It's Tuesday, January 7th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Islam is the number one threat to Christians today International Christian Concern has issued their Global Persecution Index for 2024 — placing the countries of Nigeria,Niger, Sudan, Congo, Eritrea, Somalia, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and North Korea at the highest level “where Christians are regularly tortured and killed for their faith.” Each of these, except North Korea, is an Islamic country. As an ideology, Islam has replaced communism as the most serious threat to Christians in the world. Abortion is leading cause of death worldwide Referring to data from Worldometer, Breitbart News announced that abortion was the leading cause of deaths in 2024. A record of 45 million babies died at this count. That compares to 8.2 million people who died from cancer, 5 million from smoking, 1.7 million from HIV/AIDS, 1.35 million from traffic fatalities, and 1.1 million people died from suicide. Kamala Harris certifies Trump's presidential victory Here in the United States, the November presidential election results were certified by the U.S. Senate on Monday, reports NBC News. Ironically, Vice President Kamala Harris, the presidential loser, had the unenviable task as President of the Senate of certifying that her opponent, Donald Trump, won the election in a landslide. Trump is set to become the 47th President of the United States come January 20th. Notice that when she announces Trump's name the Republicans burst out in a cheer and a standing ovation. Not to be outdone, the Democrats applaud Kamala when she announces her electoral vote total. Listen. HARRIS: “The state of the vote for the president of the United States, as delivered to the President of the Senate, is as follows. The whole number of the electors appointed to vote for President of the United States is 538. Within that whole number, the majority is 270. “The votes for president of the United States are as follows: Donald J. Trump of the state of Florida, has received 312 votes. Kamala D. Harris…” (Republicans applaud) (Harris bangs the gavel twice) HARRIS: “Kamala D. Harris of the state of California has received 226 votes.” (Democrats applaud) Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigns After months of abysmal polling predicting a massive Conservative victory in the fall 2025 Canadian presidential election, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced yesterday that he intends to resign as Prime minister and leader of the Liberal Party, reports Reuters. TRUDEAU: “I intend to resign as party leader as prime minister after the party selects its next leader through a robust, nationwide competitive process. Last night, I asked the president of the Liberal Party to begin that process. This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I am having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election.” Trudeau, age 53, took office in November 2015 with a message of hope and "sunny ways" and won re-election twice, becoming one of Canada's longest-serving prime ministers and winning plaudits from liberals for his focus on gender parity policies. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, who is running for Prime Minister, offered this reaction. POILIEVRE: “Canadians desperate to turn the page on this dark chapter in our history might be relieved today that Justin Trudeau is finally leaving. But what has really changed? Every liberal [Member of Parliament] in power today and every potential liberal leadership contender, fighting for the top job, helped Justin Trudeau break the country over the last nine years. “All liberal politicians actively worked to pass into law the job-killing, inflationary carbon tax, a tax that Carbon Tax [Mark] Carney endorsed in his book. All supported a law quadrupling the tax over the next five years. All voted for or actively supported Trudeau's out-of-control spending, debt, and immigration. All passed Trudeau's housing policies that doubled the cost of homes. All liberal politicians helped pass catch-and-release bail and house arrest for the most rampant re-offenders, policies that increased violent crime 50%, gun crime 116%, and hate crime by 250%. “So, given that liberal [Members of Parliament] and leadership contenders unanimously supported everything Trudeau has done, why dump him now, right before an election? “Have they had a change of heart? Is it because they feel guilty that they doubled housing costs, hiked taxes, unleashed crime, broke immigration, forced a quarter of the population into poverty? No! They continued supporting Trudeau when he did all of those things. No, their only objection is that he is no longer popular enough to win an election and keep them in power.” Biden awards evolutionists, socialists and God-haters Evolutionists, socialists, and opponents of Christianity received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Joe Biden, as he prepared to leave office, reports USA Today. Jane Goodall and Bill Nye, the Evolutionist Guy, received the award. Also receiving the top citizen award included Hillary Clinton and George Soros, the man responsible for persecuting Christians and conservatives through Right Wing Watch and People for the American Way. Proverbs 28:4 reminds us that “Those who forsake the law praise the wicked, but such as keep the law contend with them.” Massive snow storm cancels 1,300 flights That massive snow storm across Kansas and eastern states, has closed down flights. In God's providence, over 1,300 flights were cancelled. Manhattan, Kansas was blanketed with 15 inches of snow, the second highest snowfall in history for the city. 6 states stockpile Abortion Kill Pills Some states are collecting bullets, or rather Abortion Kill Pills, to murder as many babies as possible. The Center for American Progress has announced that six states have stockpiled at least 2.25 million abortion pills in case the new Trump administration moves to restrict the distribution of these murderous devices. The six states are California, Oregon, Washington, New York, Massachusetts, and Maryland. TV viewership is down The cable news channels are languishing. Fox News Channel averaged 2.4 million viewers during primetime last year — compared to CNN's 685,000 and MSNBC's 1.5 million. The big three networks -- ABC, CBS, and NBC -- claimed 13 million viewers during primetime hours in 2024, representing an increase of about 10% from 2023, but down from 21 million viewers seven years ago. Golden Globes honors 2 movie flops on transgendering and rape And finally, The Golden Globes lavished their awards over the weekend -- this time upon a film centered around the theme of transgendering a male, reports the Associated Press. The R-rated movie “Emilia Perez” received four awards, but the film never played in American theaters —and only took in $9 million worldwide. That compares to the Kendrick Brothers' Christian film “The Forge” released last year — which earned over $40 million in worldwide box office receipts! Another unknown film “The Brutalist” took home three major awards, but barely made $1 million in the box office. The film lived up to its name with ample scenes of rape, nudity, vile language, homosexuality, and drug use. Indeed, in the words of 1 John 2:17, Hollywood and “the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Tuesday, January 7th, in the year of our Lord 2025. Those following the #DutchFarmerProtests on this podcast and elsewhere should be happy with the win of the pro-farmer BBB BoerBurgerBeweging (Farmer-Citizen Movement) won 15 Senate seats in their country's recent elections, giving them enough votes to block any further anti-farm legislation. March 16th, 2023 marked the third anniversary of 15 Days to Slow the Spread. A quick check or Worldometer shows a sharp decline in the number of Covid-19 cases and deaths in the US beginning in March of 22 and continuing on at a low level ever since. President Biden has not given up any of the emergency powers he appointed himself as part of a COVID-19 pandemic emergency. He says he'll declare the emergency over in May. In hindsight, he could have declared it over a year ago and been justified. With the Covid crisis all but over, and the Ukraine War fading into the background noise, we now have a banking crisis to contend with. President Biden, with the powers invested in him by well...him... Decided to make whole all the losses suffered by account holders in affected SVB and Signature Bank. SVB bank in particular, was heavily invested in the pursuit of a high ESG rating. A lot of money invested by SVB was going to causes favored by Democrats or to Democrats themselves. An article in USA Today takes pains to show that SVG donated to both Democrats and Republicans, it becomes clear that the lion's share went to Democrats. The President's pledge to make the account holders whole, even beyond the $250,000 covered by the FDIC, creates a moral hazard in that other banks teetering, will now feel like there is no downside to making risky investments the type that SVB did. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jp-mac/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jp-mac/support
It's Thursday, January 5th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark How Chinese Communists are co-opting Christianity The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom released a report on China last month. The Chinese Communist Party is continuing its five-year plan to sinicize major religions in the country, including Christianity. The report noted, “Official campaigns to sinicize religion have a disproportionally adverse impact on Christianity. … State-controlled religious organizations have been involved in altering, censoring, and controlling the content of Christian religious texts (such as the Bible) … doctrines, sermons, and hymns to ensure their alignment with the Chinese Communist Party's interpretation of religion.” Those who do not bow to such control face severe persecution. Abortion: Global leading cause of death Abortion was the leading cause of death last year, accounting for 40% of all deaths. Worldometer statistics report over 44 million unborn babies were killed by abortion in 2022. By comparison, an estimated 16 million people died from disease last year, 9.6 million from cancer, 6 million from smoking, and 2 million from HIV/AIDS. In the United States, there are an estimated 1,500 to 2,500 abortions per day. This means nearly 20% of all pregnancies in America (not including miscarriages) end in abortion. Psalm 106:37-38 says, “They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons; they poured out innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was polluted with blood.” Hungary's tax policies urges married couples to have kids In contrast, one country is seeking to support families. Hungary implemented a new tax policy this month that exempts mothers under the age of 30 from paying income tax. The tax exemption also applies to working adults under the age 25 and mothers with at least four children. The program offers financial support for buying seven-seater cars as well. Hungary has been enacting pro-family policies to encourage increased birthrates. GOP's McCarthy voted down time after time for House speaker House Republicans flailed through a long second day of fruitless balloting Wednesday, unable to either elect Kevin McCarthy as House speaker or come up with a new strategy to end the political chaos that has tarnished the start of their new majority, reports the Associated Press. Yet McCarthy wasn't giving up, even after the fourth, fifth and sixth ballots produced no better outcome. Twenty conservative holdouts still refuse to support him, leaving McCarthy far short of the 218 votes typically needed to win the gavel. Appearing on Fox News, Republican Congressman Chip Roy of Texas, one of the 20 conservatives opposing McCarthy, said this. ROY: “[McCarthy] has been in the leadership of Republicans since 2009. During that time, the debt has gone from 11 trillion to 32 trillion. In other words, we want to be able to have a check against The Swamp. This is about changing this town. Is anybody listening to this actually happy with what Congress is doing? Do you think Congress is doing a good job? The answer is ‘No.' So, why would we embrace the status quo? Why would we keep doing the same thing over and over again, that's what's happening in that room. “And this morning, a group of folks threatened some of us and they lost votes on that. Mike Rogers threatened to say he's going to kick those of us off of any committees who dared to challenge the coronation of the Speaker. And it was not received well by a lot of people in the room. Mike Rogers is emblematic of the problem. He is precisely why we ended up with bills like the $1.7 trillion monstrosity that was destroying our freedom. I'm not blinking!” House Speaker elections required multiple ballots 14 times Throughout American history, there have been 14 instances of Speaker elections requiring multiple ballots. Thirteen of 14 multiple-ballot elections occurred before the Civil War, when party divisions were more nebulous. The last time a Speaker election required two or more votes on the floor happened in 1923 with the election of Frederick Gillett, a Republican, from Massachusetts. Twitter previously suspended 250,000 accounts The latest batch of Twitter files show just how many accounts the social media company suspended on behalf of the U.S. government prior to Elon Musk taking over, reports CBN News. New Twitter owner Elon Musk tweeted, “US govt agency demanded suspension of 250K accounts, including journalists and Canadian officials!” Meanwhile, the Christian Post reports Twitter reinstated its account last Saturday. The Christian news group tweeted, “Our Twitter account has just been reinstated after a 9-month suspension because we correctly called Biden official Rachel Levine a man — and we refused to retract this truth.” 88% of Congressmen claim to be Christians Pew Research reports this year's 118th U.S. Congress remains untouched by two American demographic trends: the decline of Christianity and the rise of religious disaffiliation. Self-identified Christians have dropped to 63% of the population, and those who identify with no religion have increase to nearly 30% of the population. However, 88% of voting members of Congress say they are Christians, and only one member identifies as religiously unaffiliated. Since the 1960s, the Protestant makeup of Congress has dropped from 74% to 56%. Meanwhile, Roman Catholic identification has increased from 18% to 27%. Identification with other religions or no religion increased from 6% to 15%. Cardiac arrest of NFL player results in prayer on field And finally, NFL Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest during a game Monday against the Cincinnati Bengals that turned into a viral prayer meeting. The rest of the game was suspended. Hamlin, #3, had just stood up after being tackled before collapsing to the ground. Medics immediately performed CPR to restart his heart which lasted for nine minutes. At the same time, head coach Sean McDermott gathered with his team to pray over their teammate. An ambulance took Hamlin to the ICU where he remains in critical condition with signs of improvement. His uncle, Dorrian Glenn, told CNN that Hamlin remained sedated on a ventilator as doctors worked toward getting him to breathe on his own. ESPN commentator prayed spontaneously on air Across social media, players and fans alike offered prayers for Hamlin. A day after the game, ESPN's Dan Orlovsky prayed a spontaneous prayer for him on “NFL Live.” Listen. ORLOVSKY: “We just want to pray, truly come to You, and pray for strength for Damar, for healing for Damar, for comfort for Damar, to be with his family, to give them peace. If we didn't believe that prayer didn't work, we wouldn't ask this of You God. I believe in prayer. We believe in prayer. We lift up to Damar Hamlin's name in Your name, Amen.” ANOTHER ESPN COMMENTATOR: “Amen.” 1 Peter 5:6-7 says, “Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Thursday, January 5th in the year of our Lord 2023. According to Worldometer, there have been more than 1.1 million deaths in the U.S. due to COVID-19. The real question is- How many people have died from COVID vs. how many have died due to the hospital protocols instituted around the nation for the treatment of COVID-- Also, while people are hospitalized, what role does a healthcare power of attorney have-- What about hospitals that have denied treatment through drugs such as Ivermectin-- Can a hospital be ordered to allow a doctor to administer Ivermectin at the request of the family or the person acting as medical power of attorney----On January 17, Karen Mueller will be arguing before the Wisconsin Supreme Court in the case of Allen Gahl v. Aurora Health Care, Inc. Karen is the founder and general counsel for the Amos Center for Justice and Liberty.--Allen Gahl is the nephew of, and medical power of attorney for, John Zingsheim. John became the focus of this case in October of 2021. He was admitted to Aurora Summit Hospital in Waukesha County where he was diagnosed with COVID. He wanted to be given Ivermectin, so Allen began requesting that from the hospital, however, they refused. --In a two day conference hearing with lawyers, a judge decided that John had a right to get Ivermectin as long as it was an outside doctor that the family found that could be credentialed, enter the hospital, and administer the Ivermectin.--Before the order could be fulfilled, the appellate court intervened and stayed the order on the granting of the Ivermectin. --Karen then appealed to the Wisconsin Supreme Court on a bypass request. [Originally posted 03/37/2022] These are no doubt trying times. A relentless virus is plauging the world of humans. According to the website "Worldometer" the most recent death toll attributed to the covid 19 coronavirus is over 6 million people. Nope. Extreme weather caused by global climate changes is causing wildfires, earthquakes and floods all over the planet. In related news, no one has seen or heard from Waldo. Russia is reeking havoc, killing thousands of people and creating a new refugee crisis via an unprovoked war on their nieghbor, the sovereign nation of Ukraine. Imagine experiencing a 100-percent-efficient energetic Universe. Is such a cosmically comprehensive strategy a realizable provision? Pro-visions result in Universe wherever the minimum structural system mathematics is known and applied in some anticipatory solution referential to its eternally regenerative integrity. As we read Synergetics 987.031, what else is a mind to think? Or are we humans never expected to anticipate and wonder how in thought and deed such efficiency may result since it is referential to a differently formulated reality basis? The Synergetically inspired reality basis is differently conceived from anything and everything we have adapted to. Can it succeed? With the tetrahedron's topological constant relative abundance in conceptioning field that also is anticipatory reality's starting basis, where the six vectors equal zero, awareness of it provides a conceptual model that is not otherwise provided by the information we have learned to take for granted without actually thinking deeply about the origins of its premises, its philosophies, the authoritarian certainties that seem perpetually problematic, correlatively to distrusting more than trusting its emanated source as all indications of it are going on in the world. When it does not become more comprehensive as the political behavior demonstrates contradictory values of enormous costs and consequences into trillions and trillions of dollars involving hundreds of millions of people in this nation and more than one billion in China and more than one billion in India. The world population Worldometer reads: close to eight billion human beings, with the births increasing by the second from 7,924,489,100. Yet, who besides me today is reading Synergetics 987.031? This pericope opens with a directive from the Lord (Thus says the LORD) to Jeremiah who instructed him, saying, “Go and buy a potter's earthenware jar, and take some of the elders of the people and some of the senior priests” (Jer 19:1). God called His prophet to make a trip to the local potter's shop in order to purchase a pot. Jeremiah bought a specific kind of jar (בַּקְבֻּק baqbuq) that had a narrow neck and was used for pouring liquid. It's likely the name of the jar was an onomatopoeia, where the name sounded like the kind of noise it made as the liquid was being poured out. Apparently, Jeremiah's message was for the leadership of the city, as he was instructed to take some elders and senior priests along with him. The Lord instructed Jeremiah, saying, “Then go out to the valley of Ben-hinnom, which is by the entrance of the potsherd gate, and proclaim there the words that I tell you” (Jer 19:2). After visiting the potter's shop, the Lord instructed Jeremiah to head to the valley of Ben-hinnom, which is just south of Jerusalem. It's likely the potsherd gate was near the potter's shop and was known as the place where the potter would discard broken vessels that were no longer useful and could not be repaired. The content of Jeremiah's message was then given by the Lord who instructed His prophet, saying, “Hear the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘Behold I am about to bring a calamity upon this place, at which the ears of everyone that hears of it will tingle.'” Hear the word of the Lord was the common phrase spoken by a prophet who spoke for the Lord. This reveals that the message was not from the prophet himself, but was actually God's Word to the people. The plural reference to the “kings of Judah” likely includes the current leadership as well as the prior dynasty of kings responsible for the deplorable state of affairs in Jeremiah's day. Jeremiah used God's proper name, YHWH (יהוה), eight times in this chapter. YHWH (יהוה) was God's covenant name with Israel and would have reminded the people of their relationship with Him. Jeremiah also used one of God's titles, referring to Him as “the LORD of hosts”—literally, the LORD of the armies—who was also identified as “the God of Israel.” It should be remembered that Israel was a theocracy and God was their Judge, Lawgiver, and King (see Isa 33:22). They were in a binding contract with Him which included blessings and cursings depending on whether they obeyed or disobeyed (Deut 11:26-28; 28:1-68). Because of Israel's long history of idolatry and rebellion, they had chosen the path of cursing. Because God has integrity and keeps His Word, He was about to fulfill His promise to judge them based on the agreement of the Mosaic Covenant. God was about to unleash a calamity (רָעָה raah – evil, misery, distress, injury, calamity) upon Judah and Jerusalem, and the result was that “the ears of everyone that hears of it will tingle.” Here was a sensation that one could feel all the way up to one's ears as the news of terrible calamity was about to be unleashed on the nation. God then explains why this was going to happen. He said: "Because they have forsaken Me and have made this an alien place and have burned sacrifices in it to other gods, that neither they nor their forefathers nor the kings of Judah had ever known, and because they have filled this place with the blood of the innocent 5 and have built the high places of Baal to burn their sons in the fire as burnt offerings to Baal, a thing which I never commanded or spoke of, nor did it ever enter My mind." (Jer 19:4-5) Jeremiah mentions three reasons for God's judgment: 1) They had forsaken the Lord, which meant the covenant relationship had been abandoned. Once they had forsaken the Lord and His righteous directives, all forms of evil followed. 2) They had made Jerusalem an alien place where sacrifices were made to idols. 3) Their pagan sacrifices had degenerated to the place where they sacrificed their innocent children to Baal. Idolatry had permeated Judahite culture to such an extent that they'd lost their identity as God's people and were no longer distinct from the pagan cultures around them. Forsaking Yahweh did not lead to atheism, but idolatry, which is a form of thievery, as it gives worship to manmade objects instead of the Lord. Biblically, there is only one God (Isa 45:5-6), and to worship someone or something in His place is to steal the glory due Him (Isa 42:8). Furthermore, idolatry subverts the Lord's authority and eventuates in social and judicial perversions. Being only a block of wood or stone, idols cannot provide, protect, or guide those who worship them, but neither do they make demands contrary to the proclivity of the fallen human heart. And when there is no check on the human heart to restrain its sinful inclinations, the result is a breakdown in morality that weakens society and leads to harmful behavior, especially toward the righteous, vulnerable, and innocent within a community. Sadly, many churches in America have become superficial and useless, reflecting more the values of our declining culture rather than the holiness God expects of those who are His children and possess His Word. According to the Mosaic Law, human sacrifice was regarded as murder (Lev 18:21; Deut 12:31; 18:10), and God prescribed death for those who practiced it (Lev 20:1-2). We know from Scripture that by the end of his life King Solomon turned away from the Lord and worshipped idols, even building places of worship for them (1 Ki 11:4-8). These pagan worship sites were later used by Israelites to sacrifice their children (Jer 32:31-35). It is recorded that two of Israel's kings, Ahaz and Manasseh, caused their sons to be burned alive to pagan gods (2 Ki 16:1-3; 21:1-6). Apparently, other Israelites were also sacrificing their sons and daughters to idols (Psa 106:34-38; Jer 7:30-31; 19:4-5; 32:31-35; Ezek 16:20-21). Paul tells us that such sacrifices are actually offered to demons (1 Cor 10:20), so it's no surprise that such sacrifices are hellish. Because Israel became corrupt, God destroyed and expelled them from the land by means of military defeat from their enemies. Child sacrifice is mentioned in the list of sins that brought the nation to destruction (2 Ki 17:6-23). When it comes to sacrificing their children, the United States of America outdoes all previous cultures. As of 2021, more than 62 million babies have been aborted in America since Roe v. Wade.[1] Most children are sacrificed for the parent's self-interest. Of unintended pregnancies in the USA, four in 10 are aborted, which amounts to roughly 3,000 per day.[2] And girls are more likely to be aborted than boys, which translates to a form of gendercide.[3] The killing of innocent human life is a violation of the sixth commandment, which states, “You shall not murder” (Deut 5:17). Today, we don't have idol centers located in temples or fields where children are sacrificed to a pagan deity; rather, we have clinical offices with well-educated and well-paid hitmen who use their surgical tools and vacuums to murder the innocent. Our government not only legalizes such activity, but uses tax dollars to fund it. We are a nation guilty before a just and holy God, and one wonders how long such evil can continue before the Lord's judgment falls and renders to us what we deserve? It's unimaginable to serve a God who cannot or will not judge us if we continue our current course of spiritual and moral decline. Of course, forgiveness is available to those who humble themselves and turn to Christ as their Savior. This is true for any sin, however heinous, even murder. We know Judah was unrepentant and that God's judgment was coming upon them. Jeremiah continued His message from the Lord, saying, “therefore, behold, days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when this place will no longer be called Topheth or the valley of Ben-hinnom, but rather the valley of Slaughter” (Jer 19:6). God would change the name of this valley to fit the crime that was committed there; namely, the slaughter of innocent children. In this way it was to serve as a memorial that recalled Judah's unfaithfulness to God and the evil that fell upon the children of the nation. The leaders of Judah had other plans, but God would overrule them and bring about His judgment. The Lord said, “I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place, and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies and by the hand of those who seek their life; and I will give over their carcasses as food for the birds of the sky and the beasts of the earth” (Jer 19:7). God's judgment would be terrible and swift. And the punishment would fit the crime, as they would be put to death by the Babylonians whom God would raise up as a weapon against them, and their dead bodies He would give as food for the birds of the sky and the beasts of the fields. Such language is employed of Jesus at His Second Coming when He puts down rebellion before establishing His kingdom on earth (Rev 19:11-18). The city of Jerusalem would be destroyed in such a way that others would see and be amazed. God said, “I will also make this city a desolation and an object of hissing; everyone who passes by it will be astonished and hiss because of all its disasters” (Jer 19:8). God would intentionally make Jerusalem an object lesson for others to see; no doubt, that others might learn to fear the Lord. God revealed further judgment in which He would create a distressing situation that would result in Israelites engaging in cannibalism. God said, “I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they will eat one another's flesh in the siege and in the distress with which their enemies and those who seek their life will distress them” (Jer 19:9). God knows the wickedness of the human heart and the perversities that materialize when there is no restraint on sin. One day these Judahites were sacrificing their children to Baal and Molech, and in a short time they would resort to eating them! God had warned of this judgment upon the nation if they turned away from Him and lived sinful lives (Deut 28:53-57; cf. Jer 11:1-8). Later, Jeremiah wrote about how this came to pass during the Babylonian siege (Lam 2:20; 4:10). God instructed Jeremiah, saying, “Then you are to break the jar in the sight of the men who accompany you” (Jer 19:10). Here, Jeremiah's act was itself a Word from the Lord, as it communicated in visual form the mind of God toward Judah and Jerusalem. And after breaking the jar, Jeremiah gave a message, saying, “Thus says the LORD of hosts, ‘Just so will I break this people and this city, even as one breaks a potter's vessel, which cannot again be repaired; and they will bury in Topheth because there is no other place for burial” (Jer 19:11). Just as Jeremiah easily broke the jar, so God would break His people and Jerusalem for their sins. And just as the potter's jar could not be repaired, and would be thrown into a trash heap, so the Israelites, who were guilty of horrible sins, would be killed and buried in Topheth because there is no other place for their corpses. The Lord continued, saying, “This is how I will treat this place and its inhabitants,” declares the LORD, “so as to make this city like Topheth” (Jer 19:12). Jeremiah offered no call to repentance. Rather, the picture is one of judgment that is sudden and final. The clay jar is broken and that's it. God's judgment was upon that generation to whom Jeremiah spoke, but His judgment did not render His former promises to the nation obsolete, as future generations could know God's grace and blessing. Walter Kaiser states: "The fact that this sin-sickness cannot be “cured” does not mean that there are no future possibilities for a restoration to God's favor again. This word of judgment is for the present generation; there will be no reversals for those who have failed to respond so frequently to the message currently being delivered, but the promises of God made to the patriarchs and others about his choice of the nation, his gift of the seed that will bring salvation, his gift of the land, and especially his gift of the gospel (that is, that in your seed all the nations of the earth will be blessed), are all irrevocable (Rom 11:29)."[4] Speaking about the destruction of the city, Jeremiah continued, saying, “The houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be defiled like the place Topheth, because of all the houses on whose rooftops they burned sacrifices to all the heavenly host and poured out drink offerings to other gods” (Jer 19:13). The reason for God's judgment is clear. His people had turned away from Him and been worshiping openly on rooftops, offering sacrifices and drink offerings to astral deities and other gods. Because of their unfaithfulness to the covenant, God would destroy Judah, and Jerusalem would burn (Jer 7:16-20; 32:29-30). After giving his object lesson with the clay pot, we learn, “Then Jeremiah came from Topheth, where the LORD had sent him to prophesy; and he stood in the court of the LORD'S house and said to all the people” (Jer 19:14). Once in the temple courtyard, Jeremiah said, “Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘Behold, I am about to bring on this city and all its towns the entire calamity that I have declared against it, because they have stiffened their necks so as not to heed My words'” (Jer 19:15). Because Israel was in a special relationship with God, they were to live righteous lives and not in conformity with the fallen world around them. In this way, they were to have a right attitude and a humble heart that was willing to do God's will. Instead, the leadership and people stiffened their necks and defied God's Word and lived sinfully by worshipping idols and sacrificing the innocent. Judah's prolonged sinfulness had blinded them to their depraved spiritual condition and they were beyond repair by preaching (Jer 25:3) or by prayer (Jer 7:16). Judgment was coming. Jeremiah's message fell on hard hearts and was not received kindly. The next chapter reveals the resistance and hostility Jeremiah received for speaking God's Word, with the result that he was beaten and placed in stocks by Pashhur, a priest and chief officer in Jerusalem (Jer 20:1-2). Moses anticipates that his hearers will enter Canaan and that God will give them victory over the corrupt pagan nations that occupy the land. But Moses warns his people to guard themselves that they do not become trapped in the idolatry that brought about God's judgment on the Canaanites. Moses said, “When the LORD your God cuts off before you the nations which you are going in to dispossess, and you dispossess them and dwell in their land, beware that you are not ensnared to follow them, after they are destroyed before you, and that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, ‘How do these nations serve their gods, that I also may do likewise?'” (Deut 12:29-30). The word beware translates the Hebrew verb שָׁמַר shamar, which means to guard, be careful about, watch over, and in this context refers a warning that after victory, the Israelites were to guard themselves against the idols and practices that ensnared (נָקַשׁ naqash) the Canaanites and brought about God's judgment. Moses follows with the statement, “You shall not behave thus toward the LORD your God, for every abominable act which the LORD hates they have done for their gods; for they even burn their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods.” (Deut 12:31; cf., Lev 18:21; 20-1-5). Some of the abominable acts practiced by the Canaanites included gross sexual immorality, which included all forms of incest (Lev 18:1-20; 20:10-12, 14, 17, 19-21), homosexuality (Lev 18:22; 20:13), and sex with animals (Lev 18:23; 20:15-16). They also engaged in the occult (Lev 20:6), were hostile toward parents (Lev 20:9), and offered their children as sacrifices to Molech (Lev 18:21; 20:1-5; Deut 18:10). God specifically told His people, “You shall not follow the customs of the nation which I will drive out before you, for they did all these things, and therefore I have abhorred them” (Lev 20:23). Yet, this is what Israel did throughout their history (Psa 106:37-38; 2 Ki 17:6-23; Jer 7:30-31; 19:4-5; 32:35; Ezek 16:20-21). Excurses on Human Sacrifice in the Old Testament Cultures throughout human history have practiced human sacrifice. Some of these include Chinese, Egyptians, Canaanites, Greeks, Romans, Africans, Incans, Mayans, Aztecs, Peruvians, Europeans (Brit, Celts), Vikings, Koreans, and Native American Indians.[1] Glenn Sunshine states: "Most pagan religions practiced human sacrifice at some point in their history. Each of the three principal gods of the Celts demanded human sacrifices by a different means—Taranis by bashing the skull in with an axe or burning, Esus by strangling, and Teutates by drowning. The Druids, who presided over these sacrifices, were also well known for putting prisoners of war in wicker cages and burning them alive as a sacrifice to the gods. The Norse also engaged in widespread human sacrifices, with perhaps the best documented taking place at the temple of Uppsala, Sweden. The Greeks and Romans also engaged in human sacrifice in their earlier history. Greek legend tells of a number of human sacrifices in the Mycenaean period, but according to Plutarch the Greeks sacrificed humans as late as the Persian Wars, just prior to the battle of Salamis in 480 BC."[2] When it comes to sacrificing their children, the United States of America outdoes all previous cultures. As of 2021, more than 62 million babies have been aborted in America since Roe v. Wade.[3] Most children are sacrificed for the parent's self-interest. One resource states, “In the USA, where nearly half of pregnancies are unintended and four in 10 of these are terminated by abortion, there are over 3,000 abortions per day.”[4] And girls are more likely to be aborted than boys, which translates to a form gendercide.[5] The killing of innocent human life is a violation of the sixth commandment, which states, “You shall not murder” (Deut 5:17). Of course, forgiveness is available to those who turn to Christ as their Savior. This is true for any sin, however heinous, even murder. According to the Mosaic Law, human sacrifice was regarded as murder (Lev 18:21; Deut 12:31; 18:10), and God prescribed death for those practiced it (Lev 20:1-2). Apparently, other Israelites were also sacrificing their sons and daughters to idols (Psa 106:37-38; Jer 7:30-31; 19:4-5; 32:31-35; Ezek 16:20-21). Critics have raised three problem examples of human sacrifice in the Bible, and these include 1) Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac, 2) Jephthah's sacrifice of his daughter, and 3) God the Father's sacrifice of His Son, Jesus. First, in Genesis 22, Moses records an event in which “God tested Abraham” concerning his son Isaac (Gen 22:1). The Lord told Abraham, “Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you” (Gen 22:2). It's important to note that this was a test of Abraham's faith. God has a pattern of testing His people to humble them (Ex 16:4; 20:20; Deut 13:3; Judg 3:1-2; Isa 48:10). Abraham obeyed and did as the Lord instructed, right up to the moment that Isaac lay bound on the rock, with Abraham's hand raised, ready to slay him with a knife (Gen 22:3-11). But God interrupted and told him, “Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me” (Gen 22:12). Abraham then turned and saw a ram caught in a thicket, which he took and offered to God “in the place of his son” (Gen 22:13). Abraham passed the test. He loved and trusted the Lord above all else, even his precious son, Isaac. Abraham learned that God provides for him; therefore, he named the place “The Lord Will Provide” (Hebrew יְהוָה יִרְאֶה Yahweh Yireh or Jehovah Jireh) (Gen 22:14). The writer to the Hebrews mentions this event in the life of Abraham, and states, “By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was offering up his only begotten son; it was he to whom it was said, ‘In Isaac your descendants shall be called.' He considered that God is able to raise people even from the dead, from which he also received him back as a type” (Heb 11:17-19). Second, in the book of Judges there was an incident where a man named Jephthah offered his daughter as a sacrifice to God, and this because of a vow he made to the Lord (Judg 11:29-40). It's possible that Jephthah felt he had to barter with God as an act of diplomacy in order to secure his victory over the Ammonites, and he did this by making a vow (Judg 11:30-31). God gave Jephthah victory over Israel's enemies, so Jephthah kept his vow. However, it should be noted that Jephthah's act of sacrifice was not commanded by the Lord. Furthermore, it's possible, based on an alternate reading of Judges 11:31, that Jephthah only dedicated his daughter to service to the Lord rather than actually killing her. The two major views concerning Jephthah's sacrifice of his daughter are as follows: Jephthah actually offered his daughter as a human sacrifice, and the statement “a burnt offering” should be taken at face value. If this is the case, then Jephthah probably derived this strange understanding and commitment from the Canaanite culture, for human sacrifice was forbidden under the Mosaic Law (Lev 18:21; 20:2-5). This would also explain Jephthah's grief when he said to his daughter, “You have brought me very low, and you are among those who trouble me; for I have given my word to the LORD, and I cannot take it back” (Judg 11:35). Jephthah only dedicated his daughter for service to the Lord and did not kill her (cf. 1 Sam 1:9-11; 26-28). This understanding is derived from an alternate reading of Judges 11:31 in which Jephthah's vow was to dedicate for service whoever “or” whatever came through the door of his home (YLT). If a person, he/she would be dedicated to God for a lifetime of service, “or” if an animal, it would be sacrificed. This view is both linguistically possible and contextually favorable because Jephthah knew Scripture well enough not to make such a blunder (Judg 11:15-27), the text seems to emphasizes dedication when it reads that his daughter “had no relations with a man” (Judg 11:39), and future generations honored her faithfulness (Judg 11:40). In both of the above possible understandings of Jephthah's actions, God never commanded human sacrifice, and Jephthah is never praised for what he did. Third, some have criticized the cross of Jesus as a form of forced human sacrifice. The argument is that God the Father forced His Son, Jesus, to be sacrificed on a cross to die a horrible death. It is true that God offered His Son as a sacrifice for our sins; however, Scripture reveals that Jesus went to the cross as a willing substitute, to lay down His life for us. Isaiah tells us, “The LORD was pleased to crush Him, putting Him to grief; if He would render Himself as a guilt offering” (Isa 53:10a). In this verse we see the Father sent and Jesus went. It was an agreement between the two. Jesus said, “the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again. No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father” (John 10:17-18). And after Jesus died and was buried in a grave, “God raised Him up on the third day and granted that He become visible” (Acts 10:40). Furthermore, the Father “raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come” (Eph 1:20-21). Jesus was not forced to go to the cross, so His death cannot be compared to the human sacrifices in the Old Testament, in which children and adults were forced to die against their will. The Indian markets continued to hit fresh record highs in the week gone by on the back of positive global cues. Benchmark indices hit new landmarks, with the BSE Sensex crossing 46,000 for the first time, while the Nifty ended at 13,514. Going ahead, vaccine approvals, foreign fund flow, macro data, and global cues will remain the driving forces for the markets this week. Besides, IPOs and stock-specific developments will also impact sentiment. While the trend in global markets will be guided by developments in Brexit deal talks, US Fed interest rate decision, and updates on the expected US stimulus package, domestic markets will be waiting for major data points like inflation and import-export updates. The WPI and CPI inflation data are scheduled to be announced today. The Federal Reserve heads into its meeting on December 15 and 16. The market is assuming the central bank will merely refine its forward guidance on policy rather than buying more bonds. Back home, India's total coronavirus cases mounted to 98.84 lakh with death toll rising to 1.43 lakh, according to Worldometer. The country's total Covid-19 active caseload has dropped to below 3.6 lakh, and comprises just 3.66 per cent of the total coronavirus infections. Apart from these, Brent crude oil movement, foreign fund flow and the Rupee's trajectory would also be watched by investors. Foreign investors have bought Rs 33,383 crore worth of shares in December till now. Analysts believe that given the persistent dovish tone of global central bankers, improved prospects of sound earnings growth and weak dollar index, FPI flow should remain benign in subsequent period for domestic markets. And now, let's take a look at the trade setup for today Asian stocks started a busy week with guarded gains as investors gauged the chance of added US fiscal and monetary stimulus, while a last-gasp extension to Brexit talks dodged a hard divorce. Progress on coronavirus vaccines cheered risk sentiment, as the historic mission to vaccinate more than 100 million people in the United States began today. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan edged up 0.1 per cent. Japan’s Nikkei added 0.4 per cent and Australia's ASX 200 rose half a per cent. In commodities, oil prices edged higher on Monday, with Brent crude futures rising 12 cents to $50.09 per barrel. On the back of such favourable cues, the SGX Nifty was trading 45 points up at 13,580 levels, at 7:30 AM, indicating yet another record-breaking opening for the Indian markets today. Besides, India’s industrial activity touched an eight-month high in October, which might also help investor sentiment. The Index of Industrial Production grew by 3.6 per cent in October on a year-on-year basis, led by significant expansion in consumer goods, electricity, and infrastructure goods.. Burger King India's Rs 810 crore IPO will debut at the bourses today. The quick-service restaurant chain is expected to have a strong debut as its IPO had received an overwhelming response from investors, with the public offer being subscribed 156.65 times. Going ahead, the IPO of Mrs Bectors Food Specialties will open for subscription on Tuesday, with the price band fixed at Rs 286-288 per share. The bakery products maker plans to raise Rs 541 crore from the IPO.
Asian markets rose on Wednesday as investors tracked positive news on Covid-19 vaccines and ongoing efforts to launch more fiscal stimulus. Australian ASX 200 was up 0.7 per cent in early trading, while Japan’s Nikkei rose over 1 per cent. Hong Kong’s main index also gained 0.8 per cent. On Wall Street, stocks notched new record levels overnight at the S&P and Nasdaq, boosted by gains in the healthcare sector on the back of positive vaccine news and seeming progress on US stimulus talks. The Dow rose 0.35 per cent, the S&P 500 gained 0.28 per cent and the Nasdaq added 0.5 per cent. On the back of such strong gains in global indices, the SGX Nifty was also trading 36 points up at 13,458 levels, at 7:30 am, indicating a positive start for the Indian markets. Meanwhile, Fitch Ratings has lowered its projections for India's GDP contraction to 9.4 per cent in the current financial year from 10.5 per cent forecast earlier owing to a sharper-than-expected rebound in the economy. However, the agency has warned against weak investment demand with Covid-19 affecting the economy and asset quality in the financial sector deteriorating and holding back credit growth. Besides, financials and bank stocks will once again be in focus as the the Supreme Court will continue its hearing in the interest waiver case today. Yesterday, the government told the apex court that interest waiver on all loans during the six-month loan moratorium period will cost over Rs 6 trillion which may render most banks unviable. Apart from these, market participants will track newsflow on the Covid and vaccine front. An expert panel is set to today review the applications of Bharat Biotech, Pfier-BioNTech and Serum Institute of India seking emergency use authorisation for their vaccines. India's Covid-19 case tally has increased to 97.35 lakh while death toll has mounted to 1.4 lakh, according to Worldometer. The Union government on December 8 issued another notification regarding changes in the Foreign Exchange Management Act permitting FDI in defence production up to 74 per cent under the automatic route. As such, defence-related shares like Hindustan Aeronautics, Walchandnagar Industries, and Astra Microwave Products are set to trade actively today. And, finally, let's look at some stock specific developments for the day. ICICI Bank will offload 2.21 per cent stake in ICICI Securities through the offer for sale route today and tomorrow in order to comply with the minimum public shareholding norms. The floor price for the OFS has been fixed at Rs 440 per share. If fully subscribed, ICICI Bank will be able to raise at least Rs 313 crore. S&P has revised Tata Steel's outlook to 'stable' from 'negative' and affirmed 'B+' rating.
Last start with a quick look at the global markets. Wall Street indexes closed at record highs overnight as investors grow increasingly hopeful about a vaccine to combat rising Covid-19 cases. Pfizer Inc and Germany’s BioNTech SE sought emergency approval of their vaccine candidate from the European regulator on Tuesday. Competitor Moderna Inc also applied for emergency approval from the European regulator on Tuesday. Consequently, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq indexes closed at record highs, both rising over 1 per cent, each. The Dow, meanwhile, gained 0.6 per cent. Asian markets, meanwhile, were displaying slight weakness in Wednesday's early deals. Australia’s S&P ASX 200 dipped 0.3 per cent. Japan's Nikkei also fell 0.15 per cent while Hong Kong's main index was down half a per cent. The SGX Nifty, was flat, on the mixed global cues and hovered at around 13,130 levels at 7:30 AM. In commodities, oil prices extended losses to a second day on Tuesday after OPEC and its allies left markets in limbo by postponing a formal meeting to decide whether to lift output in January. Brent was at $47.25 per barrel, down 1.32 per cent on the day. Back home, the RBI's monetary policy committee will today begin its meeting today the resolution of which would be announced on December 4. Analysts expect the MPC to leave interest rates unchanged, after data showing the economy contracting less than expected and persistently high inflation. Meanwhile, economists and market participants are also closely watching the commentary from the RBI around liquidity. Auto stocks are once again expected to be in focus. Stocks of the companies that reported their November sales data post market hours yesterday will react in today's session. Hero MotoCorp sold 5.91 lakh units of motorcycles and scooters in November 2020, against 5.16 lakh units in November 2019. Tata Motors' November sales also grew to 49,650 vehicles from 41,124 units in the year-ago period. And, Eicher Motors sold 63,782 units of motorcycles in November 2020, against 60,411 units in November 2019. Besides, market participants will focus on stock-specific developments, foreign fund flow, and the Rupee's trajectory. Coal India yesterday reported a 3.4 per cent rise in production at 51.7 million tonnes in November. The company had posted an output of 50 million tonnes in the corresponding month of the previous fiscal. On the Covid front, India reported 36,456 fresh cases of Covid-19 on December 1, taking its overall tally to 94.99 lakh, according to Worldometer. The death toll, meanwhile, has risen to 1.38 lakh. And, in the primary market, quick service restaurant Burger King India will open its three-day IPO today. The price band for the IPO has been set at Rs 59-60 per share. Bids can be made for a minimum of 250 equity shares and in multiples of 250 equity shares thereafter. You can read about analysts and brokerages recommendation on the IPO on our website.
The Indian markets scaled fresh peaks last week, but the bulls' hold weakened as the benchmark indies turned volatile as compared to the last couple of weeks. Although, both Sensex and Nifty rose 1 per cent each in the holiday-shortened week, both the headline indices turned volatile after hitting fresh record high levels. In fact, it was the broader markets which stole the spotlight with the Nifty Midcap index climbing 2.8 per cent and Smallcap gaining 1.5 per cent. The volatility in the Indian equity markets is set to continue this week as sentiments oscillate between fear of rising Covid-19 cases globally and optimism over vaccine progress. The expiry of November series derivatives contracts would also add to the volatility. Besides, owing to a lack of other major domestic triggers, market participants will turn their focus to US stimulus talks and global cues. Stock-specific developments, the Rupee's trajectory and oil price movement will also be tracked. On Friday, foreign institutional investors remained net buyers in the capital market as they purchased shares worth Rs 3,861 crore. Although, analysts say, that they are not buying as aggressively post the first two weeks of November. And, as such, market participants will also keep an eye on foreign flow fund. According to Angel Broking, mostly all the major positive factors are already priced in by the markets. And although the possibility of immediate levels of 13,100 - 13,200 is still achievable, the rally may not be that smooth now. From the technical point of view, for this week, Friday’s low of 12,730 will now be seen as key support. A move below this will extend the corrective move towards 12,600 - 12,450 levels; whereas on the higher side, 12,963 is the level to watch out for. On the Covid front, India's infection tally moved to 91.4 lakh on Sunday, while the recoveries surged to 85.6 lakh, according to Worldometer. The country's death toll has risen to 1.33 lakh. Now let's have a look at the global cues and today's trade setup. US shares slumped on Friday on a combination of dwindling aid for the U.S. economy and rising novel coronavirus infection rates. The Dow dropped 0.75 per cent, the S&P 500 fell 0.68 per cent and the Nasdaq ended down 0.42 per cent. A broad gauge of Asian shares edged up to record highs on Monday morning as hopes for imminent coronavirus vaccines buoyed investor sentiment, but worries over the impact of economic lockdowns and uncertainty over U.S. stimulus capped gains. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up 0.38 per cent, pushing past a previous record high touched on Friday. Trading activity was thin early in the Asian day, with Japanese markets closed for a holiday. Seoul’s Kospi was 1.5 per cent higher and Australia's ASX 200 gained half a per cent. The SGX Nifty, too, was trading around 80 points up and testing the 13,000-mark. So, traders can expect a gap-up start for the domestic indices today. Banking-related stocks and financials could be in focus today, after the RBI panel recommended several changes in the banking industry which includes proposals to raise promoters cap to 26 per cent from current 15 per cent in 15-year period and to allow large corporate houses as promoters of banks or take a significant stake in banks. Besides, Reliance Industries may do the heavy-lifting for the markets today after the Competition Commission of India cleared RIL's bid to buy Future group's retail, wholesale and logistics assets amid legal battle with Amazon.
Benchmarks Sensex and Nifty logged healthy gains last week and rallied over 5 per cent to inch closer to their lifetime highs. The Sensex is now just 0.9 per cent away and Nifty 1.4 per cent from their record high levels, recorded in January, 2020. And, with clarity emerging on the next US president, analysts expect the benchmark indices to continue the previous week's rally and log new lifetime highs this week. Analysts expect the US dollar to weaken, oil prices to moderate, and interest rates to remain low under president-elect Joe Biden's administration, providing a tailwind for domestic equities. Many are optimistic that Biden’s experience in handling international affairs under the Obama administration may help repair relations with China and boost global trade. On the other hand, the markets could see some turbulence if President Donald Trump refuses to concede defeat. The market trend this week will further depend on how participants react to Bihar election outcome, macro data, and September quarter results. The Bihar assembly polls ended on Saturday and the counting of votes will be held tomorrow. Several exit polls gave the RJD-led Opposition alliance in Bihar an edge over the ruling NDA, while at least three predicted a clear majority for the 'Mahagathbandhan'. On the macro front, industrial production and inflation data are scheduled to be announced on Thursday. Around 2,600 companies are set to declare their quarterly earnings in the last week of September quarter earnings season. Among these, investors will mainly track the results of big ticket names like Tata Steel, Mahindra & Mahindra, NMDC, Aurobindo Pharma, and Coal India, among others. Apart from these, market participants will also follow the Covid-19 trend. Rupee's trajectory, foreign fund flow, and oil price movement. FIIs net bought Rs 13,399 crore worth of shares in the first week of November against Rs 14,537 crore of buying in October. On the Covid front. India's caseload went past 85 lakh on Sunday, while 1.26 lakh people have died so far, according to Worldometer. Meanwhile, the national recovery rate has improved to 92.49 per cent, according to the Union Health Ministry data. And, in the end, let's have a quick look at the trade setup for today. Wall Street stock futures and Asian indices started strong on Monday. E-mini futures for the S&P 500 jumped 0.6 per cent on Monday. In Asia, Korea's Kospi, Australia's ASX 200 and Japan's Nikkei were all up over 1.7 per cent in early deals. At 7:30 AM, the SGX Nifty was trading around 12,450, up 176 points and indicating a gap-up opening for the Indian markets today. Lakshmi Vilas Bank will be in focus today after the bank reported widening of its net loss to Rs 397 crore in the September quarter because of rise in bad loans and provisions. As for capital raise, the bank said significant progress with Clix group is being made. And, the Rs 6,400 crore IPO by Hyderabad-based Gland Pharma is set to open today. The price band for the offer has been fixed at Rs 1,490-1,500 per share. While analysts at IIFL recommend that investors subscribe to the issue given the long-term growth potential, they highlight that relatively rich valuations leave limited scope for upside in the near-term. The issue will close on November 11.
The Dow and S&P closed higher on Monday with the Nasdaq posting slimmer gains on the eve of the US presidential election, as investors girded for what could be big market swings this week. Democrat candidate Joe Biden leads in national opinion polls, but races are tight in battleground states that could tip the election to Republican candidate Donald Trump. Analysts said the outcome most likely to shake equity markets in the near term would be no clear winner on Tuesday night. The counting of votes will begin around 5.30 am (Indian Standard Time) tomorrow. The main Wall Street indices posted strong gains in overnight deals ahead of the polls. The Dow rose 1.6 per cent, the S&P 500 gained 1.2 per cent and the Nasdaq added 0.4 per cent. Asian indices were also firm in Tuesday's early deals., Australia's ASX 200 gained 1.75 per cent, Hong kong's main index rose 1.4 per cent and South Korea's Kospi also surged 1.6 per cent. Consequently, the SGX Nifty was also ruling at 11,754 levels, up 84 points, indicating a strong opening for the domestic indices today. Even for investors back home, the US elections will remain a major trigger and as such, market participants will track the newsflow regarding the same, Besides, votes will be cast for 94 seats in the second phase of Bihar Assembly elections while the Supreme Court will resume hearing on the interest waiver case. Apart from these, corporate results and stock-specific developments will trigger individual stock moves. State-owned Punjab National Bank posted a net profit of Rs 621 crore in the second quarter – a 22 per cent jump from Rs 507 crore in the year-ago period. The bank’s net interest income soared 29 per cent to Rs 8,393 crore from the year-ago period. Shriram City Union Finance reported a nearly 10 per cent year-on-year fall in consolidated net profit at Rs 275 crore for the quarter. All these stocks will react to their numbers today. A total of 90 companies including Sun Pharma, Adani Gas, Dabur India, and PVR are scheduled to announce their quarterly results today. NTPC is expected to trade actively today after the its board approved the buy back of 197.8 million equity shares at a price of Rs 115 per unit for a total consideration of Rs 2,275.74 crore. The company has fixed November 13, 2020 as the record date for the buyback. Larsen & Toubro might also be in focus after emerging as the lowest bidder for the C6 package of the National High-Speed Rail Corporation’s bullet train project, at Rs 7,289 crore. This is the second contract for the company in the mega project. And, India's Covid-19 case tally has soared to 82.66 lakh while the country's death toll has mounted to 1.23 lakh, according to Worldometer.
The benchmark indices fell around 2.5 per cent last week following a global rout in equity markets. And, owing to the forthcoming US elections, on November 3, global cues will continue to remain a key driver for the domestic markets. Today, the markets will first react to Reliance Industries and ICICI Bank's quarterly earnings, while auto stocks could also see some reaction following October sales data. Reliance Industries on Friday reported a 15 per cent drop in its second-quarter net profit at Rs 9,567 crore on the weak oil business. Meanwhile, ICICI Bank’s net profit rose almost six times to Rs 4,251 crore on account of growth in net interest income and low tax burden. Meanwhile, volatility is expected to grip the markets owing to the overhang of US presidential polls and uncertainty over global growth due to resurging cases of coronavirus in the US and Europe. Last week, India VIX surged to close at 25 levels. Besides, Fed interest rate decision on November 5 and PMI data for the US, the UK and China will also be tracked by investors. Back home, quarterly earnings from over 600 companies including HDFC and Punjab National Bank and auto sales numbers this week will prompt individual stock moves. PMI data for the manufacturing and services sector will also be released this week, which would also influence sentiment. On the Covid front, India reported a daily jump of 45,928 Covid-19 cases on Sunday, as per Worldometer website, taking the tally to 82.29 lakh. The country's death toll has mounted to 1.22 lakh. And now, let's take a look at the trade setup for today. Underwhelming outlooks and results from some of Wall Street's largest companies last week further soured the mood and dragged U.S. stocks lower last week. On Friday, the S&P 500 lost 1.2 per cent, the Nasdaq dropped 2.45 per cent while the Dow fell 0.6 per cent. Asian shares extended losses on Monday on worries about global demand as many economies slid back into coronavirus-induced lockdowns while upcoming U.S. presidential elections led to heightened caution. On Monday, Japan's Nikkei was up 0.6 per cent. Australian shares were down 0.1 per cent while New Zealand's benchmark index eased 0.6 per cent. Oil prices hit five-month lows. Brent crude LCOC1 to a low of $35.74 per barrel, a level not seen since late May. Bank stocks are expected to be in focus today as the Supreme Court will resume hearing in the loan moratorium case. Last week, the central government asked lenders to credit the difference between compound interest and simple interest for six months of moratorium period on loans up to Rs 2 crore. And, Equitas Small Finance Bank will debut at the bourses today after the issue price was fixed at Rs 33 per share. The Rs 518 crore public issue was subscribed 1.95 times during October 20-22.
The SGX Nifty was trading 50 odd points higher at 11,840 levels at 7:30 AM, indicating a gap-up opening for the Indian markets today. This comes despite a weak set of global cues. US indices fell sharply to open the week’s trading, as anxiety over new record daily COVID-19 cases in the United States, Russia and France weighed on investor appetite. The Dow fell 2.3 per cent, the S&P 500 lost 1.86 per cent, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.64 per cent. Asian markets also declined on Tuesday. Australia’s ASX 200 fell 1.6 per cent, while Japan’s Nikkei dipped 0.2 per cent. Hong Kong’s main index also slid half a per cent. Back home, corporate results will remain the key trigger for the Indian markets. Investors will first react to the results announced post market hours yesterday. Meanwhile, Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services’ net profit rose by 21 per cent to Rs 304 crore in Q2FY21, from Rs 252 crore in the same quarter a year ago. A total of 37 companies including Bharti Airtel, Tata Motors, and Amara Raja Batteries are scheduled to announce their September quarter earnings today. Analysts expect Bharti Airtel's losses to shrink and revenue rise on year-on-year basis, helped by firm subscriber addition and ARPU rise in an otherwise seasonally weak quarter. Meanwhile, Tata Motors is seen reporting muted numbers in year-on-year terms, largely due to fall in JLR volume. Meanwhile, in a big positive for India, MSCI will implement changes in Foreign Ownership Limits in the MSCI Global Indexes containing Indian securities coinciding with the November 20202 Semi-Annual index review. On the Covid front, India's total cases have risen to 79.45 lakh, with 1.19 lakh deaths, according to the latest update by Worldometer. Aurobindo Pharma has reached a definitive agreement to sell its US subsidiary Natrol LLC to private equity firm New Mountain Capital and its affiliate Jarrow Formulas in an all-cash transaction valued at $550 million.
Wall Street lost ground on Tuesday, with halted Covid-19 vaccine trials and an elusive US stimulus agreement. The Dow fell 0.55 per cent, the S&P 500 lost 0.63 per cent, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.1 per cent. Asian equities were also under pressure early Wednesday. Japan's Nikkei and Hong Kong declined 0.2 per cent while Australian ASX 200 index was flat. Consequently, SGX Nifty also came under pressure and was trading 60 points lower at 11,880 points at 7:30 AM, indicating a negative opening for the domestic indices today. Back home, the Supreme Court will today hear a batch of petitions seeking a waiver of interest on loans during the moratorium period and seeking an extension of the moratorium. Investors will track the court proceedings, with bank stocks being in focus. On the macro front, WPI inflation for September will be announced later in the day. A total of 16 companies including Infosys, Tata Elxsi, and Den Networks are scheduled to declare their September quarter earnings today. Infosys is expected to report a strong set of numbers for the quarter, mainly led by the ramp-up of large deal wins. Yesterday, Wipro approved a share buyback worth Rs 9,500 crore, having improved its performance in the second quarter of FY21 on several parameters, apart from giving a stronger outlook. In the quarter ended September 30, Wipro reported a net income of Rs 2,484 crore, a growth rate of 3.4 per cent year-on-year.
