Summary: Hm, is that sound of screaming from the joy of a roller coaster or a stabbing? Today our hosts discuss books set in Theme Parks! Whether like Holly you're more drawn to the magic and experience of places like DisneyLand or you're like Devin chasing adrenaline on some of the fastest and most intense roller coasters on earth, there are books that can give you the thrill you're looking for. Topics Discussed: The Dagger (6:53): Holly discussed FantasticLand by Mike Bockoven, a horror book reminiscent of an adult Lord of the Flies. After a hurricane ravages the Florida coast and isolates FantasticLand, a theme park where “Fun is Guaranteed!,” employees agree to stay behind to make sure the park isn't looted and are promised to be paid to do so. Five weeks later, rescue crews arrive to find heads on spikes, bodies lined up, and employees split into warring factions. Holly's key takeaways were: The story fills in the gaps between the hurricane and what the rescue crews discovered through various POVs; a journalist interviews various people involved after the fact. Since the story is told through multiple interviews, readers must decide which accounts to believe, as survivors may be unreliable or have their own agendas. The novel highlights how quickly social norms break down when survival is at stake. Cut off from the outside world, the employees turn to tribalism, reinforcing the idea that without structure, humans can revert to their most primal instincts. The theme park itself provided a unique structure and setting for such an intense plot; the factions of employees were named after the rides near them such as the Pirates, the ShopGirls as they resort to violence while competing for food, medicine, and social dominance in what had been a whimsical space. The Heart (19:48): Devin discussed Hot Dog Girl by Jennifer Dugan, a YA romance following Elouise (Lou) Parker and her group of friends at their summer jobs at Magic Castle Playland, a run-down local theme park in their town. Lou suffers her junior year summer wearing a giant hot dog suit around the park, while her love interest Nick gets to be a Diving Pirate dating Jessa, a princess. The news that the park will be shutting down at the end of the summer, Lou takes matters into her own hands to ensure that she has the summer of her dreams - from saving the park to fake-dating her best friend, Seeley, so she can ultimately win her man. Devin's key takeaways were: Magic Castle Playland is like any local, run down park that you've ever been to and it's nostalgic in the way it is so typical. A large portion of the plot is dedicated to Lou's increasingly desperate attempts to keep the park from closing and the park itself acts as a mirror and a foil for her own immaturity and growth. The fake dating between Lou and Seeley in order to break another couple up was a challenging part of the story, especially when it's a bi woman doing it with a lesbian to win a cis het man. There's a stereotype of bi women (and men, but mostly women): they lead people on, they're greedy, they can't make up their minds, and this book fed into that stereotype. The “young adult” aspect of this book really shone through. Nick and Seeley were mature, kind, and measured throughout but everyone else was very in their teenage years. Getting the story from Lou's perspective was at times agonizing; a blend of being so accurate to a dumb teenager's brain and Lou's own meddling and dramatic rhetoric. Do you have burning fashion questions? Have you been slipping into Holly's social DMs to ask your deepest, darkest style questions? Well – you are not alone, because we get a TON of questions. So, we only thought it was fair to share one simple fact: Everyone has questions about ‘what to wear.” Every. Body. And Fun Fact: Holly LOVES to answer your fashion questions. So, if you have ever sent her a message then you already know this: HOLLY ANSWERS! It's shocking. We know. But WE ARE THE BEST FASHION FRIEND YOU NEVER KNEW YOU NEEDED, remember? And we mean it. You are our Fashion Besties, and we are here to help. This week, Holly does some shout-outs to listeners who have shared their own fashion concerns – which also just happen to be the type of questions many women “of a certain age” might have. LISTEN HERE NOW Question from Christine: How to shop for clothes when vertically-challenged (aka, short)? Answers from Holly: If you are 5' 3” tall or less, you are in the Petite category of sizing. This should not come as a surprise to you. You have always needed to make clothes work for you. So, no newsflash there. The only rule you need to know is this: Buy only for fit. Not for fad. And certainly not on the wish that you were taller. Not. Happening. What IS happening is called alterations. Go to your local dry cleaner and make a new BFF with the tailor at your cleaners. Hemming a dress, skirt or pants is not rocket science! If your clothes fit you perfectly, it does not matter how tall you are. Or are not. This may mean one extra step when purchasing something new to wear, but you can do it. And it is worth the minimal cost and time it takes. From Lisa: What are the rules for mixing prints, and can I really do it? Answers from Holly: First, some key points. It takes a lot of confidence to pull off this look. It is advised that this style may be for seasoned and experienced shoppers! Next: but anyone can do it. Holly suggests concocting a highly curated mix for this look. Stay in the same color family, to start. If you are trying this look for the first time, do this: Start with nice jeans as your foundation. Pick a nice jacket or blazer with a pattern. Layer a printed shirt in the same color family - and maybe with a smaller pattern - under the jacket. From afar, you will look well-dressed in a jacket and pants. But closer up, the ‘Wow Factor' pops out from under the jacket. LESS IS MORE, PEOPLE!!! Do not try this look for the first time with flower-patterned pants and a polka-dot top. Most humans cannot pull this look off - and shouldn't try. You CAN try a patterned bag or shoe, or other accessories with prints and patterns, as less risky alternatives. From Sticky Bakery in Toronto: What the heck does “dressing age-appropriate” actually mean? (And yes, this question is from a bakery!! LOVE IT) Answers from Holly: While this topic is something Holly talks about EVERY SINGLE EPISODE, the term ‘age-appropriate' can actually be confusing depending on how old you are and where you are in your life at any age. As an example: Holly is 49 years old. But 49 for one person is not the same for another. If you are 49 years old with no children and are a fashion professional, your style needs may be different than someone else who is 49 and enjoying her days helping to take care of her new grandbaby. Dressing age-appropriate simply means not giving up-putting in some effort and wearing clothes that fit. Not dressing too old or dressing only to be comfortable. It also means not dressing too young. If your clothes are too tight, you are dressing too young. If your clothes are baggy, you are dressing for comfort. THESE ARE MAJOR FASHION CRIMES. We don't care how old you are, your clothes need to fit you well and you need to dress with intention. Meaning: Don't give up. Don't slob-out. Holly encourages people to dress a little out of their comfort zone and be a little unpredictable. Do not dress “safe.” Take a small risk and get yourself in a place that makes people question your age. Because that's what great style is: When people have no idea how old you are. Suggested ways to combat dressing too old: Buy nice jeans that have stretch in them. Not high-waisted, Mom jeans. Not your old 501 Levi's. Shop for jeans that fit well and hold you in. If you need new evening shoes, and you are worried your feet will hurt, take the extra time to shop for style and comfort. Not just comfort. No old lady shoes with padding and low heels, or no heels. You CAN find a beautiful shoe with a lower heel that is still dressy and fun. If you are ready to let your hair color go grey (which is fine), have a plan. Go to your hairstylist and learn how to transition your color. But more importantly, you must still have a hair STYLE. Just because you go grey does not mean that you don't need a current haircut or you stop blowing out your hair. Long, wiry, non-styled hair is not OK. You need to keep it looking sharp. From Linda: How can I dress better without breaking the bank when I work in a corporate job supporting higher-level executives? Answers from Holly: When you shop for brands that fit your body best, you won't have to spend a lot to get a great look. Wearing the best-fitting slacks and dresses will automatically elevate your style. Then add fabulous accessories to pull it all together. Understand what your body needs. If shapewear or support is needed underneath, get fitted for a great bra and wear the shapewear. Keep your shoes in great shape and buy yourself a freaking nice handbag. Shoes and bags do not need to be high-end designer brands, but they do need to look nice and be made of quality materials. Pick a color and style that is not trendy. And honestly, if your bag costs a little bit more, consider it as an investment in your career. You can easily use a nice bag for 10 years! And the secret sauce? Gift yourself with a Jiffy steamer. Crisply ironed clothes go a long way in making your style look elevated. From Maryann at Cape Wishes: What is your favorite bra brand for someone over 50, and I mean, wayyyy over 50? Answers from Holly: Holly has 3 go-to's for bras: Marie-Jo Prima Donna Rigby & Peller A great fitting bra changes your perspective on how you look in clothing. Just because you're a Size A does not mean you opt out of getting fitted for a bra. Period. Exclamation point! If you are extra large, you need to get a minimizer or something that really fits. This means a bra that holds your breast tissue up and on the inside frame of your body - not down, not out, not up to your chin - to define your waist. Y'all know we've talked about this before. Go. Get. Fitted. For. A. Damn. Bra. Anyway, that's it for this week. I cannot thank my new Fashion Besties Lisa, Christine, Linda, Sticky Bakery Toronto and Maryann for writing in! [00:00:20] Keith: so when it gets cold outside everybody thinks that gardening comes to a halt, but some of the most interesting plants, in my opinion, bloom during the wintertime or really show off during the winter so it's an interesting time too. It's also a, really good time to plant plants. [00:00:53] They don't get to go through very little stress through the wintertime. People always think they're going to be too cold. They're sitting out in the nursery in a pot. So if you can get that pot down into the soil, it'll start growing roots. We grow roots throughout the winter, so it's a perfect time to plant, but it's also a good time to go to the nursery and look at plants. [00:01:12] There's a lot of plants that bloom all winter long or throughout the winter Camelia is in the south or are one that just consistently bloom. There are two types of chameleons. There's a succinct that starts blooming in the fall. It's a smaller leaf and a little bit smaller flower, but a more profusely. [00:01:31] And, within this as sank as there are hundreds of varieties of pink, white, red, and lots of different size plants, but sank was start blooming in October, November. They'll bloom October, November, December, January for about two and a half, three months. Depending on the variety of the. [00:01:50] And then japonica is, which is a larger leaf, a chameleon and a larger bloom will pick up. And then they start, they bloom on, into the winter and in spring. So they'll start blooming in December, January, February, March, and finish up at the beginning of April. And chameleons are more like the japonicas are more like. [00:02:11] A large rose flower or a peony flower. It's a flower. That's probably four to five inches across six inches across. And full of ' full of color again, whites, pinks and reds yellow stamens woven through the flower. It's a great cut flower to bring in and use a vase or pot, floating. [00:02:33] But the chameleon is even without flowers on them have just dark shiny green leaves. It's a perfect plant, 12 months out of the year, to fill a space in your garden. So because [00:02:45] Joe: it blooms in the winter, does that mean it doesn't [00:02:47] Keith: bloom in the summer? Exactly. But most of the things that bloom in the winter bloom for a long period of time there aren't as many pollinators out so that they need a few warm days. [00:02:59] To get pollinated so they can produce seed. So of most, all of the winter-blooming stuff will bloom a lot longer than summer blooming. Summer blooming will come into bloom and azaleas are a good example. They come into bloom and they bloom like crazy when pollinators are out and then they go out of bloom and they're done. [00:03:17] So you get two to three, four weeks in blooms and then they wrap it up. Chameleons you really. Two to three months of solid bloom time. And that's from one bloom to peak bloom and then back down to one, but a really good show of flowers for a long period of time. [00:03:34] And the other thing that's interesting about winter plants is a lot of them are very fragrant because they need pollinators to pollinate. They're extremely fragrant to get the few pollinators that are out and about in the wintertime to come to them. Daphne is one of those plants. [00:03:50] It's the, it's a plant that smells It's just, it's got probably the most fragrance of anything that out there. I always tell people it smells like fruit loops and it really truly does when you smell it, it's a fruit loop cereal. If you can bring back that that smell, that's what it smells like. [00:04:05] But Daphne will bloom for a long period of time through the wintertime. And it's a plant that needs are a little tricky in our soil that Clay's heavy and if they get overwatered, They get they'll fail. But once you get one established and it's doing well it'll live, 10 years, 20 years. [00:04:23] I always tell people to plant three of them but don't plant them together, plant them and scatter them around the yard. It's a plant we guarantee for a year, but if you plant three of them, you're probably going to replace one. And, it's there, it's a tough plant to establish, but once it's established, it'll be one of your favorite plants through the wintertime. [00:04:40] Fatsy is another one fatty as a tropical-looking plant, big leafy foliage. And in the wintertime, it blooms with a round sphere up on top of the plant bees, and pollinators go crazy over it, and the winter in the middle of the wintertime. So when we have those warm days in the middle of the winter and either back out and try to forge for nectar pollen they're all over a fat. [00:05:02] And in that same kind of time, the same kind of hellebores is a perennial that blooms for a long period of time. It's an evergreen plant. Super easy to establish and very long-lived. Usually, once you plan a hell of, or you'll have them there for a. It'll seed itself and generate babies. [00:05:20] But it's it again is a great pollinator plant. One of the plants that don't really, it doesn't help much with nectar but helps with Poland and the spring is our conifers and conifers in the wintertime and is a good time to take a look at the garden. You've lost everything that's deciduous, or that dies back to the ground. [00:05:39] You've lost your perineal. And a lot of times a garden can look sparse. It's a good time to look at the bones of a garden and figure out, where are you really need something that's lacking? You can just, you've got a garden that was all perennials and there's really nothing there, at this point in time. [00:05:55] So to go out and put in evergreens in an area like that, like a. Conifers are it's, they're a perfect contrast to a chameleon. You've got the needle, evergreen, you might have chartreuse or golden foliage up against that dark green, big, bold leaves. So it's a great plant to add to the winter landscape red twig and yellow twig dogwoods are another one. [00:06:19] It's deciduous. But it's one that shows off in the wintertime. It's really, it's a, it's an, it's a nice leafy plant through the year, but in the wintertime, you've got really brilliant red foliage or red stems or yellow stems. And if you plant contrasting ground cover underneath it the red twigs with creeping Jenny or something like that under. [00:06:41] Really shows off the plant and then red twigs and snow obviously just makes it really up. A lot of the garden pictures we don't have very often, but when we do it, it really shows off that plan. And another deciduous plant with winter berries, which is a deciduous Holly Holly's is great for pollinators. [00:07:01] They're great for honey bees. And decking the halls exactly objecting the halls and in with Winterberry is actually definitely one of those plants. So it's deciduous. Holly drops all its leaves. And then it's got nothing but red berries all over it. When we can find it, it's always a great plant to decorate with. [00:07:20] You've got to stick that just covered in red berries and nothing else to distract your view. So the winter berries are super plants in the wintertime. In the spring, I didn't say it's almost even an ugly plant or just a leafy green plant and then nondescript. But it surprises you in the fall. [00:07:37] You'll see the berries in there. They're green and they're starting to turn red, but all of a sudden the foliage turns yellow and you can see red berries and then the following two drops. And you've just got a big display of berries on top of the standards, which is really pretty another perennial plant that I always love to plant is Aram, and Aaron's kind of a, it's a, it's an anomaly of a plant. [00:08:01] . The foliage starts coming up. It's a perennial plant and the foliage starts coming up in the fall when everything else is dying back. So you'll have these deeply veined leaves almost like a hostile-looking plant. So you've got this, tropical leafy plant coming out of the ground in the fall when everything else is dying back. [00:08:20] So it's a nice plant to add to a hostile, a hosta garden, or a shade guard. And then in the summertime, when all the other plants are coming up, its foliage is dying back and it'll bloom, and then it produces this Berry stock and the Berry stock stays on top of the plant on, on, on the stem, and just dries onto the stem. [00:08:40] And then usually you'll end up with new plants coming up from those berries. But it's a super neat plant for the winter. And then the other annual plants there, aren't a lot of annual plants for the wintertime. Not, summertime's definitely winning when it comes Daniels, the main annual plant that you put out is our pansies or vials. [00:08:59] And pansies have always had a name of being, the week or the not so strong, but pansies hold up better than anything. They're super easy in the wintertime. They can take the cold, they can handle a fair amount of dry. Viola's or even better than that, a little bit smaller flower. [00:09:16] But they'll give you a ton of color. Looking at the landscape, coming up with where you've got holes and evergreen plants and counter first, and then for any meals in front of those where you've got some holes from losing your summer perennials, and then finishing off when, and when I plant pansy beds, I usually try to plan. [00:09:35] I'll pop up one plan in here or there occasionally. But I usually try to plant decent-sized beds for them. They're inexpensive to go in. They make a serious difference in the winter landscape and they give you a focal point. Gardens are never going to look pristine in the wintertime. [00:09:51] You always feel like you're missing something leaves are gone or plants are dormant. It's not quite as exciting as the spring of. So it kinda distracts your view. It gives you a focal point of nothing but the color and they'll and if you keep them fertilized and keep them watered they will carry your garden through the winter.

Holly Williams spent 25 years as an executive in the advertising and market research industries. As the years went on she found herself paying more and of her salary in taxes, and getting less and less in return. In her search for a better way, she discovered that the wealthiest people in America have access to investment opportunities that most of us don't even know exist. Hidden Investing debunks the myths that most of us are programmed to believe about money and investing. Tyler and Holly's discussion focused on how thinking differently can empower you to build wealth through investing, rather than become a victim of circumstance. Highlights include: The importance of surrounding yourself with abundantly minded people who complement your skills Why Holly excels at connecting with people Why leaders don't want us to be united and/or think critically Financial advice that Holly would give her younger self Why the banks are terrified of crypto currency How getting paid by the government compounds the victim mentality Crypto currencies, breaking rules for the greater good, and financial nuggets of wisdom make for a value-packed episode! PLEASE BE AWARE: THERE IS SOME VIOLENT CONTENT AROUND THE 21 MINUTE MARK It’s been a difficult day for the podcast. All I wanted to do is read out from a book I wrote over 15 years ago, and then deep-dive analyse the chapter afterwards. However, characters from my past and have resurfaced and have taken control of the podcast. Due to being overwhelmed with work and not having the time to rerecord everything, this is the result. Sorry. What should have been an exploration of three chapters that mark our two main characters’ mental preparations for an upcoming invasion (in 1918, of course) has become something that is quite unlistenable. OG Daniel’s Nemesis is still around, and now so is new kid on the block, Ginger. There is at least some analysis that can be occasionally heard. Yes, it’s a surreal book. But the podcast should not be surreal. At least the chapters themselves have not been messed with. And there’s three of them today in this Bumper Pack Family Sized edition. There’s A Goodnight Story from Willam, Ginger Parties, and then William Dreams. I think the entire plot has been revealed in just those chapter titles. Still don’t know what all of this is? XBook is a novel that I wrote when I was in my late teens and early 20’s. Over many, many rewrites it turned from a simple story of aliens invading the Earth at the end of the First World War into a surrealist clash of science fiction and nightmarish dreamscapes. It never got published. Thank God for the Internet, otherwise, there would be no other way to release this story to the masses. 03:19 - Chapter 12: A Goodnight Story From William 10:24 - Chapter 13: Ginger Parties 18:58 - Chapter 14 William Dreams 21:47 - General Notes 32:16 - Psychologist’s Chair What are your thoughts on this and previous chapters? Have you spotted something that I have missed? Tell me your thoughts at danielsnemesis@gmail.com You can also find me on Twitter at @DanielsNemesis, though nothing much happens there.
“With any elite player, we see discipline, clarity and focus...specifically, what is the win? Then, there is a persistence, an energy, and a discipline with absolute accountability!" Today's episode features an interview with Holly Green, who uses brain science to coach executives in some of the world's best companies to be more effective. Do we like her character and what do we think of the two different story lines of Holly and Ralph. Holly is on the spectrum, but is the point that maybe she isn’t? That she has some special gift where a side effect is similar to Autism. Or is this Stephen King’s lazy way of writing a unique character. Book was published in 2018 so he can’t claim ignorance or it being a long time ago. He also had a character like this in “The Dreamcatcher” in which a mentally ill boy had telekenetic powers and was actually an alien. Do we think its Aliens in this story? What is that in the barn? It’s Terry’s clothes, but what do we think the clear goop is on the clothes. Why was it just left out like that? What happened to Jack? He is clearly infected with something from the Outsider. Is the “alien” an infection that passes from person to person? Then what about the Doppelganger theory proposes. This seems to be most likely, but how does it all fit together.
Flowers: One of natures perfect designs. Mother Nature’s perfect little painting. Flowers are the first time we truly notice something of significance. They inspire us and that’s why we have Master Florist Tom Sakas here to discuss the parallels between flowers, floral design and interior design. And since its only a couple weeks from Christmas, I want to talk about using nature, pines and pine cones, holly and berries and flowers that go far and beyond poinsettias. So, this Christmas lets design our homes with flowers. Let’s get inspired by the beauty of nature! It’s the perfect time to bring the beauty of the outside into our homes.
