It's a new week and spring is in the air! Well, at least it feels that way for the Car Mom... Before you know it though it will be summer and you have to figure out what to do with your kids while school is out. That is currently the journey Kelly is on as she decides if she wants to send them to daycare or camp. Unfortunately, there is no Camp Phineas and Ferb like the one the ladies ran when they were kids. That's right, Kelly and Lizz ran their own week long summer camp when they were teenagers made them some bank! Could this be your side hustle this summer? Speaking of things from the Disney universe, neither Kelly or Lizz have ever been to a Disney park but they feel like they could be Disney adults. They're both into the Disney adult content creators and have a love for the High School Musical soundtrack. Maybe one day? Lent starts this week and Kelly and Lizz are getting ready to give something up for the next 40 days. This year not only are they giving something up, but they want to do something to better themselves before Good Friday. But the real best of lent season? The fish fry!! It's been a while since Kelly and Lizz checked in with their bank accounts for Last Three Transactions. Kelly is getting ready for a family trip to Arizona by stocking up on Tea Collection clothes for the kids and lots of activities and toys for the plane. Plus, she got some Crocs for herself and she's very excited about it! Meanwhile, Lizz has had her life completely changed thanks to the Haakaa breast pump and the Athleta pale yellow collection. There are two juicy stories in Industry News. First, Carvana is making moves into the franchise business with the purchase of a Stellantis store. Then, why the Honda and Nissan merger may be donezo! Finally, as we head into Lent a quick reminder of a solid Ditch the Drive-Thru favorite. If fish will be a staple for you the next 40 days, it's time to break out the salmon sushi bowl recipe! To start off this episode, Emily and Jamie discuss their recent experiences with their kids at the dentist. Jamie shares her frustrations and reflections on the dental appointments, particularly concerning her middle daughter's oral surgery and the dentist's approach to her children's dental care. They discuss the challenges faced by neurodiverse children in dental environments, and their own personal experiences at the dentist as adults. In this inspiring episode, Jamie welcomes Steve Johnston (@dad.vs.blindness), a radiologist and father, to share his experiences as a dad, particularly how he navigates raising his son who was diagnosed with a rare disease called Bardet-Biedl Syndrome. Steve recounts the journey from his son's birth, marked by polydactyly (extra fingers and toes), to receiving his official diagnosis 7 years later with a potentially devastating prognosis: progressive vision loss leading to blindness. Despite the initial shock and disbelief, Steve reflects on his approach to coping, and emphasizes the importance of processing emotions and seeking professional help in navigating the complexities of grief and acceptance. He highlights the transition from grieving to taking action, and how this led to his family creating a nonprofit organization.Through their candid discussion, Jamie and Steve underscore the significance of community, professional guidance, and individualized approaches in navigating the complexities of rare diseases and parenting. They spend time discussing the impressive nonprofit's inception and goals, Steve elaborates on the lack of immediate treatment options upon his son's diagnosis and the subsequent motivation to take action. Despite initially lacking a specific target for fundraising, the family embarked on creating a nonprofit, "A Race Against Blindness," with the aim of raising awareness, supporting research, and ultimately funding potential treatments or cures for Bardet-Biedl syndrome and related conditions. Steve shares the challenges of navigating the complex landscape of medical research funding for rare diseases and the fortuitous alignment with a research group in the UK working on potential therapies. Through their nonprofit endeavors and physical challenges like triathlons, the family not only raises funds but also instills values of resilience and perseverance in their children, preparing them to face life's inevitable challenges with mental fortitude and adaptability. In this week's Live Ask a Nurse segment Jamie and Emily discuss how to manage oversupply, a common concern among breastfeeding mothers. They offer practical tips such as using hand expression or a Haakaa to reduce milk flow before feeding, and reclining during breastfeeding. They emphasize the importance of seeking guidance from a lactation consultant for personalized advice tailored to individual needs and circumstances. They also mention the resources available through the Nurture annual membership. Early in pregnancy his spinal cord had failed to close properly which resulted in part of it being exposed in a fluid-filled sac, protruding from his lower back. Once Carla received Ethan's diagnosis there was no question that she needed to do whatever she could to give him the best outcome in life. At 24 weeks the decision was made for both Ethan and Carla to undergo an Rare and complex in-utero surgery at Mater Mothers' Hospital in Brisbane which was the 12th of it's kind across all of Australia and New Zealand in an attempt to help increase the likelihood of Ethan being able to walk unaided. This surgery put both her life and Ethan's life at risk. Ethan, Carla & their entire family have had to overcome a lot of obstacles in a short period of time but Ethan truly is a little miracle who is kicking goals today. Both Carla and I hope that this conversations helps to raise awareness about spina bifida - please welcome Carla About our sponsor- Her Keeper: Her Keeper is an inclusive place to find beautifully curated products to assist you or a muma-to-be's journey into pregnancy and postpartum care. The biggest help in both of my post-partum journeys were my doulas. When I tell any new mom this, often I get the response: “What is a doula?”. I found out about doulas because my friend in LA had one for the nights, allowing her to catch up on sleep after she came home from the hospital. But doulas are so much more than that and that is why I sat down with my own doula and created this episode. We recorded this episode 2 months after my son was born and we are literally passing him back and forth during this interview so you might hear him in the background. In this episode we talk about Kendra's own pumping story for her two kids but also about the Doula profession itself. What is a doula? What is the difference between a Post-Partum Doula and a Birth Doula? What do they do and how can they help you in your birthing and post-partum journey? How do you find a doula? What should you look for in a doula? How can a doula help you with breastfeeding? All of these are questions we discuss in this episode. Megan's pregnancies were both so different.. a lot like her births! Her second birth story was so exciting and fast. She woke up IN TRANSITION! Can you imagine? I loved how her husband tried to complete their labor checklist, even when Megan only had 60 seconds between contractions. So cute! An underlying theme with the accidental unassisted births we have heard is how there seems to be a sense of peace that all of these mamas had. I love that the body and mind just know what to do and how to remain in a peaceful state, even with things going a little off plan! It's so inspirational and it's a good reminder that you CAN do it! My pregnancy update was a little out of order but you get the idea! :) I have changed midwives now and feel very much at ease with my decision! Megan loved the Boba Wrap for baby and muslin swaddle blankets. She's also one of our many Haakaa fans! (PS - Thanks Cait for my pre-baby Haakaa!! Can't wait to use it) Megan has a YouTube channel (featuring a beautiful video of her birth!), Instagram and a website, so there's plenty of ways to follow along on Megan's beautiful journey. Breastfeeding seems like the most natural thing a mom and baby can do, right? Well, as Kara explains, it's a learning curve for both! Moms often don't know who to turn to for breastfeeding advice - the internet is teeming with incorrect information and your well-meaning pediatrician or midwife may have outdated information. An IBCLC, or lactation consultant as most of us know them by, are often covered by your insurance company and can really help you build a strong breastfeeding relationship. Kara has been a friend of mine for over 15 years and we could've talked to her about breastfeeding for hours! She does such a great job normalizing all of the things deemed "problematic" for new moms. Since we both became moms, Kara has had a passion for breastfeeding. We hope you find our talk as helpful as we did! Kara loves the Haakaa, like so many other moms we talked to. I know a product I will absolutely be buying for this baby! :) If you are in New Jersey and want to schedule a visit with Kara, jump on her website and follow her on Instagram or Facebook, no matter where you live! Don't forget to follow us on Instagram and send us your funny pregnancy/parenting moments! We always like to hear from you, so send us an email - birthnaturallypodcast@gmail.com Stay happy and healthy! These are some crazy times but they, too, shall pass.
