But what is your purpose? If you don't know, you're no alone. Most people fly through life existing but never living, going through the motions, doing what they think they're supposed to be doing but never really taking the time to figure out if that aligns with what truly energizes and fulfills them.If you want to know one thing about your purpose, its about being selfless. Living and doing things that go beyond your individual gain. But to get to the heart of your unique purpose, you'll have to put in the effort. You'll have to take time out life to find it. And one thing that helps is silence. Often, when we get rid of the noise, the conversations, the technology, and all the stimulations of the material world, our mind calms down just enough for it to reveal to us what it is that we're here on this planet for. What is it that our talents and capabilities are meant to work on? What is it that energizes us, uplifts us and fills us with joy? Often times, we can't get these answers if we keep ourselves on the treadmill of life and reaching for distractions. What we need to do is find quiet. Make that time for quiet and it will help you find your purpose. Put it in your calendar if you need to. Turn off your phone – shut down your computer – sit alone with your thoughts. Calm your mind and give it the space it needs to reveal to you what it is that you're here to selflessly do. --If you want to read more of my essays on living calm and free, please sign up to my newsletter by following me on LinkedIn or signing up to at our new website at calmandfreepodcast.com. Welcome to our weekly segment, "Three Minute Thursday"  where host Pooja Mottl highlights a piece of wisdom she has come across from her own readings, or shares an inspirational anecdote or insight that can help you lead a more calm and rooted life.--In a fast-changing world, news about success runs rampant. It seems society wants to sell us it's own version of success and the fact is, most of us have bought into it.If you're connected to the internet, news about people achieving great wealth, respect or fame, grab your attention in the form of posts, tweets, headlines, and alerts. This kind of sensational success is more alluring and seemingly more accessible, than ever before in human history. From unicorn founders to voyages into space, stories about success mesmerize us and seduce us into wanting it, and the herd mentality justifies this narrative and keeps it alive. There's nothing wrong with working hard for financial freedom and recognition from our peers – but what we've collectively done as a society…is taken success to a dangerous level in the context of our mental wellbeing.Dangerous, because when we make the end game all about success – the fortune, the notoriety, the achievements - we make the biggest sacrifice: we give up our peace of mind.See, when we're driven by the promise that success will make our lives better, as the news and our culture want us to believe, we stop feeling grateful for what we have right now, a scientifically proven way to make our minds unhappy. And in the competitive race for success, we feel inadequate until me make it, insignificant if we never do, and unsatisfied when we arrive, because hitting one benchmark only begins the chase for yet another. To counter these emotions, we numb ourselves with food, with drugs, with shopping, with alcohol, with social media and by the dopamine hit that comes from just the idea that success can happen to me… if I just keep plugging away. So today I'd like to offer you this advice with love and compassion – I want you to ask yourself: is my definition of success bringing me peace of mind at the end of my day? Does it give me energy or does it take it from me? Does my definition of success help me sleep well at night? Does it make me the best colleague I can be? The best parent I can be? These are the questions you must ask yourself to ensure a calm mind, which by the way, is the foundation necessary to unleash the genius within you.In the coming days, I will be releasing a full length video to expand on the process I use, personally, to define success in a way that brings me inner peace. It has been inspired by the likes of legendary coach John Wooden, the work of essayist and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson and the philosophy inherent in the Bhagavad Gita, the storied ancient Indian poem imbibed with time-honored wisdom . It will be both at my YouTube channel and on my social media channels. I truly hope these messages resonate with you and can add real value to your life.--If you want to read more of my essays on living calm and free, please sign up to my newsletter by following me on LinkedIn or signing up to at our new website at calmandfreepodcast.com. Jeff and Erik wanted to hear more about not only his athletic accomplishments (too many for one podcast!) but to hear about how he got to this place of focus in his life. Charlie Engle is many things: a writer, runner, recovering addict and speaker. He's run across the Sahara Desert, the Amazon, swum with crocodiles and summited ice covered volcanoes, but according to Charlie his greatest challenge has been becoming sober. He has stayed clean since 1992 and has channeled his addictive nature into his passion to run and what he calls “positive, purpose-driven pursuits.” He discusses the mental clarity and resolve it takes to run such long distances and not avoid pain but to tap into it. He also talks about the sheer logistics and planning that go into endeavors like the ones he takes on and the folks in his life who help make it all possible - like his wife who works tirelessly on logistics behind the scenes. In 2016, he wrote a memoir titled, “The Running Man” to illuminate the lessons he's learned in his struggles and his triumphs.  To learn more and keep up to date on Charlie's adventures by signing up for his newsletter go to his website.Follow Charlie on Facebook: @charlieengleruns, Instagram & Twitter: @charlieengle  (...) “The world needs new lenses to understand growth and how humans and societies can thrive.” ~ Luis Gallardo Follow the World Happiness Foundation and the World Happiness Fest here:Website: https://worldhappiness.foundation/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/worldhappinessfoundation/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/worldhappinessfestLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/worldhappiness-foundation/Twitter: https://twitter.com/worldhappinessfYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8CGp4Y7TyGKKrT35fkXg5A

Our guest today is Dr. Andrew harman, a Professor of Virology and Immunology at the University of Sydney School of Medicine and an ordained Buddhist who has much insight on how Buddhist practices and philosophy can help us deal with change, restlessness and uncertainty in our fast moving world. He shares how acceptance of your reality can help bring about calm. Dr. Harman and Pooja talk extensively about how we may need to reset our definition of "happiness" – instead of desperately seeking out happiness through exciting, impermanent experiences, things, people or moments, we might instead think of happiness as a state of equanimity which is defined as mental calmness, composure, and evenness of temper. Equanimity, according to Dr Harman, comes from doing the inner work and obtaining wisdom and insight from it.In other words, from a Buddhist standpoint, real happiness is maintaining a state of inner peace no matter what is happening in the outside world. In this very special discussion, Dr. Harman also answers how science and Buddhism go hand in hand, why Vipassana mediation may not work for some, and how Albert Einstein may be the best role model to date in helping us see how spirituality or religion can add value along with science in helping us live with more grace, calm, rootedness, and compassion.--Bio:Andrew Harman is a Professor of Virology and Immunology at the University of Sydney School of Medicine where he is a level 3 supervisor in the theme of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation. He is a member of the Partnerships Advisory Group and the chair of the High School Liaisons working group. He is also the Deputy Director of the Centre for Virus Research at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research.Andrew has been working at the Westhead Health Precinct since completing his PhD at the University of Cambridge in 2002. He has extensive collaborations with surgeons at Westmead and other Western Sydney Hospitals who provide his research group with a large range of human tissues with which he conducts all his research. He leads two research groups at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research, in the Centre for Virus Research and Centre for Immunology and Allergy Research. These groups investigate sexual transmission of HIV and Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, such as Crohn's Disease.Andrew's technological expertise lies in the ability to isolate functionally intact immune cells from human tissue and to visualize immune cells within these tissues. He is an expert in characterizing human tissue immune cells using high parameter single cell technologies including flow cytometry, imaging mass cytometry and RNA sequencing. Andrew also has access to clinically relevant HIV transmission strains derived from infected individuals in sub-Saharan Africa and has developed RNAscope technology to visualise these HIV strains interacting with target cells within 30 minutes of exposure.--Follow  Professor Harman:https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrew-harman-00a8b3123/https://www.sydney.edu.au/medicine-health/about/our-people/academic-staff/andrew-harman.html#collapseprofileteaching Follow  & Attend the World Happiness Fest:https://worldhappiness.foundation/fest/about/--More on this Podcast: https://www.calmandfreepodcast.com/For more from Host Pooja Mottl:  https://www.poojamottl.com/Podcast Producer: https://www.go-toproductions.com/Twitter @PoojaMottl: https://twitter.com/poojamottlInstagram: @TheCalmandFreePodcast https://www.instagram.com/thecalmandfreepodcast/and @PoojaMottl https://www.instagram.com/poojamottl/LinkedIn: @PoojaMottl  https://www.linkedin.com/in/poojamottl/--Special Thanks : Kris Kosach of the TPR Podcast for lending her VO for our Podcast Intro: https://www.sites.google.com/view/textproserocknroll/homeJessica Panian https://www.jessicapanian.com/ for her help with our graphic design: https://www.jessicapanian.com/ (...) “The world needs new lenses to understand growth and how humans and societies can thrive.” ~ Luis Gallardo Follow the World Happiness Foundation and the World Happiness Fest here:Website: https://worldhappiness.foundation/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/worldhappinessfoundation/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/worldhappinessfestLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/worldhappiness-foundation/Twitter: https://twitter.com/worldhappinessfYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8CGp4Y7TyGKKrT35fkXg5ASHOW CONTRIBUTORS

In this special exchange, Pooja and Professor Negi discuss the central tenants and urgency of compassion, a focus of His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. Dr. Negi expands on how although humans have made tremendous progress from an outward, material standpoint, we have neglected to develop the core inner values that lead to contentment and inner peace. In other words, we have been focused on educating the mind, while forgetting to educate the heart. Dr. Negi shares how compassion is linked to the idea of safety and security in a world with so much diverse thought, biases, and differing groups of people. It is in this kind of world, especially, that people need to feel safe. He shares that at the heart of compassion is a sense of meaningful, tender connection with each other, and that creates a sense of security and trust, happiness and love.Pooja and Dr. Negi also uncover the links between traditional Tibetan Buddhist mind training practices called "Lojong", which systematically look within, closely observing what triggers our emotions. This scientific examination parallels some of the main practices and strategies used in CBT, originating in the 1960's by Dr. Aaron Beck, globally recognized as the father of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and one of the world's leading researchers in psychopathology.--LOBSANG TENZIN NEGI, Ph.D. is the co-founder and Executive Director of the Center for Contemplative Science and Compassion-Based Ethics at Emory University, formerly the Emory-Tibet Partnership. Prof. Negi is also a Professor of Pedagogy in Emory University's Department of Religion and the founder and spiritual director of Drepung Loseling Monastery, Inc., in Atlanta, GA. Over the past two decades, Prof. Negi has been a pioneer of compassion training programs for adults and children and he has contributed to the development and burgeoning of compassion science through his research initiatives and collaborations. Through his center, Prof. Negi has developed and now oversees three programs, which are dedicated to expanding compassion and engaging in research. In 2004, Prof. Negi developed CBCT® (Cognitively-Based Compassion Training), a secularized contemplative program based on Tibetan Buddhist mind training practices that deliberately and systematically works to cultivate compassion. He also oversees SEE Learning™ (Social, Emotional and Ethical Learning), a program that develops and implements curricula for kindergarten through university level education for the education of heart and mind. The third program of the center is the Emory-Tibet Science Initiative, a program he developed, at the invitation of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, to develop and implement a comprehensive modern science curriculum specifically for Tibetan monastics.  Prof. Negi was born in Kinnaur, a remote Himalayan region adjoining Tibet. A former monk of 27 years, he began his monastic training at The Institute of Buddhist Dialectics in Dharamasala, India and continued his education at Drepung Loseling Monastery in south India, where in 1994 he received the Geshe Lharampa degree. Prof. Negi completed his Ph.D. at Emory University in 1999; his interdisciplinary dissertation centered on traditional Buddhist and contemporary Western approaches to emotions and their impact on wellness. His current research focuses on the complementarity of modern science and contemplative practice.--Follow  Dr. Negi's work:http://www.tibet.emory.eduhttp://www.drepung.orghttps://compassion.emory.edu/https://seelearning.emory.edu/node/5https://compassionshift.emory.edu/ Follow  & Attend the World Happiness Fest:https://worldhappiness.foundation/fest/about/--More on this Podcast: https://www.calmandfreepodcast.com/For more from Host Pooja Mottl:  https://www.poojamottl.com/Podcast Producer: https://www.go-toproductions.com/Twitter @PoojaMottl: https://twitter.com/poojamottlInstagram: @TheCalmandFreePodcast https://www.instagram.com/thecalmandfreepodcast/and @PoojaMottl https://www.instagram.com/poojamottl/LinkedIn: @PoojaMottl  https://www.linkedin.com/in/poojamottl/--Special Thanks : Kris Kosach of the TPR Podcast for lending her VO for our Podcast Intro: https://www.sites.google.com/view/textproserocknroll/homeJessica Panian https://www.jessicapanian.com/ for her help with our graphic design: https://www.jessicapanian.com/ (...) “The world needs new lenses to understand growth and how humans and societies can thrive.” ~ Luis Gallardo Follow the World Happiness Foundation and the World Happiness Fest here:Website: https://worldhappiness.foundation/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/worldhappinessfoundation/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/worldhappinessfestLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/worldhappiness-foundation/Twitter: https://twitter.com/worldhappinessfYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8CGp4Y7TyGKKrT35fkXg5A

— DEDICATION: To LOVE — Because that's all there is. In the end, you realize that to find the ultimate peace, the entire journey is about discovering ourselves, who we are meant to be in this world, how to be more loving, kind and compassionate toward ourselves and others. We learn the interconnectedness of all things and the only way to this place is to honor our authentic selves, to be okay with our imperfections and to have the courage to heal and love anyway. Sometimes the journey is arduous, but unless we are willing to find our way back to wholeness, life will always seem disconnected and fractured. It is only in learning to slow down, lean into healing and surrender ourselves entirely, that we find our true strength, self-love, and the deep connection we all seek.     Valeria Teles interviews Zahra Karsan  — the author of “ 6 Weeks to Happy: The Ultimate Roadmap To Retrain Your Brain For Better Health, Greater Abundance, and Long Lasting Happiness.”   Certified in Mindset Coaching and Neuroscience, Zahra Karsan is an inspirational public speaker as well as a trusted personal Success Coach to dozens of global executives.   Voted by Yahoo Finance as a Top 10 Success Coach, she is the best-selling author of 6 Weeks to Happy and the creator of the R.E.W.I.R.E System™, a groundbreaking methodology that retrains your brain for greater happiness, health, wealth and success. Welcome to episode four of The Way Out Is In: The Zen Art of Living, a podcast series mirroring Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh's deep teachings of Buddhist philosophy: a simple yet profound methodology for dealing with our suffering, and for creating more happiness and joy in our lives. In this episode, presenters Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and lay Buddhist practitioner and journalist Jo Confino are joined by special guest Zen Buddhist nun Sister True Dedication (Sister Hien Nghiem). Together, they address contemporary environmental crises and Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh's ethical framework of living, to help us reach a better future – as presented in his new book, Zen and the Art of Saving the Planet. The three further discuss Buddhist insights into the many existential crises faced by the global community; practical ways people can become empowered; not being overwhelmed by the suffering in the world, and how to work with our emotions to take positive action. Jo recollects interviewing Christiana Figueres, the architect of the Paris Climate Agreement, including on how the practice of mindfulness was instrumental in her achievements, and the importance of deep listening in global talks. Brother Phap Huu explains the insight of interbeing; the practice of gratitude; and shares about walking the (sustainability) talk in Plum Village; the ‘no car days', shifting to veganism during a 800-people retreat, and starting a happy farm to become more self-sufficient and in touch with the Earth as a community of practitioners.Sister True Dedication talks about editing Thich Nhat Hanh's new book, Zen and the Art of Saving the Planet; the hardest part of working on a book; Thay's involvement in the environmental movement since the early 1970s, as a pioneer of deep ecology; the importance of joy and vitality for facing hard times; falling in love with the Earth; accessing the insight of interbeing in our daily lives, and having fulfilled present moments; finding peace and equanimity in a suffering world; practicing deep truth; taking care of our despair. Finally, the sister ends the episode with a guided meditation.-------The podcast is co-produced by the Plum Village App and Global Optimism with support from the Thich Nhat Hanh Foundation.-------Zen and the Art of Saving the PlanetDeep ecologySpiritual ecologySister Chan KhongThe World We Have: A Buddhist Approach to Peace and EcologyOther key books by Thich Nhat HanhAlfred HasslerThe Diamond SutraChristiana FigueresJo Confino interviews Christina FigueresParis Climate AgreementBlue Cliff MonasteryHappy FarmA koan(...) “The world needs new lenses to understand growth and how humans and societies can thrive.” ~ Luis Gallardo Follow the World Happiness Foundation and the World Happiness Fest here:Website: https://worldhappiness.foundation/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/worldhappinessfoundation/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/worldhappinessfestLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/worldhappiness-foundation/Twitter: https://twitter.com/worldhappinessfYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8CGp4Y7TyGKKrT35fkXg5A

Understanding peace and happiness, we realize that they are an integral part of each other. When we are happy, we are in peace. Or when we are in peace, we are in happiness. We also know from quantum physics that peace is the highest vibration of our energy, which has a hertz of 600 per second vibration, and beyond 700 hertz per second vibration is enlightenment, where we can be totally free from mental or physical effect from both inner and outer environments. We all do not wish to be enlightened but look for easier ways in life to be happy and in peace. However, there's no quick fix for achieving peace or happiness. We need to free ourselves from any kind of attachment, be it emotional or material, and, we are very much in both of them.  (...) “The world needs new lenses to understand growth and how humans and societies can thrive.” ~ Luis Gallardo Follow the World Happiness Foundation and the World Happiness Fest here:Website: https://worldhappiness.foundation/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/worldhappinessfoundation/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/worldhappinessfestLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/worldhappiness-foundation/Twitter: https://twitter.com/worldhappinessfYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8CGp4Y7TyGKKrT35fkXg5A

One of my favorite examples towards a Wellbeing Economy is Wales. Because they not only developed seven wellbeing goals, but they really thought a lot about how does this translate into a different form of governance and way of working? So they have these five principles for how they want to work together. And one is taking a long-term perspective? So not just constantly thinking about the short-term crises, but really the long term goals. Focusing on prevention? So as we were saying earlier, how do we prevent the economic, or environmental, or social crises from starting in the first place? By getting the economy to do more of the heavy lifting in the first place. How do we support greater integration, breaking down silos, and supporting more collaboration. Not only across governments agencies, but with society at large. And fostering and supporting greater engagement by people. And with these principles in mind, they realized that that needed to also translate into how they were measuring their wellbeing goals. So I love that they put a big emphasis here on effective communication. So they wanted to make sure that any indicator that was chosen could be immediately grasped the public. That they could intuitively understand why that indicator related to one of the goals or multiple goals that they have identified is important for their society.(...) “The world needs new lenses to understand growth and how humans and societies can thrive.” ~ Luis Gallardo Follow the World Happiness Foundation and the World Happiness Fest here:Website: https://worldhappiness.foundation/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/worldhappinessfoundation/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/worldhappinessfestLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/worldhappiness-foundation/Twitter: https://twitter.com/worldhappinessfYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8CGp4Y7TyGKKrT35fkXg5A

Quantum theory, pretty much everyone has heard about it, at least anyone who is interested in novel thinking of all kinds, but a quantum theory in its traditional form, which is microcosmic quantum theory is now about a hundred years old. And for a long time, this was just a very fascinating subject for physicists and chemists, and people in the hard sciences. Especially, I would say that the atom model created by Niels Bohr in 1913 with the whole idea that there are such things as quantum leaps when it comes to the orbits of electrons revolving around the nucleus of an atom. That whole concept is really a little bit of a miracle. It's something that we really can't grasp from our everyday experience of how reality works. In other words, there is a shift ... Oh, sorry. There is a shift, an instantaneous shift between the energy levels of electrons that takes place under certain conditions inside the electron. Now, since that time, since the initial pioneers worked with microcosmic quantum theory, it's broadened its appeal to people much far outside of the actual hard sciences where it was developed. And particularly in the past 20 years, there's been a lot of focus on it among people that are interested in spirituality and consciousness. And the reason is that there is, I think, a feeling that there is some kind of an underlying field to the reality that is provided by quantum theory and that that underlying field is somehow connected to human spirituality and to the divine as such.

I would say the first step to reconnect with either ourselves, or nature, or anyone, is to create a space for it, to create time for it. And that means that even if you have a conversation with someone, don't be somewhere else in your mind, because actually when you are somewhere else when your mind is preoccupied, you are not present. And you actually don't even remember that moment happening, because you wonder, right. So I believe that the first step to well-being in general, to really feeling happier, to really feeling reconnected is to cultivate and to learn to be present. And that's not as easy as it sounds because it requires to still the mind. It requires to sit down, it requires to be patient with ourselves, and it requires to listen and requires to receive and just basically to surrender to the experience.

World Happiness Fest

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 4, 2022 12:54

The first obstacle is waiting for permission to be happy. Many people wait for permission to be happy instead of giving themselves permission. It's easy to do this with all good intentions, you think I can't be happy until everyone else is happy. So you wait until there's some kind of signal that everyone else is happy so now it's allowed.Well, if you do that, you will never be happy because there will always be some unhappy people, following the herd will not lead you to happiness. And in fact, no one in human history would ever have been happy if we had to wait until every single person was happy. So as much as you may feel awkward or selfish about this, you have to blaze your own trail to happiness, which starts with giving yourself permission to do that. And you can actually help others to do that by leading the way and showing them that it's possible. You may think you don't know how to give yourself permission to be happy, but I explain that in detail in my book, The Science of Positivity: Stop Negative Thought Patterns by Changing Your Brain Chemistry. Now, let's think about the second big obstacle to happiness that many people create for themselves, and that is not getting enough sleep. Did you know that the chemicals that make us feel good are actually manufactured while we're sleeping? So if you don't get enough sleep, then when you wake up in the morning, your tank is empty and you literally can't feel happy, even when good things are happening to you. What a waste. So you need to get plenty of sleep in order to manufacture your happy brain chemicals and have a full tank so that you can just easily release them all day. And if you make sleep your top priority, then you will figure out a way to get enough sleep. The last self-created obstacle to happiness is unrealistic expectations. Now, it's very easy to have unrealistic expectations and in fact, hard to have realistic expectations. The first reason for that is that we're always told to dream big. So you probably think that big dreams are the way to be happy, but here's the problem with that. If you imagine yourself at the bottom of a huge mountain and you need to get to the top of the mountain in your opinion, in order to be happy. Well, the fact is that your brain only releases dopamine, that good feeling of joy and excitement when you see yourself approaching a reward. So you have to actually see yourself getting closer in order to feel good. Now, if you are always focusing on a goal, but so far away, and you don't see yourself getting closer, then you're just not going to release the dopamine.

Around 80 years ago, embryologist, Conrad Waddington observed that the genetic code contains items that aren't always expressed. This difference in gene and trait or genotype and phenotype have given rise to what is now one of the fastest-growing areas of science, which has the potential to reshape our understanding of wellbeing. The early stages of the field began with scientific debates about the nature of how organisms develop and how different mechanisms dictate genetic inheritance. Its early definition was a broad explanation for scientific phenomena, which couldn't really be explained by genetics. As the decades went by, scientific and technological developments allowed researchers to understand DNA methylation with the involvement of RNA and create new technologies, which all contributed to the gene expression and its various influences.(...) “The world needs new lenses to understand growth and how humans and societies can thrive.” ~ Luis Gallardo Follow the World Happiness Foundation and the World Happiness Fest here:Website: https://worldhappiness.foundation/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/worldhappinessfoundation/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/worldhappinessfestLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/worldhappiness-foundation/Twitter: https://twitter.com/worldhappinessfYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8CGp4Y7TyGKKrT35fkXg5A

Further, I try to find the righteous path to walk on it and learn every day to live in compassion but thus said, your thoughts and your mind are the temple and compassion is your worship. When I wake up, I first sit leaning on the bedpost with my eyes closed. I try to reflect yesterday and think about how I could better today and design on an incremental practice towards my growth. Thereafter, I put a resolve for the day and begin my meditation of 18 to 36 minutes. I make a multiple of nine. I find nine times is very powerful and a mystical number aligned to existence. After that, I lie back in the bed and stretch myself as much as possible. I then raise my upper back lightly, lift my hands parallel to my legs, and begin my cycle kicks. I do it 108 times. Then I swing over my legs to the ground and thank mother earth for allowing me to walk on her again that day. I thank all elements, people, and things that enable me to be who I am. I cry sometimes for the destitutes and hungry people and send my loving prayers, the least that I can do sitting far away from them. Then my days start with self-affirmation. I keep them around, such as in front of the mirror and in places I spend most of my time. I also have vision and mission statements displayed in strategic locations where I spend my time. What is needed, now more than ever, is a mindset that views reality from the outside in.Brand Activism consists of business efforts to promote, impede, or direct social, political, economic, and/or environmental reform or stasis with the desire to promote or impede improvements in society. This brand activism is a natural evolution beyond the values-driven Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) programs that are, frankly, too slow.Brand activism is driven by a fundamental concern for the biggest and most urgent problems facing society. It gives life to what it means to be a “values-driven” company. You can't be a values-driven company and disregard society – your employees, your customers, the communities you work in, and the world. The proof is in what you do, not what you say.A warning: we should be clear in saying that activism doesn't have to be progressive; it can be regressive as well. The poster-child for regressive activism is Big Tobacco – the tobacco companies that for so many years denied the harm their products did to consumers, even when their own research revealed otherwise. They promoted the “virtues” of smoking in a way that actually hurt consumers. Companies that lobby our politicians for regressive policies are regressive brand activists. On the progressive activism side, we see more and more companies seeking to have an impact on the biggest societal problems. These companies have a larger purpose than simple profit-seeking, and are increasingly seen as leaders in their industries.Brand Activism: From Purpose to Action is about how progressive businesses are taking stands to create a better world.   “The world needs new lenses to understand growth and how humans and societies can thrive.” ~ Luis Gallardo Follow the World Happiness Foundation and the World Happiness Fest here:Website: https://worldhappiness.foundation/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/worldhappinessfoundation/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/worldhappinessfestLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/worldhappiness-foundation/Twitter: https://twitter.com/worldhappinessfYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8CGp4Y7TyGKKrT35fkXg5A

Luis Gallardo tells me how he created the World Happiness Foundation and what's in store for this year's free online festival March 18-23 www.worldhappiness.foundation THE HAPPY BRAIN PODCAST is a frank conversation between Loretta Breuning and a real reader of her book, Habits of a Happy Brain: Retrain your brain to boost your serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin and endorphin levels. Read the book and send your questions to Dr. Breuning on the contact form at the Inner Mammal Institute at: InnerMammalInstitute.org. You may be a guest on the show yourself! The brain chemicals that make us feel good are inherited from earlier mammals. They evolved to do a job, not to make you feel good all the time. When you know the job each chemical does in the state of nature, your ups and downs make sense. More important, you can re-wire yourself to enjoy more of them in sustainable ways. It's not easy, alas. Our brain is designed to release happy chemicals when you take steps that promote survival. But our brain defines survival in a quirky way: it cares about the survival of your genes and it relies on neural pathways built in youth. To make things even harder, our brain habituates to the rewards it has so you always have to do more to get more happy chemicals. We are not born with survival skills like our animal ancestors. Each newborn human wires itself from its own early experience. Happy chemicals are like paving on your neural pathways, wiring you to repeat behaviors that made you feel good before. This is why our urgent motivations don't make sense to our verbal brain. It's not easy being mammal! When you know how your brain works, you can find healthier ways to enjoy happy chemicals and relieve unhappy chemicals. You can build new neural pathways by feeding your brain new experiences. But you have to design the new experiences carefully and repeat them— a lot!The Inner Mammal Institute has free resources to help you make peace with your inner mammal: videos, blogs, infographics, and podcasts. Dr. Breuning's manyt books illuminate the big picture and help you plot your course. You can feel good in new ways, no matter where you are right now.
