In this episode, Jeannette talks to Bryan Clayton, the CEO and cofounder of GreenPal, an app that connects property owners with local lawn care professionals. Bryan is also the founder of Peachtree Inc; one of the USA's biggest landscaping firms. He shares the story behind his two hugely successful businesses. How having a big vision, while still being able to focus on getting the vital day to day tasks done enabled him to grow fast. Bryan also talks about why entrepreneurs need to pay attention to their personal wellbeing. KEY TAKEAWAYS Think of each stage of your business as a level in a video game. Focus on conquering the challenges at that particular level. At level one of your business journey, don't worry about things like your culture and brand, focus on getting customers. You have to have a big vision. But, at the same time be prepared to knuckle down and do the necessary small scale tasks. It is not possible to keep your life in perfect balance during the early days of a new business. If your business gets a bit stuck, push on. It is a lot harder to start all over again than it is to keep going. If you think you may want to sell your business, build your company in a way that makes it as easy as possible to do. All entrepreneurs experience low points. Celebrating the small wins will help you to get through those periods. Small wins compound and soon turn into big wins. Focus on one or two things at a time. BEST MOMENTS ‘Get on YouTube University. ´ ‘I am my business, my business is me.' ‘Do fewer things that don't matter.' This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. It's never too late to be BRAVE and BOLD and unlock your inner BRILLIANCE. Bryan Clayton shared with us several solid tips that led to his massive and ongoing success with GreenPal. Before starting GreenPal Bryan Clayton founded Peachtree Inc. one of the largest landscaping companies in the state of Tennessee growing it to over $10 million a year in annual revenue.GreenPal, being called the "Uber for lawn care" by Entrepreneur magazine, is an awesome mobile app that helps homeowners connect with the right lawn care professional nearest to them. So not only are homeowners getting easier access to people that can help them with their yards, but lawn care businesses are also benefiting greatly from this app with increased business! One of the great tips Bryan shared in this episode was to "celebrate the small things". In the beginning stages of the app, he set a goal with his team to make 100 sales in a week to prove to themselves that growing the business was not only possible, but realistic. When they reached that goal, they went crazy with the celebration as if they had just won a Nobel Prize. They have since grown the business so much larger and GreenPal now has over 300,000 active users! This is just one of many tips Bryan shared with us, check out this episode to hear more!

KEY TAKEAWAYS If we have a business idea without any money, we should accept that without failure, we cannot gain anything. There are levels that we should get through but the most important thing is that we should get through these levels one by one. The first step always should be “hustle” without thinking about nights and weekends. Courage, hustle, and patience should be our key values while starting a business. BEST MOMENTS “If you watch a movie and the main character just wins all the time and never goes too low points, it is not a great interesting story”. “It is very much almost like a video game where you look at it and it is like ten levels of challenges every level has its own final boss. And you just really have to focus on every level at a time and so level one might be “I don' have any money, I don't have any customers, I don't have a product, I don't have anything”, so level one might be “I just have to hustle, nights and weekends”. Develop a prototype of some kind of product and hustle up twelve customers.” Nothing matters until you get through that level and the thing is a lot of people worry about level ten when they are on level one”. “When it comes building a new business from scratch, it is not like learn and start. You start, then learn”. “The good thing about building a technology-based business is that you can many times not have to solve the same problem over and over and over again. If you have ever technology-based business, you can get to the root cause of most issues and develop software to solve the problem”. “You are doing three things at once all the time. You are working in the business, just running it, making sure customers are happy, making sure things are happening. You are working on the business, which is developing the systems, marketing systems, the R&D systems, the accounting systems, all the things that go into making the business run. And then you are working on yourself. You are learning skills”. He definitely will revamp your thoughts about Entrepreneurship by the end of this episode! Bryan is the CEO and co-founder of GreenPal an online marketplace that connects homeowners with Local lawn care professionals. GreenPal has been called the “Uber for lawn care" by Entrepreneur magazine and has over 200,000 active users completing thousands of transactions per day. Before starting GreenPal Bryan Clayton founded Peachtree Inc. one of the largest landscaping companies in the state of Tennessee growing it to over $10 million a year in annual revenue before it was acquired by Lusa holdings in 2013. Bryan's interest and expertise are related to entrepreneurialism, small business growth, marketing and bootstrapping businesses from zero revenue to profitability and exit. Tune in now and make sure to take away the notes with you! Conversation Highlights: [01:09] Bryan has been in business for more than 20 years. His father, one day, asked him to cut the neighbours grass. It was his first business, that he grew to one of the largest landscaping company, worth more than $10 million. [02:48] He wanted to sell the company so that it could become a part of something bigger and his team members could have better opportunities. Lusa holdings finally acquired the company in 2013. [04:24] It was as if the author of the book was shedding light on Bryan. If you have too many products and services, you need to consolidate before you sell your business. Bryan then emphasized the need to be the best at one thing. [08:29] Bryan, after selling the Peachtree Inc., realised that business gives him the reason to level up and grow. So, in order to fill the void, he laid the foundations of GreenPal. GreenPal is like the “Uber for lawn care." He believes that revenues are the best form of financing. [14:00] Bryan explains the importance of Profit at different stages of business. You first need is to get revenue. He further elaborates on the importance of customer feedback and shares some of the memorable feedbacks he received at GreenPal. [21:19] Leveraging technology is a great opportunity for you to take your business to the next level and now is the time to implement it. [24:57] Hire an expert for 4-5 hours a week than hire a newbie for 50 hours a week. [27:28] Bryan thinks that if you look at your business as an infinite game, then you can help yourself get through the hard times. Failure is not an option. He also stresses the importance of Culture.
