deluded. “It is fine.” > 20 The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands nor give up worshiping demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk, They made their own gods. Think about that. Behind those gods are demons, the type who destroy and kill. The materials have no life, and, as is the constant theme in Scripture, you become like who or what you worship. > 21 nor did they repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts. Three out of four are explicitly prohibited in the 10 Commandments. As for **murder**, they will call it healthcare (as with abortion) and justice (as in riots). As for **sorceries**, which more specifically refers to potions or drugs (and those who use them are included by Paul among the works of the flesh, Galatians 5:20) or essential oils, or **sexual immorality** in one night stands and throuples and trans-lives parades, or stealing $980 from the gas station store or legislative socialism and wealth redistribution, they will still say, it is fine. # Conclusion When we see preludes of this level of apocalyptic unrepentant population, don't lose heart. First, as Christians, you cannot be lost, you will conquer, by grace. Second, you cannot (and should not want to) stop God's plan, including when He lets men keep and celebrate the depravity that turns them more and more into beasts. And third, you do not need more than Jesus Christ and Him crucified (1 Corinthians 2:2). The gospel is the power of God to salvation (Romans 1:16). He grants repentance that leads to the knowledge of the truth (2 Timothy 2:25-26), so keep speaking truth. The gospel is *for* those who refuse to acknowledge God or give Him thanks. ---------- ## Charge Once you reach a certain age you realize that the most difficult part is not gaining weight. You see that a building, or significant parts of a city, can burn to the ground in hours. Our society has hit ludicrous speed in the hand-basket of God's abandoning wrath, like we've jumped off the top of the Washington Monument with one of the recently toppled statues tied to our backs. But God has prepared this time, as difficult as it is, and He has prepared you for it. He has delivered you from the world. He has given you the truth. Worship Him, obey Him, and you will be more than fine, you'll be blessed. ## Benediction: > We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. > And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. Little children, keep yourselves from idols. (1 John 5:19–21, ESV)

Genesis 18:1-15 & Matthew 9:35-10:23 & Romans 5:1-8 Abraham and Sarah...The Disciples...Paul and the churches in Rome...all believed in such a way that they were willing to be a source of love and grace for anyone and EVERYONE. Hospitality is an outward expression of our inward faith. The great leaders of our faith exercised extraordinary hospitality because they had faith in the possibility of the impossible through the power of God. Where Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19) failed to offer hospitality so completely, where Gibeah (Judges 19) failed in the exact same way...we see a different response from the faithful. What about the acceptance of the impossibility possibility leads to a life of faith which is expressed through loving hospitality?
