Welcome to Episode 97 of the Movement Logic Podcast! In this special episode, Laurel and Sarah talk to four women who recently completed the Bone Density Course: Lift for Longevity about their experiences. Whether it's building strength and stability for hiking and biking, reclaiming confidence in their bodies, or surprising themselves with what they can lift, each woman brings a unique and inspiring story. In this episode, you'll hear from: Leslie Nelson, a former professional dancer and movement educator from the Berkshires of Massachusetts, who rediscovered strength, resilience, and even more mobility through lifting. Julie Wright, a lifelong ballet dancer and psychotherapist based in New York City, who realized that ballet and walking weren't enough to maintain her bone health — and found empowerment through barbell training. Barb Elias, a retired public servant and yoga teacher from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, who worked with her natural hypermobility to build real-world strength that supports her hiking, biking, and day-to-day confidence. Susan Saylor, a former civil rights attorney turned yoga teacher in San Francisco, who overcame her hesitations about lifting and built a new relationship with strength training that shows up both on and off the mat.If you've ever wondered if you're too old, too inexperienced, or too "not a gym person" to lift heavy and get stronger, these conversations will change your mind.Important: The cart for Bone Density Course: Lift for Longevity closes Saturday, May 10th — so don't wait! When Adam and Eve fell into sin in the garden, the curse of the woman was multi-faceted. Genesis tells us that a woman's desire would be for her husband, and Julie Wright believes this may be at the root of the modern woman's tendency toward depression and discontentment. Julie, who is an author, speaker, and founder of “Live Loved Ministries,” explains why women are perpetually chasing after love, affirmation, and validation. She also explains why God is the only one who can fill that empty hole in your life and how recognizing this truth and embracing it allows women to love others from a place of complete wholeness.

It's common to hear college students joking about pulling all-nighters and drinking truly unwise amounts of caffeine to get through classes and clubs and survive that one irritating professor who likes assigning ten-page papers every week. However, this trend of increasingly sleep deprived teenagers is not limited to college students alone; in 2018, the CDC declared a global public health crisis for high school students after many studies showed they too were sleeping far too little to be healthy. Heather Turgeon and Julie Wright join Mighty Parenting podcast host Sandy Fowler this week to discuss this juvenile sleepless epidemic (including their upcoming book Generation Sleepless) and how to combat it with our own teens, including adjusting nighttime routines, family screen time, and social media habits. Learn how to help your own sleep deprived teenager and get them back to a healthy schedule. The long running narrative for teenagers is that they don't need sleep. They're invincible, right? Wrong. New research has found that tweens and teens go through a sort of regression and really need about as much sleep as a toddler. But that's not how we treat them. High schools start super early in the morning, teachers still give hours of homework, and after school sports/programs are so much more important for college applications than ever before. Sleep continues to fall down on the priority list but it should be at the top. So many things are tied to sleep. Teens that get 8 to 9 hours of sleep a night tend to have better grades, less anxiety and depression and so many other characteristics. How do we foster good sleep habits in our teens? Heather Turgeon and Julie Wright are here to help with their book 'Generation Sleepless: Why Tweens and Teens Aren't Sleeping Enough and How We Can Help Them'. I caught up with Heather for this episode of Adult Education.

The Future of Sustainable Farming Could Be Cold Plasma Plasma is a fascinating medium. It's considered the fourth state of matter—alongside solid, liquid and gas—and it's everywhere. In fact, more than 99.9% of all matter in the universe is assumed to be in plasma form. You may be most familiar with plasma as the material inside those glowing novelty lamps found in museum gift shops, but it's naturally found in the sun, lightning, and the northern lights. Research into plasma and how it intersects with various industries has been increasing, especially in the area of agriculture. Cold plasma specifically is being tested as a way to speed up plant growth and make fertilizer that's better for the environment. And it works: Lots of research has shown that exposure to cold plasma makes seeds germinate faster. While this sounds like a sci-fi concept, farmers have seen for decades that plants grown on the site of lightning strikes grow faster. The strangest part? Scientists don't know why this works, only that it does. Joining Ira to talk about cold plasma and its possible future in the agriculture world is Jose Lopez, professor of physics at Seton Hall University, based in South Orange, New Jersey. Lopez is also program manager for plasma physics at the National Science Foundation.   Why Are Teenagers So Sleep Deprived? Teenagers have a reputation for being moody, making rash decisions, and maybe even being a bit lazy. Turns out, lack of sleep may be partly to blame for some of this stereotypical behavior. Contrary to popular belief, teens actually need more sleep than adults—about 9 to 10 hours a night—to help support critical brain development. But American teens are getting less sleep than they ever have before due to a perfect storm of biology, increased homework, early school start-times, and technology. Over the past three decades, the average American teens' sleep has shrunk to just 6.5 hours a night. Ira talks with Heather Turgeon and Julie Wright, psychotherapists and sleep specialists. They're co-authors of the new book, Generation Sleepless: Why Teens and Tweens Are Not Sleeping Enough and What We Can Do to Help Them. The teen voices you heard during this segment were: Zion, Ro'Shell, LaRon, Aleathia, Zahriah, Trysten, Londyn, Jairus and Cix. All are 8th grade students at Manchester Academic Charter School, and recorded by SLB Radio at its Youth Media Center, in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.

She could either abandon months of planning and waste an opportunity to showcase some of California's most epic scenery to a hand-picked group of influential travel writers, or she could bend the rules, take a calculated risk and skirt some barricades. So she went rogue, and the trip that resulted was as hair-raising as it was memorable. In this episode of Lead Balloon, she shares the epic tale, as well as the important lessons she learned about asking forgiveness instead of permission... and BEAR SAFETY. Travel writers Diane Lebow and Laura Kiniry also share their recollections of the trip, and explain why every PR practitioner needs a little bit of "rogue" in them. Every 40 seconds someone in America will have a stroke. That adds up to 800,000 people every year. And of those, 140,000 will die. With those numbers, it’s no surprise that strokes rank among the top five leading causes of death in the U.S. But how many lives could be saved with diet and lifestyle changes? More than you would think!   On this episode of The Exam Room™ podcast, Dr. Vanita Rahman joins “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll to discuss how steering clear of the high fat standard American diet can significantly improve your chances of never having a stroke.   Also, Chuck is joined by a very special stroke survivor who shares how a trip to the gym eight years ago turned into a stay in the hospital and lengthy recovery. Julie Wright is a well known television personality in the Washington, DC area who was in the middle of training for an upcoming race when the stroke hit out of nowhere. She also happens to be Chuck’s wife.   The incident turned her life upside down for months and forced her to closely examine what she was eating. However, she says food was never discussed by her doctors and it wasn’t until she began searching for healthier options on her own that she made the connection.   Plus, Dr. Neal Barnard offers his advice to an Exam Room listener who recently adopted a plant-based diet and wanted some ideas about losing weight besides avoiding high fat nuts and seeds.   If you would like to submit a question for the doctor please tweet @ChuckCarrollWLC or @PCRM using the hashtag #ExamRoomPodcast.   This episode of The Exam Room™ Podcast is sponsored by The Gregory J. Today we explore our kids’ FREEDOM TO FEEL! This is the Q&A wrap-up to our weekly episode where we dive deep into our kids’ (and our!) struggles with big feelings. We explore how tantrums are a gift-- an opportunity to nurture our nervous systems, build emotional intelligence skills and maintain our connection through it all. The big question is HOW can we sensitively support our kids’ big feelings when we ourselves can hardly keep it together? Dig in with us for a deeper understanding of why meltdowns happen, what we can do to support ourselves as well as our kids, and why it’s so critical that we attempt this. We’ll be exploring ways we can align our day-today struggles during kids' big feelings with our true goals for their future and ideals for our best selves, too. We laugh, we cry, we lean in. Join us! It’s also singularly ineffective. Here’s how Dr. Alan Kazdin of the Yale Parenting Center explains it: If the goal of the parent is catharsis— I want to get this out of my system and show you how mad I am— well, yelling is probably perfect. If the goal is to change something in the child, or develop a positive habit in the child, yelling is not the way to do that. But clamping down on our anger isn’t effective, either— in fact, studies prove that attempting to do so actually increases our sympathetic nervous system responses and makes us feel more angry. So this is all pretty tricky. But in this episode we discuss: techniques for recognizing red brain before we’re in it why we sometimes treat strangers better than our loved ones Margaret’s “self-doghouse” technique how to properly make it up to our kids after we blow up And after discussing what NOT to say, Amy discusses what TO say to our kids with with Heather Turgeon and Julie Wright, the authors of Now Say This: The Right Words To Solve Every Parenting Dilemma. Heather and Julie explain their extremely effective “ALP” technique for communicating with our kids— Attune, Limit-Set, Problem-Solve. They also explain the importance of “the repair set” and modeling emotional health for our kids, particularly after we have not been our best selves. Here’s links to some of the other research and studies discussed in this episode: Margaret’s surprisingly useful “family doghouse” plaque Stephen Marche for NYT: Why You Should Stop Yelling At Your Kids Kelly for Happy You, Happy Family: Why Every Parent Should Know the Magic 5:1 Ratio – And How to Do It Dr. Karen Leith et al for Journal of Personality and Social Psychology: Why Do Bad Moods Increase Self-Defeating Behavior? Dr. Ralph Erber et al: On being cool and collected: Mood regulation in anticipation of social interaction. Perhaps you've made the mistake of cutting your child's sandwich into triangles instead of squares. Or you've dealt with siblings that won't stop fighting, a child who refuses to get out of bed or cries when you try to leave the house. And perhaps your child's struggles, tantrums, refusals, frustrations have gotten a little bit under your skin and made you hot under the collar— and while you tell yourself to be patient and loving, you start yelling, threatening, bribing or caving under the pressure. We get it. SO many parents feel helpless, desperate and frustrated when their kids just won't cooperate or seem so unreasonable and you are just trying to get out of the house, get them to bed or get dinner on the table. My guests today will give us what to do and say in these moments using their ALP system that they've taught thousands of parents in their clinical practice over the years. Heather Turgeon MFT and Julie Wright MFT are the authors of the new book Now Say This: The right words to solve every parenting dilemma (Penguin RandomHouse), as well as the popular sleep book, The Happy Sleeper. Based in NYC and Los Angeles, they frequently speak and offer consultations to families on communication, setting limits with empathy, sleep, and more. Imagine there was a way to more effectively and more quickly get our kids to do what we want them to do, when we want them to do it. Imagine if all the struggle and resistance and frustration dramatically decreased in our family life. Heather Turgeon, MFT and Julie Wright, MFT, authors of Now Say This: The Right Words to Solve Every Parenting Dilemma, did more than just imagine these idyllic sceneries: they created a formula for consistently creating more peace, calm, cooperation and relatedness between parents and kids. In this interview, we dive deep into their ALP approach (Attune, Limit Set and Problem Solve) and learn how we can all relate better with each other by becoming skilled in the power of attuning.   Guest Bio Heather Turgeon, MFT is a psychotherapist who specializes in sleep and parenting. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times and The Washington Post, among other publications. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and two kids. She and Julie frequently speak at parenting centers and schools, as well as offer sleep consultations and individual therapy.   Julie Wright, MFT is the creator of the Wright Mommy and Me, one of Los Angeles’s best-known mommy and me programs. She has specialized training and experience in the 0 to 3 years, having interned at the Cedar-Sinai Early Childhood Center and Los Angeles Child Guidance Clinic. She lives in New York and has a son in college.   Mentioned in this Episode The Happy Sleeper https://www.amazon.com/Happy-Sleeper-Science-Backed-Helping-Sleep-Newborn-ebook/dp/B00INIXOUO Now Say This: The Right Words to Solve Every Parenting Dilemma https://www.amazon.com/Now-Say-This-Parenting-Dilemma/dp/014313034X    Connect with the 60 Mindful Minutes podcast   Web: https://kristenmanieri.com  Email: Kristen@kristenmanieri.com    Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/60MindfulMinutes Instagram: @kristenmanieri_

"What inspired us to write this book was that we saw so many families and parents struggling with the dilemma of conflicting sleep advice that they were getting. A lot of parents telling us that they really had a feeling that their child was capable of better sleep but that they wanted to be good, responsive, warm parents, and that they’d been reading about attachment parenting and the importance of responding to your baby, your child, so how could they make sense of these two things?"
