The ACLU's Cody Wofsy talks about the lawsuit his group has already filed. Then, Trump granted sweeping clemency to the more than 1,500 people charged in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, including those convicted of assaulting police officers. Jackson Reffitt, son of convicted Jan. 6 rioter Guy Reffitt, discusses the pardon his father received from Trump on Monday. And, Trump has pulled the U.S. out of the Paris climate agreement. Their dad is in prison for his actions on Jan. 6. Their brother was the one who turned him in. Their mom moved to D.C. to support “political prisoners” in the D.C. jail. Sarah and Peyton Reffitt are caught in the middle. Can this family reconcile?Read more:On Christmas Eve 2020, Guy Reffitt sent a text to his family group chat. He was furious about the outcome of the 2020 election — which he believed was stolen from former President Donald Trump. “Too many lines have been crossed,” he wrote. “Too many years this happened. We are about to rise up the way the Constitution was written.” That's when his son, Jackson Reffitt, went to his room and filed a tip to the FBI. Roughly 15 percent of the more than 1,100 people charged for their actions on Jan. 6, 2021, were turned in by family members, friends or acquaintances. The Reffitts are one of those families, shattered by the insurrection and its aftermath. Now, they're trying to put the pieces back together.Today on “Post Reports,” listen to the Reffitts as they try to work through everything that's happened in their family — and in the country — over the past few years.

The bipartisan Congressional committee investigating the January 6th insurrection recommended that former president Donald Trump face criminal charges for sparking the attempted coup. We look back at the case of Guy Reffitt, the first person to be prosecuted for his role in the violent insurrection. On Jan. 6, 2021, teenager Jackson Reffitt watched the Capitol riot play out on TV from his family home in Texas. His father, Guy, had a much closer view: He was in Washington, armed with a semiautomatic handgun, storming the building. When Guy Reffitt returned home, Jackson secretly taped him and turned the recordings over to the FBI. His father bragged about what he did, saying: “I had every constitutional right to carry a weapon and take over the Congress.” Guy Reffitt was the first person to stand trial for his role in the riot, and the case has divided his family. This week, Reveal features the story of the Reffitt family by partnering with the podcast Will Be Wild from Pineapple Street Studios, Wondery and Amazon Music. Hosted by Andrea Bernstein and Ilya Marritz, Will Be Wild's eight-part series investigates the forces that led to the Jan. 6 insurrection and what comes next. "We are taking the lessons we learned in 2020, and we are going forward to make sure they never happen again, ever," said Cleta Mitchell, a Republican election lawyer, during a meeting concerning "election integrity" efforts. Groups on the right who buy into the "big lie" concerning the 2020 election are trying to refocus and reform efforts ahead of upcoming elections, according to audio of these meetings obtained by NPR.Guy Reffitt, a person who went to the Capitol on Jan. 6, was sentenced to more than seven years in prison for his actions during the insurrection. How will his trial and sentencing influence further legal action for those charged in relation to the riots? [00:30] Election ‘Day' in Arizona Enters Day Three (7 minutes) Maricopa County is somehow still not finished counting votes from the Arizona Republican primary. What is going on? [7:55] The Investigation Is the Cover-up (12 minutes) The Justice Department has subpoenaed White House Counsel Pat Cipollone as part of its investigation into the January 6 “insurrection” and “efforts to overturn the 2020 election.” In reality, the investigation into the “insurrection” is meant to cover up the real insurrection: the 2020 election steal. [20:20] Salon's Truth Bomb (12 minutes) Left-wing Salon published an article titled “When Whistleblowers Go to Prison, We're on the Road to Tyranny.” The article describes the case of Daniel Hale, who is serving a 45-month sentence in a maximum-security prison for blowing the whistle on Barack Obama's drone strikes. The Obama White House routinely used the Espionage Act to treat whistleblowers like spies. This is why James Risen called the Obama administration “the biggest threat to freedom of the press in a generation.” [32:00] Orwellian Doublespeak (5 minutes) Guy Reffitt, the first January 6 protester to stand trial, has received a seven-year sentence for “threats of violence” and entering restricted grounds—another example of America's lopsidedly biased administration of justice. [37:00] Will Garland's DOJ Prosecute Donald Trump? (9 minutes) Earlier this week, American Spectator noted that the White House would love to arrest and prosecute Donald Trump because he gets in the way of their fundamental transformation of America. If this happens, however, it would tear the country apart. The Bible does prophesy of another civil war in the United States, and we must be spiritually sobered and emotionally prepared for what is coming. [46:25] E-Mail Feedback (9 minutes)

The PACT Act is the ”Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics” bill, and President Joe Biden promised veterans “As long as I have a breath in me, we're going to fight to get this done”. Legal developments continue for those involved in the events of January 6, 2021. This episode our hosts discuss the trial and conviction of Jan. 6 rioter Guy Reffitt, whether the Supreme Court will face increased pressure to create ethics rules in the wake of Ginni Thomas' texts to Mark Meadows, and explain the significance of a federal judge's decision that former President Trump "more likely than not" committed federal crimes in his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results.
Mainly focusing on a series of bizarre text messages sent from Ginni Thomas to Trump Chief of Staff Mark Meadows between 11/5/20 & 1/10/21. Also updates on the conviction of Guy Reffitt, the failure of the DOJ to properly issue charges against one Texas paramilitary gang president, the detention of Enrique Tarrio, the second Proud Boys superceding indictment, the parking garage meeting between Tarrio, Rhodes and others, Manafort's attempt to travel to Dubai on a revoked passport, and the revelation that a 15-page error-ridden report on Dominion Voting Systems, previously thought to have been authored by volunteer Trump attorney Kathrine Friess was actually a cut-and-paste job by Joanna Miller, a young former intern who was promoted ahead of her competency to a job as a "senior" aide to Peter Navarro.
It's one month since Russia first invaded Ukraine, under the pretext of denazifying the country. But Putin's calculation that his troops would be greeted as liberators by Russian-speaking Ukrainians has proved to be wrong. Nick Sturdee has found that the invasion appears to have unified the disparate parts of the Ukrainian population. Romania's Prime Minister pledged “unconditional political support” for Ukraine in February and so far, has welcomed more than half a million refugees. Jen Stout has been to one of the border crossings and finds the arrival of the Ukrainians has helped locals forget their own differences. In Washington, the process of holding those responsible for the storming of the US Capitol last year has reached a new phase, as the first trial - Guy Reffitt, of Texas came to court earlier this month. Tara McKelvey spent time with the defendant's relatives at the federal courthouse and saw the impact of the political divisions on that family and across the US. Ecuador's president this year signed a declaration to expand the boundaries of the Galapagos Marine reserve by more than 23 000 square miles. It's being seen as a victory for wildlife conservation and for local fishing communities, as the area had been vulnerable to overfishing by mainly Chinese trawlers. But, finds Mark Stratton, these were not the only threat to the region's eco-system. The Caribbean island of Martinique is an overseas territory of France. President Biden banned the import of Russian oil and natural gas into the United States on Tuesday, which is expected to have a serious impact on the Russian economy. Meanwhile on the ground, reports say that 2 million people have fled Ukraine, including one million children. Recent reports from the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change say that countries are not doing enough to reduce fossil fuel emissions. Mary Annaïse Heglar and Amy Westervelt, hosts of Crooked Media's “Hot Take,” join us to discuss recent climate news. And in headlines: Minneapolis teachers took to the picket lines for their first strike since 1970, Missouri Republicans introduced a state bill that would allow private citizens to sue anyone who helps a Missouri resident get an abortion out of state, and January 6th rioter Guy Reffitt was convicted on all five criminal charges against him. Guy Reffitt, a 49-year-old from Wylie, is the first person charged in connection to the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol to go on trial. KRLD's LP Phillips explains why the first trial related to the insurrection is significant and what unfolded in the courtroom during the trial's first week.
Julio and guest co-host Jamilah King, deputy inequality editor at BuzzFeed News, discuss the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and critique Western media coverage of the war. And, they talk about the ongoing January 6th trials. We also hear from Analilia Mejia, co-executive director of the Center for Popular Democracy, on policing and President Biden's State of the Union address. ITT Staff Picks: Western media has shown a double standard in its coverage of the ongoing war in Ukraine, writes Ishmael N. Daro in The Nation. For BuzzFeed News, Zoe Tillman reports on the first January 6 trial, beginning with defendant Guy Reffitt who is facing five felony counts for his participation in the attack. “When politicians promote policing as a solution to crime, they fail to reckon with the real roots of policing and its impact on the most affected communities,” writes Lexi McMenamin for Teen Vogue on President Biden's State of the Union address. A fire at a Ukrainian nuclear plant has put Europe on alert. Russia now controls the facility, and the fire is out. How safe are Ukraine's other nuclear plants? Russia continues its indiscriminate attacks on Ukrainian cities. Thousands of people are believed to have been killed or wounded, and the country's economy has changed overnight. And in the first trial connected to the January 6 attack on the Capitol, a son testified against his father. Guy Reffitt was bragging about the attack when his son Jackson secretly recorded him and turned him in.

The first criminal trial of a defendant charged with attacking the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, kicked off in DC federal district court on Monday, February 28, 2022. The defendant, Guy Reffitt, is charged with five felonies, including obstructing an official congressional proceeding, carrying a firearm and obstruction justice by threatening his own child in an attempt to prevent them from turning him in to the authorities. Jury selection began with a series of probing questions by the judge in an effort to pick jurors would could be fair and impartial. As the case moves toward opening statements, one of the most interesting and consequential question is, how will Reffitt chose to defend the case? Will he attempt to convince the jury that he was doing precisely what then-President Donald Trump told him to do? And if so, what are the implications for not only Reffit but for any future trial of Donald Trump himself? It's official: the University of Texas and the University of Oklahoma will be leaving the Big 12 conference, but it is to be determined where they will go next. Could Pat's BYU join the Big 12 to replace UT or OU? Biden appears to have answered a reporter's question with, “My butt's been wiped!” Whether he said that or not this time, it seriously is getting out of hand with Biden and what he says day after day. A poll from May shows that 55% of the population says that they are pessimistic about where America is headed. The unvaccinated are protesting by the thousands in Europe for being forced to do things they don't want to. According to a guest on MSNBC, there is an “idiot population that needs to be told what to do.” Today is the start of the 1/6 Commission. Guy Reffitt tells CNN's Chris Cuomo why he turned his father in for his participation at the events of January 6. Vaccine hesitancy continues to be an issue in the push to get everyone vaccinated and we have seen some smaller incentives such as free doughnuts and tickets to sporting events among other things, but Ohio has definitely stepped up its game. Gov. Mike DeWine is offering $1 million each to five adults by lottery, if you get your shots. Separately, he is offering full-ride scholarships at a public state university to five vaccinated teenagers. Incentives have been shown to work in some cases, but this plan has gotten a mixed reaction so far. Joel Achenbach, science reporter at The Washington Post, joins us for more. Next, let's get into the mind of what persuaded one man to storm the Capitol on Jan. 6. ProPublica was able to obtain a jailhouse letter from Guy Reffitt, who is currently being held for his part in the riots that day. He is not accused of entering the Capitol building or hurting anyone, but is suspected of having a gun and numerous text messages show his planning to put the country on notice that people are not happy... prosecutors characterize him as a serious danger to his family, Congress, and the entire system of justice. Things were so worrisome to his family at one point, that his own son reported him to the FBI. Joaquin Sapien, reporter at ProPublica, joins us for a look into what motivated Guy Reffitt. One of the rioters, Guy Reffitt in the attempted coup threatens to shoot his kids if they snitched on him.
