How Do You Give Yourself Time To Rest Without Losing Productivity or Falling Behind? Now I know what you're thinking… "I took time off, now I'm behind." How do you take a day away, and not feel behind? The math doesn't math. Let's flip that. Taking time off doesn't set you back—it sets you up. If you keep doing more, you are going to keep being busy. You feel like you cannot rest, but at the same time, you cannot afford not to. There's a misconception that rest means you stop and do nothing. That's not it. Rest means actively filling up your tank. What nourishes you? For me, it's standing barefoot in the sunshine, breathing fresh air, and listening to my kids laugh. These moments are FREE and available NOW. It's not when you get to a certain level of success in your business. It's also for while you are on your way there. Resting does not put you behind, it better positions you to do what you've been called to do. And now you can do it from a place of poise and restoration. You're no longer running on empty in any or all of the areas of your life.0:01:47 - The deeper benefits of rest0:06:26 - Rest as a strategic advantage0:09:02 - Maintaining work-life balance with a day of rest0:14:26 - Defining your day of rest0:19:26 - Overcoming guilt and fear of rest0:22:26 - How to take rest without falling behind0:25:26 - 3 small steps to rest without guilt today➡️ Grab all the links and resources mentioned in this episode on the blog here!https://www.megankachigan.com/how-to-relax-without-reducing-rest-to-productivityFREE RESOURCE:Is your copy not converting? A couple of weeks ago, a client of mine said to me, "I know I need to relax to heal, but I can't relax; literally, I can't sit still. If I do, I feel like I'm going to jump out of my skin."When he said this, I realized that he was not the only client who had told me this before. Many of my clients feel that relaxing is very difficult, all for different reasons and different life stages. Maybe you're a mom with too many things to do. Or you're a business owner with an endless list of tasks to complete. Or you're a teacher and father who juggles taking his kids to school and showing up to work without forgetting to eat breakfast. When you take a moment to sit still, relax, do nothing - it's uncomfortable. Your body wants to get up and move. Basically, you don't feel relaxed when you're "relaxing." This is what happens when you have nervous system dysregulation. How do you regulate your nervous system when it's not regulating on its own? And if you're currently experiencing this, how DO you relax?Today, I'm going to dive into two paradigms to help you explore the nature of relaxing and 5 hacks to help you relax and get nervous system regulation with greater ease - no matter what's going on in your life.LINKS FROM THE SHOW:If this podcast episode made positively impacted you, please leave a Rating and Review for the podcast. Welcome to our weekly segment, "Three Minute Thursday" where host Pooja Mottl highlights a piece of wisdom she has come across from her own readings, or shares an inspirational anecdote or insight that can help you lead a more calm and rooted life.--"The purpose of life is a life of purpose” concludes author Robbin Sharma (Monk Who Sold His Ferrari). But what is your purpose? If you don't know, you're no alone. Most people fly through life existing but never living, going through the motions, doing what they think they're supposed to be doing but never really taking the time to figure out if that aligns with what truly energizes and fulfills them.If you want to know one thing about your purpose, its about being selfless. Living and doing things that go beyond your individual gain. But to get to the heart of your unique purpose, you'll have to put in the effort. You'll have to take time out life to find it. And one thing that helps is silence. Often, when we get rid of the noise, the conversations, the technology, and all the stimulations of the material world, our mind calms down just enough for it to reveal to us what it is that we're here on this planet for. What is it that our talents and capabilities are meant to work on? What is it that energizes us, uplifts us and fills us with joy? Often times, we can't get these answers if we keep ourselves on the treadmill of life and reaching for distractions. What we need to do is find quiet. Make that time for quiet and it will help you find your purpose. Put it in your calendar if you need to. Turn off your phone – shut down your computer – sit alone with your thoughts. Calm your mind and give it the space it needs to reveal to you what it is that you're here to selflessly do. --If you want to read more of my essays on living calm and free, please sign up to my newsletter by following me on LinkedIn or signing up to at our new website at calmandfreepodcast.com. Welcome to our weekly segment, "Three Minute Thursday" where host Pooja Mottl highlights a piece of wisdom she has come across from her own readings, or shares an inspirational anecdote or insight that can help you lead a more calm and rooted life.--In a fast-changing world, news about success runs rampant. It seems society wants to sell us it's own version of success and the fact is, most of us have bought into it.If you're connected to the internet, news about people achieving great wealth, respect or fame, grab your attention in the form of posts, tweets, headlines, and alerts. This kind of sensational success is more alluring and seemingly more accessible, than ever before in human history. From unicorn founders to voyages into space, stories about success mesmerize us and seduce us into wanting it, and the herd mentality justifies this narrative and keeps it alive. There's nothing wrong with working hard for financial freedom and recognition from our peers – but what we've collectively done as a society…is taken success to a dangerous level in the context of our mental wellbeing.Dangerous, because when we make the end game all about success – the fortune, the notoriety, the achievements - we make the biggest sacrifice: we give up our peace of mind.See, when we're driven by the promise that success will make our lives better, as the news and our culture want us to believe, we stop feeling grateful for what we have right now, a scientifically proven way to make our minds unhappy. And in the competitive race for success, we feel inadequate until me make it, insignificant if we never do, and unsatisfied when we arrive, because hitting one benchmark only begins the chase for yet another. To counter these emotions, we numb ourselves with food, with drugs, with shopping, with alcohol, with social media and by the dopamine hit that comes from just the idea that success can happen to me… if I just keep plugging away. So today I'd like to offer you this advice with love and compassion – I want you to ask yourself: is my definition of success bringing me peace of mind at the end of my day? Does it give me energy or does it take it from me? Does my definition of success help me sleep well at night? Does it make me the best colleague I can be? The best parent I can be? These are the questions you must ask yourself to ensure a calm mind, which by the way, is the foundation necessary to unleash the genius within you.In the coming days, I will be releasing a full length video to expand on the process I use, personally, to define success in a way that brings me inner peace. It has been inspired by the likes of legendary coach John Wooden, the work of essayist and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson and the philosophy inherent in the Bhagavad Gita, the storied ancient Indian poem imbibed with time-honored wisdom . It will be both at my YouTube channel and on my social media channels. More fearful, less trusting. Less joyful, more lonely. More diseased, less healthy. More anxious, less at peace. But the fact is, we're not different than we entered this world as tiny, beautiful babies – we're no less loved, we're no less valid. It's just the norms of society that change the very way we think about ourselves as adults – and it's a racket.Persian Poet Rumi so eloquently advised to: “Look inside yourself, everything that you want you already are.”We are already enough – we don't need to overwork ourselves to burnout and needlessly compare and compete. We are worthy just as we are.I'll leave you to contemplate on this most profound piece of wisdom and encourage you to watch the entire video on YouTube.I wonder what our world would be like if everyone - especially tech moguls, founders, investors and alike - took this message to heart and put a brake on the never-ending chase – would society be less polarized? Would we be individually and collectively happier and healthier? If you want to read more of my essays on living calm and free, please sign up to my newsletter by following me on LinkedIn or signing up to at our new website at calmandfreepodcast.com. Welcome to "3 Minute Thursday" where Pooja shares a weekly nugget of wisdom in just a few minutes. If you enjoy these short episodes please text or email them to someone you love and subscribe!--Today I wanted to share with you the last words of Steve Jobs prior to his death. I hope they can help you, too, craft a more examined life.I reached the pinnacle of success in the business world. In some others' eyes, my life is the epitome of success. However, aside from work, I have little joy. In the end, my wealth is only a fact of life that I am accustomed to. At this moment, lying on my bed and recalling my life, I realize that all the recognition and wealth that I took so much pride in have paled and become meaningless in the face of my death.Material things lost can be found or replaced. But there is one thing that can never be found when it's lost – Life. Whichever stage in life you are in right now, with time, you will face the day when the curtain comes down.Treasure love for your family, love for your spouse, love for your friends. Treat yourself well and cherish others. As we grow older, and hopefully wiser, we realize that a $300 or a $30 watch both tell the same time. You will realize that your true inner happiness does not come from the material things of this world.Don't educate your children to be rich. Educate them to be happy. So when they grow up they will know the value of things and not the price. Eat your food as your medicine, otherwise you have to eat medicine as your food. There is a big difference between a human being and being human. Only a few really understand it. You are loved when you are born. You will be loved when you die. In between, you have to manage! The six best doctors in the world are sunlight, rest, exercise, diet, self-confidence and friends. Maintain them in all stages and enjoy a healthy life. Welcome to "3 Minute Thursday" (#ThreeMinuteThursday) where Pooja shares a weekly nugget of wisdom in just a few minutes. --I'd like to honor and celebrate Thich Nhat Hanh, the Vietamese Buddhist monk who passed away last week. Many of you have been listening for a while, know that much of my work and my own inner shifts have been inspired by the work of Nhat Hanh (lovingly known as Thay). When I first got a hold of his tiny book, How to Relax, for under $10 dollars at my local bookstore, I had little clue what mindfulness was all about. I picked up the book only because it seemed like a "mindfulness for dummies" type book. But what I found inside the pages was beyond belief, and quiet literally changed my life. Thich Nhat Hanh was one of those special beings – a genius at not only mastering the teachings of the ancients for himself but mastering the art conveying these teachings to beginners. I encourage everyone to pick up this book and others:Peace is Every StepHow to RelaxYou are HerePlum Village: https://plumvillage.org/about/thich-nhat-hanh/---If you want to read more of my essays on living calm and free, please sign up to my newsletter by following me on LinkedIn.--For more from Host Pooja Mottl: www.PoojaMottl.comPodcast Producer: www.Go-ToProductions.comTwitter: @PoojaMottlInstagram: @TheCalmandFreePodcast and @PoojaMottl LinkedIn: @PoojaMottlSpecial Thanks : Kris Kosach of the TPR Podcast for lending her VO for our Podcast Intro.Jessica Panian for her help with our graphic design. Welcome back as we explore the human superpower of rest. In this episode we're going to dive into the idea of having a lazy day with nothing to do but rest. Now you will recall rest isn't sleep. Rest is our ability to power down the mind, get out of our analytical right brain, find stillness, and unplug our mind from the grind. Just like we need to rest our bodies, we need to rest our minds. A great way to rest our minds is by allowing time to unfold without a schedule or checking your watch. Have you ever lived just one lazy day without having anything planned? Here's how Thich Nhat Hanh beautifully describes a lazy day from his book How to Relax:“Most of us have very scheduled lives and very full calendars. But do we have enough lazy days in our calendar? A lazy day is a day for us to be without any scheduled activities. We just let the day unfold naturally, timelessly. On this day we have a chance to reestablish the balance in ourselves. When we have unscheduled time, we tend to get bored or cast about for something to do. A lazy day is a chance to train ourselves not to be afraid of doing nothing. You might think that not doing anything is a waste of time. But that's not true. Your time is first of all for you to be – to be alive, to be peace.”--For more from Host Pooja Mottl: www.PoojaMottl.comPodcast Producer: www.Go-ToProductions.comTwitter: @PoojaMottlInstagram: @TheCalmandFreePodcast and @PoojaMottl LinkedIn: @PoojaMottlSpecial Thanks to Kris Kosach of the TPR Podcast for lending her VO for our Podcast Intro!
In this episode we'll get into why rest is an instinctual, innate part of being human. Animals naturally rest - lions spend the majority of their days lying around and resting. And when an animal is wounded, they look for a very quiet place and stay there for many days, letting their body heal itself. They don't think about their next meal. They fast. Animals have the wisdom of stopping and resting. We humans also have this innate capacity to rest, but we've been conditioned to go-go-go, and this tendency continues to increase as the pace of technology increases. So in order to get back to our instinctual primitive behavior of rest, we need to reset ourselves. We need to first use reason and intellectualize why rest is natural, which we are doing right now, and second we need to experience it on a soulful level by actually doing it more. And its not just the body that needs rest. When animals instinctually rest their bodies to heal, they are also resting their minds. They're not thinking of their next meal or anything else. They've simply checked-out.We know the body needs rest because we can see signs or we can feel that we're tired or sore. But even though the mind doesn't raise flags in the same way, it needs rest to heal too. As Nhat Hanh discusses it, in our consciousness there are wounds and sores, fogginess and burnout – all from the thoughts, the memories, and so on. Our consciousness also needs to rest in order to restore itself, just like our body. He writes the following in his book, “How to Relax”: “When we get a cut on our finger we don't have to do anything except to clean it and to allow it the time to heal, because our body knows how to heal itself. The same thing is true with our consciousness; our consciousness knows how to heal itself if we know how to allow it to do so. “Resting the mind doesn't have to come solely through meditation and mindful breathing. You can rest the mind by unplugging from the grind for a few minutes, hours, or a few days or by taking a walk and staying present with the nature around you, or by spending time with someone you love – immersed in that time without distraction. Or by reading a book or by simply getting out of your left brain, the side of your brain that involves facts, linear thinking and logic, and more into your right brain which is connected to intuitive thinking, rhythm, imagination and art.In the end, what we're talking about here is that rest is inherent and inborn. We're set up naturally to rest more, we now just have to relearn how to make it manifest and prioritize it in our lives. Don't be afraid or embarrassed to just take a pillow and lie down for a few minute, or roll up your jacket and take a rest on the train or in the Uber. Rest is you. Rest is your birthright. Rest is your superpower.Reference Links:https://www.lionsroar.com/resting-in-the-river/--For more from Host Pooja Mottl: www.PoojaMottl.comPodcast Producer: www.Go-ToProductions.comTwitter: @PoojaMottlInstagram: @TheCalmandFreePodcast and @PoojaMottl LinkedIn: @PoojaMottlSpecial Thanks to Kris Kosach of the TPR Podcast for lending her VO for our Podcast Intro!
Welcome back to the podcast! This week I am coming to you from my office on the Gold Coast, but not for long! This week I am off to New Zealand for two weeks which is so exciting as I haven't visited home for a long time due to Covid!Today I wanted to talk about just how important it is as a leader to take time off, to reset, rest and recharge to become more productive and be at the peak of your performance! I know it sounds counterintuitive that going on holiday can make you more money and more productivity, but it really can!If you are new to business, it can feel like you are bogged down and can't take a break - this is exactly when you need to take a break. The whole reason you started your business was so you can have more time and freedom, right? Before COVID, I was taking long breaks frequently. From 4-6 weeks at a time and Christmas breaks and flying places for extended weekends. Since COVID, I found that I was getting very bored and bogged down at home, which is the number one cause for unproductivity. When you are fresh, your well-being is at its peak, and you can perform at a higher level! When you break up your day-to-day work life, you will find that you will enjoy what you do when you get back to your business! If you are a person working 50, 60, 70 hours per week, perhaps you can't turn your emails off on the weekend - you need to tune out so you can recharge. The chance to escape your daily routine will revitalise and reset your mind so you can be a better leader. Not yet convinced you can or should take a break? Let's go through the top points as to why it will benefit your business:1.Having a holiday can reduce stress; When you take a break, it can reduce your stress. It allows you to take time away from routine and responsibilities. You go somewhere completely new so that you can switch off your regular thoughts and relax! Once your stress levels come down and you return to your routine - you will be a renewed human who loves what they do.2. There are physical health benefits; Who said Cosmos on the beach isn't good for you? Once you begin to relax and loosen all tensions in your body, you will find that your thought process and state of mind will be clearer when you return to work. Too much stress can lead to a whole range of health issues that will catch up with you. Overeating, sitting for too long, lack inactivity can all lead to poor physical health, getaway and reset your mind to produce peak physical health!3.Your brain will thank you! Mentally, tuning out of your day-to-day life will do you a world of good. When you have the enormous burden of a business, a team, clients, home life, it can be overwhelming at times, which can rapidly decrease your productivity. Once you slow down on your holiday, your creativity comes back because you have the mental capacity to hold onto it!You can see why turning off does more good than bad. It will help you to reconnect with yourself and align your priorities. At the end of the day, you aren't built to work yourself to the bone, and you only have one life!4.When you have something to look forward to, life is better! You are so much more satisfied with your life. You feel happy and content. Taking regular holidays can help to create a healthy work/life balance that makes you happy! It is an excellent chance to spend time with the ones you love and reflect on your wonderful life. You did not start a business, so you can work your butt off 1000 hours a week. You started your business so you could have more freedom and time with those who you love. You don't want to be working for the worst boss you have ever had, yourself! Be kind to yourself and add holidays into your schedule.5.Time off = increased creativity! As a business owner, you are the visionary! There is no other person in your business to be the visionary you can be! You are in the driver's seat, so you can see where it can all go wrong if you don't feel inspired? Taking a holiday will give you the time to read the books you want to read, relax in a beautiful environment as well as repair your brain to make space to scale! So, you're convinced that it is time for a holiday? Now, how exactly do we get this holiday on track? You need to systemise your law firm so that you can step away and know it is in safe hands! When you have reliable systems in place for your business, when you are absent - there is no need to worry! Your staff and yourself will know exactly what needs to be done, where, when, and how.If you have the certainty that things are still going to be getting done as if you were there, then you can easily step away and go on holiday. This may mean that you jump online to give your staff tasks for an hour a day while you are on holiday or to approve tasks to ensure you don't come home to an inbox of emails. To be engaged with your family and loved ones is so important. It doesn't need to be a whole week or more, but spare yourself two nights in a road trip distance to appreciate the states we live in and get inspired!I challenge you to lock something in today for the future holiday you are going on. Have your downtime so that you can be the best business owner possible! DM me where you are off to, I would love to know! I will be sharing my New Zealand trip on my Instagram, so jump on over and maybe even get some inspo for your upcoming holiday! In 30 years there has been a revolution in the teaching of meditation and in personal mind control which has been brought about by many new methods and devices. One of the first was the Mind Mirror, and the inventor’s book that accompanied it called “The Awakened Mind”. My guest today is Judith Pennington who makes use of that technology … Read more about this episode...
