I couldn't be more psyched for this week's guest, LP Giobbi. LP is an absolute bundle of joy and light and her shows are life-affirming and community-building celebrations that connect us through the common bonds we all share.  LP is a DJ, Producer, jazz-pianist and activist. She was one of NPR's Favorite New Musicians of 2023 following her debut album Light Places, and her latest album Dotr, features Danielle Ponder, Portugal. The Man, Alabama Shakes and Holly Bowling, among others.  LP has played a multitude of festivals including Coachella, Lollapalooza, Electric Forest with the likes of Diplo and SofiTukker, just to name a few. She is also well-known in the jam band community for her Dead House performances featuring electronic versions of the music of Grateful Dead, and her stellar 2023 remix of Jerry Garcia's 1972 album, Garcia, is a perfect example of building the bridges that create those common bonds. I talk to LP about her life as a performer and what exactly it has taken (and at what cost) to get to this point, and we also explore her work as an advocate and activist. She founded Femme House, a nonprofit that advocates for gender equity in electronica, heads up her label Yes Yes Yes, and is also Global Music Director for W Hotels. LP is Everywhere, to loosely quote a Dead motto. This is truly one of my favorite interviews, and LP is a bright, shining light that you will learn so much more about through this amazing conversation!!For more information on Roadcase: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email:  info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music:  "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

Welcome to Roadcase!!  We're so psyched to have uber-cool Raina Mullen on the show. Raina plays ripping guitar and lends her stellar vocals to Ghost Light, a relatively new jam band on the scene with their super compelling 2019 debut album, Best Kept Secrets. Proudly taking on the mantle of role model for women who rock, Raina, one of a fairly small club of women artist in the jam band community, relishes her position and seeks to inspire young female performers to push the limits of their musical abilities. Having met her bandmate Tom Hamilton while working at the famous jam-band nexus Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY, Raina went on to join Tom with his American Babies project and now stands shoulder to shoulder onstage with her mentor in Ghost Light.  It is a compelling combination of musical talents and fearless improvisation capabilities -- a quality that is equally distributed throughout all members of this amazing band.  So hop aboard the Roadcase bus for this journey through time and space with Raina Mullen. Welcome to Roadcase!!  We're so psyched to have the incredibly talented and prolific Tom Hamilton on the show this week. Tom, a Philadelphia native, is a songwriter, vocalist and guitarist whose list of bands is a deep reflection of his long career, massive work ethic and exceptional talent: Joe Russo's Almost Dead, Ghost Light, Lacuna, Billy & the Kids, Brothers Past, American Babies, and Electron, among others. His musical efforts are deeply improvisational and the iconic Lacuna project, for example, is a one-take, gorgeous and compelling effort with Holly Bowling realized over the pandemic.  His devotion to the music of Grateful Dead is profound and has informed much of his musical direction throughout his career, providing Tom not only a platform for his improv efforts, but also a springboard to explore his craft with a variety of amazing musicians in exploring different avenues of musical expression. Tom's unbridled enthusiasm for all he does come through loud and clear; his upbeat attitude and glib style is infectious and charming. Lacuna, is as much an ambient LP as it is a journey into raw improvisation from pianist Holly Bowling and guitarist Tom Hamilton Jr.. Sure, tracks on this new LP from the Ghost Light band mates could certainly be featured on one of your meditation apps, but in truth, these jams are far more exciting as a distinct piece of music that came together organically. You see Holly was visiting Philadelphia last summer while pregnant with her first child. With Tom's new studio The Ballroom just recently completed, the pair found some time to just sit down and muck around. The results were so interesting that Tom and Holly decided to put their 46 minute jam out there for the world to enjoy as Lacuna. I caught up with Tom to talk about Lacuna, and as our conversations tend to do, we meandered and talked about a bunch of stuff including Ghost Light, More and of course Joe Russo's Almost Dead.    First song: Isosolost Second song: Smile Pretty for the Camera See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to Roadcase, a podcast exploring the live music experience!!  Join us for this  intriguing conversation with the spectacular Holly Bowling!  Holly is a classically trained pianist whose improvisational work is legendary and well known in the jam band community, due to her painstakingly accurate transcription of Phish jams as well as her gorgeous piano renditions of Grateful Dead's music.  During the Covid lockdown and subsequent show-hiatus, Holly created the "Wilderness Sessions," a collection of powerful and compelling of live piano improvisations which took place across the country in a variety of amazing natural settings.  Her most recent project, Lacuna, with Tom Hamilton, of JRAD and her bandmate in Ghostlight, is a unique instrumental and improvisation project where she and Tom simply played in a studio and recorded the results, which were extraordinary!  Holly also sat in with Greensky Bluegrass at Red Rocks recently and that collaboration resulted in Holly joining Greensky on piano for their current Fall tour.  She is also getting back on the road with Ghostlight in January.  Holly has tons of thoughts on her playing style and why she does what she does; it's an intriguing look into the improvisational mind.  So catch this amazing ride on the Roadcase bus for this conversation with piano virtuoso Holly Bowling. Featuring stories from AJ Masthay, Dean Budnick, Joel Cummins, Holly Bowling, and more, we dive deep into the world of the lot, to learn more about why so many of us show up to a Phish venue hours before the concert even begins.Undermine is brought to you by Osiris Media, the leading music storyteller. In March of 2018 we got word that two stalwarts in the Jam Band world, Tom Hamilton and Holly Bowling were joining forces with a few other musicians to create something new called Ghost Light. Of course we got Tom and Holly on the phone and talked at great length about the project, and where things were heading. Just over two years later, after an album release, and several tours, they are releasing their first ever official live album taken from their performance March 30th, 2019 at the Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver Colorado. The album, like most Ghost Light shows is filled with original songs, covers, and exploratory jams that you just have to hear. Back when we chatted in March of 2018, Tom and Holly were both really excited about how the band came together in the process. Now some two years later, I wondered if that same excitement and cohesion still existed, and that's what I asked as I started my conversation with Tom Hamilton Jr. First Song: 00:56: Head Over Heels Interview Begins: 11:54 Extro Song: 43:50 - Living On A Thin Line > Synth Driver See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We’re big fans of Holly since her debut of Tahoe Tweezer piano composition. For the uninitiated, Holly takes songs by both Phish and The Grateful Dead, transcribes each members parts and then builds out a new composition where she plays everyone’s parts. It’s phenomenal stuff. Aside from her solo work, Holly plays keyboards in Ghost Light another band we love, and is always around for guest spots. To say she’s busy doesn’t do her calendar justice. So we're delighted that she made time to chat about Live at the Old Church and much more. Our conversation started when I asked Holly how she keeps up with everything she’s up to. We spend the morning talking with Holly Bowling this week! She took some time out of a well earned break to talk with us about how Ghost Light became a band while hanging out for the very first time, having laser focus inside the jam, being a music nerd, what it means to have some quality down time, climbing the Mt. Everest of transcribing the Tahoe Tweezer jam, and a whole bunch more!Texture, nuance, and a gift for dexterous high-wire improvisation are the hallmarks of San Francisco-based classically trained pianist Holly Bowling, who infuses jam band music with a technically advanced, emotionally rich style. After studying piano performance at SF State University, Bowling has turned her agile mind and interpretive prowess to the works of Phish on 2013’s Distillation Of A Dream album and the Grateful Dead focused Better Left Unsung (released December 9, 2016 through The Royal Potato Family). Her instantly compelling playing and unerring ability to successfully collaborate with other musicians in an impressive array of styles has brought her to the attention of Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Gov’t Mule’s Warren Haynes, and other luminaries who’ve asked Bowling to perform with them. Already a rising star on the festival circuit, Bowling plans to continue to expand her solo touring, and recently formed a new band Ghost Light with Tom Hamilton, Steve Lyons, Raina Mullen and Scotty Zwang. For more info on Holly's touring, merch, and music head over to hollybowling.com***THIS EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY THE AMAZING AND INCREDIBLE SHOP TOUR BUS & DEFYNE PREMIUM CANNABIS!!!!SHOP TOUR BUS:Visit shoptourbus.com or @shoptourbus on IG and pick up some wonderfully creative and beautiful Grateful Dead inspired shirts/hoodies. You no doubt have heard the buzz not just in the larger community for Ghost Light, but from us here at The Sound Podcast. The quintet, made up of Tom Hamilton Jr., Raina Mullen, Holly Bowling, Steve Lyons and Scotty Zwang is exciting to all our ears, because it offers up something completely different than anything currently in our consciousness. So when we hear something fresh and exciting, well, yeah, we’re psyched. Up until now, Ghost Light’s music, in one form another has only been available through live performance. So this is a band, who’s fandom is totally built on word of mouth, and the reputation of its members. Frankly, they probably didn’t need to put out a record in a world of singles, and streaming services, but we are so glad that they have. I caught up with Tom Hamilton Jr. in Madison, WI, on tour with that other monster band he’s in Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, to talk about Best Kept Secrets, Ghost Light and a bunch more. You’ll definitely want to pre-order Best Kept Secrets at ghostlightband.com and check them out on the road over the next couple of months, those dates are also available on the website. Episode 003 of The Upful LIFE Podcast features drummer SCOTTY ZWANG, currently of Ghost Light. Scotty has been an enigmatic persona in the Northeast jam/jamtronica scenes for well over a decade, and is a fixture on the Philly musical landscape. The erstwhile rhythm wizard goes deep in this interview, taking us back to his humble beginnings in New York, learning the drums and joining alternative rock bands as a youth (Code Anchor). We then embark on the lengthy discussion of his entire career arc, including his stint in Sonic Spank, which is when I first encountered him at The Blockley in Philadelphia.     From there we touch on a variety of projects and endeavors, including the mentorship of KJ Sawka, Scotty joining (and leaving) Greenhouse Lounge and Dopapod, and the creation of his current project Ghost Light, which was formed by JRAD's Tom Hamilton, and includes pianist Holly Bowling, among others. We also take a lengthy and hilarious detour into his history with The Disco Biscuits and affiliated projects. Scotty's story is one of success, failure, and rebounding to bigger and better things. Scotty closes things out with his thoughts on taking a step back from the rock n'roll and EDM party scenes (and the activities that go along with them), as well as his recent choice to go Vegan. We play a little Ghost Light jam in the intro, so Scotty's interview starts around 12:30 and lasts about seventy minutes. This episode's Vibe Junkie JAM of the Week is a look back at the astounding collaboration between Jamiroquai's Jay Kay and the debut performance of The Fearless Flyers, a Vulfpeck side project. Merry Christmas .. Happy Hanukkah   This year's holiday edition of the Deadpod features one of the best acoustic performances of 1970. This takes place at the Fillmore East in New York City on September 20th, 1970. The acoustic set, which we present today, is not only a fine performance but also a fine recording. David Grisman plays mandolin on 'Friend of the Devil' and David Nelson joins with another mandolin on a slow soulful,  'Big Railroad Blues', both continue through Ripple. There is some speculation that Jerry plays piano on 'To Lay Me Down', clearly a wonderful highlight here. Nelson and Grisman are back with mandolins on a fine  Rosalie McFall, following a rare acoustic 'Truckin'. I love  'Cumberland Blues' here.. but then again I usually love this song.. Jerry plays an electic during 'New Speedway' but the vibe is very acoustic. 'Brokedown Palace' provides a fitting conclusion to the set..   Following, I decided to feature one more cut from Holly Bowling's beautiful work 'Better Left Unsung'.. this is 'Eyes of the World (Louieville KY 61874).. it speaks for itself..       Grateful Dead Fillmore East New York, NY 9/20/70 - Sunday   One - 1:02:46   Intro [0:03] ; Uncle John's Band [6:47] % Deep Elem Blues [5:51] % Friend Of The Devil [3:32] % Big Railroad Blues [3:14] % Dark Hollow [2:56] % Ripple [4:20] % To Lay Me Down [5:12] % Truckin' [5:35]%[0:12] ; Rosalie McFall [2:24] % Cumberland Blues [5:04] % New Speedway Boogie [9:31] % Brokedown Palace [5:13]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod122316.mp3   My most sincere hope that all of my friends here have a very healthy and happy Holiday...   thanks for your support...........   the professor

This is an early Keith show, but Pigpen is here as well and does a fine rendition of 'Run Rudolph, Run' to get you in that Holiday spirit :) While none of these songs may go off into extended jams I am certain you'll appreciate the musicianship they show in each and every one..       Grateful Dead Felt Forum - Madison Square Garden New York, NY 12/7/71 - Tuesday   One   Cold Rain And Snow ; Beat It On Down The Line ; Mr. Charlie ; Sugaree ; Jack Straw ; Next Time You See Me ; Tennessee Jed ; El Paso ; Brokedown Palace ; Run Rudolph Run ; You Win Again ; Cumberland Blues ; Casey Jones   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod120916.mp3   Finally I decided to play a wonderful piece from a brand new release that just came out from Holly Bowling. Enjoy her version of 'Unbroken Chain'.. her CD or Album is available from Royal Potato Family records here:   http://royalpotatofamily.com/product/holly-bowling-better-left-unsung/   or from Amazon   Thanks so much for your support of the Deadpod!!!
