Did you know that only about 10 percent of U.S. high school students get 9-10 hours of sleep a night, the amount required for healthy sleep at that age? Teens who aren't sleeping enough don't just walk around groggy. A lack of healthy sleep negatively impacts mental health, cognitive function, reactivity, emotional regulation, immune function, and relationships.  Clearly, adequate sleep is important. But how do we help teens with a lot of demands and distractions prioritize sleep? That's what Heather and Julie, authors of the new book, “Generation Sleepless,” offer in this episode of Beautifully Complex. It's common to hear college students joking about pulling all-nighters and drinking truly unwise amounts of caffeine to get through classes and clubs and survive that one irritating professor who likes assigning ten-page papers every week. However, this trend of increasingly sleep deprived teenagers is not limited to college students alone; in 2018, the CDC declared a global public health crisis for high school students after many studies showed they too were sleeping far too little to be healthy. The long running narrative for teenagers is that they don't need sleep. They're invincible, right? Wrong. New research has found that tweens and teens go through a sort of regression and really need about as much sleep as a toddler. But that's not how we treat them. High schools start super early in the morning, teachers still give hours of homework, and after school sports/programs are so much more important for college applications than ever before. Sleep continues to fall down on the priority list but it should be at the top. So many things are tied to sleep. Teens that get 8 to 9 hours of sleep a night tend to have better grades, less anxiety and depression and so many other characteristics. How do we foster good sleep habits in our teens? Heather Turgeon and Julie Wright are here to help with their book 'Generation Sleepless: Why Tweens and Teens Aren't Sleeping Enough and How We Can Help Them'. I caught up with Heather for this episode of Adult Education.

The Future of Sustainable Farming Could Be Cold Plasma Plasma is a fascinating medium. It's considered the fourth state of matter—alongside solid, liquid and gas—and it's everywhere. In fact, more than 99.9% of all matter in the universe is assumed to be in plasma form. You may be most familiar with plasma as the material inside those glowing novelty lamps found in museum gift shops, but it's naturally found in the sun, lightning, and the northern lights. Research into plasma and how it intersects with various industries has been increasing, especially in the area of agriculture. Cold plasma specifically is being tested as a way to speed up plant growth and make fertilizer that's better for the environment. And it works: Lots of research has shown that exposure to cold plasma makes seeds germinate faster. While this sounds like a sci-fi concept, farmers have seen for decades that plants grown on the site of lightning strikes grow faster. The strangest part? Scientists don't know why this works, only that it does. Joining Ira to talk about cold plasma and its possible future in the agriculture world is Jose Lopez, professor of physics at Seton Hall University, based in South Orange, New Jersey. Lopez is also program manager for plasma physics at the National Science Foundation.   Why Are Teenagers So Sleep Deprived? Teenagers have a reputation for being moody, making rash decisions, and maybe even being a bit lazy. Turns out, lack of sleep may be partly to blame for some of this stereotypical behavior. Contrary to popular belief, teens actually need more sleep than adults—about 9 to 10 hours a night—to help support critical brain development. But American teens are getting less sleep than they ever have before due to a perfect storm of biology, increased homework, early school start-times, and technology. Over the past three decades, the average American teens' sleep has shrunk to just 6.5 hours a night. Ira talks with Heather Turgeon and Julie Wright, psychotherapists and sleep specialists. They're co-authors of the new book, Generation Sleepless: Why Teens and Tweens Are Not Sleeping Enough and What We Can Do to Help Them. Perhaps you've made the mistake of cutting your child's sandwich into triangles instead of squares. Or you've dealt with siblings that won't stop fighting, a child who refuses to get out of bed or cries when you try to leave the house. And perhaps your child's struggles, tantrums, refusals, frustrations have gotten a little bit under your skin and made you hot under the collar— and while you tell yourself to be patient and loving, you start yelling, threatening, bribing or caving under the pressure. We get it. SO many parents feel helpless, desperate and frustrated when their kids just won't cooperate or seem so unreasonable and you are just trying to get out of the house, get them to bed or get dinner on the table. How can we balance our responsibility to keep them clean, fed, rested and happy while ALSO finding ways that they can become better aware of and connected to the processes themselves? It’s the middle way. Freedom to nourish trusts that kids can and should take the lead in these realms of nourishing self-care rituals with our supportive presence. Sometimes we lose it. Really lose it. We’re not talking “How many times do I have to tell you to put your shoes on” in a slightly elevated tone. We’re talking… well, Dr. Stuart Shanker calls the emotional state in question “red brain,” and you get the picture. When we’re in red brain, yelling can actually feel pretty good. It’s also singularly ineffective. Here’s how Dr. Alan Kazdin of the Yale Parenting Center explains it: If the goal of the parent is catharsis— I want to get this out of my system and show you how mad I am— well, yelling is probably perfect. If the goal is to change something in the child, or develop a positive habit in the child, yelling is not the way to do that. But clamping down on our anger isn’t effective, either— in fact, studies prove that attempting to do so actually increases our sympathetic nervous system responses and makes us feel more angry. So this is all pretty tricky. But in this episode we discuss: techniques for recognizing red brain before we’re in it why we sometimes treat strangers better than our loved ones Margaret’s “self-doghouse” technique how to properly make it up to our kids after we blow up And after discussing what NOT to say, Amy discusses what TO say to our kids with with Heather Turgeon and Julie Wright, the authors of Now Say This: The Right Words To Solve Every Parenting Dilemma. Heather and Julie explain their extremely effective “ALP” technique for communicating with our kids— Attune, Limit-Set, Problem-Solve. They also explain the importance of “the repair set” and modeling emotional health for our kids, particularly after we have not been our best selves. Here’s links to some of the other research and studies discussed in this episode: Margaret’s surprisingly useful “family doghouse” plaque Stephen Marche for NYT: Why You Should Stop Yelling At Your Kids Kelly for Happy You, Happy Family: Why Every Parent Should Know the Magic 5:1 Ratio – And How to Do It Dr. Karen Leith et al for Journal of Personality and Social Psychology: Why Do Bad Moods Increase Self-Defeating Behavior? "What inspired us to write this book was that we saw so many families and parents struggling with the dilemma of conflicting sleep advice that they were getting. A lot of parents telling us that they really had a feeling that their child was capable of better sleep but that they wanted to be good, responsive, warm parents, and that they’d been reading about attachment parenting and the importance of responding to your baby, your child, so how could they make sense of these two things?"
