Anna B used to be sneaky but now I'm just crafty. I'm obsessed with the number 5, the color purple, & strict routines. I have much gratitude for regrigeration, indoor plumbing, & modern medicine. Trivia podcasts, jigsaw puzzles, Bananagrams, & library books are my favorite distractions. Dislikes include all things politics, computers, tags on clothing, & places with no shade. For laughs I play with other people's infants and toddlers. I live in Amherst, MA. Today, Anna B spoke to us, hilariously, about the importance of finding humor in recovery and in most situations.  She had us laughing many times in her share.  To find a link to her book, please see the resources from this meeting section below.Reco12 is an open-to-all addictions and afflictions organization, dedicated to exploring the common threads of addiction, sharing tools, and offering hope from those walking a similar path. Saturday Morning with Jack Tame

Can you play Bananagrams in space?   Something tells me that with the whole gravity situation, they perhaps don't recommend anything with lots of little parts. Anything that's hard to keep as a full set on Earth is automatically disqualified from the International Space Station.   No Bananagrams. No Monopoly. No scrabble, either.  But Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams are gonna have to find something to fill their time.   An hour from now, the Boeing space vehicle that transferred them up to the space station is going to undock, propel itself into the Earth's atmosphere, and hopefully for the sake of Boeing's ever-sinking share price and diminished reputation, land safely in a New Mexico desert. Butch and Suni will be stuck with no way home, orbiting the Earth at 28 thousand kilometres an hour.   I love space. I love the mind-melting distances, the extremes of energy and heat. I love the endlessness of its unknown. Supermassive black holes. I love the maths, even if I don't understand it. And given human life gets its richness from relationships, meaningful work, and diverse experiences —you can put that on a tea towel— I would love to go.   Suni and Butch felt the same way. And when they took off in Boeing's Starliner on June 5th, they thought they'd be back on Earth just eight days later. But of course, that's not what has happened. Three months on, Boeing has been humiliated. Its first crewed mission has had problems that can't be fully solved remotely, and the capsule will return to Earth, empty. Butch and Suni thought they were going to space for eight days. By the time they're flown back in February next year, they will have been orbiting the Earth for eight months.   What's the longest flight you've ever been on? Mine was about 17 hours. Obviously, a commercial passenger flight is more cramped and less interesting than a few laps on the International Space Station. But in this smart phone age, nothing has more thoroughly convinced me that I don't have the attention span or temperament for long stints in one place, like a 12-hour stopover in a lower tier international airport. So. Boring. Newsflash: Jack Tame would struggle in prison.  The good news is Butch and Suni can talk to their families. They can do a bit of exercise and socialise with other astronauts. Presumably NASA stumps for a Netflix subscription. But the one thing they can't do easily is return to Earth. You can imagine that even for the elite-or-the-elite, it's the kind of situation that does funny things to your head.   So would you do it? Would you go, knowing a week on the space station could become the best part of a year or longer? Would you leave your family? Leave your life? Leave your cat, and your goldfish and the lawns to someone else's care? No wind in your hair. No smell of fresh rain. No scrambled eggs that didn't come in a packet.   I would. I'd do it. I'd leap at the chance. Still, I reckon once might be enough. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Bananagrams is a word game that feels like a cross between Boggle and Scrabble. In the game, each player takes a number of letter tiles from a central group of 144, then arranges those tiles to form any number of connected words in a crossword-like shape. Once a player uses all their starting letters, they call "peel" and each player takes an additional letter to add to their growing maze of words. This process continues until all the tiles in the center are used. Race against your opponents to use all your letters first and win the game!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Whether it's a completing a lab, writing up a grant proposal, or just getting through everyday life, everyone needs a little help. In this week's episode, both of our storytellers share moments where they lent or received support. Part 1: One moment Keith Mellnick is cycling home, the next he's in the emergency room of the hospital with no idea what happened to him. Part 2: Medical student Fabiola Plaza feels compelled to help a woman on the New York subway get a doctor's appointment. Keith Mellnick is a freelance photographer whose past work in the Middle East, Central Asia, and East Africa has been highlighted by National Geographic Books, the Atlantic, and his brother's refrigerator. Based in Washington, DC, he currently works primarily with organized labor and progressive causes throughout the US. In addition to photography and storytelling, he enjoys any opportunity to escape into the woods--far from politics, screens, and oppressive DC heat indexes. Fabiola Plaza is a fourth-year medical student at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Native to Venezuela, she grew up as one of seven children in South Florida. She began playing the viola at a young age and attended a middle and high school for the performing arts. She then attended Columbia University, majoring in Neuroscience and Music. While at Columbia, Fabiola discovered her love for medicine and giving back to the community. Her current research interests involve language differences leading to healthcare disparities, health provider bias against those who are justice-involved, and the effects of gun violence in healthcare. When she is not busy studying, you can find Fabiola playing viola in the New York Repertory Orchestra, being very competitive at Bananagrams and any other board game, or completing another 1000+ piece puzzle. This is normally where the writing staff tries to be cute and make some sort of weird pop culture reference that vaguely ties into the weekly subject for that podcast episode, but this week, honestly … the writing staff doesn't know enough about Enneagrams to be able to do the usual spiel and spent thirty minutes kicking around ideas about telegrams, Bananagrams, Teddy Grahams … clearly, wouldn't have been worthy of introducing a truly noteworthy episode of the Overlap Podcast. This week, our boys Sid and Keith are joined by Enneagram Expert Kerry Flowers to learn how to utilize your inherent Enneagram power in order to bolster your business and enliven your leadership skills. The second is the fine tuning principle or anthropic principle, which suggests that the Earth is uniquely formed for life. They also discuss how scientists have discovered that there is a sequence to our DNA and this sequence does not come randomly. To illustrate this, Pastor Scott brought Bananagrams, a game like Scrabble, to help the discussion.Pastor Jeff and Pastor Scott discuss how Christianity is the most logical explanation for life, existence, and DNA sequencing. Pastor Scott explains that the Bible is true because of internal evidence, such as John 17:17, and external evidence, such as empirical evidence. He explains his experience in seminary when his professor asked who wrote the Bible, and then had the students watch a debate between a Muslim professor and a Christian professor. The Christian professor explained that if you took 40 people over 1500 years in three different languages and on three different continents, there is no way that their stories would make sense. This illustrates that the Bible is a miracle and cannot be recreated.Pastors Jeff and Scott discussed the Bible and its unique position in the world. C.S. Lewis was an atheist who was converted to Christianity and said that he believed in it as he believed in the sun rising. The Bible is centered around God, Creation, Fall, and Redemption, and points to Christ's coming, death, and resurrection. Tim Keller works with deconstructing Christians and asks them what they will do with the resurrection. Lee Strobel, a secular journalist, set out to disprove the Bible and Christianity, but instead became a believer and defender of the Christian faith due to the truth of the resurrection.

Episode 376 – You can be right, or you can have peace – Part 2   Today we have Ronda. She is 56, from New Orleans, and sober for 2.5 years.   Exact Nature:  https://exactnature.com/RE 20   Highlights from Paul   We are all human, with faulty machines in the dome. It's okay to be right or want to be right, especially in the moment. Sobriety teaches us that we must choose peace. We don't have to choose peace immediately, but eventually, we must, or we develop resentments. Resentments, for many of us, can kill us. Why?   Resentments separate us. Disconnect us. And what's the opposite of addiction—connection.   Better Help:  www.betterhelp.com/elevator - 10% off your first month                                                                               [10:23]  Ronda and Odette discussed the sobriety journey and celebrating the decision to quit vs. the date of your last drink. Ronda is from New Orleans and recently moved to Colorado. She has three grown children, and she is an anesthesiologist. She loves sailing, hiking, and traveling.   Ronda's first addiction was an eating disorder. She coped with stress and shame with food. She recovered from the eating disorder at age 30, and alcohol became a problem. She got a DWI in her mid-forties. Ronda said she ignored all the signs. She didn't want to have a drinking problem. The culture in New Orleans portrays day drinking and excessive drinking as the norm, so it made denial easier.   Ronda was more of a binge drinker than a daily drinker. Her kids started noticing her drinking. Her middle daughter was vocal about her concerns early on. So, Ronda began to hide her drinking. Ronda and the kids evacuated to Phoenix during Hurricane Katrina. Her problem with drinking started then, and it took her ten years to get help.   After getting a DUI, Ronda had to go through a program to align with the recommendations of the medical board. Even her colleagues said, "it could have been me."   When visiting her daughter in sober living, Ronda got sloshed at the airport and faced her daughter's disappointment when she landed. When her daughter stopped protecting Ronda, it was another AHA moment that she had a problem. After her daughter went to rehab, Ronda started moderating when her kids were with her.    There are multiple ways to get sober, and Ronda tried everything and found a mix of programs that worked. Ronda leveraged AA, The Tempest Sobriety School (run by Holly Whittaker), Recovery Elevator, and Café RE in early recovery. With a heavy emphasis on self-care, Ronda was able to find her true soul, her wounded inner child, and the ego that were all within herself. Learning to take care of herself allowed Ronda to stack days and helped her to deal with shame. Plant-based medicine was a pivotal moment in her recovery journey.   Ronda was molested as a young child, and it was one of many childhood traumas that contributed to her addiction. Shortly after confronting her abuser, she took her last drink. It was a burden off her shoulders that she didn't have to hide anymore.   Joy has permeated Ronda's life. She has learned new skills, confronted her past, and found many ways to have fun, including mediation, music, dancing, nature, bubble baths, community, and board games (particularly Bananagrams). Morning routines are critical to Ronda's sobriety routine. She removed herself from social media other than her recovery groups.   Odette's Summary   Odette talks about shame, day counts, and restarting. Committing to sobriety should add value, not shame, to your recovery. It's not about the date. It's about staying on the journey. Remember that you are not alone and together is always better.   Upcoming events, retreats, and courses: You can find more information about our events   Resources Connect with Cafe RE - Use the promo code OPPORTUNITY to waive the set-up fee. Bev Attfield shares an emotionally devastating story of losing her baby at the 20-week ultrasound appointment. Bev explains her journey of what occurred that day and it is, unfortunately, not a unique story for many families. However, Bev shares how this event has changed her life forever. She has an amazing story of resilience and how she and her husband navigated the grief together. They made the conscious decision to continue through and do it in the best possible way. She hopes her story helps others to learn and know that you too can get through this type of loss. This is a powerful episode if you have had a loss or know anyone who has miscarried. Bev's lessons are powerful: Life is short and uncertain, anything is possible, look forward and act with compassion. Listen so you can better understand and support yourself and others. As Principal, Workplace Science at Jostle, Bev cares about the experience people have at work. She explores the role that leaders play in purposefully crafting engaging environments for people to be themselves fully in the workplace. Bev's curiosity about what creates individual fulfillment at work and unique workplace cultures drives her day-to-day work at Jostle and beyond. She's a regular contributor to the Jostle blog and host of the People at Work podcast and Conversations at Work dialog series. When Bev's not doing workplace science, you'll find her running, taking lessons in presence from her dogs, or sharpening her Bananagrams skills.
