Felix a.k.a. Marxist Disco joins the show to discuss the wave of urban redevelopment happening in Japan right now. There are more than 200 buildings planned just in the Tokyo area including Japan's tallest skyscraper on record, despite the chronic recession and stagnant growth rate the country has been experiencing since the 1990s. To make sense of this contradiction, we critically engage with Marxist geographer David Harvey's work, particularly his theory of "spatial fix," and of the urban as the site of social reproduction and revolutionary class struggle. In the first segment of this interview, we discuss the proposed redevelopment of Jingu Gaien as an entry point to the history of capitalist urban development in post-WWII Japan. A seemingly unlikely alliance of environmentalists, conservative politicians, and urban planners has coalesced in opposition to the project. However, the middle class leadership of the opposition movement has focused primarily on the cutting down of ginkgo trees and the aesthetic of urban redevelopment, rather than a systematic critique of capitalist urbanization as a form of class warfare against poor, working class, and unhoused residents of Tokyo such as shown in the removal of a tent city in Miyashita Park in Shibuya. In the second segment of this interview, we zoom in on the question of social reproduction and the class character of urban development in postwar Japan through the history of public housing projects known as Danchi. We discuss the peasant resistance to the construction of danchis in the 50s, their role in the reproduction of the white colour work force and the gendered division of labour during the 60s & 70s, and the mystification of the middle class as an ideal subject of the Japanese nation, as well as how the demographic change in recent decades has made danchis a symbol of social decay and a target of far right attacks. We rely extensively on journalist Yasuda Koichi's book “Danchi to Imin (Danchi and Immigrants)” for this segment, as well as other materials sourced by Felix in his research project. In the third segment, we discuss how the depopulation of the Japanese countryside and the collapse of housing prices there have led to the “I Turn” phenomena of urban-to-rural migration, aided by an idealization of the countryside as the repository of authentic Japaneseness by young middle class Japanese urbanites and Western Japanophiles alike, as well as the effect of imperialism on the changing class composition of the Japanese agriculture. We conclude our discussion by talking about the limits and the possibilities of anti-capitalist struggles and urban-based social movements in Japan and beyond.Read the full episode description here. This is the third part of a three-part sermon series on "turns." We began with U-Turn that churches have to make when they discover they are straying from their purpose in God's mission. Last week we look at the We-turn, what our congregation needs to make in order to spot Satan's lies that would distract us from God's purpose. Today we call this I-Turn. Although we can turn as a congregation to understand and adopt God's mission as our central purpose, there is no WE, if each of us do not turn to revisit our faith, the reason we're here, and the gifts we have been given to bring others to Christ and support the needs in our community. How do you and I turn individually? listen in.

Join us in discussing this sports-n-competition classic! Betsy is drunk off one beer and has a lot to say about "British townhouses and that whole vibe," Jessica loves British culture, and Kelly is just here to say that Kiera Knightley would never be a good soccer player. We all love Coach Joe and his puppy eyes, and we all find beans-on-toast depressing. As usual, we discuss the tragic fashion of the 90s, the club bangers that should never be forgotten ("I Turn to You" by Mel C aka Sporty Spice, we stan), and the confusing relationship between the main characters. It's a good time! Starring: Parminder Nagra, Keira Knightley, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers!
Rev. Celeste hosts Tracy Brown, Diversity and Inclusion trainer, licensed practitioner, leader and author for this powerful episode. Tracy's company, Stained Glass Spirit (https://stglsp.wordpress.com/) is an online space "Where Diversity, Spirituality & Inclusion Intersect!" After more than 20 years of doing diversity and inclusion work, Tracy established Stained Glass Spirit to help create more inclusion in New Thought spiritual communities. She also has a book by the same name with the subtitle "Where Oneness Does Not Require Sameness" (https://www.amazon.com/Stained-Glass-Spirit-Spiritual-Community/dp/1889819506/ref=sr_1_2dchild=1&keywords=Stained+Glass+Spirit&qid=1596227981&sr=8-2.) You can find "Walk Your Stained Glass Spirit Talk" on this site as well.Tracy Brown's site: reclaimjoy.com is filled with ways to find your inner joy and inner peace every day. There are images and videos and other inspirational material (quotes), classes, e-books and talks to assist you in remembering your spiritual center.Tracy also has a book called "I Turn to Prayer" (http://www.iturntoprayer.com/) which is a collection of prayers and prayer poems. Tracy has been working on building a practical strategy for inclusion for most of her life. She did a TedX talk called "What Is Mine to Do". https://video.search.yahoo.com/search/video?fr=mcafee&p=tedx+%2B+Tracy+Brown#id=1&vid=cc00274a0e5b59482146bd0bf1589daf&action=click). The day after the massacre of the Charleston Nine, Tracy reported for jury duty and contemplated whether or not she could be a fair juror if she were on that jury. As she further contemplate other racial makeups with the same set of circumstances, she found herself being comforted by another potential juror who asked if there was anything he could do. She responded yes. "As a White man, you can tell people that you believe the killing of Black people on the basis of the color of their skin must stop." A couple of days later, she created a Facebook group with the same name to stimulate answers to that question. That group now has over 6,000 members and is active daily with solutions.Rev. C shared how nervous she was to be in the pulpit the following Sunday with a predominantly White congregation and how she became keenly aware that Love was the only solution.Tracy has been on the Leadership Council of the Centers for Spiritual Living (csl.org) for several years where she was also the Chairperson for three years. Stepping into leadership was natural for her. Being on this governing body for CSL caused her to be even more spiritually grounded because being a leader in a spiritual organization was challenging. She feels blessed to be in leadership when the organization was just becoming (a merger between two Religious Science organizations). The question: "Do I believe this teaching or not?" came up frequently during this faith walk.Tracy is human and her commitment to "Go high" and live a spiritually grounded life keeps her above the fray. Rev. Celeste mentioned a lesson from A Course in Miracles (acim.org): God is in everything I see as she shared that there's more to people than what we see when they are in their pain and fear.Tracy's Facebook groups Stained Glass Spirit, "Reclaim Joy" and "What Is Mine to Do" are good places to find her events. Tracy reviews 12-step programs and their focus on changing behavior to create new thoughts, feelings and beliefs. Discussion includes building a framework for creativity while learning to listen for inspired guidance in the process. Tracy Brown is the author of “Stained Glass Spirit: Becoming a Spiritual Community Where Oneness Does Not Require Sameness” and, “I Turn to Prayer” a collection of prayers written in a variety of formats. Today is a big day. Because today, I TURN 30! And I know that our culture has a lot of opinions about turning 30 and all sorts of other birthday milestones. If I listened to everyone around me, this would've been one of the most depressing birthdays of my life. I would have found all the new ways that my body was hurting, I would look at my life and all the things that I didn't have that I thought I would...it would've been AWFUL! But I don't see 30 that way. I never have. Maybe because I felt so lost in my 20s. But, seemingly no matter who I talked to, my excitement for my 30s was not something that many people shared. By a lot of perspectives, I wasn't on track. I was failing at achieving the timeline of what I "should" have by my 30th birthday. But whose timeline is that? Who is telling me that's what I SHOULD want?! In today's episode, I'm going to dig into that. I'm going to question those timelines, question the cultural perspective on turning 30 and I'm going to share something that maybe a lot of people won't agree with...that my BEST YEARS are STILL AHEAD of me. And that having that perspective is a CHOICE! You can CHOOSE to come from that perspective. So, if you're staring down a milestone birthday and dreading it, if you're feeling like you're not where you "should" be in your life according to the timelines, if you're feeling like you "should" have kids, buy a house, get married or any other timeline markers, this is the episode for you! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tbydl-podcast/message

Our music for today’s show sets the scope of our tribute show on the poetry of mothers, about mothers, for mothers, to mothers: you’ll hear “I Turn to You,” the theme song from Harold and Maude (Maude’s maternal advice to be … Continue reading → The post A HOPE OF MOTHERS, A WORRY OF MOTHERS: MOTHERS IN POETRY, ON POETRY, AS POETS first appeared on Dr. Barbara Mossberg » Poetry Slowdown.
Epic, momentous, ostentatious are just some of the words used to best describe a majority of the productions coming out in 2000. And why not? After all, it was the new millennium, the beginning of another 100 years. With all the predictions that it was going to be the end of days and that January 1st would be the day that time stood still, what better reason could you have for making it the grandest party of all time? As DJs began to really make a name for themselves, each one tried to topple the other with the biggest, fattest and longest mix as possible. After his "momentous" remix of Jennifer Lopez's "Waiting For Tonight" the year before, Hex Hector was leading the charge with Thunderpuss 2000 not far behind. That's not to say there weren't any other massive tunes of the year, because there were. DJ Tiesto quite possibly churned out a career-defining remix for Delerium's "Silence" featuring Sarah McLachlan; that is until a few years later when he posted another massive tune on his mantle by The Roc Project's "Never (Past Tense)" featuring Tina Arena, but that's for another post. Even Victor Calderone turned Sting into a dancefloor sensation with his unlikely rework of "Desert Rose" featuring Cheb Mami. Nevertheless, it was all about Hex Hector! From 1999 forward, you could pretty much count on Hex to whip up the seasonal classic that would have everybody shaking their ass and pestering the DJ to play that song, over and over. This year's winner was from the former Spice Girl, Melanie C. whose "I Turn To You" was an instant classic. Hypnotic, catchy as friggin' hell with a deep trance-like thumping beat you just couldn't escape from. No doubt, the guy was at the top of his game. You couldn't even walk into a club without hearing one of his big productions blasting from the speakers. Whoever said everything should be in moderation was dead wrong! In this case, EXCESS is definitely BEST! Enjoy! Album : Year-End Edition 2000 | volume 3 Genre : Circuit, Mainstream, House, Classics Year : 2008 Total Time : 1:38:41:00 1.
