Notes: It's been two years since Maggie Wheeler and I last talked on A Breath of Song. No one doubts these times are difficult. Maggie and I get into the grit here... how do you stave off despair? How do you show up in love? How can we, collectively, change the energy? How do we soothe hearts and souls so we are sustained to do the work? Can we give ourselves the same grace of forgiveness we give others? What happens after exhaustion? How can we stay longer in the space of not knowing? How can we stay longer in a song moment and let it develop? Can staying longer be its own practice? This song Maggie shares, The Crow Calls, is an opening to the rhythm, the connection of the natural world, and how that can nurture and change us. This song is a reminder, a call, a resource, and incredibly satisfying to sing. As we talked, Maggie described her heart as "cracked open" from two intense back-to-back experiences that had just happened. I was feeling a lot of pressure, with looming deadlines and large to-do lists, preparing for a big trip. Editing the episode, I was struck by how we practiced showing up as we are, releasing expectations, and paying attention to what is present in the moment... and I came away from our conversation with a welcome sense of clarity and commitment about the next right thing -- and huge gratitude for Maggie's generous, genuine way of moving through the world. I wonder what you will hear that resonates or challenges or invites you? Songwriter Info: Maggie Wheeler is best known in the U.S and internationally for her work as an actress in film, television and voice-over and most notably as the character of Janice on NBC's hit series Friends. Maggie directs the 100-voice Golden Bridge Community Choir in Hollywood, an inter-generational, non-auditioned choir now in its 17th year. She is a prolific songwriter with a catalog of powerful and timely songs that have been sung by choirs worldwide. Kyle is a self-described creative polymath, who balances her work life between fine art, illustration, and graphic design across all platforms. She's a wildly creative, unapologetically self-expressed free spirit who lives a daily practice of gratitude. Her fine art ranges from abstract to realism and involves a wide variety of mediums. Collage, textures and circles are a focal point in her pieces. Her other latest projects include illustrating a children's book, client work in print, VR and motion graphics, sound design and writing. Kyle has a fondness for illustrating animals and botanicals, and for loose, unplanned abstract work. She is also currently writing two books - a memoir and an interactive book about gratitude. Having maintained more than 1800 days of posting her gratitude, she's also given talks on the subject and hopes to offer both books in the very near future. When she is not painting or drawing, Kyle is creating products for her online store, and staying safe with her husband, son and their two dogs, Doodle and Scout in their Woodland Hills home. I’ve been a fan of keyboardist Kyle Hollingsworth of The String Cheese Incident for well over two decades, and he’s always been on my list as someone I wanted to talk with about not only his music but also that of String Cheese. With a new EP out for about a month now, I decided it was a good time to catch up and learn more about his solo working while pruning some insights on String Cheese as well. I can tell you, our conversation was very enlightening and he was very engaging for longer than I had anticipated. Gwinnett County is metro Atlanta's second most populous county. However, until recently, it lacked one thing: Its own craft brewery. Lawrenceville's Slow Pour Brewing Company changed that earlier this year. Located just off the Lawrenceville Square, Slow Pour took a dilapidated building and turned it into a gathering place. One of Slow Pour's founders, John Reynolds and brewer Chase Medlin joins us on the show this week to talk about their journey...and their beers. We also head to SweetWater Brewing to check out a collaboration with Relix Magazine and Kyle Hollingsworth of the String Cheese Incident. Plus, we sample Southbound's newest version of Moonlight Drive....and compare it to a 2015 version Aaron found in the back of his fridge. Oh! You pretty things. Time comes and goes, and here we are: at the very last episode of our second season. After what may very well go down as the most contentious #1 ranking of all time, Evan, Taran, and special guests Bobby "Major Bob" Evers and Jon "Kooky" Harvey go to town on tracking Bowie's many ch-ch-ch-changes, tackling his worst song, his best collaborators, his craziest music videos, and a fun surprise for our guests at the end. Thank you for making Season 2 a stellar, runaway success. Before the power goes out, Evan, Taran, and special guest Ryan Donahue dive straight in to Arcade Fire's worst song, live experience, label drama, and so much more.
